PRINCIPAL’S NOTE It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words as prologue to our in-house E-magazine “YOUTH UVAACHA 2015” exclusively meant for remarkable writing talent. I congratulate all of you in this occasion. All efforts will be geared to thank my superiors for their abundant blessings in guiding the institution. It is a matter of great pride that the college has made consistent progress, year on year, in academic and co-curricular activities. Today empowerment of students through education means much more than merely acquiring knowledge. I’m proud of being the Principal of such a wonderful institution, dedicated to the causes of better India. Creating better human beings is our motto and “Service to mankind is service to God”.

EDITOR’S MESSAGE

Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. So, love the people who treat you right and forget about the ones who don’t. Believe that everything happens for a reason. If you get a chance – Take it. If it changes your life – Let it. Nobody said that it would be easy. They just promised it would be worth it.

LET US HOPE FOR A BEAUTIFUL TOMORROW War and peace are the distinctive incarnations through which nature reveals itself. They are ubiquitous and universal.

So whenever you lift your brows and see distant woods, the milky falls and the characteristic forest sounds you find yourself at peace. A perfect world and all things in harmony almost slumbers you and takes you in the wild imagination where there are no rules but those of survival.

In the middle of this perfect rendezvous you are suddenly waken up and realize the threat the presence and attack of the others, the hunters and the hunted. In our own little world, a civilized one, we are not running far from the reality.

The hunters are there, the hunted are there and it’s only the rules that seems to be changed a bit. Territorial disputes are inevitable and in the very nature of mankind. They have been there and they will be there. Their presence may be felt everywhere in faiths, in epics, in myths and written with the red ink on the many chapters of history. The best we can do is strike a balance and hold as long as we can.

Hundreds of years ago, small tribes and communities fought for land and a resource, as for a given time they are limited and man is too dependent on them. There have been battles, wars, conflicts, massacres, liberations, the chapters of history all written with plethora of accounts of this unavoidable human tendency. The manifestations may though have taken a different course but the kind behind the form has always remained the same.

Page 7: KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalorekledentalbengaluru.com/pdf/A1.pdf2!! KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalore Principal: Dr. Srivatsa G Vice-Principal: Dr. Sudhir Patil

7

This emergence for both humans and species at the higher organisational hierarchy must have been driven by the necessity and the need to survive as a group. The co-existence of the individuals of the same species, so far reason can reveal, must have been an advantage.

The kind as such has been retained, though the form may hoodwink for a while. And the same is true for one more community, an institution intricately woven by man the state.

Military alliances, League of Nations, United Nations will collapse and new ones will come into existence.

Let us hope for a beautiful tomorrow and participate in a cause that establishes harmony and good order. For tomorrow the dawn may announce one more war, let us live for this night.

Friendship – what it means to me...

I built a temple of friendship in my heart

This is waiting for my Angel in the dark

My heart is empty without my Angel

But it’s full of her memories

I’m praying day and night with a wish that my Angel will step into my heart

By washing out the darkness and filling it with happiness

Sometimes I feel happy that my angel is coming towards me

But unfortunately, she passed by me towards others

And what I failed to realize was

She is moving in other’s way but not mine

What happiness I felt before was just the breeze of her way

Then I thought once

If really my Angel stepped into my heart...

Oh my GOD..!!!

I would have been on cloud nine...

So many Angels are coming towards me

But I am unable to open the door of my heart for others

Page 9: KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalorekledentalbengaluru.com/pdf/A1.pdf2!! KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalore Principal: Dr. Srivatsa G Vice-Principal: Dr. Sudhir Patil

9

Other than my sweet Angel

They are all surrounding my heart

But they are not inside

Because only my Angel can step into my heart

I know all these are just my dreams...

My dreams... and only my dreams...

This might not become true... never and ever...

But one thing... though I know the real fact about my Angel

I still go on loving her forever

Till my last breath

Until then the door of my heart will be kept opened only for you.

None other than “MY ANGEL”...

PUZZLE : 1. ( ) + ( ) + ( ) + ( ) + ( ) = 30

This is what you have for equation. The following are the numbers that you can use to fill in the brackets: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15 You can repeat the numbers if required. The resulting sum should be 30. This question appeared in the UPSC final examination in December 2013. Out of all the people who appeared, only one guy was able to solve this namely Gaurav Agarwal. Can you solve it?

Solution: There is no mention if you can use sign or not and thus the only possible way to get this is as follows: (15 - 9) + (13 - 7) + (7 - 1) + (9 - 1) + (13 - 9) If you solve inside the brackets, you will get the following equation 6 + 6 + 6 + 8 + 4 Adding all these numbers, you will get 30 which is the required sum.

2. Rohan was in an interview. The interviewer told his that this was his last question and then he asked him to point at the exact center of the table on which his resume was kept. He gave an answer after which he was selected. Can you think of what happened inside the interview room?

Solution: Rohan kept his finger in the center of the table (not the exact center). The interviewer asked him how he was so sure that this was the exact center. He told the interviewer that according to the interviewer, his last question had already been asked. The interviewer was impressed by his quick witted brain and he was offered the job. 3. Birbal is a witty trader who trade of a mystical fruit grown

far in north. He travels from one place to another with three sacks which can hold 30 fruits each. None of the sack can hold more than 30 fruits. On his way, he has to pass through thirty check points and at each check point, he has to give one fruit for each sack to the authorities. How many mystical fruits remain after he goes through all the thirty check points?

Solution: 25 Fruits

Page 14: KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalorekledentalbengaluru.com/pdf/A1.pdf2!! KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalore Principal: Dr. Srivatsa G Vice-Principal: Dr. Sudhir Patil

14

Remember we told you that Birbal is a witty trader. So his sole motive is to get rid of the sacks as fast as he can. For the first sack: He must be able to fill fruits from one sack to other two sacks. Assume that he is able to do that after M check points. Now to find M, (Space in first sack) M + (Space in second sack) M = (Remaining fruits in Third Sack) 30 – M M = 10 Thus after 10 checkpoints, Birbal will be left with only 2 sacks containing 30 fruits each. Now he must get rid of the second sack. For that, he must fill the fruits from second sack to the first sack. Assume that he manages to do that after N checkpoints. (Space in First Sack) N = (Remaining fruits in second sack) 30 – N N = 15 Thus after he has crossed 25 checkpoints, he will be left be one sack with 30 fruits in it. He has to pass five more checkpoints where he will have to give five fruits and he will be left with twenty five fruits once he has crossed all thirty check points.

4. I purchases perfume from a store and gave him a thousand rupee note. The perfume cost Rs.300. Since the store person have no change, he gets the change from next shop and return me 800 rupees. After a while, the next shopkeeper comes and told the 1st shopkeeper that the note is a fraud and takes his money back. How much loss does the 1st shopkeeper have to bear ?

Solution: Rupees 1000

5. Assuming i have an infinite supply of coins. What is the fewest number of coins would be required in order to make sure each and every coin touched exactly three other coins.

Solution: Four three placed flat on the table in a triangle(touching each other) and put the fourth one on top of them in the middle.

6. How can a man go eight days without sleep?

Solution: He can sleeps at night :-)

7. If in a cricket one day match, there were no wide balls, no wides, no extras and no overthrows. What is the maximum number of runs that a batsman can score in an ideal case scenario?

Solution:

1653 Explanation: For an ideal case, the batsman will hit a six on each ball. But if he hits six on the last ball of the over, the strike will change in the next over. Thus, the best he can do in the last ball is run 3 runs so that he retains the strike even in the next over. Thus the total runs that he can score in each over: 6 * 5 + 3 = 33 But this will have to go like it only till the 49th over. In the last over, he can hit a six in the last ball as well as that will be the last ball of the match. Thus runs for the last over will be 6 * 6 = 36. Hence the maximum runs = 33 * 49 + 36 = 1653

17

8. Using eight eights and addition only, can you make 1000?

Solution: 888+ 88 + 8 + 8 = 1000

9. In front of you, there are 9 coins. They all look absolutely

identical, but one of the coins is fake. However, you know that the fake coin is lighter than the rest, and in front of you is a balance scale. What is the least number of weightings you can use to find the counterfeit coin?

Solution: The answer is 2. First, divide the coins into 3 equal piles. Place a pile on each side of the scale, leaving the remaining pile of 3 coins off the scale. If the scale does not tip, you know that the 6 coins on the scale are legitimate, and the counterfeit is in the pile in front of you. If the scale does tip, you know the counterfeit is in the pile on the side of the scale that raised up. Either way, put the 6 legitimate coins aside. Having only 3 coins left, put a coin on each side of the scale, leaving the third in front of you. The same process of elimination will find the counterfeit coin.

10. Four people need to cross a dark river at night. * They have only one torch and the river is too risky to cross without the torch. * If all people cross simultaneously then torch light won’t be sufficient. * Speed of each person of crossing the river is different. Cross time for each person is 1 min, 2 minutes, 7 minutes and 10 minutes. What is the shortest time needed for all four of them to cross the river?

Solution: 17 min The initial solution most people will think of is to use the fastest person as an usher to guide everyone across. How long would that take? 10 + 1 + 7 + 1 + 2 = 21 minutes. Is that it? No. That would make this question too simple even as a warm up question. Let's brainstorm a little further. To reduce the amount of time, we should find a way for 10 and 7 to go together. If they cross together, then we need one of them to come back to get the others. That would not be ideal. How do we get around that? Maybe we can have 1 waiting on the other side to bring the torch back. Ahaa, we are getting closer. The fastest way to get 1 across and be back is to use 2 to usher 1 across. So let's put all this together. 1 and 2 go cross 2 comes back

Page 19: KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalorekledentalbengaluru.com/pdf/A1.pdf2!! KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalore Principal: Dr. Srivatsa G Vice-Principal: Dr. Sudhir Patil

19

7 and 10 go across 1 comes back 1 and 2 go across (done) Total time = 2 + 2 + 10 + 1 + 2 = 17 minutes ILLUSION

This is one of the simple physiological illusions. You can clearly see the checkers converging just right of the middle. Probably you can also feel like the two different planes are rolling down at that point. However, that is not true and this is only what you are perceiving. The reason behind this is the difference in the width of the checkers that is decreasing as they reach that point. It makes us think like they are ultimately falling down or rolling down at that point.

ANIMALWORLD

• All mammals except man and monkey are colour-blind. • A zebra has white stripes not black ones. • ‘Sea urchin’ walks on the end of its teeth. • Turtles have no teeth. • The backbone of a camel is perfectly straight. • The elephant is the only animal with four knees. • The great white shark is the only creature living in the

sea that has no natural enemies. Even killer whales avoid it.

• Cows do not have upper front teeth. • The star fish has an eye on the end of each arm. • The largest eggs are laid by shark.

COLUMBIA DISASTER CHAWLA, OTHERS HAD ONLY 41 SECONDS TO RESPOND.

India-born Kalpana Chawla and six other astronauts of the ill-fated shuttle Columbia, who perished in one of the worst US Space mishaps in 2003, had just 41 seconds of consciousness to respond to the impending disaster, according to a NASA report.

Narrating Columbia’s final moments on February 1, the report said the astronauts were unaware that their re-entry was compromised.

The Columbia crew’s first warning of trouble was a cabin alarm seconds earlier that signalled a problem with the shuttle’s control jets. The astronauts had just 41 seconds of consciousness to respond. In a vain attempt to get the spaceship back on course, William McCool, the pilot, pushed several buttons on a control panel and tried to restart systems

Page 22: KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalorekledentalbengaluru.com/pdf/A1.pdf2!! KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalore Principal: Dr. Srivatsa G Vice-Principal: Dr. Sudhir Patil

22

as the vessel, with its heat-shield shattered, violently spun, pitched and rolled some 2,00,000 feet above Texas, a little north of Dallas. The compartment housing the astronauts broke apart over a 24-second period as it plummeted to

1, 05,000 feet.

Things happened so fast that none of the crew was able to close the visor of his/her helmet – one astronaut was not even wearing one, the report said.

They succumbed to violent trauma as the crew compartment snapped away from the shuttle’s body, and the life-sustaining oxygen inside rushed out through small but growing breaches in the walls above and below them. The violence inside the fractured ship tore the astronauts from their seat belts and slammed their heads around in their helmets with a lethal force.

Page 23: KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalorekledentalbengaluru.com/pdf/A1.pdf2!! KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalore Principal: Dr. Srivatsa G Vice-Principal: Dr. Sudhir Patil

23

The air escaped so rapidly that the astronauts were unable to close the helmets in time to remain conscious, Houston Chronicle reported.

The crew performed courageously, trying to problem-solve their way to safety. But the accident was not survivable, NASA’s Spacecraft Crew Survival Investigate Team said.

Apart from Chawla and McColl, Columbia’s crew members were Rick Husband, Mike Anderson, David Brown, Laurel Clark and Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon.

SMILE

A smile cost nothing. but creates much; it enriches those who receive it , without impoverishing those who give it; It happens in a flash and the memory of it may last forever; none are so rich that they can get along without it . And none are so poor that they can to be richer from its benefits. In the course of the day some of your acquaintance may be tired to give you a smile, give you a smile, give them one of yours. Nobody needs a smile so much as those who have none left to give!!

THE OBJECTS ORBITING THE EARTH

• What is space junk and where does it come from?

There are millions of pieces of rubbish orbiting Earth, from defunct satellites, launch vehicles and rocket stages to nuts and bolts and even flecks of paint. In 2007 the crew of the International Space Station (ISS) jettisoned a fridge-size tank containing ammonia that was part of cooling system.

• How much is out there? There are roughly 18,000 pieces of manmade debris at least 10cm in size orbiting Earth. NASA believes that there are more than 200,000 objects between 1cm and 10cm and tens of millions smaller than that. The debris orbits the Earth at up to 25,000mph. Orbital debris is considered biggest threat to a space shuttle.

28

• How common are collisions? There have been four collisions, but they involved parts of spent rockets or small satellites and were considered minor. The collision between an Iridium commercial satellite and a Russian satellite launched in 1993 and believed to be non-functioning was the first high-speed impact between two intact spacecraft. NASA expects more such events. Deepika O

BE MY FRIEND ALWAYS...

Whether there is any medicine

To cure the wound in my heart

My heart is wailing, weeping hard

As the voice of her cry

Echoes through my half sicken body

Lamentation from the heart flows through the blood

Reaches my eyes and flushes out as tears

Ay, they reach my hands too

And make me write a melancholic song

Yes, this is the sorrow of separation

Sorrow of separation after a great union

Burdening my heart as it can

Page 30: KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalorekledentalbengaluru.com/pdf/A1.pdf2!! KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalore Principal: Dr. Srivatsa G Vice-Principal: Dr. Sudhir Patil

30

As “YOU” made feelings the essence of life

Without which life is just a hollow vessel

Oh, my heart has wept so much

As it looks no more reddish, but too pale

Me, the awardee of a great friendship

Weeps lonely in the midst of strange images

Images of sorrow, cruelty, impatience and death

The horrid images that make me tremble in haste

Let my heart stop beating

And the hanging horrid images be still

Pluck the heart from the body, the honest slave of feeling

Save me from my cursed thought of dearness

Dark clouds assembling in the sky

Who is giving the sign of a devastating flood

Let the flood out break and my cursed thoughts

Kill itself by drowning into it

I raised my eyes and noticed

The little drops of tears in my lashes sparkling brilliantly

Rubbing my eyes, I again look into the sky

To my surprise dark clouds move apart

31

And a ray of light lashed on me

It pierced my chest and reached my heart

Healing the deep wounds in it

I realized it as the ray of kindness and hope

A great gift that dashed from the “ALMIGHTY”

To pull me away from my burned thoughts

To fill me in happiness up to the brim

I am happy now, happier in future

If and only if the ray dwells in me

So I always pray you – “Be my friend always”

ROWING DOWN THE ROARING RIVER

Adventure: Dandeli has become the Mecca of river-rafting in Southern India, where nature takes tourists on a wild ride along Kali River.

Rafting is one of the least intrusive means of eco-tourism, with minimum damage to ecology, besides providing a source of income to localites. We thought of trying out this adrenaline-pumping activity and reached Dandeli.

Kali Camp has become symbolic for the thrill and excitement of rafting. It was a short ride from Dandeli through some beautiful patches of bamboo forest, most of which had flowered and were in various stages of decay.

EXCITEMENT: Soon, all rural life faded into the landscape and the forest covered the stretch, as far as we could see. It was a drive worth it and after a few minutes, we could see people waiting for us in their rafting gear. We got down and saw the river flowing to the brim.

The tension was palpable. The setting was dramatic and while the 15 of us were keen on having fun over the next two hours, we all knew that this adventure is fraught with danger. But every time the guides reassured us and our fears dissipated a little. A drill was undertaken, disclaimers signed, and life jackets and helmets distributed. The list of dos and don’ts were again reiterated and finally we were on the raft!

Page 36: KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalorekledentalbengaluru.com/pdf/A1.pdf2!! KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalore Principal: Dr. Srivatsa G Vice-Principal: Dr. Sudhir Patil

36

It was a funny boat, soft to touch, yet very rugged and able to withstand direct onslaughts of big rocks; it offered a comfortable seating to the rafter and I found myself sitting next to the guide Mr Khim who had a commanding presence that immediately reassured us. He told us that we were jumping into teamwork, with the group being responsible for each other’s safety. He checked again for the health status of each member and carefully allotted the seat to all participants. He barked the drill on how to manoeuvre, sit, and go, forward and so on.

We took off and within a few minutes, he repeated the drill again-with terms like ‘forward’, ‘backward’, ‘bend down’, over right’, ‘over left’, ‘get down’, ‘get back’, ‘hold on’, ‘lean back’, and on and on and he went...

But most importantly, he ensured that we learnt the technique of holding the paddle very carefully. Later, much to our surprise, he asked all of us to jump into the water. This was

Page 37: KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalorekledentalbengaluru.com/pdf/A1.pdf2!! KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalore Principal: Dr. Srivatsa G Vice-Principal: Dr. Sudhir Patil

37

fun, even though all of us had varying fears of the waters. Later, I found out that, through this exercise, he sifts through the camaraderie of the group, in case of any emergency. He taught us how to rescue one another and, if a person fell far away, how to throw in a rope and rescue him/her.

Whenever a boat came within our paddling distance, we, at our guide’s command, splashed the surprised occupants of the other boat with cold water! Then, as if it were a war cry, the raft took-off and we were paddling furiously.

It was fun during those first few minutes, as all of us wanted to show off our new found knowledge of the raft while the guide kept testing us. He would change commands every other second to push our limits and he would make us paddle furiously until he seemed satisfied with the amount of sweat beads on our foreheads.

This went on for some time, until suddenly; we all grew silent upon hearing roaring waters. The guide informed us that it

was the famous Eddy’s Beard Rapid, our first major obstacle. We braced ourselves, as he got repeating the instructions again; we knew that all our learning, in the past half an hour, would now be put to test. We approached the rapid slowly. After ensuring that everyone was ready, he yelled “Let’s go!” The raft lurched ahead and soon, we were paddling furiously. The raft entered the rapid and everything afterward was a blur. Water came gushing in. I remember gasping for air and being surrounded by water till my chest. The raft was apparently filled with water.

Then, all of a sudden, the raft jumped ahead and we rushed away from the rapid into absolute stillness. Silence prevailed for a few seconds and then, our whoops of joy followed. We were all revelling in the fact that we were all safe and the experience was all the more exciting for that! The guide explained that the rapids, though they might seem scary, can be easily manoeuvred. Soon, we found ourselves becoming adept at handling them, crossing one rapid after another. It was a full-filled two hours, as we paddled through the dense forests of Dandeli and crashed down huge rapids, reaching the shores, grinning from ear to ear.

Rafting has marked the turnaround of tourism in Dandeli. However, the excitement around rafting needs to be efficiently controlled. Rafting operators need to ensure that no harm is ever done to the ecology of the river.

It’s you... who is my first best friend

It’s you... with whom I played for the first time

It’s you... with whom I used to fight for silly reasons

It’s you... from whom I learnt a lot in my life

It’s you... who guided me in the right way when I was wrong

It’s you... with whom I shared all my feelings

And it’s the one and only you whom I miss a lot in your absence

Because it’s my immense pleasure that your presence in my life will make me feel that

PROUD TO BE AN INDIAN

India, a country with a culture having more than 10,000 years has enriched the global scientific, educational, economic and cultural scenario significantly. That is the reason why Mark Twain has stated “India is the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend and the great-grandmother of tradition”. Being born in such a great country, you have millions of reasons to feel proud as an Indian.

When the residents of today’s developed nations were living as nomadic forest dwellers, we the Indians, set up Harappa civilization, the first planned city of the world.

First university of the world was established in Nalanda (In modern Bihar) in the year 700BC. More than 60 subjects were taught here to near about 10,500 students who came from different parts of the world.

42

We have never invaded any country in the history of 5000 years. Rather, Buddha and Gandhi taught the world the power of non-violence and truth. Recently, American President Barack Obama has openly admitted that Gandhi is an ideal for him.

Till 1896, India was the only known source of Diamond in the world. Tremendous wealth of India attracted several invaders and traders. Till the invasion of British East India Company, India was the richest country in the world.

Number system is the greatest contribution of India to science in general and mathematics in particular. Indian mathematician Aryabhatta invented ZERO. Bhaskaracharya, in 5th century, calculated the time taken by earth to rotate around the sun exactly. Budhayana calculated the value of pi. Algebra, trigonometry and calculus had their origin in India during 6th century.

Ayurveda, the earliest school of medicine has its origin in India. Surgery was done for the first time in India by Sushrutha 2600 years back.

India taught the art of navigation to the world on River Sind 6000 years ago. Proof to it is the derivation of the very word Navigation from NAVGATIH (a Sanskrit word).

According to prominent Linguistics, Sanskrit is the mother of all European languages. Forbes magazine has rated Sanskrit as the most suitable language for software applications.

SO... LET’S FEEL PROUD TO BE A PART OF OUR GLORIOUS NATION.

When he knew, the love in her was not just love but more than that;

She’s the one who made his life stupendous

She’s the one who gave up all her joys for him

She’s the one who found joy in him

She’s the one whose life is submerged in him

MY ADVENTURE LOVE STORY Hi...! This is Charlie and I’m going to tell you a story today.

Story which begins with an adventure trip of 5 and ends in a love story of 2.

It was me, Lucy, Juliane, Peter and Zolo. We were childhood friends and grew up playing and schooling together in Spring Dale High School. Juliane was actually a new addition. She was Peter’s step-sister. His mom actually remarried after his dad’s death in army few years back. I don’t know why but I didn’t like her much, maybe because she was younger to us and didn’t fit in our shoes. As kids we loved hiking and we used to visit that small hill in our hometown which we called is “Mount Royal”.

Page 52: KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalorekledentalbengaluru.com/pdf/A1.pdf2!! KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalore Principal: Dr. Srivatsa G Vice-Principal: Dr. Sudhir Patil

52

This time we thought of a bigger expedition. We packed our bags and left our homes. One Saturday morning around 5am we planned to cross Mount Royal and see what’s beyond it. When we asked people before going, many warned us of the dangers and this made us more curious. We had our packed bags on and started walking. Finally before it was dawn we somehow crossed the mountain. 3 of them were walking in front and I was beside the river filling my bottles with water because we were not sure what’s further. As I was backing up to reach my friends, I saw Juliane far behind. Her legs were struck to some roots lagging out from an old tree. I didn’t feel like leaving her and going further, so I turned back and ran to help her. Finally I helped her out of the danger. But as soon as we turned to return to our group we were confused with the route. Peter had the route map. Within minutes we realized that we were lost. I lost my temper. I actually didn’t like Juliane being a part of our trip as she was younger to us by 2 years. But then we both were helpless. We walked and walked for miles and were totally tired. There we found a huge bungalow which appeared kinda haunted.

Page 53: KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalorekledentalbengaluru.com/pdf/A1.pdf2!! KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalore Principal: Dr. Srivatsa G Vice-Principal: Dr. Sudhir Patil

53

We thought of going there and resting for a while. We entered the mansion. It was very huge and scary, filled with dust and cob webs all over the walls and furniture. We just walked around and saw a staircase.

Both of us went top but suddenly within fraction second I heard a THUD sound and I was pushed down almost out of the bungalow. Juliane was trapped inside. She came downstairs and before she could reach the huge glass door, the door was slammed behind me pushing me out. I was really scared and confused about the things going on. When I regained my consciousness I realized I was on the porch next to the main door and Juliane was trapped inside. I tried opening the door but failed all the time.

Juliane looked around for any other door but the mansion didn’t have any. As she was walking around the house she found an old manuscript rolling and tied with a damp red ribbon. She opened the scroll and to her surprise something was written in it in Devanagari script which none of us could understand. Since it was a glass bungalow, I could see everything going on inside.

Suddenly saw a spark from the chimney and an unusual creature appeared in front of her. She looked like a witch just like the one we have seen in movies and books.

Page 54: KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalorekledentalbengaluru.com/pdf/A1.pdf2!! KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalore Principal: Dr. Srivatsa G Vice-Principal: Dr. Sudhir Patil

54

I couldn’t believe my eyes. She snatched the scroll from her and began to scream “You are my prey and I won’t spare you”. Juliane begged to pardon her and spare her life but the witch did not pay a heed. She screamed so loud that I could hear it through the glass. The she came out and stood in front of me and said “I’m sure you don’t love her else the spell would break” and she started laughing in a weird manner. I was dead scared and didn’t dare to move. I consoled myself and gathered all the strength and courage and asked her “Why are you asking me that?”

Page 55: KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalorekledentalbengaluru.com/pdf/A1.pdf2!! KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalore Principal: Dr. Srivatsa G Vice-Principal: Dr. Sudhir Patil

55

Then she replied “If you would fall in love with her within 2 days, I have to let her free else I’ll get the authority to take her and enhance my age and beauty. Now I don’t think I need to worry because anyway you don’t love her” saying so gave a huge laughter. It was the truth that I wouldn’t fall in true love with her or any other girl in just 2 days. It was nearly impossible. I was worried as I didn’t want to see her dying in front of me. I was helpless. I stood outside the main door and she was sitting beside it inside. She called me closer to the door and tried saying something. Finally I could hear a bit. It was dawn and we were terribly tired. She told me to go and find my way out of this place. She also said that she knew I would never fall in love specially with her. She said “It’s Ok. I do understand” and asked me to leave that haunted place. She was worried that I may fall into trouble because of her. She was concerned about me and I could make that out. I

Page 56: KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalorekledentalbengaluru.com/pdf/A1.pdf2!! KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalore Principal: Dr. Srivatsa G Vice-Principal: Dr. Sudhir Patil

56

hardly bothered about her. My heart melted for her but I knew I’m not in love. After thinking a lot, I decided to move out and try getting some help from someone and then save her. I couldn’t sit idle there. So I set out to find some help. It was of no use. I just had 15 hours to help her. At noon, the witch came there and started laughing at our condition. She was happy that she could take Juliane with her. Time passed and it was dusk. I didn’t have much time to help her. I lied to her that I loved Juliane. She laughed again and said that if I really loved her, the spell would automatically break and she won’t be able to touch her. Finally it was time and the witch entered the house to drag her and go. As she was dragging her, I screamed “Stop... Stop...” and she turned back suddenly. Juliane’s eyes met mine and we stayed like that for a while. Suddenly the witch left her hand and was not able to touch her. I was dumbstruck and so was she. Juliane ran towards me and hugged me tight. I had tears in my eyes. I confessed that I couldn’t see her going away from me. And that I really love her. Heartless Charlie was finally in love.

Page 57: KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalorekledentalbengaluru.com/pdf/A1.pdf2!! KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalore Principal: Dr. Srivatsa G Vice-Principal: Dr. Sudhir Patil

57

After a while, we took our stuffs and started moving out from that place. We called out for help for hours and finally met our friends near the river from where we were lost.

All were shocked to see me and Juliane hand in hand. We narrated the whole story to them and carried on with our trek happily.

BRAIN BOOSTER Lateral thinking:

New shoes:

Q:

One day, two mothers and two daughters went shopping for shoes. Their shopping spree was successful- each bought a pair of shoes, and all together, they had three pairs. How is this possible???

A:

Only three people went shopping: A grandmother, a mother and a daughter but remember that the mother was grandmother’s daughter!

Logic: Colours:

Q:

Imagine a world in which the colours of things have changed from what we consider normal.

Assume the following changes:

Snow is now red

Grass is now black

The sky is now brown

Blood is now white

Soot is now green

Page 61: KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalorekledentalbengaluru.com/pdf/A1.pdf2!! KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalore Principal: Dr. Srivatsa G Vice-Principal: Dr. Sudhir Patil

61

In such a world, what is the colour of dirt?

A:

Dirt is now blue. The puzzle consists of pairs that exchange colours. Since the sky is now brown, brown things become blue.

A skinny riddle: Q:

What is being described in this riddle?

When I am filled,

I can point the way

When I am empty

Nothing moves me

A:

A glove.

Batting practice: Q:

Jack and Jill were practising batting. Jack’s first time at bat, he hit 75 out of hundred pitches thrown by Jill. Then Jill hit 75 out of a hundred pitches thrown by Jack. After a little break, Jack took a second turn at bat. Jill threw him 50 pitches, and he hit 35 of them. Jill was tired, so she didn’t take a second turn at bat. Who had the best average for the day Jack or Jill?

Page 62: KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalorekledentalbengaluru.com/pdf/A1.pdf2!! KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalore Principal: Dr. Srivatsa G Vice-Principal: Dr. Sudhir Patil

62

A:

Jill had the best average.

She hit 75 out of 100 pitches, for an average of 75%. Jack hit 75 out of 100 pitches in his first round. Then he hit 35out of 50 pitches in his second round. Add his hits in both rounds (75+35) for a total of 110 hits. Then add the total number of pitches Jill threw to Jack (100 in round one+50 in round 2) for a total of 150 pitches. Finally, divide Jack’s total number of hits (110) by total number of pitches (150) to get his average for both rounds.

The result is 73.3%, which is lower than Jill’s average of 75%.

MY BEST FRIEND – MY BROTHER...

Memories of you are like my shadow

I can’t move a step forward without your memories

You inspired me with your great thoughts

But was always kidding by your silly thoughts

People liking you were many more

When they reached you, you were no more

With your presence, my life was joyful

With your absence my life is painful

Days spent with you are unforgettable

Days passing without you is unbelievable

To my lovely brother:

Your absence also has a presence in my life.

THE FINAL VERDICT Our land is in trouble it needs your help, so are the oceans, the coral, and the kelp. There must be a way for all to unite, to stop the earth from a disastrous fright. We can’t leave this world a barren waste land, but luscious and fertile. We are destroying our nature taking away what is the earth’s billions of leaches. Few natural habitats are left on the globe... all others are scattered like the beats of a strobe.

Beyond the horizon, stands Mother Nature waiting for the final verdict – HER DESTRUCTION. She is serving a life-term of millions of years and she is sentenced by her own children...

A few million years ago, when Nature became the mother of thousands of living things, she had not thought that her own children will become her murderers. But how can her children forget that without her, they would not survive either?

Even after creating all the beautiful things, the earth seemed incomplete to her. So she created different kind of toys and put life into them. Soon, she made her masterpiece – Humans... and gifted them with brains. The brain gave them supremacy over all living beings. So she taught them to use their unique gift for the benefit of all her creations. But, slowly man became greedy for power and hungered for supremacy. This spelled Doom for all...

Now, Mother Nature stands with her head hanging, ready for it to be cut off. She is sobbing in pain and grieving over the destruction of the rest of her children by her dearest child.

Let’s make a vow together, today, that we won’t let our Mother shed a single tear again... Never again.

A MAN’S TRUE FRIEND... Let us understand the story of a man who had three friends. Two of whom he loved and the third friend was not somebody he would go to at the time of trouble.

It happened one day that the king commanded the man’s presence in the court at which he was greatly alarmed. He was sure he was going to be taken to task by the king and wished to produce an advocate to safeguard himself. Accordingly he went to the two friends he loved. The first one refused to go with him. The other offered to go with him as far as the king’s gate but not further. In his helplessness and anxiety, he called upon the third friend whom he least favoured. That friend not only went willingly but also defended the man before the King and he was acquitted.

In the similar manner, every man has three friends. When death summons him, to appear before his creator His first friend who he thinks he loves and is loved in return namely his money, material and wealth, cannot do him any good and cannot go with him a single step. His second friend, his relatives, friends and neighbours can only accompany him up to the burial ground but cannot defend him before the Supreme judge.

It is the third friend whom he does not hold in high esteem, good deeds which will go with him before the creator and defend him.

Therefore, let us do one good deed every day. They will speak for us and stand by us. Moreover, it is only through them that we will be able to attain salvation (Moksha).

The Little Things That Make Us Happy Raindrops on roses, an infant’s laughter, a light shower of rain after a tiresome sunny afternoon…..these are few of my favourites.

Isn’t it wonderful how even the smallest of things in life are capable of bringing a smile not only on our faces but also in our hearts? In today’s world, a genuine smile has become a rare sight, a heartfelt laughter, a thing of the past. This is because we get preoccupied with the superficial things. A failed exam, a breakup or a lost job is the end of the world as we know it.

Nowadays, we are all spending our lives in pursuit of riches, so much that we do not realize that happiness can also come from the smallest things. For example, we are delighted when we find money in an old pair of jeans which we haven’t used for a long time, an old couple holding hands brings a smile to our faces, drinking a hot cup of chocolate on a chilly evening, watching a little baby smile in its sleep, watching a sunset, waking up before the alarm goes off and realizing that you still have some time to sleep, that little dance your heart does when your classes are cancelled and you can sleep for some extra time, the smell of rain on wet mud, a walk around ur favourite park/neighbourhood, meeting up with old friends, seeing your parents happy…these are a few other things that make us happy

The big things are like getting your dream job, going on that long vacation we’ve been planning for a long time, achieving

100

that dream we’ve been working hard on, finding your better half…but it’s the little things that we get reminded of when one day we are sitting on the porch. Those are the things that made us smile.

The big things are necessary of course; they give us reason and purpose. They drive our lives, keeping us busy and motivated through a seemingly purposeless world. But they aren’t the things that give us most joy. The things that bring us true happiness is the ones that we don’t really pay heed to. It is time we took time out from this rat race, stepped aside and breathed life into our lives. Deepika Prabhu
