Introduction to the highlights of Kokubunji and Fuchu

Otaka-no-michi Path/ Masugata-no-ike Pond Natural Springs

The "Otaka-no-michi Path" Walking Trail derives its name from the fact the area was designated as a hawk sanctuary for the Owari-Tokugawa family during the Edo period. Meanwhile, the name "Masugata-no-ike" Pond comes from the tale of a beautiful young lady named Tamatsukuri Komachi. She became very sick, but legend has it that upon cleansing her body in the natural springs, she was able to restore her former beauty.

Kokubunji Romon (Two-storied gate)In the grounds of Kokubunji Temple, you can see the Beishinji temple two-storied gate, which was moved from Maesawa-mura (present-day Higashi Kurume) to its present location in 1895. This is a structure of real presence whose sheet metal roofing strongly reminds us of Edo-style architecture. The two-storied gate stands three bays wide with the middle bay serving as an entrance. The second story plays host to the Statues of the 16 Arhats (of which 13 currently remain).

Station of Historic Site OTA CAFEWelcome to the Otaka-no-michi Free Recreational Space and Information Center. Here's where you can enjoy a meal made by local Kokubunji fruits and vegetables, as well as buy renowned Kokubunji products and tickets for the natural spring park.

Tonogayato Metropolitan GardensThis park has been skillfully woven in to the Musashino natural landscape and vegetation. You can also enjoy the slope known as "Kokubunji Plateau," which makes ingenious use of dierences in elevation. As we reach the heart of autumn in late-November and early-December, the park is turned bright red by the Acer palmatum leaves within. These make for fantastic viewing from the Koyo-tei (red autumn leaf) teahouse.

Okunitama-Jinja ShrineThe shrine's history is said to date back around 1900 years, when the old Musashi Province's guardian deity was enshrined there. The shrine becomes particularly lively each May when the "Kurayami" Festival in the dark is held.

Okunitama-Jinja Shrine Repository

During the regular festival of May 5th, objects on display will include a portable shrine, a large taiko drum and other sacred treasures. Open: Sat, Sun, Public holidays, Shrine festival days, 10:00-16:00 Entry fee: Adults 200 yen, Students 100 yen

Fuchu City Kyodo-no-mori Museum

This museum is full of exciting things to see, including the main building exhibition room, the "Water Enjoyment Pond" and restored old buildings. Enjoy learning about Fuchu's natural beauty and history here.

Plum FestivalFuchu City Kyodo-no-mori Museum plays host to a total of 1100 plum trees, encompassing 60 species and ranging from early to late-bloomers. A Plum Festival is held every February and March.

TAKASE DOJOExperience sword-fighting at Takase Dojo, a place responsible for overseeing many a movie action scene! While learning about traditional Japanese culture, you can challenge a professional actor to a swordfight! You can even use a bamboo sword seen in the movies! The experience is open to both men and women, with all-women classes taught by a female instructor proving especially popular.

FUCHU Historical heritage hall and Archives

This museum stands upon land which once belonged to the old Musashi Province, and is now a National Historic Site. It displays excavated relics and introduces visitors to the history and culture of ancient Fuchu. People of all ages can enjoy the cultural assets and historical remains while learning at the same time.
