Students may record 14 as 1+4 instead of 10+4 because they see the numbers as digits rather than amounts. Students should use manipulatives to be able to visually recognize why the number 14 has 10 ones and 4 more ones, not just a one and a four. MISCONCEPTION:

WHAT TO DO:

1 bean and 4 beans = 5

Student says, “Ten and four more is fourteen.”
