introduction

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT)has constructed a bicycle network comprised of innovative types of bicycle infrastructure, including the Spring Streetand Main Street Bicycle Couplet.Research Question: What are the differences, if any, between bicyclists' and motorists' behaviors whendriving/riding on a street with a buffered color bicyclelane (Spring Street), compared to driving/riding on astreet with a buffered bicycle lane without color (MainStreet)?Sample data (collected with a personal camera) consisted of:1½ hour video segments

analysis

Calculated percentages and confidence intervals for eachdependent variable on Spring Street and Main Street.Dependent variables whose confidence intervals did not overlapare representative of the bicyclists and motorists generalpopulation and include:

conclusion and recommendations

A majority of the dependent variables confidence intervalsoverlapped The difference between bicyclists' and motorists' behaviorsrecorded on Spring Street and Main Street was minimalAdditional studies are needed to better identify both groupsbehaviors while interacting with various types of bicycleinfrastructureThe Spring Street bicycle lane design was modified in late 2013;future research is needed to determine what impacts the redesignhas had on bicyclists' and motorists' behaviors
