Kol HaRav: Voice of the Rabbimy K’fitzat Ha-derekh experienceHaverim, shalom.

You are now probably scratching your head, wondering what the strange words in the title of this article mean. Kfitzat ha-derekh is a Talmudic term that literally means “a vaulting over the road” and is most often associated with a miraculous shortening of what otherwise would have been a long and arduous journey. A person feels that instead of traveling along the road, he or she has instan-taneously jumped over its full length and has immediately arrived at the destination. In my case, I not only had that feeling, but I also felt as if upon my arrival at my destination I actually re-entered the experience that I left behind. I will explain.

Last month Fredi and I traveled to Israel. The trip served a variety of purposes. We spent real quality time with our children, Avi and Sharon, and grandchildren, Itai, Dani and Ella, in Ra’anana, and we visited other family members and friends. We joined Marilyn Ziering and her family for the ribbon cutting ceremony at the new Sigi and Marilyn Ziering National Center for Newborn Screening that will test every baby born in Israel for 30 treatable genetic diseases. And, we participated with the Pressman Academy children, parents and teachers who were visiting our partner school in Tel Aviv, the Magen School, in Magen’s Yom Ha-zikaron (Memorial Day) ceremony for Israel’s fallen soldiers. Representatives of the Pressman contingent placed a wreath on the school’s memorial for its alumni who died in Israel’s wars, and I was honored with reciting the El Maleh Rahamim prayer. Then, as Memorial Day ended and Israel ushered in Yom Ha-atzma’ut (Independence Day), our family went to the big park in Ra’anana for an evening of song, dance, music, food and fireworks in honor of Israel’s 60th birthday. It kicked off 24 hours of celebration that stood in marked contrast to the sadness of Yom Ha-zikaron. Fredi was able to stay and participate in the next day’s festivities, but I had to return to L.A. In fact, I had to cut short my time at the evening festival since my flight left at 12:40 a.m. But that is when my kfitzat ha-derekh experience actually began.

Fifteen hours after we took off from Ben Gurion airport, El Al flight 006 landed at LAX. On that flight you fly non-stop in total darkness and land at daybreak, so you have no visual sense of the passage of time. The plane is dark for most of the flight, so sleeping is easier (especially if you take the proper doctor-prescribed medication). If you plan your time carefully – allowing time for working, eating, reading, sleeping, and watching a movie – before you know it you are in L.A.

Our plane landed at 5:55 a.m., and by 7:00 I was on my way home. I unpacked, got cleaned up, looked at the mail and was in my office at shul by 10:45, feeling quite awake and energized. At noon I joined the Pressman Academy Day School kids for a Yom Ha-atzma’ut falafel lunch, and then, at 1:00 p.m., we gathered for the Yom Ha-atzma’ut program, at which I was honored by leading the school in the Prayer for Israel.

With a few exceptions, the program was conducted in Hebrew, the songs and music were Israeli and Israel flags were present in great abundance. In short, I was thrust back into the experience I was hav-ing when I left Israel the prior evening; and given that my flight was on an Israeli airline, it was as if I never left Israel. Being with our students, I felt as if I were back in Israel with the Pressman kids who were there, simply continuing the celebration that had begun the night before.

I felt as if I had, indeed, instantaneously vaulted over the 7800 miles between Israel and L.A. and ended up in the same place where my journey began. It was a kfitzat ha-derekh.

As I thought about what I was feeling, I real-ized that what I really was experiencing was the similarity between the culture we have created at Beth Am and at the Pressman Academy and that of the places in Israel that I visited, where a love of Israel and of Judaism is at the center of people’s lives. I felt equally at home in both situations because there is a real convergence of the values that operate in both and a sense of connectedness between the communities that fosters a shared feeling of family and peoplehood that is very meaningful and powerful.

Over the past few decades there has been substantial progress in changing the nature of Israel – Diaspora relations. The “us and them” attitude – on the one side, the heroic Israeli, living in Spar-tan conditions on the “front line,” and on the other the “wealthy” Western Jewish supporter of Israel, living in comfort thousands of miles away and sending money whenever it is needed – that informed the relationship between the two centers of the Jew-ish people during the first decades of Israel’s existence has been changed by a wide range of ideological, political, social, economic and demographic factors. And, serious efforts on the part of Jews in Israel and the Diaspora to redefine the relationship as a partner-ship of equals, in which each contributes in unique ways, to the benefit of both communities, has also born considerable fruit. Our L.A. – Tel Aviv partnership is one example of such an effort, as are the sister synagogue bonds that exist between Masorti/Conserva-tive congregations in America and in Israel. Because of we at Beth Am have participated in these and other similar programs, the younger cohorts of our synagogue, as well as our older members, feel a very strong connection with Israel, as indicated by our latest Strategic Planning survey.

Ironically, this bonding, with all of its positive results and im-plications for the future of the Jewish People, has taken place even as significant numbers of American and Israeli young people have drifted even further apart. But, thankfully, we know how to deal with the problem: Intensify the educational and partnering work that has succeeded in creating the ties that bind us as one people. It can be done, and Temple Beth Am is proof of this assertion. 80% of our congregants have told us that the State of Israel is a very important component of their Jewish identity. And, over 75% of our Day School children have told us that they have already been to Israel. We must be doing something right!

I realize that every time we travel back and forth to Israel we will not have a kfitzat ha-derekh experience. But we have relationships with people and communities in Israel with whom we share a great deal. May we come to appreciate, even more, how precious these relationships are, and may we commit ourselves to working to ensure that others have the opportunity to build similar bonds that enrich their lives as Jews and the lives of our sisters and brothers in Israel. Then we will all come to the realization that these bonds constitute the real miracle that makes the kfitzat ha-derekh experience possible.

B’shalom,Rabbi Joel Rembaum

It is hard to believe that I am writing my last Kol Ha’am column as TBA President. What a ride it has been! We are entering a time of great change and opportunity for our congregation. It is also a time of heartfelt goodbyes and good wishes for Rabbi Netter and Hazzan Lipton, both of whom have served our community with great dedication and love.

I have often commented on what a wonderful, learned and dedicated community we are privileged to be a part of, and I continue to be inspired by our members and our clergy. We are a shining example of living Conservative Judaism: we are proudly egalitarian, we show up in significant numbers on Shabbat, we love Israel, we care deeply about our communal congregation, Klal Yisrael and our broader communities. Nothing makes Rabbi Rembaum happier than to see our shul buzzing with activity – and that we do – on a regular basis. Rabbi Leider has eased into her role as key member of our clergy, and she has nurtured new rela-tionships with many of our younger members and their families. I venture to say that we have more rabbis and Jewish communal leaders, professors and teachers as members than any other congregation in the United States. We are smart, opinionated, and passionate about our Judaism and our community. We have much to be proud of and so much to look forward to . . .

We have wonderful schools led with clear and steady vision by our Head of School, Rabbi Mitchel Malkus, and his talented staff and teachers. Sheryl Goldman, our Executive Director, demonstrates her skills, as well as her love and dedication to our community, with each new program and event that she nurtures and oversees–not to mention supporting the ambitious initiatives of each new President (Strategic Planning and Bylaws ring a bell?). We have amazingly dedicated lay leaders who spend countless hours making sure that we can run the programs and services that we all have come to rely upon, and selfless volunteers who show up time and time again to support our shul in countless ways. With our new strategic plan, we will have an important

FRom ouR PReSIDeNTblueprint for our future. While all such plans need flexibility to account for change, we have a solid base, thanks to all of your input, for setting priorities and making decisions for our congregation.

I have had the privilege of serving with a talented Board that demonstrates consistent commitment to leadership and our shul community. In addition to Rabbi Rembaum’s wonderful optimism and counsel, I have greatly benefited from the support and good counsel of our past Presidents, with a special thank you to Mark Wolf who has been a friend and reliable ear on so many occasions. He will, I am sure, continue to demonstrate great devotion to our community as chair of Senior Rabbi Search Committee. I leave this position in the able hands of your newly elected President, Diane Shapiro. Diane has been a steady and wise partner as Executive Vice Presi-dent and as a friend these past two years. I know that she will be a strong leader as we enter a new and important phase for our community. Through her varied leadership positions at our shul, Diane has a deep and long history here, which she couples with her innate good judgment and excitement for the opportunities ahead. We are fortunate to have her at the helm.

Finally, a special thank you to my family, without them, I simply could not have undertaken this rewarding, yet challeng-ing, position. Ron, you are and have always been my rock, and I am eternally grateful that we get to share our lives and our many blessings together. Talia and Ariela, you are the lights of our lives and your support and good humor these past few years have made the long hours and constant meetings easier to handle. I am the luckiest woman in the world to have you all by my side.

Temple Beth Am has a wonderful future ahead. I look forward to sharing it with all of you. All the best, Vivian

B’Kol RAm: A RAISeD VoICe The second century sage, Shimon ben Azzai, taught that one

is required to recite two blessings upon entering a city and two blessings upon leaving the city. The first two blessings entreat God to assure that the traveler arrives and enters the city in peace.

Looking back on the last sixteen years I am grateful for the many blessings of peace with which God has blessed me and my family.

I have deep attachments to this community. I raised and educated my children at Beth Am and there are many people whom I love in this community. We have shared so much of life together over the past sixteen years.

It is with a great deal of excitement that I can now announce my appointment, effective August 1, 2008, as Vice President of Communications for Principal Capital Group, Inc. (“PCPG”), a holding company headquartered here in Los Angeles. PCPG already is making a significant impact in the development of eco-friendly technologies, health care advances and construction.

Joining PCPG in a senior executive position affords me the opportunity to actualize many of my core values. The vision and strategy of the company is to support the development and production of products and services that will greatly enhance quality of life coupled with a commitment to environmental responsibility.

PCPG is restructuring the capitalization of and investing in an electric car company, which I believe is the future of trans-portation. Recognizing that the hybrid engine is a transitional technology, and that electric and hydrogen powered engines will most likely be operating our vehicles within the next decade or two, I believe that developing the electric car is no less than an ethical imperative. We will accomplish many important ecological, economic and political goals with the electric car: dramatically reducing greenhouse gases, and, equally important,

reducing our dependence on Middle East oil. I know I need not tell you how good that will be for the Jews, for Israel and for our children and grandchildren.

PCPG is also planning to expand the business of a LEEDS certified, eco-friendly cinder block product that reduces energy costs by 70%, is wa-terproof, rodent proof, bullet proof and nearly sound proof. It is an ideal building material, especially for developing countries. The company’s plans for expansion of its production facilities include Israel, which could become the center of production for the entire Middle East and Europe. This would be marvelous for Israel’s economy.

PCPG is heavily involved in the senior living industry (nursing homes, retirement centers and assisted living facilities) that will bring comfort, care and dignity to an aging population. One of the central teachings of the Torah is that a civilization is judged by how we take care of the elderly. PCPG is a company that ac-cepts the challenges of this mitzvah.

I could go on, but I won’t. I am grateful to my friend, Harold Gregg, for giving me this opportunity. Many of you know Harold from his regular attendance in Bait Tefillah and Lehrhaus classes. I pray that I will be worthy of Harold’s trust and confidence and that I can somehow make a contribution to the growth and suc-cess of the company.

Ben Azzai’s blessings upon leaving a city include a prayer of thanksgiving to God for having concluded the journey in peace. As I leave, I thank God for all I have experienced, all I have learned, all we have shared together. I will cherish count-less memories and am deeply grateful for the opportunity I have been given to have served as your rabbi. May God bless.

With love, Rabbi Perry Netter

Temple Beth Am welcomes our new Rabbinic Interns

elana ZelonyTemple Beth Am is pleased to wel-

come Elana Zelony to the Temple Beth Am staff. A fifth-year rabbinical stu-dent at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, Elana is no stranger to Temple Beth Am. She served as Assistant Direc-tor of Camp Keshet several years ago

and now will be a wonderful asset to our rabbinic staff. Elana grew up in the Bay Area, and is married to Adiv. They

welcomed an exciting new addition this year – their daughter Nesya. Influenced by her experience studying at the Pardes Institute in Jerusalem, Elana was attracted to the rabbinate. She served as a Kol Bo for the High Holidays at Congregation Beth Shalom in Modesto, and interned with Congregation Beth Shalom in Seattle, WA. She also has two years chaplaincy experience, and has served on the faculty of Kehilat Ma’arav in Santa Monica and Los Angeles Hebrew High School. She holds a Masters in Jewish Education from the Fingerhut School at the American Jewish University.

Elana will be partnering with Rabbi Daniel Greyber in leading Neshama Minyan on Friday nights. She will also coor-dinate Ruth’s Circle and work directly with Rabbi Weinberg in the Judaism-By-Choice Dinners and Services here at Temple Beth Am. For High Holidays, Elana will lead a wonderful new teen service and will work closely with Francine Farkas on a Second Day Rosh Hashanah afternoon family service. She will also have a presence in daily minyan and will join Rabbis Rembaum and Leider in teaching from the Shulchan Aruch during evening minyan. Elana, welcome to Temple Beth Am. We are so glad you are here!

Rachel KobrinYou may have seen Rachel at Temple

Beth Am before as her 4 year old daugh-ter Noa Kobrin-Brody is in Morah Sari’s class in the ECC. Rachel and her husband Rabbi Rick Brody are expecting a second child soon!

Temple Beth Am is fortunate that Ra-chel will intern here in the 2008-2009 year. Rachel will oversee the monthly Learner’s Minyan, lead the weekly Mincha, Se’udah Shlisheet and Ma’riv services on Shabbat afternoon and will participate in a variety of other rabbinic activities during the course of the year. She will also have a presence in daily minyan and will join Rabbis Rembaum and Leider in teaching from the Shulchan Aruch during evening minyan.

Prior to her studies at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, Rachel worked at Hillel in Los Angeles and Philadelphia. She also lived for two years in Israel, studying at the Pardes Insti-tute and working for various non-profit organizations there. She implemented a new religious school at Temple Shalom of the South Bay, reaching over 100 students in its inaugural year. She has led family services for high holidays for the past two years at Temple Ami Shalom in West Covina, where her husband is a rabbi. She is currently teaching Torah at Beth Chayim Chadashim and serves as mashgichah at the American Jewish University. She recently had four essays published in the book, God: Jewish Choices for Struggling with the Ultimate. Welcome to Temple Beth Am!

Rosh Hodesh Ahotai (“Our Sisters’ Rosh Hodesh) celebrated Iyar with a “Moving Torah” workshop with teacher Andrea Hodos. Using text study, words, and movement, we defined and articulated our own experiences with B’nai Yisrael as we waited to receive the Torah.

Here are the thoughts and feelings that went through the minds and bodies of some the women who were at Mt. Sinai to receive the Torah:

1. I feel quiet. I feel peace. My heart is trembling, warm, open, waiting. I feel heavy and light. I feel big and small. I feel the whole mountain, the air, the wind, the noise, the excitement, the fear, the anxiety, waiting and thrilled.

2. Humility. Shouldering a burden. Exulting in freedom. Re-ceiving a gift.

3. I¹m in awe and conflicted. Physically drained, uncomfort-able due to being dirty and tired and crowded. Surrounded by people with confused looks on their faces. Feeling like there is nowhere to go. Who is leading? I¹m following Moses and my people, my family‹but why? I¹ve left suffering, but a suffering I know, to go where, do what? Is this best for my children? Are they going to have a future? I feel surrounded by dust clouds, I don¹t really see faces clearly. I turn and turn and look for G-d I don¹t see him.

4. I came prepared, clean and pure to face the mountain and wondered what would be ahead. I dressed in white as a symbol of an open slate, ready to imprint any knowledge

that my happen. There is a air of mystery, unknown, and wonderment that also brings conflicted feelings. What was I to face?

There was both excitement and fear. 5. Intense, blinding light. Warmth yet a certain chill. Buzzing

of people nervous with uncertainty.6. When I took my place at the foot of the mountain I was ter-

rified. Everything so violent. Even though I was with other people, I felt alone.

7. The thick, smoke-filled air burned my eyes and nostrils. There was no sense of what was behind the wide tower of darkness and the noise was deafening. I could feel the heat of the fire in my chest. The sweat dripped down my back and my clothes stuck to my skin. I felt dirty, yet I had been purified. There were shouts of fear and shouts of excitement. The children were in awe.

8. God saved us. Now it is time to fulfill our share of the obliga-tion. We have received freedom. Now we must reciprocate by assuming our duties -- to be worthy of freedom, we must be upright, responsible to our holy self and respectful of the holiness of others.

9. Fear. Loud noises from the mountain. Animals and children standing in awe. What is happening? God came through for us in Egypt, but I¹m still afraid of what¹s next. Where is my father and my family? Why can’t I move? My eyes burn from the heat and the smoke. Everyone is quietly waiting, trusting. Who am I to be standing here? Why me?

It is hard to believe that the last 4 years are coming to an end and with that, so is my time as the Temple Beth Am and Pressman Academy Youth Director. It is true what they say, time flies by when you’re having fun! It seems like just yester-day that I stepped through the doors of Temple Beth Am full of nervous excitement for what was to lie ahead. Lucky for me, I was welcomed into the Beth Am Mishpacha with open arms. I have learned so much and grown tremendously over the last 4 years. I have been blessed to have been given the opportunity to work in such a warm and inviting community. The children, teens, and adults that I have come in contact with have left a tremendous impression on me. I know that I am a better person, a stronger Jew, and a more well-rounded human be-ing from my time at TBA. The memories that I have made will last a lifetime and I know that I will always hold a very special place in my heart for the Temple Beth Am community. I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for having made the last 4 years such a rewarding and memorable experience for me. I will truly miss being your Youth Director.

The last USY event of the year, and my last program as Youth Director, is our final USY Banquet on Tuesday, June 8th from 6:15-8:45pm. At this banquet, we discharge the 2007-2008 USY Chapter Board and install the new 2008-2009 chapter board. We say good-bye to all of the USY graduating 12th graders and recognize a member of our USY chapter as “USYer of the Year.” It will also be at banquet that I have the chance to say my final

YouTH DePARTmeNT NeWSgood-bye and to welcome the new Youth Director, Alana Levitt, to Temple Beth Am. If you are interested in attending, please contact the youth department to purchase your ticket. Tickets are $18 each.

The month of May consisted of a number of exciting Kadima and USY events. Kadima wrapped up the year with a mock drive in movie and a mystery night. Both were a lot of fun! USY events included a Shmooze with special guest Scott Shafrin, a Shabbat Dinner with Neshama minyan, a SATO movie night, Regional Con-vention in Irvine, and elections for the upcoming USY board.

Perhaps the most exciting event in May was the Shul wide Talent Show. This year’s talent show was the best yet! Par-ticipants consisted of children, teens, and adults. There were musical numbers, dance routines, comedy acts, and more! Ev-eryone that attended enjoyed the show. All of the proceeds that were raised are being donated to Tikkun Olam, the fundraising branch of USY. Thank you to everyone that helped made this possible! A special thanks to everyone that participated in the show and displayed their talent for everyone to enjoy.

Once again, thank you for the amazing experience I’ve had at TBA over the last 4 years!

MAKING IT EASIER FOR YOU TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

As we head into those lazy and far too hazy LA summer days, this installment of Guarding the Garden brings you some excit-ing Green Team activity updates and a terrific resource for gardening that is truly green.

E-Waste RecyclingYasher koach to Jonathan and Sharon Swerdlow for donating

our first “Technotrash” recycling box from Green Disc. Now you can bring all your outdated e-waste, from PC’s to CD’s, from cell phones to rechargeable batteries, to TBA for safe and secure recycling and disposal. Additional details online at www.tbala.org/greenteam. Thank you, Stuart Weiss, for volunteering to purchase our next box!

And don’t forget to drop off your used inkjet and toner cartridges as well. Beth Am and Pressman exchange them for cash in our part-nership with RECYCLE4KIDS.ORG.

Pressman Academy Aims for Waste-Free LunchComing this fall—Pressman families will be encouraged to pack

lunches that generate zero trash. Imagine the hundreds, perhaps thousands of pounds of resources that we’ll conserve in just one year. Countless schools across the country do it, and so can we! Additional details are coming in our August column, as well as in Pressman Acad-emy materials. Yasher koach to Nina Reinis, Sharon Brooks, and Rabbi Chaim Tureff for creating this program!

Green Shabbat Coming In SeptemberAs part of TBA’s efforts to help its members “discover the power

of t’shuvah and change the world” during the High Holy Days, we will celebrate a shul-wide Green Shabbat on September 20th. A major speaker will address all three minyanim to help us understand that we must not only do t’shuvah to restore ourselves—but to restore our planet as well. Watch for additional details.

TBA SoCIAl ACTIoN CommITTee

Kudos to all the Temple Beth Am members who participated in Big Sunday. TBA members beautified a local elementary school (Carthay), handed out clothes at NCJW, took troubled teens, runaways & survivors of domestic violence on a bus tour of Los Angeles, and prepared and served dinner for the home-less at a Santa Monica shelter. The dinner was sponsored by Temple Beth Am.

Starting in June, Beth Am members will be preparing and serving dinner to the homeless once a month at a PATH home-less shelter. This is a family-friendly volunteer opportunity that you can do once ever or once every month. My family participated in the Big Sunday dinner for the homeless and we had a great time – my 4-year-old really enjoyed talking to the

residents and serving them mustard and bottles of water and they really enjoyed talking to her.

In June we’re serving dinner at the Westside shelter (near Pico and Sepulveda) and in July we’re serving dinner at the Hol-lywood shelter (near Beverly and Vermont), which also serves families with children. We plan to switch off every month.

If you are interested in participating in this or other vol-unteer opportunities, please email the TBA Social Action Committee, a group of members committed to the practice of Tikkun Olam (the repair of the world). If you are interested in serving on the committee, please email Tyson at [email protected].

“Do not be daunted by the enormity of the world’s grief. Do justly, now. Love mercy, now. Walk humbly, now. You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.”

“Deeds of loving-kindness are superior to charity ... Charity can be accomplished only with money; deeds of loving-kindness can be accomplished through per-sonal involvement as well as with money.”

KoleinuThe Book of Psalms tells us, “Ivdu et HaShem b’Simcha” —

“Serve God with joy.” Among Temple Beth Am’s many Shabbat morning services, one boasts an abundance of joyful worship: Koleinu, the service for children with special needs. Meeting twice a month in a classroom of the Rena E. Ganzberg Educa-tion Center, Koleinu (Hebrew for “our voices”) serves a diverse group of children – with autism, cerebral palsy, and other devel-opmental challenges . The children are often joined by parents, siblings, relatives and friends who have come to love this warm and spirited service.

Koleinu’s participants have varying abilities: Some are more verbal than others; some have sensory challenges that make it difficult to be in noisy places; some need a bit of help to move about the room, while others literally can’t sit still. What they all share is an enthusiasm for the service and a love of Juda-ism — and life.

Using a siddur inspired by Camp Ramah in California’s Tikva program — which serves special-needs children — the service makes davening accessible and fun. It includes familiar ele-ments of the Shacharit service, as well as unique elements that inspire creativity and ruach. One highlight: “Thank You, God” song, in which each child lists something for which he or she feels grateful that week. (Some favorites: family pets, upcoming animated movies, and Shabbat itself!) Each participant also has the opportunity for an aliyah to the Torah. Some do this on their own, some get help from a talking machine or by repeating after an adult helper. Over time, the children become more comfort-able with aliyot and with all of the aspects of the service. They also take turns leading various prayers.

Koleinu fills an important void in our community and rec-ognizes that every person is created b’tselem elohim -- in God’s image. We are all the stronger for having such an inspirational and special service at the synagogue.

This year, Koleinu has been under the leadership of Ziegler rabbinical students Elan Babchuck and Avi Taff, each of whom has brought energy, creativity, and a big smile. New participants are always welcome, ages 9 and up, and at any level of ability. Come have an experience of truly serving God with joy!

Koleinu will be run through the summer. Please check the Shabbat bulletin or the Temple website for exact dates or contact Mia Pardo at [email protected] or (310) 652-7353, ext. 390.

shalom,

we want You!

Membership DriveWe are looking to our Temple members to come and see

what a great program we have for you. Every month new members from the community, who have heard about our fantastic program, are joining the group. We welcome couples and singles to the group.

Our program consists of a wonderful speaker mainly from Cedars Sinai Medical Center with topics that are relevant to our age group. We serve a delicious Kosher lunch, followed by an entertainer who will give a performance for 45 minutes. A few times a year the children from The Rabbi Jacob Pressman Academy come over from the school with special programs or to entertain us with their wonderful singing. Some of you may have grandchildren or great-grandchildren in the Academy and even if you don’t, you should see them and shep nachas as we do.

Our very special luncheon celebrating Mothers Day/Fathers Day was a huge success.

The next luncheon will be held on June 12, the topic will be Cardiovascular Education and screening conducted by Cedars Sinai Medical Center.

Our entertainer is Joey Aaron, who has entertained for us before and is always an enjoyment.

Our luncheons are usually on the second Thursday of month and include a speaker, lunch and entertainment, $10 for members $12.50 for non-members, if you join at the lunch it is only $10. You don’t have to be a member of the Happy Seniors to attend our lunches, but we do invite your membership at $15 ($25 per couple) for one year.

For further information on our group, please leave a voice-mail message for Miriam at 310-652-7354 x 521.

Thank you for your continued support of our group.Miriam Kavis, Coordinator

FAReWell To RABBI RuTTeNBeRGThank you to our outgoing rabbinic intern, Danya Ruttenberg, who was so much a part

of the TBA family this year. Danya was ordained on May 19 and will soon be relocating to Boston with her husband Nir. Rabbi Ruttenberg, a published author, has a book coming out in August and will return to Temple Beth Am in September for a book signing prior to the High Holidays. She will also teach at the Tikkun Leil Shavuot here at TBA on June 8.

We wish Danya and Nir all the best on their new adventure. Thank you for all you have done and do for our TBA community!
