NEWS FROM THE SCOUTS

The Scouts of Pack 717, Troop 664, and Crew 664 are as always active and having fun.

PACK 717 is getting ready for their join night. We anticipate some big growth this year. The Pack did a service project pulling weeds and some minor landscaping at Woodland Elementary School.

TROOP 664 recently held their after Summer Court of Honor. 4 Scouts advanced to the next rank, 65 merit badges were awarded, 7 Scouts received the Mile Swim award, 3 Scouts earned the Snorkeling BSA Award, and two of the Scouts were awarded the World Conservation award. It was a busy summer for the Scouts of 664.The Troop came in Third Place at the Fairview “Chili on the Green” event. The Scouts came up with an awesome chili that warms the belly, but does not burn on the way down. And the Scoutmaster won the Camp Baldwin cowboy cook off. They wrapped up their elections, and are excited about the outcome. It should be another great year of Scouting for us. The summer culminated with a great canoe trip out on the coast over the Labor Day weekend. It was one of the best camp outs we have been on.On the horizon, we will be heading down to Butte Creek in October along with 3 Cub Scout Packs Webelos Den’s to show them a thing or two about camping.

CREW 664 has been getting its act together. Made up of mostly the older boys of the Troop, the crew has been helpful in teaching the younger Scouts skills.

The Crew is scheduled to do a service project along the Spring Water Trail this month.

Check us out on the web at: http://www.scoutingpages.org/us/or/troop664/

Thanks again for your continued support.

St. Padre Pio (1887-1968) Feast: Sept. 23rd

Born Francesco Forgione to poor farmers in Pietrelcina, Italy, in 1887, St. Padre Pio was marked by God to receive abundantly rich blessings. He took the habit of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin in 1903 and was ordained priest in 1910.

On September 20, 1918, while praying before the crucifix, Padre Pio received the stigmata, the visible marks of the wounds of Christ’s crucifixion. For the next 50 years, these wounds bled daily, reminding him in a most intimate way of the

Lord’s Passion. At the Mass of canonization in 2002, Pope John Paul II said:”throughout his life, (Padre Pio) always sought greater conformity with the Crucified, since he was very conscious of having been called to collaborate in a special way in the work of redemption.”

Padre Pio devoted himself to a fervent celebration of the sacrament of reconciliation. It is reported that he spend 10 to 12 hours daily hearing confessions.

Of course, St. Padre Pio’s effectiveness came not from himself but from his intimate union with God, which was nurtured by his long hours spent in prayer. The saint repeatedly counseled: “I am a poor Franciscan who

prays.” Despite the mystical gifts he received from God, and the miracles that frequently surrounded his ministry, Padre Pio was fundamentally one who prayed.

From St. Padre Pio, Knights should be inspired to meditate on the mystery of the Divine Mercy and celebrate regularly the sacrament of reconciliation. Above all, Knights should recognize their own call to be men who pray.Excerpts taken from the September Columbia monthly issue.
