USS Flier “Looking for Walter Joseph Klock”

On August 13, 1944 while in shallow water off South China Sea, the USS Flier struck a mine and sank. Fourteen of 86 crewmen escaped, but only eight survived the long swim to reach shore. Among the dead, Chief Radioman Walter Joseph Klock.

In last month’s issue of Klock Connections there was an article entitled, “Looking for Walter Joseph Klock”. I had received an email from Vickie Rogers who is a volunteer with the USS Flier Project. Vickie is trying to find the families of lost sailors for a web site. The primary purpose of this site is to honor the men of the U.S. Submarine Force by attempting to put faces to as many of the names on the lists of lost submariners as possible.

I wanted to see if I could help Vickie find the family of Walter Joseph KIock and maybe a

“My father's (Robert) story during WWII is amazing as well,” Bob told me in his emails. His father flew night fighters off carriers in the Pacific, won the DFC, (Distinguished Flying Cross). “He was an ace, shot down three times and drifted at sea in a rubber raft for three days one time before being rescued.” Bob told me in his email. Tracing the line of Walter and Robert Klock we

find they were the sons of Walter Manley Klock (William, Oswin, Charles, John Jacob, and Johan Peter Klock) and Violet Rose. Johan Peter Klock was born January 01, 1742/43 in Wurttemburg Region, Germany. He married Margaretha Truckenmiller. John Peter Klock served as a Pvt. in the Continental Army during the American Revolution.

After Sheldon and Katherine were divorced, “Katherine then married Vern Kowalke on June 13, 1942,” Lillian told me in her emails. They had 2 sons, Vern and Peter Kowalke.

Sheldon C. Klock was the son of Frederick Klock and Lilian May Lyon. Frederick during World War I was a major in charge of motor transport at Camp Mende, Md. After the war he went to Chicago and worked for a while for the North Shore railroad. He then entered the employ of the Sinclair Refining company in charge of their motor fleets. Later he was maintenance superintendent of the eastern division of the Yellow Coach Lines which he held until he retired and moved back to St. Johnsville and resided with his step mother until his death in 1934 at the age of 53.

Frederick Klock and his father Sheldon E. were member of the Masonic order. Sheldon E. was born August 02, 1849 and died December 20, 1929. His parents were Jonas and Mary Klock (cousins), the male line running to Johannes through Jacob L. Klock and John J. Klock. On his mother's side the line runs through Jacob J. Klock to Jacob I. Klock, Sr. to Johannes.

Sheldon E. and Grandson Sheldon E., his wife, Myra and Frederick are

buried in St. Johnsville, New York.

Thanks Lillian for sending the pictures and information on your family and for your wonderful comments about the newsletter and the web page.

I just updated the genealogy on the web page and Joyce, the web master has given the web

page a face lift. This update added four or five hundred more pages to the Klock Family tree. I will not be updating again for a while, but when I do, your Grandmother, will not be listed as UNKNOWN. Also Issue 1 through 95 of Klock Connections is now on the web as well as a lot of other Klock Family Information.
