TENSIONTo ensure your knitting has the same measurements as the pattern, its a good idea to make a tension swatch before you start your project. A tension swatch is a small sample of your knitting where you count the stitches and rows and check them against the tension given in the pattern. (If you get MORE stitches/rows than the patterns tension, it means your knitting is tighter. If you get FEWER, it means your knitting is looser.)

    Stocking stitch:10 cm/4 = 16 stitches 10 cm/4 = 22 rows

    HOW TO KNIT YOUR HEMINGWAY

1 With Woolly Bully Alpaca, cast on 74 stitches.

2 Knit the 1st stitch, then work in 2x2 rib stitch until 1 stitch remains. Knit the last stitch.

3 Purl the 1st stitch, work in 2x2 rib stitch until 1 stitch remains, purl this stitch.

4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 until your hat measures 25 cm/10 from the cast on edge (approx. 55 rows). Your last row should be step 3.

5 Now start shaping the top of the hat: knit the 1st stitch, knit 2 stitches together, purl 2 stitches, knit 2 stitches, purl 2 stitches. Repeat the section inside the little stars another 8 times, knit the last stitch.

6 From now on, always work the section inside the stars a total of 9 times. Purl the first stitch, knit 2 stitches, purl 2 stitches, knit 2 stitches, purl 1 stitch. Purl the last stitch.

9 Decrease row: knit the 1st stitch, knit 1 stitch, purl 2 stitches together, knit 1 stitch, purl 2 stitches. Knit the last stitch.

10 Purl 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches, purl 1 stitch, knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch. Purl the last stitch.

11 Decrease row: knit the 1st stitch, knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch, knit 1 stitch, purl 2 stitches together. Knit the last stitch.

12 Purl 1 stitch, knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch, knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch. Purl the last stitch. (38 sts left.)

13 Cut the yarn, leaving a 40 cm/15 tail. Thread your knitters sewing needle with this tail, and pass it through all your stitches, then remove the knitting needle. Gently pull on the yarn until the top of the hat closes up.

    ASSEMBLY AND FINISHING

1 With your knitters sewing needle and a long strand of yarn, sew the side edges together using the invisible vertical seam technique.

2 Weave in the loose ends.

TENSION SQUARETo ensure your knitting has the samemeasurements as the pattern, you need to knita tension square before you start knitting your project. A tension square is a small sample of your knitting where you count the stitches and rows and check them against the measurement (cm/in) given. If your tension sample does not match the tension square measurements, then you should try to knit either tighter or looser depending on whether your sample was too big or too small.
