Official Newsletter of the Knights of Columbus of Missouri “Protecting, Saving Lives and Changing Lives” JUNE, 2018 Knights of Columbus Charity ~ Unity ~ Fraternity ~ Patriotism Newsletter GENERAL PROGRAM DIRECTOR DOUG KISSINGER VOLUME 4, NO 12 MEMBERSHIP DIR. MIKE GRUDZINSKI COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR JOHN MAUTINO Also in June all Councils should be submitting your SP-7, Columbian Award Application. Do this as early in the month of June as possible. This allows time for your Council to cor- rect any errors if Supreme rejects your SP-7 for any reason. Last year we had four SP-7's rejected and we were able to help three of those Councils correct their forms. Remember while you still have to complete four programs in each of the six areas, at least four of those programs need to be designated as “Building the Domestic Church” programs. These programs can fit in several places on your SP-7. An example would be Food for Families counting as either a Family program or a Community program. If you need help please contact me. Your SP-7 must be received by Supreme by June 30, 2018. It will not be accepted late. All Councils and Assemblies should have received postcards to fill out to update your Directory information. Please fill those out and return them as soon as possible. We need to have those back by the deadline date of June 20th so that we can insure the directory is as accurate as possible. This information can also be entered online, by going to mokofc.org. On the home page go to Council forms and then Council and Assembly information. It is not too late to get recognition in Special Olympics’ new Training for Life Campus. There will be a Knights of Columbus Wall of Fame in the foyer of the center. Councils who complete a Gold, Silver or Bronze pledge by June 30th will be recognized on that wall when the TLC opens this fall. Contact Mary Niswonger at SOMO for more information. I want to thank all of you for your great work in programs this year. It has been an honor to serve you as Program Director. We had another great year, but lets finish strong. June is a great month to get things done. The Training for Life Cam- pus is will open this year! The ribbing cutting is set for Sep- tember 13th, and the Grand Opening is scheduled for No- vember 1st. Construction is on schedule. However, our progress for the $1.2 Million pledge to- wards the Training for Life Cen- ter has stalled. A lot of work is still left, and we should do all we can to see it through to the end. Please contact Chairman Lou Holtman for more information on making a pledge to the Train- ing for Life Campaign. Your Council may also increase its pledge. A new category of “Plati- num” support was recently cre- ated because a Council went double-Gold. Let’s see if we can get even more. We still have Councils that have not submitted a Final Re- port and\or donation to the Drive for Persons with Developmental Disabilities. If your Council has not yet submitted a Final Report, please do so as soon as possible. We desperately need to have all of the Final Reports and pro- ceeds checks. Even if your Coun- cil did not have a Drive this year, please let us know. If so, please consider making a donation. Every dollar helps. Finally, it is important that all funds gener- ated from the Drive pass through Columbian Charities. This is not only important from an account- ing and legal perspective, but it is also critical in order to main- tain the integrity of this pro- gram. We have wheelchairs avail- able for donation. Please let Life Services Chairman Matt Gray know if your Council knows of anyone who needs a wheelchair. If your Council needs to send a check in for Special Olympics, Agape House/Prison Concern, or the American Wheelchair Mission, please send them to the Treasurer for Columbian Chari- ties, Ralph Cupelli. Ralph’s mail- ing address is: Ralph Cupelli, 6 Circle Drive, Kirksville, MO 63501. Is hard to believe that this is my last article as your Membership Director. I will be honest and say that this is by far the most challenging position I have had in the Knights, but it is also the most rewarding. I will always remember how I was greeted into councils when I attended a Degree or other function. Your hospitality is greatly appreciated and I enjoyed meeting Knights from throughout the state. But back to the business at hand – ending this year strong and getting Missouri to that elite Circle of Honor status! In terms of membership, we are having our best year in a long time, and we have a very good chance to make Circle of Honor; but in order for that to happen we ALL need to get out and ask Catholic gentlemen to join us! We have several incentives (listed below) for individuals, Councils and District Deputies. And also remember that getting someone to join is much easier now through the Online Membership program. They can join on the spot by going to kofc.org/joinus. They will immediately begin to receive the benefits of membership at that time. Then when your council has an Admission Degree, he can “transfer” from being an “Online member” to a member in your council. If you have not looked at that website, I strongly suggest you do so, and take advance to what it can do us, especially in terms of recruiting younger members. Honoring our Bishops: $500 will be given to the Diocesan Vocations Fund for the most members brought in at an Admission Degree held in Honor of a Bishop. Current Schedule: St. Louis - May 31 - 7:30 PM hosted by Bishop’s Council #10490 Kansas City - June 7 - 7:00 PM hosted by Belton Council #5586 Jefferson City - June 13 - 6:30 PM hosted by Bishop McAuliffe Council #12992 Springfield-Cape Girardeau - TBA Help to Support Future Vocations in YOUR Diocese by Recruit- ing a Member and having him go through this Admission Degree! Individuals, Councils and Districts: I. The Individual who recruits the most new members May 1 - June 30 will win: 1st Place $300; 2nd Place $200; 3rd Place $100 II. The Council which brings in the most new members May 1 - June 30 will win: 1st Place $300; 2nd Place $200; 3rd Place $100 III. The District which brings in the most new members May 1 - June 30 will win: 1st Place $300; 2nd Place $200; 3rd Place $100 There is no way we would have been as successful as we have been this year without the help, guidance and mentorship given to me by State Deputy Joe Rosenthal - a true leader and friend. I also want to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of my Membership Team - Chuck Paquette, Tim Beussink, Tom Caffrey, Roger Hulett, Pat Carr, Pat Kennedy, Les Erwin, Charlie Schuster, Jason Kehl, Marvin Doerhoff, Dick Kobylski, Don Allen, Vic Bender, Ron Mathias, Ed Columbus, Tom Nelson, Bill Stump and Gus Bannick. I would also like to thank our General Agents Ryan Lister, Mike York and the late Gary Struemph, and their Field Agents, for the outstanding job they have done. I would also like to thank each and every District Deputy who took our message of membership back to their councils. Then I would like to thank each Grand Knight, Council Membership Director, and member who took our message to heart and worked to grow our Order. It has been a privilege to serve as the Membership Director for Missouri – one of the Elite jurisdictions in the Order! The month of June brings us to the start of summer and the end of the frater- nal year. While there is a lot that needs to be done to close out the last year, it is time to look forward to the next twelve months as well. Many of you know that Supreme is changing the Surge with Service pro- gram to Faith in Action. This program revamping will help us as Knights of Columbus continue to enhance our fine work. As a result, the youth activities will continue, but will be folded under another umbrella. Hence, this will be the last youth director article in the newsletter as our incoming state deputy, Bob Hawkins, has decided to follow Supreme’s lead and eliminate youth as a separate directorate. The Missouri youth chairmen will serve under the family director next year. Moreover, the youth protection requirements will change a bit as different directors within your council will now have to undergo the protection. As this is my last newsletter as your youth director, I would like to thank all of you for your attention this fraternal year. But especially, I want to thank my chairmen for all their hard work – without them our activities would not have been successful this year. They include John Myers with the Coats for Kids program, Aaron Wood with the soccer and free throw programs, David Govero with the poster and essay contests and Rocky Gambon, who oversaw the scholarship program. Finally, thanks to all of you for your work with the youth this year! YOUTH DIRECTOR LUCAS VOLKMAN Thank you to State Deputy JoeRosenthal and his lovely wife Beverly for your service to the Order.

This is the last month of the Fra-ternal Year, which gives you plenty oftime for your Council to meet its R.I.B.quota for this year. So that you knowexactly where your Council or Auxil-iary stands, R.I.B. Treasurer/Secretary,Eric Bruns has sent out contributionstatus information to the Distric Depu-ties and letters to Councils that have not

yet reached their quotas. If you did not receive this, please let eitherBrother Bruns or myself know so that we can get you this information. Please do not wait any longer to send in your contributions to theReligious Information Bureau, as we still need your help to reach ourgoal this year.

A bit of clean up from the State Convention for those of you who didnot pick up your Circle of Honor Certificates or R.I.B. pins. They willbe given to your District Deputy at the July meeting for distribution atyour follow up local District meeting. Even if your Council or Auxil-iary did not earn Circle of Honor Status this year you still have untilJune 30 to submit your contributions in order to reach the 100% or125% status level of your goal for this Fraternal Year.

If you need more pamphlets or brochures for your Council displayboards contact Catholic Home Study in Perryville at 573-547-4084 oremail [email protected].. With such great number coursenumbers and pamphlet orders this year, it is extremely important wemeet our financial goal for the year in order to cover the expenses ofadvertising and materials. At the beginning of the fraternal year we seta goal of $285,000 for contributions to the R.I.B. and we are a littleunder $30,000 short of this goal with one month remaining in thefraternal year. I am counting on you to help make this another recordyear for the Religious Information Bureau!

The Religious Information Bureau is a flagship program for thegreat jurisdiction of Missouri. The successes of this program and theevangelization work that it provides is the direct result of your supportand contributions. All of its good works and service to our Faith andOrder depends on us. Remind your members that if they have not sentin their Spring Appeal Letter contributions this would be a good timeto do so. Even if they cannot find the envelope, they can still mail acheck directly to Treasurer/Secretary Eric Bruns, 4824 Sigel Avenue,St. Louis, MO 63116. Make sure to include the council number on thecheck in order to receive credit towards your quota.

I want to thank Brother Bruns for all of the time and hard work heput into making sure everything is running smoothly and processed ontime. Special thanks to Fr. Ron Hoye for have the vision to lead theprogram into the digital realm and pushing us to keep looking for waysto streamline and improve the advertising results and increased expo-sure on the internet. Most importantly, I want to thank Cheryl andPenny for the actual hands on work and expertise at keeping up with allof the requests and shipments along with tracking all of the advertisingresults. I have truly enjoyed working with everyone on the R.I.B. teamover the last two years as Director of R.I.B. Promotions and lookforward to the challenges ahead as your new General Program Direc-tor. As we wrap up this Fraternal Year, I ask that you send in one morecontribution to the Religious Information Bureau in order to ensurecontinued success of this extremely important program. Remember toCelebrate Everything!

Well my last article for Re-spect Life as your Director. Thishas been a great two years. Many“Thanks” to all the Councils, Aux-iliaries and Assemblies who havegiven to our Meet Life program. As I have said many times this waris far from over. We have toprovide these women with theopportunity to see their babiesbefore they decide to destroy thelife. Remember our State DeputyJoe Rosenthal’s moto “Protect-ing, Saving and Changing Lives”.Our Meet Life program encom-passes his moto. We should beproud of what we have accom-plished, but there is still more todo!

I wish to say “Thank You” toJoe Rosenthal for giving me thisopportunity to serve as your Re-spect Life Director. I also need tosay “Thank You” to my team,Greg Elsey, Roses for Life Chair-man, John Clarke, Silver Roseand Marion Hour Chairman, andEd Spence, Protecting All LifeChairman. Thank you to all theDistrict Deputies, Grand Knights,

Lady Presidents, and FaithfulNavigators, who were committedto this program. It’s also impor-tant that I say “Thank You” to myfellow Directors for their supportwhen needed.

One last parting thought, whether you are a new GrandKnight, Lady President, FaithfulNavigator or you are repeatingyour term. Please consider “Life”as one of your key programs inyour Council, Auxiliary or As-sembly. Let’s face it the familyunit is in danger, and when awomen chooses abortion, she maynot realize it be she is destroying afamily unit. Our State Council hasso many wonderful programs alldirected at the Family.

As always I would like to endthis article with our PRAYER TOEND ABORTION Lord God, Ithank you today for the gift of mylife, And for the lives of all mybrothers and sisters. I know thereis nothing that destroys more lifethan abortion, yet I rejoice thatyou have conquered death by theResurrection of Your Son. I amready to do my part in endingabortion. Today I commit myselfnever to be silent, never to bepassive, and never to be forgetfulof the unborn. I commit myself tobe active in the pro-life movementand never to stop defending life.Until all my brothers and sistersare protected, and our nation onceagain becomes a nation with lib-erty and justice not just for some, but for all. Through Christ ourLord. Amen.

Summer break begins for mykids this Thursday, and for yourchildren or grandchildren certainlysoon, if not yet already. You shouldhave your summer planned, or wellunderway, and it should includeevents for Knights of Columbus“http://www.kofc.org/en/mem-bers/programs/family-activities/f a m i l y - w e e k . h t m l ” \ n_blankFamily Week.

is. Traditionally, it has been theweek that includes Fr. McGivney’sbirthday and the anniversary dateof his death, so I’d suggest thatAugust 12 – 18 is appropriate, butthe real message there is, it can beanytime your Council finds usefulin your parish or community.

As I discussed at the state con-vention, the events your Councilhas for family week should beinviting not only to your mem-bers’ families, but to all the Catho-lic families in your parish or largercommunity, so that those familiescan experience what Knights ofColumbus membership is like andwhat the Knights do for familiesin the church. Please take advan-tage of the summer to invite yourfamily prospects to grow in thefaith and to join you.
