Start Young and Get Ahead

Jack Guilfoyle explains why the Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment was the right choice for him:

‘I liked the fact that I could start learning real life building skills now rather than waiting until I was 16. I love the practical side of things like welding and soldering, and I really like the fact that we spend so much time on building projects. It feels like you’re really grown-up when you come here to college. It’s a small group that works as a team and I like that very much.’

Read about the 14-16 Diploma on page 12

Schools Education Centre

We offer unique educational visits for pre-school through to Key Stage 2 children to find out about healthy living, animals and the countryside. The Animal Park is perfect for close-up animal encounters with rabbits, lambs, alpacas, pigs and more. We also have large growing plots where classes can grow their own vegetables, and access to the Farm opens the world of lambing, milking and farming activities.

Key Stage 3 Taster Days

Come to college and get some specialist career information and advice before you make your Key Stage 4 choices. Your school may have already suggested that you could benefit from one of our curriculum tasters. If they haven’t, and you’d like to try a day of Blacksmithing, Floristry, Animal Care, Horse Care and more, please talk to your teacher. Sessions are arranged with Dorset schools in the summer term of Year 8 or the autumn term of Year 9. Specialists from each of our Academies are available to visit your school to offer some ‘hands-on’ sessions to tutor groups and assemblies.

‘The children had a fantastic outing and even those who went in the rain enjoyed their visit. Visiting the lambs and feeding them was a highlight and helped the children learn so much. Some of our children do not have the opportunity to visit farms, so the first-hand experiences are invaluable.’

Cheryl Graham, Playgroup Co-ordinator

Choose your Course

That’s what this prospectus is for! Look through the course descriptions to see what courses match your interests and future plans.

In Year 9 you start to make choices about what to study next. The Diploma is an alternative to the traditional GCSE route, allowing you to keep your options open. The Diploma qualification gives you the opportunity to experience a ‘hands-on’ style of learning and practical activities here at college. You will also do English, Maths and ICT back at school and many of the skills you learn at college will help strengthen your ability in the school classroom. You’ll gain the knowledge and skills that employers are looking for without committing yourself to a career within a particular area. We currently offer three 14-16 Diplomas:

Construction and the Built EnvironmentAvailable for Central Dorset Partnership schools.

Environment and Land-based StudiesAvailable to all school students in Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole.

Business, Administration and FinanceAvailable for Central Dorset Partnership schools.

What Would I Study in my Diploma? You’ll cover a range of compulsory subjects. For example, areas you will study on the Environment and Land-based Studies Diploma include:● Environmental sciences

● Management and care of animals● How we use the land to produce food.

You can also select a number of optional specialist courses. For example, if you decide to take the Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment, you could take a more specialist course in Surveying or Community Regeneration. The Diploma was developed with the help of employers, and over 5000 businesses in the UK are involved. You’ll get the chance to spend time working with an employer to develop your skills in the real world.

What Qualification Would I Get? There are three levels of Diploma. Foundation is similar to achieving 5 GCSEs (with one grade at D or below). The Higher is the equivalent of 7 GCSEs (grades A*-C). The Advanced has the same number of UCAS points as 3½ A Levels. Listing it on a university application will show that you have the knowledge and skills needed for higher education.

For more information on all these options, please contact the 14-19 Team on 01305 215005. You can also visit www.direct.gov.uk/diplomas

‘Some of my friends had gone to KMC in the past, which is why I chose the animal management course. It was more practical and suited me more than A levels, plus animals interest me. I enjoyed working with the exotic animals and Mark, my tutor, was brilliant. We also went away on a study tour, which I really enjoyed. In the future I would maybe like to have my own business in something animal-related, but I’m not sure yet. I’m enjoying my current job at Southfields working with the small animal team.’

‘My course was challenging but enjoyable. I particularly liked the Equestrian Teaching and Event Management units. I am good with figures and found that I could use this to quickly work out jumping distances and add up dressage scores.

‘During my final month at the college, I filled a vacancy for an Apprentice in the Equine Department. This went well and I have now made the transition from student to staff member and I now care for horses at the college stables as well as helping the Event Secretary.’

After my third child I decided to enrol on the course at Kingston Maurward. It was great, everyone got on well, and the tutors were really interesting. They encouraged us to develop our own personal style; it’s nice to be able to express yourself in that way. I now own a florists in Dorchester, so the course has been a great way to learn the skills I need. I’m also hoping to take a further course in floristry to learn even more’.

‘I used to work as a duty manager in a hotel, but after working 80-hour weeks, weekends and holidays I couldn’t imagine doing it for the rest of my life. Horticulture interested me, so I chose Kingston Maurward.

‘I enjoy the practical side of things, using machinery and building. The tutors are good too, they don’t treat you like kids; you get the work done but still have a laugh and they have been in the industry so they tell you their stories. I’m going to go on to study Arboriculture, as that also interests me. Eventually I would like to run my own business or get a job with the council.’

Would you like to work in the open air, enhancing the beauty of the environment? Horticulture is a true growth industry with a national shortage of qualified and experienced staff. There are exciting career opportunities within horticulture, which could see you become a landscape designer, run a garden centre or manage sports turf, and that’s to name just a few. There is no age barrier to learning about horticulture - many of our students are mature learners or career changers.

Research shows that Apprentices earn, on average, £100,000 more throughout their life than other employees. Apprenticeships can take between one and three years to complete – you work at a pace to suit you and your employer. Although you don’t need any formal qualification to start an Apprenticeship, don’t be fooled into thinking they are the easy option: the programme can be demanding – but also very rewarding.

Open to young people aged between 16-24, an Apprenticeship means you can earn while you learn. You can combine hands-on experience in your chosen industry and get paid whilst you’re doing it. Whether you are looking for a job that enables you to carry on learning skills, or you are already in employment and want to gain a further qualification, an Apprenticeship could be the option for you.

As an apprentice, you will spend most of your week out in the workplace, developing your practical skills. You’ll also spend time here at the college with our dedicated work-based learning team, understanding the theory and technical skills employers need. As an apprentice you will earn a wage from your employer.

Apprenticeships include the following:● An appropriate work-based learning qualification at Level 2 or 3● Key Skills qualifications ● A technical qualification such as a BTEC or City and Guilds● Other qualifications required by your chosen industry.

Apprenticeships have been developed in partnership with major employers, and some examples of businesses where we have successful apprentices include:● Dorset County Council● The Body Shop● Farmer Palmer’s● Southern Aquatics● Margaret Green Foundation Trust.

Sources of Financial Help

Learner Support Fund

The college can help both full- and part-time further education students (following a course of at least 12 guided learning hours per week) with essential course related costs, childcare (learners aged 20 or over) and financial hardship and emergencies. All applications are considered on an individual basis by an independent panel and are subject to you meeting certain conditions.

EMA (Education Maintenance Allowance) If you are under 19 when you start your full-time course at college, you could get up to £30 a week to help you carry on learning. EMA spells fewer money worries – leaving you to get on with your studies. EMA is paid weekly into your bank account - but only if you attend your classes and really put in the effort. EMA is a government scheme and your parents need to meet certain criteria. Application forms are available from Student Support, or at http://ema.direct.gov.uk

The college reserves the right, by giving notice to the student at any time before the start of their course, to increase the course fee to reflect any cost increase that is beyond our control. This could include any significant increase in the operating costs or materials, or failure by the student to provide accurate information.

ALG (Adult Learning Grant )Missed out on EMA because you are over 19? Then an Adult Learning Grant could be the answer. Money is paid directly into your bank account but you must be studying for your first Level 2 or Level 3 course. You’ll receive up to £30 per week, depending on your circumstances. There is no upper age limit on taking a Level 2 qualification but the age limit for a Level 3 is 31. Application forms are available from Student Support.

Career Development and Student Loans These Government-sponsored loans can be used to help with living and other expenses while you study at college. They are repayable after you complete your course. Visit www.direct.gov.uk for more information on Career Development Loans and www.slc.co.uk for further details on student loans for higher education.

Local Authorities and Charities Your Local Authority may be able to help with tuition fees and other costs for both further and higher education and some charities provide support grants. Visit www.dorsetforyou.com to find your Local Authority or contact Student Support for a list of potential charities.

Rural Business Are you employed in agriculture or a rural business providing professional services to agriculture? Then you may qualify for a 75 per cent reduction in tuition fees for certain courses that develop your expertise and update your knowledge. Programmes are held at venues across Dorset and can cover finance, technical and husbandry issues, diversification and planning. Please contact us for further details.

Government funding for 19+ learners has been steadily reduced and there is an assumption that for 2010/11, 19+ learners (not entitled to fee remission) should be charged 50 per cent of the cost of their course. This would mean that for most full-time courses, a student would be charged £1,366. However, Kingston Maurward College has taken the decision to keep the price of all full-time courses for 19+ students at just £499!

Course Information Sessions and Open DaysKingston Maurward College holds regular Course Information Sessions, where you can come along, meet the course tutors and learn more about the course that interests you, and about college life in general. Visit www.kmc.ac.uk for details.

We also hold an annual Open Day, including course demonstrations, college information, displays and fun activities.

Our 2010 Open Day is on Sunday June 13, from 10am to 8pm.

For 2010 / 11, many of the well known national qualifications such as National Diplomas and National Certificates have changed.

Vocational qualifications on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) are new, work-related qualifications. They are designed to allow you to learn in a way that suits you, and give you the skills that employers are looking for.

They are made up of units, so you can study at a pace that suits you. Over time, you can combine units in different ways to make up a full qualification.

There are three different sizes of qualification, worth different numbers of credits. Larger qualifications will take longer to complete than smaller ones.

AwardAn Award is the smallest type of qualification. It is worth between one and 12 credits. This means it takes between 10 and 120 hours to complete.

CertificateA Certificate is worth between 13 and 36 credits. It takes between 130 and 360 hours to complete.

DiplomaA Diploma is worth 37 credits or more, so takes at least 370 hours to complete.

The chart below aims to show you the different levels of qualifications, and where these new qualifications (in bold) fit. Courses may be subject to change.

For detailed information, visit www.qcda.gov.uk or come along to one of our course information sessions (visitwww.kmc.ac.uk for dates and times) to discuss your particular needs or talk to your school or Connexions advisor.
