1High blood pressure is asymptomatic and can lead to serious health problemsA population group that rarely receives attention in this area is men Focus on menGoal - reach out to this population groupService

High blood pressure is often asymptomatic and can lead to serious health problems if left untreated. A population group that rarely receives attention in this area is men. Often, at events geared towards women one can find a blood pressure booth. Unfortunately, this does not seem to be a trend at functions geared towards men. Our group would like to create a mobile blood pressure booth that focuses on men and that can be found at events geared towards men. It is our goal to reach out to this population group in an appealing, convenient and comfortable environment to offer primary prevention services for high blood pressure at no cost.

2Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threat (SWAT)Internal strengths One internal weakness Offering education and screening for blood pressure Possible threatStrengths and Weaknesses

A Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threat (SWAT) analysis was conducted of our proposed service. Several internal strengths were uncovered such as: availability of trained staff, free brochures from the Michigan Department of Community Health, equipment from the local hospital and willingness of group members to donate funds for our booth's sign. One internal weakness is our ability to cover staff salaries; we will be seeking volunteers and grant funds to overcome this obstacle. We feel that the fact that there are currently no booths of this kind at men's events a large external opportunity. The governments increased focus on wellness is also an external opportunity. A booth offering education and screening for blood pressure at these events would be ideal in reaching men that would normally not seek out this service. One threat is the possibility that a booth of this kind would not be received well at these events. However, an informal survey of several men suggested they would be very open to having a booth, such as ours, at events geared towards men. We feel a SWAT analysis supports the need and viability of our proposed booth.

5To increase the male populations understanding of heart disease and risk factors through a fun, one day blood pressure screening event.Goal

Our goal is to increase local mens understanding about heart disease and risk factors in a short, fun event such as auto shows or hunting expos.6To screen 50% of men visiting a non-healthcare event such as a car show for high blood pressure. To educate men at a one day event of the importance of knowing their blood pressure and how the different stages of high blood pressure can cause diseases such as heart disease and stroke. To provide men educational handouts and brochures of community resources available for blood pressure checks such as American Heart Association events and Michigan Departments of Community Health events. Objectives

Our booth will be primarily manned by volunteers, greatly reducing our fiscal year costs. The one paid position will be that of the Coordinator. Since our booth is not a daily operation, this is part-time position that comes with part-time fringe benefits. Non-personnel costs mainly consist of travel and office expenses. We feel our booth could provide a high quality, valuable service with minimal costs that would only result in positive health outcomes. Considering the impact our booth will have on mens health our estimated operations budget is minimal. 17

Appraisal for Know YOUR Pressure

As a community outreach project, Know YOUR Pressure believes that this adventure would run well on volunteer power. This is a great opportunity for student volunteers to put their care into action for men who undeserved by health care. We believe that we will attract volunteers and donors because we are only interested in taking our services to the venues that attract men.The annual expense of $42,448.61 is well within the reach of grants and donations and fiscally responsible. The major expense of one part time employee is strategic to success.
