His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Her Majesty Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha binti Al-Marhum Pengiran Pemancha Pengiran Anak Haji Mohamed Alam graced the opening ceremony of the Knowledge Convention 2019 to mark His Majesty’s 73rd birthday celebration at the Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah in Jalan Pengiran Babu Raja. His Majesty delivered a titah and officiated the Knowledge Convention 2019 and officiated the naming of the permanent building of Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.

Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah is an embodiment of His Majesty’s wish to preserve Islamic knowledge and heritage, and encourage these through research and studies for the benefit of the community and the people. His Majesty then presented the National Knowledge Award, which carries the title Honorary Professor. to Pehin Jawatan Dalam Seri Maharaja Dato Seri Utama (Dr) Haji Awang Mohd Jamil Al-Sufri bin Begawan Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Seri Paduka Haji Awang Umar.

The theme Manuskrip Islam Mercu Tanda Ketamadunan Umat brings forward the Islamic knowledge treasure as a very beneficial heritage for the cultural and civilisation catalyst of Ummah. A BLA TALK AND GET TO KNOW SESSION

A BLA Talk and Get to Know Session with more than 40 Diploma Library Informatics and Computing students at Politeknik Brunei was held on 15 October 2019 at Politeknik Brunei. Cg Nurul Rasyidah Ab Durahman of SCIT welcomed BLA delegation of three. Also present was Tn Hj Abu Bakar. Pn Hjh Nellie, BLA President gave a motivational talk on the benefits of being a librarian and the challenges ahead due to the ever changing landscape of new librarianship. She also

touched on the need for librarians to acquire the 21 st century skills and competencies to stay relevant and how to adapt to the ever changing transformation brought about by the changing lifestyle and users learning behaviours and concept of user-centric services in libraries and she mentioned newer trends like digital collections, maker spaces, cooking studio, and the Library of Things. She reiterated that as librarians we should uphold and be proud to stay as librarians. Four students shared outcome of their projects. After questions and answers, Pn Hjh Nellie shared and highlighted the purpose and activities of the Brunei Darussalam Library Association including its success stories. She then invited the students to join BLA as members and encouraged them to join library study visits abroad. Dy Amal Syukriyyah, BLA Assistant Secretary added that from her own experiences she benefitted enormously by joining BLA. As a new comer to the profession BLA gave her the opportunity to network and rub shoulders with librarians from other libraries, access to mentorship, advice and guidance from more senior members of BLA, opportunity to participate in professional development programmes , and joining study visits local and abroad which are eye openers. BLA wishes to record its appreciation and thank you to Cg Nurul Rasyidah for organising the event and BLA looks forward to more interaction with students in the future.

BALAI KHAZANAH ISLAM SULTAN HAJI HASSANAL BOLKIAH

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam consented to name the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Islamic Exhibition Hall as the Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah on 13 October 2019 during the launching of the Knowledge Convention 2019. In the titah, the monarch regards the Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah as similar to Baitul Hikmah during the era of Abbasiyyah rule in Baghdad because of its huge role for the progress of Islam and the Ummah. Touching on civilisation of the Ummah, His Majesty said we normally reflect on the Islamic civilisation during the Abbasiyyah era in Baghdad during the reign of two caliphs, Harun Al-Rashid and Al-Ma’mun, when knowledge related activities such as discussions, research, writing and translating were conducted by Baitul Hikmah. His Majesty further highlighted that these activities succeeded in producing great scholars such as Al-Kindi, Al-Farabi, Al-Ghazali and many others and added that Baitul Hikmah was not only a library but also the meeting point for intellectuals and scholars. The Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah is similar to Baitul Hikmah because of its wide role such as collecting, preserving, studying and spreading knowledge treasure for the progress of Islam and the Ummah in general. MUSHAF GALLERY @ BALAI KHAZANAH SULTAN HAJI HASSANAL BOLKIAH

540 handwritten and printed Mushaf or Al-Quran are exhibited at the Mushaf Gallery of Balai Khazanah Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah at Jalan Pengiran Babu Raja. The gallery houses some of the oldest A-Quran aged one thousand years, as well as those which are 800, 600, 500 and 400 years old. The Mushaf Gallery displays a 382 pages giant sized Mushaf measuring 1300 by 690 centimetres. The Mushaf written with black ink in the Naskh script is decorated with motifs in the shape of flower leaves and an Islamic geometrical frame. The huge Al-Quran was written in 1205 Hijrah. Also on display is a 100 percent handwritten Mushaf by Muzaffer Demir from the town of Gaziantep in Eastern Turkey. Seven Al-Quran published by Brunei Darussalam are exhibited as well. The unique beauty of the Mushaf Gallery is highlighted by the arrangement of 594 pieces of stone Al-Quran aged 400 years old on the gallery's walls inside and outside. The pieces of stone Al-Quran are chiseled inscriptions ordered by an Indian Mogul or Muslim King, Sultan Muhtiddin Aurengzeb in 1078 Hijrah. The gallery also showcases 2 Al-Quran about one thousand years old which are still in mint condition. The Mushaf or Al-Quran on display are handwritten and printed in various styles or scripts including the Naskh, Kufi, Tuluth, Parsi and Jawi. They are from the 16th to the 20th centuries. There are other unique mushaf in different sizes and designs, including one that can only be read by using a magnifying glass as well as several small leaf-shaped Al-Quran. The mushaf or Al-Quran are also from different periods such as the eras of Safawiyyah, Mamluk, Zandiyyah and Qajar. STUDY VISIT TO PAZ TARBIYYAH

A group of thirteen BLA members visited PAZ Tarbiyyah on Monday 21 October 2019. It was led by Pn Hjh Nellie, BLA President. We were welcomed by Dy Noraini, Administrative Officer. PAZ Tarbiyyah is Brunei’s first Islamic enrichment centre for children.– began at the end of 2015 with the eponymously titled Tarbiyyah Project for Kids. At its core is the Asmaul Husna (the 99 names of Allah); – their

transliteration, meaning and explanation which reflects God’s attributes. Located on the first floor of the 694@Delima Building in Serusop, which can accommodate some twenty children, it is designed and built by Luxe Development around the founding duo’s concept of purposeful play, equipped with a slide, mini-rock climbing wall, a central dome for praying and an ablution area that doubles as a demonstrative display, students share seamless connecting tables with animal-shaped wooden chairs to encourage interaction, surrounded by hydroponic systems and a fish tank housing tilapia.source:paztarbiyyah.com

SULTAN’S SCHOLARS

The Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Sultan’s Scholar Scholarship is a prestigious scholarship first introduced in 2006 and is awarded to students identified by the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Religious Affairs as excellent students in academic studies and extra-curricular activities to further their studies in various academic fields at prestigious higher learning institutions overseas that have been approved by the Yayasan and accredited by the government of His Majesty The aim is to produce knowledgeable, skilled, disciplined and well-mannered individuals for the long-term benefits of the Religion, Monarch and Nation.

From 2006 to 2008, three students each year were awarded with 'Sultan's Scholar'.

Starting in 2013, the Yayasan expanded the Sultan's Scholar scholarship to a scheme for further studies up to the Doctor of Philosophy or PhD level. To date 47 Sultan's Scholars have been awarded the scholarship and 33 have completed their studies and are working in the government and private sectors. 2006/2007

Wafi bin Hj Abd Manan, 18, received three 'A's and one 'B' in his 'A'-Level subjects and 11 'A's and One

'B' in his BGCE O-Level result. Wafi will study Bsc Politics and Philosophy, London School of Economics, United Kingdom. He was the recipient of excellence student awards for secondary school and colleges in BGCE 'O' Level, (2009), UGCSE/GCSE 'O' Level; Academic Award Jerudong Intenational School (JIS) (2009 & 2010), Sixth Form Arts Award; 'Creative Writing' JIS (2010); Anugerah Cemerlang in 'A'-Level History (2011); International Gateway for Gifted Youth (IGGY) (2008); and Malaysian Model United Nations (2006).

Siti Musfirah binti Misli, 20, will study Syariah at University of Al-Azhar, Egypt .

Siti Musfirah scored eight subjects in STPUB (2010) and achieved Grade 1 in Al-Quran, Tarikh Islam & Tarikh Tasyrie', Qawa'ed Arabiyyah and Lughhah 'Arabiyyah. She also achieved 11 subjects in SPUB (2008) and achieved Grade 1 in Arab Language, Tauhid and Al-Quran.

She was very active in school extra curricular activities. She was a very active member of Syababul Qur'an Club (2009-2010); Editor of Arabic Language for annual school magazine of Sekolah Arab Laki-Laki Hassanal Bolkiah (SMALHB) (2010); participant in deliberating a research paper in Halal Product/ Brunei Halal (2010); participated in the Hafaz Al- Quran Competition and its Understanding (2004-2007); participated in Dkir Diba'ie competition (2008); and in Secondary School Nasyid Competition (2008).

It was established on 28 September 2017 under the MPABD Order 2017 which stipulates that the functions of MPA include licensing and regulatory functions in respect of merchant shipping and particularly in respect of safety at sea, the manning of vessels and the prevention of pollution at sea within ports areas and territorial waters of Brunei Darussalam.

The JA Company programme is the flagship entrepreneurship programme which has enjoyed success in the past years. Since 2014, 489 students from 12 secondary schools have benefitted from the programme. The winning team will represent Brunei Darussalam at the 2020 Asia Pacific JA Company of the Year Competition to be held in March 2020 in Guam, Island Territory of the United States.

3 Oct 2019 Universiti Technologi Brunei, UTB, won USB30 thousand first prize under the category of 'Best Non-Government Organisations, NGO's, Leading Practices' for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Award for Environmental Management, KSAAEM in the Islamic World for 2018-2019. The winning project was "Mitigating Floods and Fire Hazards in Forestry Using Internet of Things, IoT, System in Brunei Darussalam." The prestigious award was presented at an opening ceremony of the 8th Islamic Conference of Environment Ministers held at the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, ISESCO Headquarters in Rabat, Morocco. The award was granted by the General Authority of Meteorology and Environmental Protection in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and ISESCO. The project was led by Dr. Wida Susanty binti Haji Suhaili, Assistant Professor from the School of Computing and Informatics, UTB along with other members of the team which include graduates from the University, Nurul Wardah binti Haji Hamzah and Siti Aisyah binti Haji Jalil. According to Dr. Wida, the project was an attempt to use the IoT system in Brunei particularly in the peatland area.

5 Oct 2019 The 3rd Brunei Bird Race Series 2019 Labi Edition was launched with the aim to detect more bird species through bird watching. One hundred and one bird species were recorded from the two previous series. 12 participants took part in the competition that was held at areas in Jalan Labi and Bukit Labi.

5 Oct 2019 27 th anniversary of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah which was established with the consent of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam on 5 October 1992 to mark the Silver Jubilee Celebration of His Majesty’s Accession to the Throne. The establishment of Yayasan is a charity platform for donation from His Majesty and members of the royal family as a show of concern and care of the benevolent ruler for the people as well as to shape a prosperous and peaceful community.

In second place was Mohd Nazirul Redhwan bin Haji Muhd Masuni, who captured 28 bird species on film over the course of the two-day competition, followed by Norsah bin Haji Kassim in third place with 24 bird species. A special prize was also handed out to Mohd Nazirul Redhwan, for taking a photo of the rarely seen Bornean Bristlehead (Pityriasis gymnocephala), a small Borneo endemic bird with unusual red-and-black feathers. Capturing it on film was a first, not only in the area of Labi, but also for the entire country.

6 Oct 2019 A local Tv Drama, 'The Bungsu Story', about two students who are seeking success in creative art in the hope of making their parents proud jointly produced by Filterworks Productions and Lailatul Shazana's Production was nominated for the international award. The Tv Drama was the only local drama that has been nominated in the Best Asia Drama category for First Asia Contents Awards which will take place in Busan, South Korea. The award is a new one introduced from the Busan International Film Festival and Asia Film Market.

10 Oct 2019 Defense Academy's Graduation Ceremony for Cohort 9 of The Command and Staff Course. A total of 30 officers comprising officers from the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, RBAF and Royal Brunei Police Forces RBPF as well as 13 international participants from Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Thailand and the United States completed the course. This year, the Overall Excellence Award was given to Major Dai Jing from Singapore Armed Forces.
