If the rest of the Fish Frys come out as well as the first one, (193 attended on February 20), we are on course for another banner year as a fundraiser. At this time I would like to thank Rich Scholl and all of the wonderful Knights that have put in countless hours helping to make this happen and be a tremendous success. We will be honored to have Dr. Harrington at the business meeting on March 9th. He is the principal at Bishop High School and will be telling us about the students that have been awarded the scholarship for last year. We will be giving him a check for this year’s recipients at this time also. If you could attend this meeting it would be great to have a large turnout (one): to show the Knights support this great cause, (two) this is your money so you can then see where it goes . We have available to us four wheel chairs from the Knights Wheel Chair Foundation to give away from Goleta Council 5300. I will be receiving them in April, hopefully in time for the business meeting. I will be presenting them to Msgr. Jon to be given to the needy in the St. Raphael’s community. With all of the atrocities that are happening in the world right now, I look back into the life and time of Jesus. I must ask, are we going through the same prejudice that Christ and his followers went through 2000 years ago? On Good Friday, Christ gave us his ultimate sacrifice on a cross and three days later He rose to be with our Holy Father on Easter. I ask as fellow brothers in Christ, would we make the commitment as Christian Knights, to give the ultimate sacrifice for our faith as those that are in our present time of life are making because they are Christians. By the time this Knightline comes out, we will be half way through Lent and the Fish Frys. If the rest of the Fish Frys come out as well as the first one, (193 attended on February 20), we are on course for another banner year as a fundraiser. At this time I would like to thank Rich Scholl and all of the wonderful Knights that have put in countless hours helping to make this happen and be a tremendous success. Pro-Life Report for March 2015 On Ash Wednesday, February 18th, we began another local 40 Days for Life Lenten Vigil. The location is Planned Parenthood at 518 Garden Street in Santa Barbara. The Vigil runs thru 29th March. Vigil hours are nominally 8 to 5 Monday thru Friday and 8 to noon on Saturday. Your help is urgently needed. A Belated Happy 85th Birthday on December 6

Ysaura Chawa Ramirez who is a St. Raphael Parishioner for the past 65 years celebrated her 85th birthday on December 6 with her son Fred and grandson Alex by going skydiving at Lake Elsinore. “What a very special lady to do such an awesome, adventurous and unforgettable event,” stated Mike, her instructor. The widow of PGK Ygnacio Ramirez, Jr. keeps busy doing innumerable things: Brings Holy Communion to six parishioners each Friday, Eucharistic Minister at Sunday Masses, Care Giver three times a week, and is active with the Catholic Daughters, CCD, St. Vincent de Paul, Native Daughters of Golden West 126, Eagles, Elks and Moose Lodge-Puerta Vallarta. She was Past President of the Women’s Auxiliary. Chawa and Ygnacio are proud parents of 12 children. Eight are living locally or in cities in California with sons Robert in Colorado Springs and John in Switzerland. They include: Ygnacio, Robert, John, Steve, Frank, Victor, Gilbert, Fred, Yvonne and Renee. Two boys died years ago. They are also proud of 23 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Chawa and Ygnacio were married on August 31, 1959 at St. Raphael Church. They enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, Mexico and going on three cruises, one with the Knights. Chawa’s parents, Frank and Chawa Espinoza, were proud of four daughters and four sons. They include Lupe (dec.), Cuca, Annie, Frank (dec.) John, Louie (dec.) and Henry (dec.). Birthplace was Wilmington, California were she attended elementary school and high school in Tehachapi. After high school she followed friends to Goleta/Santa Barbara as she wanted to travel and see how other people lived. One of her jobs she enjoyed was working at Coronets in Goleta. Chawa’s hobbies include crafts, gardening, bowling, roller derby, race car driver in Santa Maria and Carpinteria for three years and in the Destruction Derby at age 30. Nacho, born on Nov. 15, 1937, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He then worked for 40-years with the U.S. Postal Service and was Postmaster in Tehachapi. Nacho died on December 4, 2006 of a heart attack. He served as Grand Knight for Council 5300 in 1994-1995. He joined the Knights on December 5, 1975 and became a 4th Degree on Feb. 29, 1976. His sponsor was Walter Merrigan Jr., the first Grand Knight of Council 5300.

Chawa is her most memorable skydiving experience.

Lenten Fish Fry Dinners - Knights and parishioners came and enjoyed one of the best three-course fish dinners on Friday, February 20 in the St. Raphael Church Parish Hall. Paul Curzan, ticket seller, reported that 193 persons were served. Come and enjoy a delicious $10 dinner on each Friday in March, serving begins at 6 p.m. The kitchen crew headed by GK Jim Bradbury, Advocate Richard Scholl and Chancellor James DeLarvin were assisted by Thomas Bauer, Rafael Cardenas, Frank Donohoe, Patrick Donohoe, Mike Donovan, Dan Feeney, Bill Fuhrer, Mike McDonald, Dr. Charles Owen, Felix Sanchez, Larry Torres, and David Valle. Also Evelina Curzan, Julia Sanchez, Mirtha Donovan Cece Burich, Pat Hooser, Millie Montgomery, Elisa Panizzon, Ginna Scholl and Mary Spear helped wherever needed.

Happy 79th Birthday on March 26Bill McNamara

Bill was born on March 26, 1936 in Evanston, Illinois. Bill met Elaine Gagne at a dance in Boston in 1963 while he was pursuing graduate studies at MIT and she was working at the Jamaica Plains Veterans Hospital. They were married on June 13, 1964 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Somersworth, N.H., by Fr. Leo. K. Ryan. For their Golden Wedding Anniversary last year they celebrated with family at the Santa Barbara Mission, on Who’s Your Trolley to the Menderhall Museum in Buellton, to a winery and to other fun locations in the Santa Ynez Valley. Proud parents of William (Adria), Kirkland, WA., Cherie Connolly, (Tim), Tigard, OR., Stephanie Farris, (Bryan), North Plains, OR., and

grandchildren Madeleine and Genevieve Connolly and Hayden and Cole Farris. Bill joined the Knights of Columbus Goleta Valley Council 5300 on March 24, 1987. Sponsor was Donald Aubrey. A year later Bill became a 4th Degree, and in only his 4th year served as Grand Knight in 1990-91. He was Chancellor in l988-89, Deputy GK in l989-90 and Financial Secretary in 2000-03. Currently serves as Faithful Purser (Treasurer) of Junipero Serra Assembly. Bill & Elaine serve as Docents at the Santa Barbara Mission and very active at St. Raphael’s as Eucharistic Ministers. Bill earned his B.S. degrees in Mathematics and Aeronautical Engr. in 1959 and his M.S. in Aero. Engr. at MIT in 1961. Also earned a Doctorate in Aeronautics & Astronautical Engr. in 1966 at MIT. Bill worked for General Electric (Tempo) in Santa Barbara from 1966-1993.

Our beloved husband and father went safely home forever on February 20, 2015, he was 78. Walt is absent from the body but we know he is present with the Lord.

Walter was born February 18, 1937 in Canonsburg PA. He served

in the United States Air Force. He worked for Southern California Gas Company for 22 years in Santa Barbara CA. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Raphael’s Parish as well as an Usher. He was preceeded in death by his parents Walker and Pauline McCartney and his beloved sister Loretta Hall. He is survived by Judy McCartney his wife of 47 years, sons Michael Williams and Joshua McCartney, Daughters Paula O’Briant (Tom), and Audrey McCartney, his brother Raymond McCartney and Sister-in-Law Aretta Coffelt also his cherished grandchildren Keven, Kash, Hannah, Ashton, and Riley. Also many cousins, nieces and nephews. Walter in a word: Selflessness - this was a man that would always go the extra mile. He touched so many lives by teaching all always to do the right thing. He loved and treasured his family and was so proud of the life he and Judy built together. He cherished all the time he was able to spend with the ones he loved - nothing made him happier than being with family. He will be missed for his generosity and his devotion to his family and friends. Walt’s life was filled with love, adventure and accomplishments. His shining spirit will carry on with us forever. His impact was great.A Funeral Mass will be held, Wednesday, March 4, 2015, 10:30 am, at St. Raphael’s Church. Light refreshment following the Mass in the hall. Interment following at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 199 North Hope Avenue, Santa Barbara. Schedule kindness into your day.Rabbi Joseph Telushkin recommends literally blocking off a time period during the day when you will engage in acts of kindness: “Schedule kindness into your day, whether it means visiting one who is sick, making a call on behalf of someone who is searching for work, or conferring with a person who needs advice….if you don’t schedule in kindness (such as ‘between two and two-thirty today, I’m devoting myself to helping others’ you are likely to forget to do it.” (Jewish Wisdom, 203).

Smile at everyone you meet.Your smile may be the only nice moment in someone’s life that day. Remember that smiling is beneficial for both the recipient as well as yourself. “Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile, but sometimes your smile can be the source of your joy,” notes poet Thich Nhat Hanh.

See Christ in every person you meet.Whether your encounter with others today is pleasant, unpleasant or neutral, see each person as Jesus himself. Allow this prayer of Pierre Teilhar de Chardin be your prayer for the day: “Grant me to recognize in other men, Lord God, the radiance of your own face.”

Comfort a griever.Do what the prophet urged: “Comfort, comfort my people” (Is 40:1). We all know someone who is suffering from a loss due to death, divorce, separation, disability, layoff. Visit with a griever, offering a listening ear and gentle words of encouragement.

Read some Bible prayers.Let the Bible become your prayer book during Lent. Research the many notable prayers in Scripture and allow them to saturate your own mind and spirit. Here are some to get you started:* Hezekiah’s prayer while ill (Is 38:2-20_* Prayer to be shaped by God, the potter (Is 64:8)* Stephen’s prayer while being persecuted (Acts 7:59-60)* Paul’s prayer for spiritual growth (Eph 3:14-21)

Give to someone in need.Think of someone you know who is struggling financially ---a student, a single parent, a retiree, someone unemployed. Buy and mail them a prepaid bank card. Do this anonymously in keeping with Jesus’s teaching; “When you give…..do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret..” (Mt 6:3-4)

`Help a stranger.It’s easy to reach out and help family and friends. Do the same for someone you don’t know. One cold winter day, Laura, from Chicago, heard her front tire rupture when she drove over a board with nails. “I had no idea what to do,” she says. At the next stoplight a young man knocked on her window to say that if she pulled over, he would change the tire. “And he did, despite the bitter cold and risk of getting tire grime all over his clothing.” The woman thanked the young man, and later sent him a coffee shop gift card.

Extend compassion to all of God’s creatures.St. Basil is famous for his prayer of blessing of animals: “O God, enlarge within us the sense of fellowship with all living things, our brothers the animals to whom you gave the earth as their home.” One evening a woman saw a homeless man tie his puppy to a pole outside a grocery store and head inside. Unhappy about being left alone, the puppy began to bark. The man turned around, shouted at the small creature, and kicked it viciously. Though the woman who saw this was allergic to dogs, she followed the man inside and offered him $50 for the puppy. He accepted. She took the creature home and within two weeks, found the puppy a permanent home with a kind family.

Embrace a virtue.Adopt one of the fruits of the spirit and do your best to live it out hour by hour and day by day. The “fruit of the Spirit” is found in Galatians 5:22-23: “love, joy, peace, kindness, forbearance, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”

Do a retreat in your home.One couple set aside a Friday evening in Lent for a personal retreat in their home: “It was just the two of us. We came home from work at 6 p.m., lit candles on a table, and began with a simple prayer. Then, we read Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount, pausing at passages that especially triggered something in either one of us. We took time to reflect on them and write out our insights on those passages. Finally, we concluded with a time of silent meditation and ended with prayer. Our private retreat lasted until 9 p.m., three very worthwhile hours.”

Try to please God.Be guided by this prayer written by 17th century British clergyman Edward Lake. “Lord, as your mercies do surround us, so grant that our return of duty may abound; and let this day manifest our gratitude by doing something well-pleasing unto you.”

Create sacred space in your homeEven if you live in the tiniest of apartments, set aside prayer spaceor a prayer chair. Then, spend time in that sacred space every day.
