KJUS rider Bode Miller is a legend on the international skiing circuit: fast, successful, freedom-loving, close to nature. But also independent, forceful and spontaneous. Christoph Frutiger and Brett Rapkin have made a new movie about him, revealing an open, pleasant and profound person.

Filmmaker Christoph Frutiger was amazed. Here was one of the best skiers of all time, in his motor home sitting in front of a game console, holding a guitar. And taking great pleasure in the rocking tune he was eliciting from the instrument. “Like a big boy who is just enjoying life,” says Frutiger.

This is how we know Bode Miller. On and off the slopes. Different. Exciting. Playful. Uncompromising. Forceful. And successful: world champion, world cup victor, Olympic medalist, serial winner in the world cup.

With body and soulBut Bode Miller is also an “open, pleasant, profound and grounded person.” That is how Christoph Frutiger came to know him. The renowned Swiss outdoor and stunt filmmaker (involved in the last three Bond movies, among others) paid him a visit at the FIS ski races in Adelboden, Wengen and Kitzbühel. Working with American director Brett Rapkin, he has made a short documentary film that portrays the person behind the skiing legend.

Those who want to experience the skiing circuit and its protagonists up close have to cross some hurdles. And that is not a simple task. “Without the help of Team America, we would not have gotten access to the training area so easily,” Frutiger says in retrospect. “But Bode and his team were very supportive.”

Bode Miller took the movie team on an exciting journey; Interviews on the ski lift. Access inside his motor home and into his own per-sonal world. The result are images and a side of Bode nobody has seen before. However: Those who want to accompany the skiing star, up close and personal, have to brace themselves. They need a large dose of flexibility. They have to get involved with Bode Miller. He has a big heart and can hardly bear to refuse an autograph. He takes time for his fans. Keeps a cool head. Even in the midst of major commotion and stress. And he is always there for his Team America of around eight members. There he is the boss and friend all rolled into one. He takes time for his people. Looks after them. “Like a circus director who loves his company with body and soul,”

KJUS & bode miller –a shared passion for the sport of skiing

KJUS has been the skiwear sponsor for Bode Miller and his Team America since the fall of 2007. during the 08/09 World Cup skiing season, the KJUS camera team of Christoph Frutiger and Brett Rapkin fol-lowed Team America and recorded Bode during his everyday life. A fascinating film with exciting discus-sions about the World Cup skiing circuit, ski racing and Bode’s philosophy about ambition, knowing your limits, risk, fighting hard and about the constant challenge of living this philosophy.

KJUS is also demanding and strives to set new standards. To remain uncompromising in terms of esthetics and functionality of skiwear and sports wear.

says Christoph Frutiger. He learned that from his parents. At home, Bode and his three sisters had plenty of company from their peers. Because it “smelled a bit more of freedom” at their house. And of true solidarity.

We have to look after each otherAnd that remains to this day. What many don’t know: In the immedi-ate vicinity of his parents’ house, Bode has bought a farm engaged in organic agriculture. The proceeds go to his Turtle Ridge Foundation for the welfare of children. Bode Miller does a lot for the community. He says: “We have to look after each other.”

But professionalism never falls by the wayside. Christoph Frutiger had the chance to experience that. “Bode is very aware of his body and his limits. Where others take their training to the extreme, he knows how far he can and wants to go.” Or when he wants to dance through a quick slalom after a downhill training run. Which happened in Kitzbühel. After the second downhill training run he had enough of the fast tempo. Bode wanted to add a slalom run in the neighboring village. The message came by SMS. The film crew had to act quickly. They packed their things and were able to get breathtaking footage of Bode between the poles.

Typically Bode. Unconventional. Spontaneous. direct. Filmmaker Christoph Frutiger says: “Bode Miller is anything but a superficial partygoer and small-talker. What he says and does is meaningful.” At the end of last season, the world learned of his one-year-old daughter. He left the skiing circuit even before the season finals to spend time with his daughter. Over the long term, racing is difficult when you would rather be somewhere else entirely. Bode Miller has more than 360 races behind him. Not that he lost his appetite for the sport. Skiing will always be a part of him. But: He needs a break. Maybe forever. One thing is for sure: He wants to spend more time with his daughter. To be there with her. See her first steps. Hear her first words. Take responsibility. Enjoy life and his good fortune. Just as he has always done. And if he says goodbye to racing forever, that has positive aspects – he would have more time for KJUS…

lasse Kjus is there. Fredrik luytkis. Anja Alme Gardli. lucas Swieykowski. With his single-engine Cessna, lasse has flown the crew into the mountain landscape under the spell of an arctic winter. Eidsbugarden is what they call this place. A few shacks. A small hotel. No other traces of civilization. Nothing but sky and snow. The KJUS team riders are in their element. The first pictures are taken in glorious weather. In the warm light of the evening sun, the beauty of the Spirit Collection really comes into its own. Then, night falls. The temperature drops. Wednesday, March 11: An early start to the day. Sindre knows no mercy. He wants to capture the morning light. The day is long. Supported by a small group of local helpers the team gives it their all. The good mood among the partici-pants shows in the photos. The KJUS Spirit is alive: Not only in the new Spirit Collection, but also in the hearts of the crew. It is a good day.

Thursday, March 12: Gray-black clouds in the sky. Heavy snow flurries. A cold wind. KJUS weather. A final effort by the team. Then the photo shoot is complete. They head back south towards Oslo. Eidsbugarden falls back into its late winter sleep.
