LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends and Members of the KMA Community,

I am delighted to share the news of our past year, which has indeed been an exciting turning point as we welcomed our new Executive Director, Darsie Alexander. To say the Board and I are excited about this choice is a great understatement. Darsie has built an esteemed career as a curator and left the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis) as its Chief Curator to move to Katonah and head the Museum. Darsie is known for bringing interactivity and dynamism to exhibitions, and the first originated by her for the KMA will be no exception. Choosing to work with contemporary artist Chris Larson, who uses the 25th anniversary of the Edward Larrabee Barnes-designed Museum and Katonah history as a catalyst, is a fantastic idea and brilliant way to bridge past and present.

Over the last year the Museum presented its characteristic expansive range of exhibitions beginning with Remix: Selections from the International Collage Center, which stretched many people’s conceptions of this flexible medium. Eye to I… 3,000 Years of Portraits, on view from October through February, was extraordinarily popular and hosted more school tours than any other exhibition in the Museum’s history. The more than 60 portraits, primarily from private collections in the area, had seldom been shown to the public. The final exhibition of the year, Jasper Johns & John Lund: Masters in the Print Studio, brought to light the little-known story of Johns’ 30-year relationship with master printer John Lund.

Education programs continue to break ground and offer the very best for young children and students in connecting art to holistic learning. Thinking Through Art uses art in the galleries as a bridge to writing and visual literacy. It is a genuinely moving experience to see students read their poems associated with the art on view at the final session. These young participants are rightfully proud, and it is evident they have explored new territory. ArteJuntos/ArtTogether, an innovative bilingual program for immigrant families with young children, continues to flourish and gain support from prominent foundations such as the National Endowment for the Arts. So successful is this model that other museums plan to adopt it. In fact, KMA educators will soon travel to the El Paso Museum of Art to train museum staff there on how to implement the program.

Thank you to all of our members and donors who enable this outstanding cultural institution to thrive and add depth to the community. We would be poorer without it. Many thanks are also due to the dedicated KMA staff and board members for maneuvering a time of transition with aplomb and good will.

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Greetings to the KMA Family!

I am pleased to submit our FY 2013-2014 report to you as we embark on a promising chapter in the Museum’s history. I want to say first and foremost that I have received a tremendously warm welcome to the Katonah Museum of Art—both by members of the Museum community and local residents. This was a big move, both for the KMA and for a family relocating from the Twin Cities, but the open-hearted reception we have felt has been extraordinary. I have been struck, time and again, by the dedication I sense from everyone involved with the Museum. This commitment has been so instrumental to the KMA’s success that I know it will remain integral to its identity and future achievements.

Since I began as Executive Director on March 1, 2014, we hosted our annual Young Artists exhibition, and the enthusiasm of the students made for a joyful opening event. In June, Christo was awarded the Museum’s Himmel Award, which recognizes one artist, scholar, or educator who demonstrates an ability to incite and provoke new thinking in the arts. Who better to honor than Christo and Jeanne Claude, whose epic and provocative installations have redefined public art. Our Diamond Jubilee celebrating 60 years of the Katonah Museum of Art was a smashing success and crowning accomplishment enabling us to close the fiscal year with a bang—our optimistic goal of raising $225,000 was exceeded!

In the months ahead you may notice our campus enlivened by art in many forms. Those who attended the October 11 opening of Lethal Beauty: Samurai Weapons and Armor and Antique Kimono from the Alexander Collection witnessed Ushio Shinohara creating one of his famous boxing paintings—only the fourth ever created in the U.S. Sound artist and composer Stephan Moore has been commissioned to create an installation designed for the vestibule between the Museum entrance and atrium that will animate the entryway with a lively sonic presence. In ways both large and small, we are experimenting with how the Museum looks and feels, and the ways in which art can permeate other aspects of the experience, for our valued visitors most of all. We look forward to sharing the results of these efforts, and many more, in the coming year.
