Kochi Biennale Foundation (Annual Report 2013-14)

The Board of Trustees have pleasure in presenting the Kochi Biennale Foundation’s

Annual Report for the financial year 2013-14. The Audited state of accounts for the year

ended 31st March 2014 is an integral part of the current Annual Report. The Balance sheet of the

Foundation for the year ended 31st March was examined by M/s Vimal Jose & Associates, Charted

Accountants under Sec 12A (b) of the income-tax Act, 1961, in the case of charitable Trust.

The Kochi Biennale Foundation (KBF) is a non-profit charitable trust engaged in

promoting art & culture and educational activities in India; primary amongst them the

hosting of Kochi-Muziris Biennale. KBF works around the year to promote national

consensus on investment in contemporary art infrastructure and to broaden public access to

art across India.

The Kochi Biennale Foundation is also engaged in

• Preservation / enhancement of heritage properties and monuments

• Revival of places of historic interest

• Revival and promotion of traditional forms of art and culture

• Art Education through programmes such as Artist Residency, Children’s/Student’s

Biennale

• Conducting National and International Seminars and

• Promotion of National and International brotherhood and co-operation

The Foundation was registered in 4-8-2010 under the Indian Trusts Act 1882

Kochi-Muziris Biennale

The Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB) is an international exhibition of contemporary art hosted in the

city of Kochi, India. The Biennale is a platform for new Indian and international aesthetics and art

experiences, and seeks to sustain a space that protects and projects the freedom of artistic

invention.The Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB) also seeks to invoke the historic cosmopolitan legacy of

the modern metropolis of Kochi, and its predecessor, the ancient port of Muziris

The First Edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale was organized from 12th December 2012 to 17th

March 2013 and exhibited artworks in venues spread across Fort Kochi and Ernakulam. This included

existing exhibition sites, public spaces, heritage buildings and other non-traditional venues.

Alongside the exhibitions, the Kochi Biennale Foundation organised an extensive public programme

of seminars, workshops and a comprehensive and far-reaching educational programme. There were

89 Artists from 23 countries in the 1st Edition. The Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2012 was curated by Bose

Krishnamachari and Riyas Komu.

Contribution to Society

The Biennale was aimed at not only transforming Kerala into a cultural hotspot of the country, but

also expected to benefit the entire country economically and socially. Public funding of the arts and

culture can play a vital role in encouraging creative innovation.

Preparation for Kochi Muziris Biennale 2014 The Second Edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale has been planned for opening on 12th

December 2014. The Artistic Advisory Committee of the Foundation identified Mr Jitish Kallat, an

internationally acclaimed Artist as the Curator of the Second Edition. Based on the recommendation

of the Advisory Committee, the Board of Trustees have already engaged Mr Jitish Kallat has the

Curator. A detailed programme and action plan for various activities of the main exhibition and the

parallel programmes have also been prepared for implementation. Discussions continued on a

regular basis with Government of Kerala and Non-Governmental supporters for mobilising support

for the Second Edition of the Biennale.

AUDIT AND ACCOUNTABILITY

The Kochi Biennale Foundation understands the need to maintain proper book-keeping and

accounts as the event is being conducted with public money. We hold ourselves to the highest level

of accountability. Kochi Biennale Foundation appointed an independent auditor to conduct monthly

/ quarterly internal audits and submit the reports to the Govt. of Kerala for the CAG Audit.

On behalf of Board of Trustees we also express our sincere thanks to all those who are engaged in

the work of the Kochi Biennale Foundation and the Kochi-Muziris Biennale. We also express our

appreciation and gratitude to all our supporters for their support and co-operation.
