3.1
Def,nillons
For
the
purpose
of
this
Standard
the
following
definitions
shall
apply.
However
for
additionaldetails
refer
to APt
520 and
API 576:
3.1.1
Accumulation
Accumulation
is
the
pressure
increase over
the maximum
allowable
working
pressure
of the vessel during
discharge through
the
pressure
relief
valve,
expressed
as
a
percentage
of
that
pressure,
or actual
pressure
units.
3,1.2
Back Pressure
This
is
the
pressure
due
to
the
combined effect of superimposed
and
built-up
back
pressure
in
the
discharge
side of
the valve.
Superimposed
back
pressure
is the static
pressure
in the
discharge
header
before
the
safety
relief
valve
opens.
b)
ConstantSuperimposedBackpressure
This
type
of
back
pressure
remains
essentially
at
a
fixed
value
(constant)
and exists
(superimposed) continuously
prior
to
and during
opening of
the valve.
c)
\/ariable
Supqrimposed
Backpressure
Ihis type of back
pressure
varies
or
changes over
a range
from
a
minimum
to
a maximum,
or
vice versa,
The
actual
back
pressure
at
any
specific time depends
on
conditions
in the
píping
system
to
which
the
outlet
of
the
valve
ís
connected,
3.1.3
Blowdown
Blowdown
is
the
difference between
set
pressure
and
reseating
(closing)
pressure
of
a
pressure
relief
valve,
expressed
as
a
percentage
of
the
set
pressure,
or in
actual
pressure
units.
3.1.4
Built-up Back
Pressure
Built-up
back
pressure
is
the
pressure
which develops
at
the valve outlet
as
a
result of
flow through
the
valve, after the
pressure
relief
valve has
opened.

3.1.6
Closing Pressure
The closing
pressure
is
the
point
at which the
pressure
relief
valve
recloses.
This
signifies
the
value of decreasing
inlet
static
pressure
at which
the valve
disc
re-establishes
contact
with the
seat
or at
which lift
becomes
zero,
as
determined
by seeing, feeling
or hearing.
3.1.7
Cold
Differential
Test Pressure
(CDÏP)
Cold
differential test
pressure
is the set
pressure
at
which
the
valve
is
adjusted to
open on
the
test stand.
This
pressure
includes
the
corrections for
back
pressure
and/or temperature and
service conditions.
3.1.8
Conventional
Safety Relief Valve
A
conventional
safety
relief valve
is a
direct
spring
loaded
pressure
relief
valve
whose
operational
characteristics
i.e.
opening
pressure,
closing
pressure,
and

are directly
affected
by changes
in
the
back
pressure.

Flutter
Flutter
is the

The maximum

at
the designated

than
that
used

Consequently,
for

The

Pressure-Relief
Valve
(PRV)
A
pressure
relief
valve
is
a
pressure-relief
device
designed
to
open
and
relieve
excess
pressure
and
to
reclose and
prevent
further
flow
of
fluid
after
norrnal
conditions have
been
restored.
A
pressure-relief
valve opens when
its
upstream
pressure
reaches
the
opening
pressure.
lt
then
allows the fluid
to
flow
until
its
upstream
pressure
falls
to
the
closing
pressure.
lt then
closes
preventing
any
further
flow.
Examples
of
specific
types
of
pressure-relief
valve
include Safety
Valve,
Relief-valve, Conventional
Safety
Relief Valve,
Balanced
Safety
ìelief
Valve,
and
Pilot-operated
Pressure-relief
Valve.
3.1.21
Pressu e-Relief
Device
(PRÐ)
The Pressure Relief
Device
comprises
of
the Pressure
Relief
Valve, the
Relief
Valve,
t.he
Safety
Relief
Valve,
the
Safety
Valve, and
the
Rupture
Disk
etc. As
such the
PRD could
be any
of
the
above
device
intended
to
protect
the
pressure
vessels, equ[pment
and
personnel
by
automatically
opening
at
predetermined
pressures
and
preventing
the
destructive consequences
due
to
excess
ve
pressures.
3.1.22
Pressu, e
Vacuum
Valve
(PW)
A
weight
loaded, spring-loaded
valve,
used
to relieve excess
pressure
and /or
vacuum
that
has developed
in an atmospheric
or
low
pressure
storage
tank.
3.1.?3
Rated
Capacity
Rated
:apacity
is the
percentage
of
rneasured
flow
at
an
authorized
percent
overpressure
permitted
by the applicable
code.
Rated capacity
is
generally
expres::ed
in
kilograms
per
hour
(kg/hr)
or
pounds
per
hour
(lbslhr)
for
Vapours.
For
gases
it is
expressed
in normal
cubic
meters
per
minute
(NCM/rnin)
or
mtlmin
or standard
cubic
feet
per
minute
(SCFM),
and
for
liquids
ín
litres
per
minute
(L/min) or
gallons per
minute
(GPM),
3.1.24
Relief
t/alve
(RV)
A
relief
valve
is
a
spring loaded
pressure relief
valve actuated
by
the
static
pressu-e
upstream
of
the
valve and
it
opens
normally
in
proportion
to
the
pressure increase
over the
opening pressure.
A
relief valve begins
to
open
when
ihe
static inlet
pressure reaches
set
pressure.
As the
static
inlet
pressure overcomes
the
spring
force,
the
disk
begins
to
lift
off
the
seat,
allowing
flow
of the
liquid.
The
value
of the
closing
pressure
is less than that
of
the
set
pressure and will
be reached
after
the blowdown
phase
is
completed,
Relief
valves
are normally
used
for incompressible
fluids i,e.
liquids.

Valve
(SVJ
A
safety
valve
is
a
spring
loaded
pressure-relief
valve
that
ìs actuated
by
the
static
pressure upstream of
the
valve and
characterized
by
rapid
opening
or
pop
action.
When the static
inlet
pressure
reaches
the set
pressure
it
will
increase
the
pressure
ìn
the huddling
chamber and
overcome
the spring force
on
the
disk.
This
will
cause
the disk to
lift
and
provide
full
opening
at
minimal
overpressure.
A
safety
valve
is
normally
intended
for
compressible
fluids
such
as
gas,
air
or
vapor
etc.
3,1.28
Seat Tightness
Pressure
Seat
tightness pressure
is
the
specified
inlet static
pressure
at
which
a
quantitàtrve
seat
leakage
test
is
performed
in
accordance
with
a
standard
procedure,
3.1.29
Set Pressure
Set
pressure
is the
gauge
pressure
at the
valve
inlet,
for
which
the
safety
relief
valve has
been set
to
open
under service
conditions,
ln liquid
service,
set
pressure
is
determined
by
the
inlet
pressure
at
which the
valve
starts
to
disc'harge.
ln
gas
or
Vapour
service,
the
set
pressure
is determined
by
the
lnlet
pressure
at
which
the
valve
pops.
3.1

Simmer
Simmer
is characterized
by the audible
passage
of a
gas
or
vapor
across
the
seating
surfaces
just
prior
to
pop .
The
difference
between
this
start
to
open
pressu-re
and
the
set
pressure
is
simrner,
and
is
generally
expressed
as
a
percentage
of
set
Pressure.
