The Indian Panorama section is a major highlight of the 48th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) and this year we are pleased to bring to you films of varied genres from various regions of India. The Indian Panorama section was introduced in the International Film Festival of India in 1978. It is devoted to showcasing the best new Indian films of the year. For 39 years, the Indian Panorama has been promoting Indian films and, through these films, the country’s rich culture and heritage. Films from all regions of the country, in varied languages, are not just screened, but celebrated, through the Indian Panorama every year.This year a total of 178 features and 161 non-features were received as entries, out of which 26 features and non-features across 24 languages were selected by our eminent jury. The features have films by accomplished directors, as well as those by young, debut filmmakers. The non-feature films selected represent the cultural and aesthetic flavors of different parts of the country, making every film special. Our Retrospective this year focuses on the recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2016), K. Viswanath, a man who turned from being an audiographer to becoming a director, screenwriter and character actor who has made invaluable contributions in Hindi, Tamil and Telegu Cinema. His films not only have strong content, endearing narratives, honest handling, but also cultural authenticity, which has great appeal for the masses.This year our film fraternity has lost some eminent personalities, and IFFI pays homage and tribute to them and to their work, which lives on. We pay tribute to Om Puri, Abdul Majid, Vinod Khanna, Tom Alter, Reema Lagoo, Kundan Shah, J. Jayalalithaa, Dasari Narayan Rao & Ramananda Sen Gupta for their contributions to the film industry.IFFI is also continuing with its effort to support the Accessible India Programme of the Government of India by making films accessible for the visually impaired and hearing impaired. SUJOY GHOSH (JURY CHAIRMAN)National Award-winning writer, director and screenwriter Sujoy Ghosh made his directorial debut in 2003 with the small-budget Jhankaar Beats, a thematic tribute to R. D. Burman. The movie proved to be a surprise hit. Ghosh has directed Home Delivery: Aapko... Ghar Tak (2005), Aladin (2009), Kahaani (2012) and Kahaani 2 (2016). Kahaani, featuring Vidya Balan gained widespread commercial success and critical acclaim. He started his acting career portraying the role of Bengali sleuth Byomkesh Bakshi in a film directed by Rituparno Ghosh in 2012. Gopi Desai has a diversified career in theatre, films, and television and is a filmmaker, writer and actor. She has worked on both fiction and non-fiction projects with human interest and social concerns as dominant themes. Gyan Correa is a writer, director and producer, having produced and directed over 500 TVCs, Corporates, TV and feature films. His maiden feature film, The Good Road (Gujarati) won a National Award and, was India’s Oscar submission in 2013. The film presents a fascinating and unexpected glimpse into the heart of an unseen India, where acts of great compassion are shown to utter strangers. Currently he is pursuing several, documentary projects and principal photography for his next feature film is scheduled to commence in 2018.

Apurva Asrani is a film editor & screenwriter. He received a Filmfare award for his editing work on crime drama Satya, followed with a National award for the bilingual comedy Snip!. He has since shaped the narrative of several films including Chhal, Om Jai Jagadish, Shahid, Jalpari, Children Of War, Citylights, Waiting & Aligarh. He has worked on the critically acclaimed Shahid as editor and co-screenplay writer for which he won Life Ok Screen Award for Best Screenplay. Merlvin Mukhim is an actor, singer and noted member of the film fraternity in Meghalaya. His work on Khasi and Bengali language films Ri–homeland of uncertainty (Khasi), Sohra Bridge (Bengali) and Onaatah – of the earth (Khasi) has been much appreciated and selected in three consecutive IFFI - Indian Panorama editions. He was presented the Young Achievers Excellence Award in the field of performing arts and playback singing (Regional) in 2007. He has earned accolades for his work as an actor in two National award winning films from Meghalaya; he bagged the Best Actor in a Negative Role award at the Film, North East Festival Itanagar in 2016 and earned a nomination for Best Actor at the Prag Cine Awards. A founding member of the Shillong Chamber Choir, he consistently engages with film industry peers to promote Meghalaya and North East as a potential filming destination.

HARI VISWANATH

Hari Viswanath is an Indian film director and producer. Inspired by real life incidents, his feature film debut Radiopetti (Radio Set), became the first Tamil film to win an Audience Award for Best Film in the Official Competition at the Busan International Film Festival (2015) and 46th edition of IFFI-Indian Panorama. It also won the 2nd Best Film Award and a Special Jury Mention for Best Acting at the Chennai International Film Festival 2015 including another award for Best Music at Imagine India Film Festival (2016, Spain) and Best Film Award by Puducherry Govt. Nikkhil Advani is an Indian film producer, director and screenwriter. He is one of the co-founders of Emmay Entertainment, a motion picture production company. He assisted filmmaker Sudhir Mishra on Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin (1996), for which he also co-wrote the screenplay. During Nikhil’s stint with Dharma Productions he directed Kal Ho Naa Ho starring Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Saif Ali Khan and Jaya Bachchan. The film was one of the biggest hits of 2003 and won six Filmfare awards besides firmly establishing him as a director. Nikhil, has directed India’s first stereoscopic 3D animation film, Delhi Safari, for which he also wrote the original story. Emmay Entertainment recently produced Akshay Kumar and Nimrat Kaur film based on the Gulf war crisis titled Airlift and the Farhan Akhtar headlined edgy ensemble film Lucknow Central.

Rahul Rawail, worked as an Assistant Director, with filmmaker Raj Kapoor, at the R.K.Studios, assisting him on Mera Naam Joker and Bobby. At R.K.Studios, he also assisted Shri. Randhir Kapoor on Kal Aaj Aur Kal and Dharam Karam. After his stint as an assistant director, he established himself as one of the most prominent filmmakers in the Indian Film Industry. He produced some films, and was actively involved, with, Rishi Kapoor and Naresh Malhotra (of Prime Focus) in setting-up the first Digital Audio Studio in Mumbai. He has been the director who has launched Kumar Gaurav, Vijeta Pandit, Sunny Deol, Amrita Singh, Paresh Rawal, Annu Kapoor, Kajol, Kamal Sadanah, Aishwarya Rai and John Abraham, having directed all their debut films. He was a member of the Jury for Indian films for the Oscars in 2015.

Ruchi Narain is a multi-award-winning film-maker who revels in working across genres. Nishikant Kamat’s directorial debut was the impactful Marathi language film Dombivali Fast. The film earned major critical acclaim in India and internationally. Nishikant then decided to push boundaries as he adapted Dombivali Fast in Tamil as Evano Oruvan starring R Madhavan. Shankhajeet De is a researcher and documentary filmmaker. He makes documentaries with an ethnographic lens. His debut feature documentary In the Shadow of Time (Samayara Chaaire-Odiya) on Ravana Chhaya, the shadow puppetry tradition of Odisha has won the Rajat Kamal for the Best Film on art and culture at the 64th National Film Awards. He has also made an ethnographic audio-visual journal on Togalu Gombeyaatta, the shadow puppetry tradition of Karnataka for the library of the puppet school in UNIMA, France. He is currently filming a feature documentary on the Ramaleela tradition in Odisha through multi-sited ethnographic methods. He is responsible for setting up the filmmaking department at Sri Aurobindo Centre for Arts & Communication (SACAC-New Delhi). He has been teaching research, screenplay, scriptwriting and direction for over eight years.

Shiny Jacob Benjamin, has been a documentary director since 1999. Earlier, she has worked with Malayala Manorama and Mathrubhumi, leading Newspapers in Malayalam as a features writer. Later, she joined Asianet, the first satellite Television channel in Malayalam. She has also worked with Indiavision, first news channel in Malayalam and as a chief producer with TV Channel Jaihind & Jaihind Middle East. She won 20 prestigious awards including 2 National Awards and 7 Kerala State Awards for her documentaries. She has been a jury member on FFK International Film Festival and the 28th Indian Panorama-IFFI jury. She has worked as Assistant Director for a Kamal Hassan film under the directorial guidance of T. K Rajeev Kumar and as the Associate Director for the 35th National Games 2015 held in Kerala.

Tinni Mitra is an editor. During her Masters course on Film Studies in Jadavpur University in Kolkata her interest for filmmaking grew and later she joined Satyajit Ray Film & TV Institute. She is a National Awardee for Best Editing for her work in her film-school diploma Germ. Tinni came to Bombay in 2009. Her first feature film Mumbai Cha Raja went to Toronto International and Abu Dhabi Film Festival. Her film as editor The Seventh Walk directed by Amit Dutta was the Closing Film of Cinema XXI section, Rome Film Festival, 2013. Based on the works of Indian painter Mr. Paramjit Singh, this film was also selected in Documentary Fortnights by Museum of Modern Arts (MOMA) in 2014. Tinni has edited documentaries produced by PSBT and Films Division and ITVS. She has attended Berlinale Talent Campus in 2015 as part of Editing Studio.

Tuhinabha Majumdar has worked as a writer, editor and director in the films and television industry for the last nineteen years. His film Aamaar Katha: Story Of Binodini, based on the legendary Bengali actress Binodini has received two Rajat Kamal Awards for Best Biographical and Historical Reconstruction film and Best Cinematography (Non-fiction) at the 62nd National Film Awards, 2014. He has also received the Golden Conch for the Best Fiction film and the Best Film of the Festival award in MIFF, for Midnight Bioscope and the Silver Award at the 11th Indian Documentary Producers’ Award for Excellence for City Within The City a PSBT documentary. Swaroop is a two time President’s award and Filmfare Award winning film, television and radio director and screenwriter. A FTII (India) alumnus, Swaroop’s student works were met with unusual international acclaim. Om-Dar-B-Dar is his path-breaking masterpiece. In 2014, he directed The Battle of Benaras, and went on to produce Tracing Phalke, and Atul, based on the world renowned Dadaist artist Atul Dodiya.

Kundan Shah was an Indian film director and writer. He is most known for his comedy classic Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and his 1985–1986, TV series Nukkad with Saeed Akhtar Mirza.
