Council 4497 members will again be volunteering to work with the Special Olympics’ Track and Field Events held on May 2 nd at Burgess High School. Members will begin at 7:00am helping to build the many booths that will be used to house the different activities that will be offered throughout the day. Once the booths are set up and ready, Knights will then be asked to help with running the different games, much like the carnivals we are all familiar with. Food and drinks will be offered to all who attend, and of course that will also require Knights to step in and help. Ours, along with many other Knights’ Councils play a big part in helping to make this annual activity a success. A great deal of work and time is devoted to making this event successful, but the satisfaction of having participated in such a worthwhile activity is very gratifying. The other activity our Council will be active in this month will be our family picnic scheduled for May the 17 th , right after our Corporate Communion Mass at 10 am. The menu promises to have a big verity of food for all to enjoy, from hamburgers and hot dogs to brisket and fajitas. The picnic will be held at the parish park area located adjacent to the grade school. Pro-Life Times Three

For secularists, May is the month of flowers; the month of invigoration from April’s showers; the month of new life. For Catholics, May is the month of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the mother to us all! And because of all these reasons Mother’s Day is always

proclaimed in May. Each May we Knights of Joseph I Driscoll Council 4497 link arms in support of our sister ministry, the Rosary Altar Society, in honoring Mary at their annual crowning of Mary with flowers, ceremony and rosary for life in Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto. Council members traditionally cause our own Grand Knight to join their officers and lay upon the parish outdoor altar a bouquet of flowers in behalf of our extended Knightly family. This year, the month of May will be extra special not only for our Council, but for our Brother Onorio Villanueva and his wonderfully radiant wife Liz. Look at the photo and share the joy! Thanks to them the Council may soon honestly proclaim itself one of the most pro-life Councils in Texas. Toward the end of May our Brother and Sister will cause the birth of not one, not two, but three new angels to enter and brighten our world! PRO-LIFE TIMES THREE! Onorio and Liz are both educators with one of the

El Paso independent schools. They were instrumental in ensuring the council’s success when Most Holy Trinity School held their annual Halloween fests by helping operate our game booth. Brother Onorio is a nine year veteran of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the third degree. And no, they won’t be taking care of their new gifts alone. Liz’s Mom will be there to help as long as needed - much to Onorio’s relief. Mother's Day this year is Sunday, May 10th. Would it not be wonderful if a Brother stepped forward to volunteer as the Family Activity Director and coordinated our actions in this and other family programs? He would easily answer simple questions such as should flowers be obtained for each spouse and her husband to place upon the altar; or should we sponsor a small coffee call following the event. The Grand Knight and Program Director can only do so much, but together we become stronger and capable of much more. Are you willing to show your faith by doing good works? Talk to the Grand Knight today and give him your vision of things that could be during the new fraternal year. Brother Dave BurgerBrother Dave BurgerBrother Dave BurgerBrother Dave Burger

Pentecost (Whitsunday)

Pentecost ranks among the Great Feasts of Christianity.

It commemorates not only the descent of the HOLY SPIRIT

but also the fruits and effects of that event - the

completion of the work of redemption, the fullness of

grace for the Catholic church and it's children, and the

Gifts of Faith for all nations.

After JESUS had ascended to Heaven, the Apostle's

returned to the Holy City and remained at the Cenacle

where JESUS had appeared to them previously. In the early

morning while together praying, the HOLY SPIRIT descended

to them. The descent upon the Apostle's was invisible

although accompanied by certain visible and audible

phenomena. There was a 'mighty roar' which came suddenly

from Heaven, but unlike any storm, this sound penetrated

and filled the room where the Apostle's gathered. It was

a miracle peculiar to the occasion. The second sign

consisted of tongues of fire that descended upon each one

present. These fiery tongues gave visible evidence that

the HOLY SPIRIT, had descended upon them.

At mass on Pentecost Sunday, particularly at HOLY

COMMUNION, the Power of the HOLY SPIRIT will come down

upon us. Pentecost is a Feast Day on which we commemorate

the coming of the HOLY SPIRIT and is the day upon which

the Church was founded. This is also true from a spiritual

perspective, since the SPIRIT brings the Church into

existence and enlivens it. Thus Pentecost is the 'CHURCH'S

BIRTHDAY'. Brother Jose Angel Rubio, Lecturer

democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are

willing to work and give to those who would not."

Seminarian Phillip Cong Vo Luncheon In January of this year, Council 4497 began supporting Seminarian Phillip Cong Vo. He is currently serving his pastoral

internship at Our Lady of Fatima parish in Van Horn and will be there until August. Phillip came to El Paso for a few

days to meet with Father Joe Molina and take care of some other business. While here, council members took the

opportunity to take him to lunch at the Great American Steak Burger where a great time was had by all.

Brothers George Lee & Dave Burger welcome Phillip to the luncheon as does

Brother John Bayer and GK Carlos Samaniego.

Also attending were David Babauta and his wife Gloria and Deacon Ignacio Torres.

"Boy's Town" is really a misnomer as there are children there of both sexes and all ages.

Special Olympics 2015 On May 1st, the Opening Ceremonies were held at Burgess High School. Unfortunately, there are no pictures available of the

ceremony or athletic events. Once again however, Council 4497 members were out in force to support the activities on May

2nd as shown below (L to R).

GK Carlos Samaniego and Domingo Olivas prepare "prize" bags for the booth. Angel Rubio and George Lee are "dancing" with

enthusiasm & ready for participants. Domingo looks on as a Special Olympics athlete takes aim and wins a prize.

The day ended with all the prizes being won and Carlos, Jose Holguin, Angel & George all having empty hands but full hearts with

the joy of providing a fun day for all! GOD bless you brothers!!!

Brat Sale - School Scholarship Fund Gentlemen, I would like to thank each one of you for coming out to lend a hand with our fund raiser this morning. It

is always a lot of work for all of us, but at the same time I believe we have a good opportunity to also share a few

hours together as Knights and enjoy each other's company. All our time and efforts are for a good cause, and we

should all be proud to be a KNIGHT. Net raised - $375.27. God Bless Us All... Grand Knight Carlos Samaniego

Did you know????????? Many of our Council Brothers have time they

willingly give and talents they willingly share. They

range from lending you a hand with a home repair

too big for you to handle alone; to listening to your

tales of woe and wonder; to just sitting with a

homebound loved one while you take care of an

urgent matter like a medical appointment. One of

these services is free notarization of documents. The last

time the Council offered this service was to the entire parish

as part of our Pro-Life Living Will campaign. The service is

still available to you. Every Knight and his spouse should

have a will. If you don’t you should see a lawyer and get one

as soon as possible. Even Jesus reminded us we do not

know the day or time “Our Father” will call us. In a pinch a simple

notarized will is better than nothing. That said don’t put off until tomorrow

that which should be done today. Food for thought! Meanwhile, if you have

a need let the Advocate know. He will try to work with you. Conversely, if

YOU have a talent you would like to share, please let us know. What goes

around comes around. May God bless all these men called Knights!

Are you in need of help, really in need, not something you would like others to do because

you don't want to. Maybe a light switch needs replacing or your swamp cooler set up or closed down.

The council members will try to help. If you have a need, contact JR Hernandez at 497-2136 or

747-7820, email; [email protected] and let him know your plight. JR will put the word out

and if there is a Brother capable of taking care of your project, he will contact you. You will also be

contacted if there is no one that can help. Any expense will be your responsibility. Eventually we

hope to have a list of who can do what.
