Winter Clothing Drive for the Homeless

Landstuhl had their first bit of

snow on November 21st, and we

can all smell winter in the air. For

many of us, this just means turning

up our heaters; but this isn't the

case for everyone. In light of this,

Sandra Johnson from the 86th

Force Support Squadron is putting

on a drive to collect winter clothing

for the homeless. She’s in need of

Shoes, Jackets, sweaters, pants,

long-johns,

underwear, hats, gloves, etc. This

is a DIRECT way to help the local

community. No need to send your

money or goods off to some

far-a-way place hoping it is going

to good use. If interested in

donating, contact Sandra Johnson

at DSN 480-6035.

Student Targeting and Reinforcing Skills or STARS Students meet once a week on

Wednesday @ 14:45-16:00 to receive tutoring sessions from volunteers who are

knowledgeable in a broad range of typical intermediate school topics. The tutoring

sessions start on December 4, and continue to meet on the following days:

December 4th, 11th, 18th

January 8th, 15th, 29th

February 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th

March 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th

April 2nd, 16th, 23rd, 30th

May 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th

Students will come and receive tutoring/mentoring help in all subjects. Some

subject examples are English/spelling, math, Earth science, and social studies.

There will be 3 groups of students: 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade.

Sessions will meet at Ramstein Intermediate School, and the program is in need of

volunteers to help mentor these young men and women who sacrifice so much for

their military families.

If you’re interested in volunteering, contact Monique Fees at

[email protected] .

Could you be the Next AFN Star?

Ramstein Intermediate School STARS

The PAZ section of USAFE-AFAFRICA Public

Affairs has been busy creating commercials/

spots for COMUSAFE's priority messages. We

have several more projected in the near fu-

ture. One of the delays to completing the

spots is finding actors. I'm requesting your

help in compiling a pool of volunteers that

would be willing to act in public service an-

nouncements we create for air on AFN. This

is an opportunity for your Airmen to be movie

stars. (or at least AFN stars) Would you

please look within your units and encourage

interested volunteers to provide information

requested below directly to TSgt Oneika

Banks or TSgt Jared Frey. We would like to

compile a contact list so we can speak to each

individual, assess their skills, and determine

their placement in upcoming projects. This

contact list will be used for current and future

projects as they become available. We do not

have specific dates, please advise that shoot

Airmen Helping Airmen Needs YOUR help!

This is a great opportunity for Airmen

that have been stationed here for a

reasonable amount of time and would

be willing to help new airmen just ar-

riving here at Ramstein AB. This new

organization, that’s attached to the

KMC 1st Four will be looking for people

to recruit and eventually be assigned a

new airman; you will be tasked to be

their mentors. This is similar yet differ-

ent than sponsoring someone in your

unit.

This is an opportunity to help someone with any questions, or advice that you can give

them. For example, what are good bullets toward BTZ, information about the KMCC, or any

questions regarding the military. Is this something you have knowledge on and would be

interested in helping with? If yes, please contact the KMC 1st Four Personal Development

Committee: A1C Albert Marquis, A1C Alexander Collins, or A1C Andrea Williams at

[email protected].

Special Olympic Bowling Tournament

Vogelweh Bowling Center is putting on the annual Special

Olympics Bowling Event for about 85 of their amazing athletes

on December 6th 2013 from 0730 to 1300. This is a great

event and supports the military idea of helping out your local

community.

Last year EFMP funded this event and prior to 2011 it was

funded by the Army. However, due to budget constraints,

there are no funds available and they are attempting to

continue this event on donations only. Due to this, we need

lots of volunteers and donations to make this great event

happen. Right now, the event needs volunteers during the

event, and it needs people to volunteer to be buddies for the

athletes. These people would be there to cheer on the

athletes and give them a helping hand if they need it. If you’re

interested in volunteering, donation, or cheering on the athletes, you can contact Melody

Ticebaird at [email protected] or call DSN 480-8992.

The December KMC Top 3 General Membership Meeting is December 17, 2013 at The O’Club on Ramstein. Meeting starts at 11:30; food is served at 11:00!

Do you know of someone who has overcome a personal or professional obsta-cle, someone who perhaps tackled their inner demons? Have you or a peer lost a troop to suicide or are you dealing with PTSD? Has someone experienced a personal loss of a child or colleague? As General Welsh said, "Every Airman has a story" and, in today's busy world and Air Force, seldom do we hear these stories from the source. Help us seek out these individuals that are willing to share their inspirational personal stories in a relaxed setting. The Total Force Development Council will be hosting "Storytellers;" an intimate, raw experience of real stories from our peers. The Storytellers event will be on 12 December, from 1300-1630 in the Hercules Theater. The last Storytellers event was a huge success and had an impressive turn out, let’s help these Airmen share their stories in a comfortable environment by giving them our support. If you’re interested in attending, contact SMSgt Paige Collins or MSgt Adeboyega Adeyemo, or email the [email protected] to reserve your spot.

Also, on December 10th,

female dorm residents can “Get

Connected” to each other at 1800

at Dorm 2418. This event offers

free food for female dorm

residents!

The time is rapidly approaching to kick off this year's Ring the Bell

campaign! For those unfamiliar with the Ring the Bell program, it's similar

to the Salvation Army Red Kettle program; with 100% of the proceeds going

towards Airmen families in need through Operation Warmheart. For example, some

families may receive gift cards for the commissary, enabling them to enjoy a

home-cooked meal. Last year was a huge success and with your help an

amazing $20K was raised!

The campaign will run on Saturdays and Sundays for three consecutive

weekends beginning 30 Nov and ending 15 Dec. The stations will be at the

KMCC food court entrance, KMCC barber shop entrance, and the Ramstein

Commissary. The Top 3 is organizing this, and need lots of volunteers! If you'd like to

volunteer please contact MSgt Shay Thomas at 0151-6113-2584, or MSgt Ryan

Thuyns at 0151-4140-3197. If you’re more tech-savy, you can sign up to volunteer at

General Membership Meeting

The next KMC 5/6

General Membership

Meeting is on

5 December, 2013 at

1130 at the O’Club on

Ramstein Air Base. The

talk about the changes

to Tuition Assistance for

Fiscal Year 2014, if any.

All are invited to attend!

Fisher House Helping Hands

Next General Membership Meeting will be held on 5 Dec 13, Ramstein O-Club

(Downstairs Dining room). Our guest speaker will be CMSgt Sonia Lee who will speak

with the NCOs on Air Force Special Duty Vectoring Opportunities and how this new

selection process affects NCOs. This topic falls in line with AFI 36-2618, Enlisted Force

Structure, Item 4.1.15: “Pursue opportunities and encourage subordinates to retrain

into Air Force shortage career fields and serve in special duties such as military

training and PME instructor, and recruiter, when appropriate, to balance the force,

enabling the Air Force to meet mission requirements.”

The KMC 5/6 has adopted the Landstuhl Fisher

Houses I and II as one of their Special Projects.

This is a great volunteer opportunity to help

out a wonderful organization. This donation of

your time has such a great impact on the families

and staff of the Fisher Houses and those that will

utilize the facilities in the future. This example of

selflessness reduces a lot of stress from the

shoulders of the Fisher House staff.

As volunteers we provide manning for daily up

keep of the facilities and common areas of both

Fisher Houses. This includes cleaning rooms after

guests have checked out, changing linens,

dusting, mopping and cleaning restrooms.

Volunteers would meet in the Lobby of Fisher

House II at 0845, and meet with the friendly staff

about what needs to be accomplished that day.

The cleaning tasks are usually very easy to

accomplish in under 2 hours if there are enough

volunteers! The house usually cannot

handle more than 10 people for both

houses though.

If you’re interested in volunteering, contact

Tsgt Steven McKinney at

[email protected] or 480-3718.

Decoration Writing PDS in High Demand

“Pursue Opportunities” at Next General Membership Meeting

SMSgt Steven Schoen, of the 569 USFPS delivered Decoration Writing tips and techniques to 22 NCO's on 18 Nov 13. This small group learning environment helped the NCO's to develop their Decoration writing skills from the ground up. This course started by taking a look at the recommendation process, common decorations awarded, creating the package and awarding the decoration. Due to high course demand, SMSgt Schoen has agreed to present another small group course for the NCO's on 2 Dec 13 @ 0900. Slots are filling up fast and registration can be done through TSgt Donald Schomburg, SSgt Kevin Ferguson, and SSgt Mary Martin. Contact one of the three POC’s listed to reserve your seat now!

The 1st Four BROKE the Record, Thanks to you!

On November 8th, 2013 at around 1400, people

from all over the Kaiserslautern Military

Community met up to boost morale with a

unique goal in mind. That goal was to break the

Guinness Book of World Records’ record for most

people consecutively doing push-ups for one

minute.

The previous record for this category was

352 people, achieved by Laboratorios Silanes S.A.

de C.V. (Mexico) at Bosque de Tlalpan Park in

Mexico City, Mexico, on 20 October 2012.

The event started outside at the South Side

Fitness Center Softball Fields, but as the rain

came down, the participants came inside the

gym annex. As people registered, we eventually

got over the required 352 people and continued

to get more! The rough estimate for the final

number of people was 416 people! Based off our

count, we did INDEED beat the Guinness Book of

World Records previous record.

However, the KMC 1st Four still needs to

complete an extensive amount of paperwork and

documents to guarantee to Guinness that we

have integrity and beat the record. Typically, in

the states, we would have an actual Guinness

Judge to verify the record, but since we didn’t

have one of those people, we have to have

witnesses, videos, photos, ticket stubs, and more

to prove it. Once all the paperwork is completed

and sent in, we will get the final thumbs up from

Guinness saying we hold the record! Thank you

to everyone for showing your support and

showing up! Congratulations for being a

Guinness Record Holder!

6

Jingle Bell Toy Trot 5k Needs Your Help!

The KMC 1st Four has already started the planning

process for a Jingle Bell Toy Trot 5k! This will be a

shared event with the South Side Fitness Center, and

it will be a toy raising event for Toys for Tots. The 5k

will be on December 12th at 1400, and the

registration fee will be an unwrapped gift for a child in

need.

The date is set for the event, but we still need a lot of help from volunteers. We will have a

booth set up in the KMCC advertising the event and getting people to sign up. We will plan to

have people sit there from 1100-1300 on Monday’s through Thursday’s; and on Fridays/

Saturdays we will have two shifts from 1000-1200 and 1200-1400. How much easier could it

get?! Just sit at a booth, collect gifts, and spread the word about this great 5k event.

We will also need 12-15 people for road guard and water station duty for the day of the

event. They will need to report on 12 December at 1300 for duty. The 5k event will also be

providing free hot cocoa for participants thanks to the KMC 1st Four.

If you’re interested in volunteering for this event, contact A1C Audrey Denisyeva at

Recent Legislative Updates

The AFSA Chapter 1674 on Ramstein Air Base

announced legislative updates on November 21,

2013. They’ve picked out the key points for easy

undersanding.

. First, the Senate voted to take up the 2014

National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and

immediately stalled, having only reviewed a few

of the amendments offered by the house, it is

unlikely that much progress will be made before

the congressional break for the holidays. Second,

the Air Force has released guidance on the

Survivor Benefits Plan for same-sex marriages.

Additionally, they announced some

December and January key fiscal Deadlines.

·December 13: The bipartisan House-Senate

budget conference committee presents its fiscal

recommendations.

·December 16: Congress is scheduled to begin its

holiday recess through the end of the year.

·December 31: Look for news regarding a

possible civilian pay increase around this time, or

an extension of the pay freeze, now in its third

year.

They January Key Fiscal Deadlines have also been

identified and are listed below. These are BIG

ones.

·January 1: Federal employees will get a 1

percent across-the-board pay raise, the first such

raise in three years, unless Congress blocks it.

Military members will also get a 1 percent pay

raise unless Congress completes the FY 2014

National Defense Authorization Act and

overrules the President’s desire to reduce the

military pay raise from 1.8 percent [called for by

law] to 1.0 percent.

·January 15: The current continuing resolution

funding the government expires and the

automatic cuts under sequestration take effect

for fiscal 2014 on this date, unless Congress

changes the law before then. Agencies likely will

start announcing furlough plans soon after, if the

sequester remains in place. . . DoD has said it

might have to resort to laying off civilian employ-

ees..

Amsterdam Black History Tour a Success!

11/18/2013 - 50 personnel from the

Kaiserslautern Military Community

recently participated in a cultural

excursion to Amsterdam, the capital and

most populous city of the Netherlands.

The trip took place on 2 November and

was coordinated by the

Kaiserslautern

African-American Heritage

Committee. A wide

representation of the KMC

populace took part in the

experience. Attendees were

from multiple cultural and

social backgrounds to include

local school administrators,

military members, and

dependents with ages ranging

from 5 to 45 years of age.

"The African-American Heritage

Committee is an all-inclusive organization

that welcomes all ethnicities and cultural

backgrounds”, said AAHC President Kevin

Brown. "This was a great opportunity to

provide cultural context in examining

African diaspora in the Netherlands. We

were fortunate to be in a location here in

Europe that offered this unique

experience.”

The Black Heritage Amsterdam Tour

included a three hour guided excursion,

led by Amsterdam Black Heritage Tour

owner, Jennifer Tosch, an Amsterdam

resident of Suriname descent. The tour

began with an introduction at the

National Slave Monument and included a

one hour museum tour with a walk

through of a 17th century cargo ship that

would have been outfitted to transport

slaves from West Africa in route to the

Dutch Colonies. During the ship tour,

attendees were informed on the

arrangement and living conditions of the

human “cargo” that took up to six

months to deliver from Africa to the

colonies. During this portion of the tour,

many members expressed sadness and

grief in hearing the conditions of the

slaves during

transport. “I found it really upsetting, I

was hurt, I was angry”, replied Chaunda

Wharton, when asked how the exhibit

made her feel.

After departing the ship, the group

entered the adjoining museum exhibit

located inside the National Maritime

Museum, entitled “The Dark Chapter.”

The exhibit examined the slave trade

from a maritime perspective, including

exploring a compelling story of a lost

slave ship called the Leusden. Following

the exhibit, the group boarded a canal

vessel to tour the “Hidden History” of

Amsterdam. The group was introduced to

many landmarks, such as Moors Heads on

buildings that identified various

businesses and families directly linked to

the Slave Trade. The canal tour passed

many famous landmarks of the city to

include, the Nemo museum and the

world famous Seven Bridges.

The tour concluded with the group

participating in a Libation ceremony,

ritual representing an offering in memory

of those who have died. One attendee

was inclined to share before departure,

“To be here today to witness and discover

the parallels of these people and my

ancestors was a great experience and a

testament to the triumph of the human

spirit.” 8
