The Mountain Oasis spa landscape encompasses an area of 5,000 m² and is located on a site set behind the Tschuggen Grand Hotel at the foot of the Arosa Mountains. It has been built into the mountain slope and linked with the hotel via a glass bridge. Bot ta’s philosophy of achieving a harmo-nious connection with the surrounding natural environment continues into the interior. The inside of the Mountain Sauna has been clad using weathered pinewoods lef t in their natural state, and a fireplace has been integrated into the large sauna heater.

The task which Lord Norman Foster set himself was the complete replace-ment of later additions to the legendary Dolder Grand Hotel by two new wings. These wings, the Spa Wing and the Golf Wing, nestle up against the fully restored main building providing a seamless link between the past and the future. Spa expert Sylvia Sepielli has very much taken “classic tra-ditions with a techno beat” as her watchword in continuing this symbiosis between tradition and modernity into the spa area. Steam pots, newly de-signed aromatic steam columns are on hand to greet guests in the foyers to the Ladies’ und Gentlemen’s Spa. The spa rooms themselves each extend over an area of 100 m² and in the centre provide an opportunit y to enjoy a relaxing footbath on river pebbles in the warm water of the Japanese Kotatsu.

This underlines the exclusiveness: what can be more precious than a diamond?

Idea & design concept The initial idea was to move beyond the concept of a holiday at sea in the form of a classical cruise with all the traditions and conventions this entailed. The aim was to use the first sea-going “club resor t” of its kind to stage holiday trips which were both active and casual, something which was completely new on the cruise market. The success which this form of holiday was to enjoy began in 1996 with the ship now known as the AIDAcara and has since proved unstoppable.

The most per fect location for a “spa on board” is probably directly above the bridge. The cruise ship AIDAdiva is the first to devote this prominent position to a wellness area. It enables the guests using the facilities of the sauna, steam bath, treatment and quiet rooms to enjoy unrestricted and magnificent sea views.

Dimensions Overall area: 110 m². SANARIUM®, cool-down area, relaxation zone with garden access and terrace.

The site adjoins the main Hinteregger building and has been extended and altered a number of times in the past, star ting out as a cinema. The two architects took the original structure of the building as their star ting point, largely demolishing any later add-ons and add-ins. The new structure is wrapped in a skin of wood and glass, enabling the creation of a streamlined and modern building which fits seamlessly into its surrounding environment and pro-vides a sauna area with thrilling views more than a match for any film.

The facilities at the Friedrichsbad in Baden-Baden have been renovated in the classical manner and have been firing the enthusiasm of spa guests from around the globe since July 2007. Visitors can expect a journey back through time into the antique world of fine bathing culture. The bathing guest passes through a defined circuit of 17 stations contained within the facilit y. The focal point is the large, circular exercise pool set in a magnificent cupola construction 7.5 metres in height, this being the only time when women and men bathe together. The hot spring waters are used to generate steam in the three historic steam rooms. These waters are drawn directly from the Baden-Baden thermal spring and are fed over water cascades to produce intensive steam created by nature itself and without any need to deploy conventional evaporation technology. The individual massage benches are made of natural stone and were designed to be height-adjustable during the course of the renovation works in order to allow therapists to adopt the ideal working position in each case.

The Carlton Hotel reopened in December 2007 having undergone complete restoration and is now once again resplendent in the same light green and grey colour scheme it featured in 1913. Interior designer Carlo Rampazzi has transformed the Carlton Hotel into a gem of colour diversit y and unusual forms. His signature is also very much in evidence in the wellness area where the new sauna world of the Carlton Spa, carefully integrated into the historic vaulted ceiling, greets guests with its dream-like green and blue mosaic pat terns.
