Sir Knights,

My given name is Giro-lamo D’Angelo, but Jerry is what others have called me since I can remember seeing that no one can pronounce my given name. I am happy to be your leader for the next Colombian Year. I am sorry that I had to receive this nomination at such an awkward time. All our prayers go out to our faithful captain, Ronald Sanchez. I will try to uphold the great standards of Balboa Assembly Number 40 and carry on with all the old and new traditions to the best of my ability. A special thanks to our new Faithful Inner Sentinal SK Dominic Carlos who has volunteered to be my designated driver. Even though I have accepted this re-sponsibility, I will continue in my traditional fashion of cooking for the reception dinner to welcome our new members after their exemplification. I look forward to having a great year with many new members to join our Assembly. God Bless America, SK Girolamo “Jerry” D’AngeloFaithful Navigator, 2016-2017

Dear Sir Knights,

Back from my “Excused Absence” from my mid-century High School Reunion. Thank you all for your attendance, cooperation, and generous team work, as we served our Balboa Assem-bly this past Columbian Year. It was my pleasure to serve as your Faithful Navigator. Looking forward to seeing you again at our upcom-ing meetings, call outs, parades, and special occasions. Congratulations and wishing a great year to our newly elected Faithful Navigator Jerry D’Angelo and the new CY 2016-2017 Team.

Vivat Jesus!

Sincerely,

SK Hugh Largey, PFNFaithful Admiral 2016-2017

Dear Brothers in Christ,

This first “Captain’s Cor-ner” for the new Columbi-an Year is dedicated to our Forever-Faithful Captain, Brother Ron Sanchez, who, on June 28th, passed into Eternal Life. This beautiful text is part of the deeply poignant three-part Easter Victory Hymn many of us know, very well. Please, provide yourself a few quiet moments to reflect upon the Poet’s narrative, here, and how Christ’s Passion, Death and Resurrection, truly, is Ron’s Story ... and, truly, each of our stories. And, please, pray a fervent prayer of Thanksgiving for our Good Brother, Ron, and of intercession for the needs of his family. I look forward, greatly, to honoring Ron in my service to our blessed Balboa Assembly. In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen ... and Alleluia!

THE STRIFE IS O’ER, THE BATTLE WON[C. 12th Century - author unknown]

The strife is o’er, the battle done; The victory of life is won;The song of triumph has begun: Alleluia!

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

The powers of death have done their worst; But Christ their legions hath dispersed;Let shouts of holy joy outburst: Alleluia!

The three sad days are quickly sped;He rises glorious from the dead; All glory to our risen Head! Alleluia!

He closed the yawning gates of hell; The bars from heaven’s high portals fell;Let hymns of praise His triumphs tell! Alleluia!

Lord, by the stripes which wounded Thee,From death’s dread sting Thy servants free,That we may live, and sing to Thee: Alleluia!

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

In Support ofChristians at Risk

by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson

My column this month is based on remarks that I delivered April 28 to a conference on genocide at the United Nations headquar-ters in New York

The world’s, greatest humanitarian crisis since world war II is unfolding in the Middle east. hundreds of thousands of people in syria and Iraq have lost their lives, and entire communities have been displaced or wiped out, while neighboring communities and cultures strain to accept millions of people fleeing years of war and terrorism.

The United Nations can play a vital role by protecting the victims and refugees, by ensuring the survival of these ancient in-digenous and religious communities, by punishing the perpetrators and by support-ing the establishment of internationally agreed-upon standards of justice, equality, rule of law and religious freedom. Never has their plight been so high on the agenda of the world’s governments, the vast majority of the world’s Muslims, and all people of good will

4th Degree History

Pfc Joe Ryan, a 95 year old WWII veteran and Life Mem-ber of the KofC with SK Jarrod Belprez, age 21 from the Balboa Assembly.

Not many years after the Knights of Columbus was organized in 1882, many of the members began to urge the foundation of a higher degree. The Supreme Board of Directors approved the formation of the 4th Degree in 1899. The first exemplification of the 4th Degree was held at the Aster Hotel in New York on February 22, 1900 with a class of 1400 candidates. The degree expanded swiftly, and a separate board of governors was set up for the new degree in 1910. The chief executive officer of the 4th Degree is the Supreme Master. The 4th Degree is divided in to geographical units known as provinces, of which there are fifteen.

Ronald Sanchez was born on April 25, 1960, in San Diego, and passed away June 28, 2016, after a long battle with cancer. Ronnie lived in Poway most of his life, attend-ing St. Michaels School, and graduating from Poway High School. He attended junior college, and had a passion for learning. He is survived by his

mother, Shirley Sanchez, his brother, Rusty Sanchez, sister Cheryl Sanchez-Smith, brother in-law Gary Smith, nephew Jacob Sanchez, and nieces Jade Sanchez and Shayla Price. He was predeceased by his father, Donald F. Sanchez. Ronald was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a charter member of Our Lady of the Rosary’s Coun-cil 16175 and served as Deputy Grand Knight. During that time, Ron’s leadership was not about title or position but how he could affect the greatest good for wherever he was in life. Ronald was a 4th Degree Captain in the Knights of Co-lumbus Balboa Assembly. Brother Knight Hugh Largey had this to say, “Having had the privilege of having met, recruited and served with Sir Knight Ron Sanchez this past year, he clearly demonstrated to us all the most awesome standard of how to perform as Faithful Captain. We humbly salute him on his journey to his most deserved final promotion. Ron’s most eloquent inspiring articles contributed each month to our newsletter and have been testimony to his saintliness among us. His words in the “Captain’s Corner” found in our February Edition told us what he was made of, where he was coming from, and how he was so focused and persevering as he heroically endured multiple surger-ies with 4th cancer . . . “ I can say it isn’t always easy to remember to offer it up, but for some odd reason, it gives suffering some reasonable sense and seems to lessen the amount of suffering I was going through.” . . . “But even in our small sufferings we can save souls and do a world of good for our loved ones.”

Thank you and God Speed to you, Sir Knight Ron!

This year we had the largest turn out of knights and their families ever. The parade was led by the San Diego Chapter banner. Behind the banner there were 21 sir knights in regalia carrying the US flag and the other flags of the military and services. Fol-lowing was the Supporting our Holy Priests and One Nation Under God Banner. Then there was the Every Baby is Precious. CHOOSE LIFE banner. Then there were 3 Ford Mus-tangs donated by the Mustang Club of San Diego. They were carrying the Knights of Columbus State Deputy and other state and local dignitar-ies. To top it off there were 50 knights and their family members carrying 50 US Flags that were donated to Balboa Assembly. It created an overwhelming display of patriotism. Thanks to all that volunteered.
