This year’s theme is “Reformation 500” as we remember the 500th anniversary of the Reformation! The theme verse is Ephesians 2:8a, “For by grace you have been saved through faith.” Each chapel will have a different class/teacher in charge that will focus on an aspect of the reformation. Our September chapel was a kickoff for the year. Mrs. Westra, Mrs. Feenstra and Mrs. Negen along with Kindergarten and 5th grade students sang songs, had a responsive reading, and gave object lessons to introduce what the reformation is as well as introducing the first of 5 “Solas” - Solus Christus (Christ alone). The monthly themes and verses this year are the following: October: Martin Luther (Mrs. Boer/PK & Mrs. Van Maanen) November: Grace Alone (Sola Gratia) (Mr. Hartbecke/4th Grade; Mr. Ten Pas) December: Faith Alone (Sola Fide) (Mrs. Waterman/6th Grade; Mrs. Boer/PK) January: Scripture Alone (Sola Scriptura) (Mrs. Raman/3rd Grade; Mrs. Fedders/ 2nd Grade) February: John Calvin (Mrs. Davelaar/7th Grade; Mrs. Louwerse) March: Glory to God - “to the glory of God alone” (Soli Deo Gloria) (Mrs. Horstman/1st Grade; Mrs. Ten Pas) April: Reformation Today (Mr. Westra/8th Grade; Mrs. Horstman/1st Grade) To the right is a symbol that Luther designed representing his theology. Luther explained this symbol in the following way: First, there is a black cross in a heart that remains it’s natural color. This is to remind me that it is faith in the Crucified One that saves us. Anyone who believes from the heart will be justified (Romans 10:10). It is a black cross, which mortifies and causes pain, but it leaves the heart its natural color. It doesn’t destroy nature, that is to say, it does not kill us but keeps us alive, for the just shall live by faith in the Crucified One (Romans 1:17). The heart should stand in the middle of a white rose. This is to show that faith gives joy, comfort, and peaceit puts the believer into a white, joyous rose. Faith does not give peace and joy like the world gives (John 14:27). This is why the rose must be white, not red. White is the color of the spirits and angels (cf. Matthew 28:3; John 20:12). This rose should stand in a sky- blue field, symbolizing that a joyful spirit and faith is a beginning of heavenly, future joy, which begins now, but is grasped in hope, not yet fully revealed. Around the field of blue is a golden ring to symbolize that blessedness in heaven lasts forever and has no end. Heavenly blessedness is exquisite, beyond all joy and better than any possessions, just as gold is the most valuable and precious metal. (From: Letter from Martin Luther to Lazarus Spengler, July 8, 1530 [WA Br 5:445]; tr. P. T. McCain) (Taken from lutheranreformation.org) Board NotesSeptember 2016 1. Principal’s Challenge

Each year Mr. Ten Pas comes up with a unique and fun idea of something he will do that will help raise money for the auction. He has lived in a tent on the roof, rode 100 miles on a bike, been taped to the wall, drove around on a toy tractor, wore a Vikings Jersey as an avid Packer fan, etc. This year, our city slicker Principal has decided to become a cowboy! This coming Wednesday, October 4 from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM, Mr. Ten Pas can be found riding a horse around the school building and surround area. Come cheer him on and give him a “yee haw”!

Chocolate Sales The 6th-8th graders are once again selling chocolate to raise money for field trips, music, fine arts, sports, interscholastics, and other extra-curricular activities. They have milk or dark chocolate, almond, crunch or caramel bars for $1. There are boxes of caramel whirls or chocolate mints for $2. The students will be selling chocolate until October 11.

Monarch Butterflies

Sunday Ford, Sioux County Naturalist, visited the 5th grade classroom on Tuesday, August 29. She helped kick off their Science unit on insects by teaching them all about monarch butterflies. She explained the lifecycle of a butterfly and then talked to them about how monarch butterflies migrate to Mexico every winter which is over 1,600 miles away! The 5th graders’ job for the day was to try to catch monarch butterflies and tag them so they can be tracked on their way to Mexico.

Darren & Darla Van’t Hul were generous in allowing the 5th grade to explore their beautiful yard to catch the monarchs. Students found monarchs and captured/tagged a few of them. The 5th graders had a great time with Sunday Ford! They are anxiously awaiting news to find out if any monarchs they tagged are found in Mexico! Pictured on the left: JD Nielsen ready to release a monarch after being tagged.

Building Addition/Renovation Financial Update

Faculty, staff, and students are again so thankful for the opportunity to be using the addition and renovated areas of our school. Sometimes it is hard to remember how we functioned before the updates took place. We want to continue to keep you informed on the financial progress that is being made to pay for the building project. We thank the many who have and are faithfully giving to pay off the loan. If you are interested in learning more about how you can contribute to the campaign, please contact Randy Ten Pas at 712-439-2273. We value the participation of everyone! Thank you for your support in providing the best quality Christian education for our students!
