As much as we love having them here, we are also looking forward to a break, particularly as more and more of the team have been getting sick lately. I think the school and our offices need a good chance to clean out the germs! Well what a Term it has been. I would like to thank the Kojonup Shire Council for their financial support of the visiting play, Kookoo Kookaburra which was presented here for all students in town from age 5 to 10. This small play carried a very positive and engaging message around the need to make and maintain friends and would have been too expensive for us to have without the Shires significant support. We have had three sporting events that have taxed, but certainly not defeated, Ms Johnston and this is in good part due to the support she has received from parents. Thank you to everyone who has assisted with either of the Cross Country events or the Winter Carnival in Katanning. Our regionally famous Kojonup Speech and Drama Festival was another resounding success although the medallions certainly seemed to be well shared amongst the visiting teams! Mrs Howe, along with an army of adjudicators and student assistants did a spectacular job and I was proud to be able to open each of the two days of this competition. Another significant change has come to us through the assistance and commitment of the Rotary Club of Kojonup as thier members have taken on the Second Breakfast Club on Wednesday mornings, thereby giving our students a catch-up breakfast on three mornings each week with the other two days still run by Simon House and his team of stalwart volunteers. Making this up to four days is our Chaplain, Mrs Vicky Webb who provides a bowl of hot porridge on Tuesdays! A few weeks ago I wrote to all parents of secondary students outlining the problems we have experienced with staffing in high school and the responses we have implemented to deal with it. When those secondary students bring their reports home on Friday there will be a much shorter but more precise letter from me in the folder. This is the letter that has been developed in partnership with the Schools Curriculum and Standards Authority and is something you may wish to keep with this Semester One Report. I am pleased to be able to report that Mr Gill will be remaining with us next Semester and although I have reported this elsewhere, I can confirm that Ms Megan Baker will be here to teach Secondary English, HASS and a little H/Ed. Finally, and most importantly, please note that there has been a change to our Term 3 Planner. The Professional Development Day currently listed as August 18 has changed, it is now the FIRST day of Term 3, Monday 17 th July, students to return to school Tuesday 18 th July 2017. Enjoy the time with your children; we look forward to seeing them come back healthy and rested, ready for the second half of the year. FROM THE PRIMARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Dean Gill With the end of term looming, looking back to say it has been a busy term is somewhat of an understatement. Alongside assessing and writing reports we’ve had numerous community events such as the Speech and Drama Festival, Inter- House Cross Country, Inter-School Cross Country and Winter Carnival. We’ve had incursions such as Kookoo Kookaburra and Food Sensations and also assemblies throughout the Primary and High School areas of the school. Running these events is no easy feat and there are a number of people to thank because without them the events wouldn’t have been possible. Firstly with respect to Speech and Drama, Marcelle Howe has been an amazing organiser and a large amount of credit goes to her for the event. With respect to everything sport related, Maddelin Johnston and Deb Elliot have co- ordinated these events extremely well which is a true credit to these amazing ladies. Thank you to all the amazing volunteers: students, community and staff that helped out. As you know they are not small endeavours and they cannot happen without a joint effort. Throughout the last few weeks we’ve had a number of sicknesses run through the school so this is a timely reminder to monitor the health and wellbeing of your kids. If your child is ill and you aren’t sure whether they are well enough to be at school, please by all means ring the school and we can ascertain the suitability of their attendance. This time of the year is also fairly disruptive as a number of staff can often fall sick which means they are replaced with relief, often at short notice. I’ve had to have a number of absences of late due to health and work related reasons so I’m very aware when administration personnel are away, the impact it has if you are attempting to communicate with us. I apologise for any disruption caused during my absences and particularly if you’ve been making the effort to contact me where there has been a delay in the response. If you do need to contact the school please remember that emails are always a good alternative option to a phone call. I hope you all have a great holiday and enjoy the two weeks off. With so much that has happened this semester we are all looking forward to starting next semester on a better foot and spending a lot of time to improve the everyday schooling experience for our students.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL – Peter Callaghan Dear Parents and Carers,

With the Week 10 Newsletter coming out we know we are just about due to send your children home for a break from classes. As much as we love having them here, we are also looking forward to a break, particularly as more and more of the team have been getting sick lately. I think the school and our offices need a good chance to clean out the germs!

FROM THE SECONDARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – Bob Trouchet I hope that stability will return to the secondary staff after the holidays. Megan Baker will be joining us to teach English and HASS and Malcolm McDonald will return after recovering from his surgery. Many thanks to all the relief teachers who have worked during Term 2 to help in these areas. Secondary students acted as coaches and umpires for the Primary Winter Carnival in Katanning. They did an excellent job and discovered how hard it can be when some of your team are doing handstands in the back row instead of watching the game they are part of! Miss Johnston has had a very busy time this term with Inter-House Cross Country, Inter-School Cross Country and Primary Winter Carnival in Katanning to organise within six days. She did a great job with the assistance of the Sports Management Committee and she is to be commended for this. Parents will have the chance to speak with secondary teachers regarding their child’s Semester 1 report during parent meetings on Thursday 27

th July in the school library. This will be in the second week of next term. Forms have been

included with secondary reports to indicate the teachers who you would like to meet with. Return the completed forms to the Front Office next term. I wish all students, parents and families an enjoyable break and hope that everyone is able to remain safe and healthy for next term (even if they have to avoid motor bikes to do so).

On Wednesday 7

th June KDHS held the Primary Speech and Drama Festival; we had students from: Broomehill PS,

Cranbrook PS, Frankland PS, Gnowangerup DHS, Katanning PS, Kendenup PS, Kojonup DHS, St Bernard’s PS, St Patrick’s PS and Tambellup PS. The festival was opened by Mr Peter Callaghan with final instructions given by Mr Gill. We had three rooms in operation, each having their own judge, scribes and MC who had to judge over 195 performances in total. On Thursday 8

th June we held our Secondary Speech and Drama Festival; this year we were joined by Gnowangerup

DHS, Katanning SHS and Great Southern Grammar, which shared in 43 performances.

This year I had the privilege of watching some of the students audition, we have some absolutely amazing talent in this school. You were all amazing I just wish that we could have entered you all. Thank you to our wonderful teachers Mrs Hill, Mrs Dezotti-Hartnup and Mr Melville for all the work that they have done with their students in preparation for this event, you should be very proud; they were awesome. Thank you also to the parents for helping their child be ready for their performance. I had many comments from teachers from other schools regarding the high standard from our students. A huge thank you to our judges, scribes and MC’s: Pat Bunny, Karen Watson, Adele Ladyman, Jan Worts, David Forrester, Narelle Simpson, Sarah Pexton, Janet Evans, Andrea McGuire, Deb Elliott, Jen Egerton-Warburton, Jo Sullivan, Carissa Lawrence, Carol Nicholls, Julie Sullivan and Julie Parker. Without your help this special event would not be able to happen. Thank you to Annie Chomley, Annette Cooke, Tara Coole, Chantelle Evans, Lily Hope, Crystal Howell, Ashlee Ladyman, Toby McGuire, Harry Parker, Annabelle Trezise, Lochie Elliott and Zara Egerton-Warburton. You should all be very proud of yourselves and the way you represented our school; you all dressed smartly and behaved exceptionally. Thank you to the parents for allowing these students to help out. And thank you to everyone else that has contributed, your support is very much appreciated. Marcelle Howe Coordinator

INTER-HOUSE CROSS COUNTRY Aquila – 1115 Hercules – 1107 Phoenix – 997

On the 16

th June, we held our annual Inter-House Cross Country/Adidas Fun-Run event. The event included Pre-Primary –

Year 10 and was a chance for students to fundraise money through Adidas Fun-Run (CUA School Fun Run) which goes towards the Physical Education Program at Kojonup District High School. In return students receive a prize. On the day, students ran courses of different lengths, from 1km up to 4.2km; through various terrain, including up at the School Farm (depending on age groups). Points received from placing’s went towards house points and championship points which resulted in a Champion and Runner-up Boy and Girl from each age group and a Champion House; the results are below. Congratulations to Aquila who were our House Champions and to the students who received winner and runner-up medals. Students had spent time in Physical Education improving their fitness by running the practice track, playing fitness games, doing the beep test and more. Students were also able to dress up in their house colours and put on a fashion parade, which resulted in a male and female winner from each faction. Thank you to everyone involved in the planning, organisation and delivery of the carnival and thank you to the students for fundraising around $3,500 for the PE Department! Such a fantastic effort and the day would not have been possible without the parent helpers, Sports Management Committee and staff. INTER-SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY

On the 22

nd June 2017, Kojonup District High School held the Inter-School Cross Country Carnival up at the School Farm.

Schools included Boddington, Jerramungup, Gnowangerup, Lake Grace, Ravensthorpe and Wagin which was a fantastic turn out.

Competitors ranged from 9 years old to 15+ years old and distances were 2km, 3km and 4km. Tracks were marked in different colours and had students running through paddocks, creeks, up hills, down hills and around obstacles. All the students were very well behaved and the day ran smoothly with a strong breeze testing the runners and the recorders. We had many of our non-running students helping on checkpoints and in various other roles which saw an opportunity to experience and display maturity and responsibility.

Competitors were all very positive on the day and the sportsmanship I witnessed was admirable. I thank all the students for competing and doing so well.

Points received from placing’s went towards championship points which resulted in a Champion, 2nd

Place and 3rd

Place boy and girl from each age group, an Overall Winner and a Handicap Winner; there was also a number of records broken, the results are below.

Thank you to all the schools for attending, KDHS staff, parent help and Sports Management Committee for assisting in everything. A fantastic day was had by everyone and it is all thanks to the wonderful helpers in this community.
