How Burglars See Your Home

What makes a home an attractive target for burglars? What can you do to protect yourself? Here are five easy tips to “think like a burglar” and keep your home safe.

Keep a low profile. Is your flat-screen TV visible through a window from the street?

Do you have an expensive car parked in your driveway? To a burglar, those are signs that your home might offer a lucrative haul. Keep expensive items concealed, and don’t advertise large purchases by leaving boxes at the curb.

Maintain visibility. Tall shrubs and privacy fences provide burglars with cover so your

neighbors won’t see them breaking in. Keep windows and doors visible to deter burglars. Install motion-activated floodlights around your home to draw attention if someone approaches after dark.

Lock upstairs windows, and don’t keep ladders outside. People often forget to lock upstairs windows—and burglars know

it. Make sure all your windows are locked when you’re not home, and keep your ladders in a locked garage or shed so a burglar can’t use them to access upstairs windows.

Make it look like you’re home. Unoccupied houses are prime targets. Use timers on lights,

televisions and radios to create the appearance of activity. Hire landscapers if you’ll be out of town for an extended period so your home looks well cared for. If a burglar thinks someone is home, they’re more likely to skip your house.

Secure doors and windows.Burglars look for weak doors with old hardware that are easy to kick

in. If your doors aren’t secure, replace the knobs, locks and hardware. Use long screws that help resist kick-ins, and consider adding dead bolt. If you have a doggie door, secure it with a lock or just seal it up.

In response to increased congestion and slowed speeds, Houston Metro announced in early January it will raise high occupancy toll lane toll rates by as much as $2.25 during peak commuting hours and extend the HOV-only hours on several Houston freeways starting Jan. 6.

“Metro wants to improve traffic flow in the HOV/HOT lanes, which currently—especially during the morning commute—has slowed down, causing longer trip times,” said Carolina Mendoza, media relations specialist with Metro. “The changes impact the peak morning commuting hours only.”

To help facilitate traffic flow, the hours that high occupancy vehicles can access HOV lanes will be extended by 30 minutes during morning rush hour. Motorists will be able to access north and southbound HOV lanes along Hwy 59 from 6:30–8 a.m.—previously 7–8 a.m—as of Jan. 6.

In addition, the Hwy. 59 northbound HOT lane toll rates will increase to $4.50 from $2.25, and southbound HOT lane toll rates will increase to $6.50 from $4.50 between 6–6:30 a.m.

Metro's HOT lanes were first implemented to provide an additional mobility option and help reduce congestion, said Tom Lambert, interim president and CEO of Metro.

“The lanes are first and foremost HOV lanes, and we don't want to compromise the benefit of the HOV system for those who ride the bus, vanpool or carpool,” he said. “We need to tweak the system to ensure traffic flows smoothly.”

Changes to the HOV and HOT lanes are being made based on recent traffic pattern studies, according to Metro. Other changes to regional HOV/HOT lanes that go into effect Jan. 6 include:

• High occupancy vehicles will be able to access Hwy. 290, I–45 and Hwy. 59 HOV lanes from 6:30–8 a.m.

• Hwy. 290's 3+ HOV requirement will start at 6:30 a.m.—previously 6:45 a.m.

• Toll rates on I-45 south and Hwy. 59 south will increase to $6.50 between 6–6:30 a.m.

• Toll rates on Hwy. 290 and I-45 north will increase to $7 between 6–6:30 a.m.

• Toll rates on Hwy. 59 north will increase to $4.50 between 6–6:30 a.m.

1. Oatmeal - Great source of soluble fiber and slow-digesting carbohydratesthat will keep blood sugar and insulin in check so fat burning can stay high.

2. Eggs - A form of well-absorbed protein, healthy fats and Vitamin D (found in the egg yolk). Eggs also contain lecithin, which promotes healthy liver function, thereby helping the body to burn fat.

3. Salmon - High in omega-3 fatty acids, salmon reduces inflammation in the body and lowers LDL and triglyceride levels while raising good HDL levels. Salmon also has a beneficial effect on leptin (hunger hormone) levels in the body, which means it helps to suppress your appetite.

4. Nuts - Another source of fiber and rich in omega-3s, these fats help to regulate blood sugar and protect the heart and the immune system.

5. Grapefruit & Berries - These fruits contain slow-digesting carbs and are rich in fat-fighting fiber. Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries all are loaded with soluble fiber and antioxidants that protect blood vessels and promote healthy blood flow.

6. Avocado - It’s got fat, yes, but the good kind! The monounsaturated fats found in avocado are burned readily for fuel during exercise and actually encourage fat burning. Good source of fiber and antioxidants.

7. Leafy Greens - Broccoli, specifically, is a fibrous carb that can make you feel full quickly—one reason why it’s a great food for getting lean. Broccoli also contains phytochemicals that can help enhance fat loss.

8. Cinnamon - Helps to reduce blood sugar levels, which in turn prevents the body from storing sugar as fat. Add it to your oatmeal and yogurt to enhance flavor without adding calories.

9. Green Tea - Drink this! Not only is green tea packed with antioxidants, it also contains catechins, a phytochemical that helps speed up metabolism and burn more fat.

10. Beans & Legumes - Great sources of protein and they normalize insulin levels and help keep your blood sugar steady throughout the day. Black beans, Garbanzo beans, red beans and lentils are all great to incorporate into your diet.
