Kappa Kappa Gamma Atlanta Alumnae Association Fall 2013 A Letter from the President: Dear Atlanta Kappas, What does Kappa mean to you? A discussion topic at last year’s board retreat was “What does Kappa mean to you?” It was great to hear all the women’s comments and Kappa stories. Kappa shines through to each of us at different times in our life, whether it is when we need the strength during difficult times, to celebrate with during our happy times, or just when we have the time. For me, Kappa is for me - I don’t have to share it with my husband or son! I enjoy seeing and catching up with familiar faces at events and meeting new ones and hearing their Kappa story. For those of you who don’t know me, I was a Kappa at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. I moved to Atlanta from Boston in 2005 with my husband, Todd. The alumnae association truly helped me make Atlanta my new home and meet many wonderful women that are great friends. Along with Kappa, I’ll stay very busy this year with our son who is 2 ½ along with fitting in some freelance marketing work. I know there was a lot of change last year – we needed a little freshening up. This year our plan is to evaluate and see what worked well and tweak what didn’t work as well as it could. Here are some highlights of what we are keeping: • Big Tent, especially for paying dues (so be on the lookout for your email dues invite!). But we are going to use a combination of other resources for events and communication (more on that below). • Cocktail Party is staying in the spring (April 2014) as the Little Blue Dress Party. • The philosophy that we are going to reinvest your dues back into events where you can see them! Here’s what we are going to continue to work on: • Effectively communicating with our dues-paying members – this may mean reaching you across multiple mediums, Big Tent, Facebook, Email/Evite, mail, etc. We don’t want you to miss out on anything! I hope I get to see you all at one of our great events this year and to hear what Kappa means to you. Please reach out to me, [email protected] , if you have feedback or want to find out how you can get more involved. It is going to be a great year! Fall 2013

A Letter from the President:Dear Atlanta Kappas,

What does Kappa mean to you?

Please reach out to me, [email protected], if you have feedback or want to find out how you can get more involved. It is going to be a great year!

Where can you learn about AAA?

Where can you learn about all of the goings on of the KKG Atlanta Alumni Association? Why at Big Tent of course! Kappa will once again be utilizing our online community forum at bigtent.com

Why join the KKG AAA Big Tent community? There are lots of reasons to join! First and foremost, it’s the best way to find out about all of the news and upcoming events. You can get all the event information for the AAA as a whole. You can also stay up to date on events planned for our interest groups. Check out the last page of the newsletters for descriptions.

Want to try a new restaurant and meet new people, but can’t make the Dinner Group this month? Get a group of your sisters together by posting to the Forums tab! The Forums feature allows members to connect on any topic they (i.e. you!) want. Here you can plan your own movie nights, happy hours, Tough Mudder team, etc. or get advice on the best places to live in Atlanta, recruit or be recruited for a new job or team, etc. In addition to Forums, the Classifieds section allows members to find new roommates and buy and sell belongings. It’s like our very own Craigslist.com except a hundred times safer and more reliable.

So how do you join our fabulous community? It’s fast and easy! Simply go to www.bigtent.com, search Atlanta Alumnae Association of KKG, and click on the Join button to join. Once you’ve completed the sign up process and paid your dues, get started by creating a profile, to tell the other members a little bit about yourself, and joining a subgroup. Plus, make sure you set up your email settings---we found the daily or weekly digest is the best option to not miss any news.

Need additional help using the site? View the tutorial video or download the “How To” PDF here.

Founder’s Day On October 6, we will be celebrating founder’s day with our Emory sisters! Have you been a member for 50, 60, or 75 years? If so, let Stacey Williams know at [email protected] or 404-788-8612

Reflections from a Fraternity Council Member:Probably like some of you, I frequently heard that Kappa was for a lifetime while I was in school. I had a wonderful four years at Ole Miss, but honestly I could not see the value beyond college. Why in the world would I want to engage in Kappa post-college?

Wasn’t this simply supposed to be a four year experience?

When I moved to Atlanta 28 years ago, joining the Atlanta Alumnae Association was nowhere on my “to do” list. I stumbled into the

alumnae journey of Kappa quite by accident. A good friend of mine from church happened to know the membership adviser at Emory University, so the next thing I knew I was headed to Epsilon Epsilon chapter to help serve some punch. When you are new in town, you are eager to make friends anyway, anyhow, so I said “yes”.

That “yes” was the beginning of a lifetime of Kappa. Much to my surprise, my experience as an alumna has far surpassed my

undergraduate experience. Kappa has opened to doors to friendships that transcend geography and generations. Our

membership does not merely connect us through our undergraduate experience, but gives us opportunities for networking,

friendship, volunteering and service throughout our entire lives.

So, what are you waiting for? Say yes to Kappa and I am confident that you too will be surprised by the world available beyond college.
