Annunciation Council 12761 / St Patrick Assembly 2883

Dear Brother Knights:

Annunciation Council of the Knights of Columbus is sponsoring a bus from Annunciation parish to the March for Life in St. Augustine on Saturday, January 12, 2019. Those making the trip will assemble at 7:30 AM at a location on the Annunciation parish campus to be determined. We will depart at 8 AM and return back to Annunciation Church at 6 PM. The travel time to St. Augustine is approximately an hour and a half. The bus is a 55 passenger bus provided by the Phoenix Bus Company, headquartered in Orlando. The bus has a PA system, passenger pull down shades, passenger seat grab handles, pas-senger seat footrests, a restroom, reclining seats, and shaded windows. Complimentary bottled water will be available on the bus. The bus will drop off the pilgrims at the starting point of the March, the Mission Nombre de Dios, at 9:30 AM, in time to enjoy the live music, information booths, and speakers. The March begins at about 10:30 AM and ends at 12:00 noon at the Plaza de la Constitiucion located across the street from the Cathedral. The March finishes with a keynote speaker. Following the keynote speaker, we will walk a few blocks to the Cathedral Parish Hall located at 259 Saint George Street and meet at 1 PM to enjoy a spaghetti and meatball dinner prepared by the First Florida Council of the Knights of Columbus. After lunch, you are free to explore St. Augustine on your own before reporting back to the bus at 4 PM. Departure for Altamonte Springs will be at 4:30 PM. Ar-rival at Annunciation parish campus will be at 6:00 PM. The cost is $20.00 per person. Dear Knights and Ladies,

As I “pen” these lines, it is a few days before Christmas. As we anticipate the Savior’s rebirth in our hearts,

we are reminded that the Infant Jesus, like all of us, gradually grew in wisdom and grace before God and man. He

did not remain an infant all his life. There was a growth process, and we too must grow in our Faith through

knowledge and service.

The month of January contains several wonderful feasts, including the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of

God, the Epiphany (the showing forth of the Savior to the world), and the Baptism of the Lord. Just as the wise men

brought the very best gifts they had to the baby Jesus, recognizing his three-fold role as priest, prophet, and king; so

we have received princely gifts at our Baptism – the seven fold gifts of the Holy Spirit. What gift or gifts did you

give to Jesus this year? As the late radio commentator Paul Harvey often observed, "Really, it's His birthday – not

ours."

We have just finished our annual exchange of gifts. All presents are given to be used and to be shared, and

this is true no less for spiritual gifts – wisdom, knowledge, understanding, counsel, piety/prayerfulness, fortitude, and

fear of the Lord.

The greatest gift we have to share with one another is Jesus, as He is recognizable to others in us. The Eu-

charist was given to us as nourishment for our life and ministry. Vatican II recognized the Lord’s universal call to

service, received at Baptism. Our life and ministries are lived in “stewardship,” defined as the worthy use of our

time, talents, and treasure, in service to God and one another. It is in developing our talents, and serving with our

gifts, that we grow in holiness.

In this New Year of grace, I ask each Knight and Lady to prayerfully consider the Lord’s call to holiness,

lived in stewardship, and the particular response you can make as individuals, as married couples, or as a family.

The Knights of Columbus are a service arm of the Church. None of us can achieve holiness alone, without God’s

grace, or without meaningful relationships. In fact, I believe our stewardship – which goes way beyond the financial

aspects – will be the measure of love that the Lord will use in our particular judgments. He may well ask: “How

have you loved? Tell me the ways.”

We as Knights have embarked upon a new year of grace. It is a wonderful opportunity for new beginnings on

a personal and Council level. If I have not made the time (and it usually has to be a priority, often sacrificial) to

serve my parish, my Council or my Assembly in some capacity, I need to act on that this year. Certainly, I need to

grow in my Faith through knowledge, reflecting upon the Scriptures and availing myself of opportunities for learn-

ing. Every day is a gift from God, and we know not the length of our days - “Memento Mori.”

With our ever growing church family, we need many liturgical ministers – lectors, hospitality ministers, Eu-

charistic ministers, for example; as well as outreach ministers – bereavement, ministers to the Sick, St. Vincent de

Paul volunteers, Faith Formation teachers, and volunteers for our annual Fall Festival. If you are retired, and can

spare an hour a week, we need ministers to the sick for homebounds, in particular. What a wonderful way to bright-

en someone’s day, and your own as well! Whatever avenue of service you choose, it will make a difference. No

gift from the heart is ever too small. As Knights and Ladies, we are a called with many gifts, and the Lord continually makes all things new. In

this New Year 2014, may we resolve to take a better path in life, responding generously to God’s call. And I cannot

emphasize enough the importance of praying for priestly and religious vocations, encouraging them

in your own families.

Pro-Life Views

January 2019

Happy New Year. May 2019 be a great year for all Brother Knights. Please take note of the following pro-life events. The March for Life is the world’s largest pro-life event. It will take place on Friday, January 18, 2019 in Washington DC. It starts at the Washington Monument and ends at the Supreme Court Building. A good place to start the day is at the Daughters of the American Revolution building where a multi-denominational prayer service will take place. Priests for Life will have Fr. Frank Pavone, Fr. Mitch Pacwa, SJ and Alveda King in attendance. Fr. Pacwa, SJ will celebrate mass before the prayer service begins. If you have not attended this event, you are missing a real treat. If you do not want to go through the time and expense of travelling to Washington there is the March for Life in St. Augustine which takes place on the weekend of January 11-12, 2019. It starts at the Great Cross and travels down A1A to the park in downtown St. Augustine. The day begins with mass celebrat-ed by Bishop Filipe Estavez at Our Lady of La Leche Church at the Great Cross. Mass starts at 9 AM and the speakers begin their talks at 10:30 AM behind the church. The Knights will have a table behind Our Lady of La Leche church where we will hand out flyers that will promote the Laps for Life event. Ryan Bomberger of the Radiance Foundation will be the main speaker and there will be a Spaghetti Dinner pre-pared by the Knights of Columbus at 259 St. George Street. Last year Bishop Noonan delighted us with his presence at this march. As always, the March will be led by the Knights of Columbus in their regalia. On March 30, 2019 the Knights will have its annual Laps for Life event at Bishop Moore High School at 3901 Edgewater Drive. The event starts at 8 AM and ends at 1 PM. The Bishop Moore band will be there as will many of the students. Students from Annunciation Catholic Academy, their families and students from other Catholic schools have also been invited. The purpose it to raise money to buy Ultrasound ma-chines for local pregnancy centers. So far, Laps for Life has raised enough money to give 20 ultrasound machines to local pregnancy centers. Supreme, through this Ultrasound Initiative, has given almost 1,000 ultrasound machines to pregnancy centers around the world. When you give to this effort please direct your donation to the Annunciation chapter of the Knights. Our local chapter will match your gift and Su-preme will match that gift. That means that if you give a gift of $25 to Laps for Life through Council 12761 that gift will be doubled to $50 and Supreme will double that gift to make your total gift $100. That’s an increase of four times. Where else can you find such giving power!! Again, Happy New Year and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the March for Life in St. Augustine and the Laps for Life event at Bishop Moore High School.

Dear Brother Knights,

Remember the song, the 12 days of Christmas. It is essentially based on the waiting period between

Christmas and Epiphany. More on that at another time. It is the day we celebrate the arrival of the 3 Kings.

While the Eastern and Orthodox rites actually celebrate on the 12th day, for Roman Catholics, the date has

been shifted to the closest Sunday and is part of the Sunday obligation. The Feast of the Epiphany of Our

Lord Jesus Christ, actually predates celebrating Christmas and is one of the oldest Christian feasts. Epiph-

any comes from a Greek verb meaning "to reveal," and all of the various events celebrated by the Feast of

the Epiphany are revelations of Christ to man. As you attend Mass that Sunday, January 6, take a mo-

ment to dwell on what Christ is revealing to you. Your brother Knights are here for you, and as we prac-

tice our faith in our life, be sure and share with each other what revelations you may have experienced.

Featured Knight of the Month - ValSykes

Val was born On March 20, 1920 in Chicago. He was the second child of

Theophelia (Weisner) and Walter Zykes. His Grandfather, Frank Weisner,

came from eastern Germany. His Grandmother, Mary Dudek, came from

western Poland. They immigrated to the United States in the late 1800's and

settled in Houston, Texas. Shorty later they moved to Chicago.

Val attended Catholic schools in the Chicago area. After graduation from

high school he was drafted into the Army in September 1941, and went thru

basic training at Camp Roberts in Salinas, California. He began his Army

training as an auto mechanic, a vehicle driver, and then was assigned to the

Military Police to guard POWs. In 1944 he was transferred to Benicia Arsenal, an am-

munition depot near San Francisco. He also spent time serving at Fort Ord in Califor-

nia, and Camp Picket in Virginia. He was discharged on Feb.12, 1945 at age of 25.

After his discharge he went to work for Admiral as a repairman. He did troubleshoot-

ing and repair on radios and record changers, and then worked as a technical writer

writing service literature on Admiral television and military TV. He attended the Ameri-

can Television Institute in the evenings and earned his Television Engineer's de-

gree. As a television engineer at Admiral he worked on development of the first TV set.

In the early 1950's while working at Admiral he repaired nearly 1,000 TV sets. Later in

his career he worked in Nuclear Engineering. He worked for Admiral until 1971.

Val was active with CB radio, amateur radio, and earned a commercial radio license.

he became interested in civil defense during the Cuban missile crisis and joined the

Hanover Park Civil Defense, and eventually became the civil defense director. He initi-

ated the long siren blast, which is used to this day, to alert citizens to the possibility of a

tornado.

After working for /admiral Val went to work for B&K where he designed test equip-

ment similar to that he had designed for Sencore. After completing designs at ///b7k he

worked at National /video, and at Aabor Laboratories where he did design work on radio

communications equipment. In 1983 he went to work for Airtronics in Elgen, Illinois

where he designed electronics test equipment and micrometers which measured very

small dimensions.

Val married his wife, Helen, on August 11, 1945. They had three children, daughters

Pat and Tina, and son Danny. Helen died if a heart attack in 2002. Val went to the

Trappist Monastery near Dubuque , Iowa with his brother, John, making a weekend re-

treat for many years.

On October 30, 2013 Val went on an Honor flight from Chicago to Washington, DC.,

where he and 89 other WWII veterans went to the World War II Memorial. Val wore his

72 year old army coat and cap.

In June of 2018 Val moved to Sanford, Florida where he lives with his daughter Patty

and her husband, Ted Turner. Val became ill and and is now a resident of Island Lake

Nursing home located next door to Brookdale on SR 434. He welcomes visitors.

Van joined the Knights of Columbus in 1952 at the age of 32 and has recently trans-

ferred into Annunciation Council.
