Knots is an online community that provides space for all types of artists to sell their products. It is dedicated to establishing a positive relationship between buyer and seller, as well as promoting the significance and unique qualities of homemade goods.

The company was founded by several young artists determined to create a place with a trustworthy relationship between buyers and sellers. They sought out the best way to market such a thing, and decided that their best bet was to emphasize the idea of “homemade goods”. These individuals not only wanted space for artists to sell, but also for anyone dedicated to knitting or doing any other sort of craft. Ultimately, they wanted to ensure that, through their company (and website) more people would understand the concept that creations inspire connections (this is where the company’s name came from—knots may be messy and hard to untangle, but they demonstrate well the type of lasting connections that evolve out of creative communities). While money can be valuable, connections and relationships are often much more valuable in the artistic world.

Mission statement/tagline: Create, inspire, connect.

DESIGN STRATEGY

The website is designed in a way that makes the seller (the artist) feel just as important as the buyer and encourages a positive and interactive relationship between the two. The feeling that users should get when they enter the website should not be one of disconnect, but one of inclusion and comfort. It is also a website that is fairly easy enough to navigate for someone who is less tech-savy, but not too simple so that those that use the internet more frequently would get frustrated.

It is designed to encourage users to browse the selection of goods, learn about the purpose of the company, and read more about the artists. It is also an option for users to sign up for their own account on the site. This way, they can be even more involved with the mission of Knots. While the buyer/seller relationship is an important goal of the site, its main purpose is to make it easy for users to browse the selection of items.

COLOR PALETTE DESCRIPTION

The website that I created is very colorful. The main colors that make up the pages themselves are hot cinnamon, grandis, sinbad, and rajah. However, these colors also alternate as type in some areas of the website. For example, grandis is used in the type for the logo in the header. Hot cinnamon is used to show what sections of type the user’s mouse is resting on in some of the subpages. An important note about the color is that opacity was adjusted in certain areas of colors, changing them slightly.

The varied and bright color scheme is meant to give the website a friendlier feel. The darker red color, named crown of thorns, is used in the designs throughout these bright colors in order to accent certain areas. This grounds the website and keeps it from becoming too bubbly and happy. The yellow and orange colors definitely provide enough of that; Knots isn’t a company that takes itself too seriously.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The main audience that this website is trying to reach are those that have a true interest in art and the artists themselves. These people will understand the website best, however the site is also a good way for people who are unfamiliar with Knots and their mission to learn more. Knots, as an organization, wants to reach as many people as possible. However, the reality of it is that an artistic crowd is most likely the group that will use the site the most.

It is important to also note that the clothing aspect of this website, along with the home decor section, would potentially draw a very different crowd from the ‘artsy’ crowd. These are regular people (most likely women, but the site specifically does not ignore the fact that men might also be attracted to the website) who are just looking for something that is of good quality to buy. Whether it is a hand-knitted scarf, a hand-blown glass vase, or a hand-carved wooden table, these people would find it at Knots.

WEBSITE GOALS

The purpose of this website is the foster a creative community for artists as well as crafters. It works to ensure the integrity of the sellers; not one seller on the Knots site is disrespectful of the mission statement that the company holds dear. It is a place where people can go in search of quality, hand-crafted goods that are sold by reliable human beings with a face and a name.

Some of the actions that users will take are browsing the selection of goods, reading the site’s daily blog (posted on by both artists and the creators of the company themselves), learning more about the purpose of the company, learning about the artists that sell on the site (there are thousands), and signing up for their very own Knots account.

This is the skeletal structure of the website before the design work. It looks very similar to the finished product; much of the interest of the website lies within the playful color scheme rather than just in design (although there are some design aspects included).
