Learning Bank: Johannes Brahms Born in 1833 to a musical family in Hamburg, Germany, Johannes Brahms
showed immediate promise as a pianist. By the time he was a teenager, he performedprofessionally and composed small works for the piano. In addition to his interests inmusic, the young Brahms was an avid reader, particularly of folklore, a passion thatwould influence his music later in life.
At the age of twenty, Brahms had the good fortune to meet and befriend therespected composer Robert Schumann. Schumann, impressed with the young man’smusic, wrote and published a laudatory and highly influential essay about Brahms’sartistic talent, an event that helped to advance his career considerably. Brahms was alsoa loyal friend to Schumann, assisting and comforting his wife Clara when her husbandsuffered a nervous breakdown and suicide attempt. Clara Schumann remained one ofBrahms’s closest friends until her death fifty years later.
The music of Brahms’s maturity reflects a mastery of diverse styles, from chamber music to full orchestra, choralmusic to Hungarian and Austrian-inspired folk and dance tunes. Not only did Brahms’s music combine differentstyles, however; it also linked together different historical perspectives of music. During his time, Brahms was a verycontroversial composer: some people believed his music to be conservative and old-fashioned, while others thoughtthat Brahms created “the music of the future.” Indeed, Brahms was both a traditionalist and a revolutionary. Hishighly organized synthesis of different musical styles and compositional approaches is an important characteristic ofhis compositions, including the Symphony No. 4 of 1886. Many musicians and scholars consider this symphony tobe the crowning achievement of his orchestral art. Like many of his other late compositions, the Symphony No. 4brings together contrasting musical influences to create a work that is both progressive and traditional while at thesame time remaining a deeply personal expression.
The third movement of Brahms’s Symphony No. 4, Allegro Giocoso, is full of humor and driving energy. Throughhis imaginative orchestration and thematic development, Brahms created a mood of witty contrasts, with quicklyalternating themes, stark dynamic juxtapositions, and rhythmic displacement. The movement should be performedwith a vigorous sense of humor and a lively rhythmic approach. Most of all, it should capture a spirit of carefree fun!
