Follinger Hall:
Stages
PICTURE SELECTION
The First picture I took was at the University
of Illinois campus in Champaign-Urbana at thecourt yard, I took this image because the angle
and the depth were ver natural and very calm
Took the image on the top of my truch in the
front of my home to get a sky line view focusingon the tops of the houses and showing a great
amount of lights and darks on how the sun
reects onto the trees in the morning.
This pictue was taken in a dorm room to show
a overview of the whole campus at The Univer-
sity of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Although
this picture shows a great amount of land and
area i didnt like it because the screen was in
the way and distorted the image greatly
I Took this picute outside of my house in Oak
Lawn by setting the camera on the street and
taking a snap shot of basically what you would
see if you were lieing on the oor looking down
the street, however i did not like it because the
car off to the side which distorts it in my eyes.
My favorite picture i took was this one in the middle of a courtyard at the University of Illinois campus at
Champaign-Urbana. I like this picture the most because of the signicance of the building at the center
of the image which is Follinger Hall the most well known lecture hall on the campus. This photo alsoshows a great amount of distance and detail because I believe i found the best distance away from the
building to capture as much detail and the surrounding area of the building in question

First OutlineThis is my rst outline of the picture of
Follinger Hall although there are many
rough spots that need to be smoothed our
for instance the background surrounding
the building needs to have a lot more detail
that I could see right away. Things that
need improvemetn in this image would be
the tree line the bushes in front of the build-
ing. Some things I was able to do well wasillustrate the darkness of the building to as
well as the detail of the buildings pillars and
styalistic windows

Outline Process
I believe my initial work went well with my rst draw -
ing, and I hope to improve on many things before
the due date. I plan to add much more detail, such
as Shadows for the trees and for the building in my
photo. I also hope to change some of my previous
work and smooth out a lot of my lines such as in thesidewalk. The peer review of my project helped me
greatly and really opened me up to many new ideas
and different directions to take my project in as well.
The craft of the photo that I have changed form
my original draft was that I originally had a very
light shade over the building that did a bad job of
depicting the actual color scheme of the building. I
believe I did a good job in using the dropper tool in
the building this time around showing the darks and
lights in the building. I also used the gradient toolfrom right to left with a dark brown to a lighter brown
to show the shadow line better across the building. I
also was able to better better illustrate the sidewalk
and darken the color in it better to draw attention
My initial work in my craft I was able to outline
everything with the pen tool, my main focus on
getting every aspect of the outline correctly was
the building in the center of the picture. I also was
able to use the dropper tool to be able to accurately
represent the colors in the photograph. I believemy craft draws immediate attention to the sidewalk
which I plan to change in my work with the change
of the color.
away from it even though my eye is still immedia
drawn to it.
The composition in this project I believe is done
well. all of the colors are similar in there value wh
is dark. The only part of this project that I see has
a very different value than the rest of the project
the sidewalk which is very bright. The character othis picture i believe is a very quiet and peaceful
around with the absence of extreme brightness i
the picture.

Change of Focus
The craft of this work is monochromatic work-
ing from a range of browns to show the darks, the
lights, and the middle area of the picture. I chose
brown to continue the dark features of the build-
ing and to blend the background in better to better
depict the focus of the picture, while the original
outline of the picture brought the focus to the
sidewalk using brown in the monochromatic work
brought out the key focus on the building. The
concept of this work is a much darker sense of the
original picture to demonstrate a heavier amount of
feeling when looking at the picture rather than the
light feeling and less of a meaning that the origi-

This is the original outline of Follinger hall
that I completed; the craft of this image
brought the key focus of the eyes directly to
the sidewalk. I didnt depict the photos colorsproperly onto the building which distorted the
image greatly and caused frst glimpse views
to be confused on where the shadow lines
are and the focus of the image was on. The
concept of this was to brighten up all of the
colors in the area to show all the details of the
building before I was able to depict the proper
nal work expressed. The outlines on the bui
and the trees also bring out a darker sense w
creepiness of the outline almost like a Hallo
creepy picture. The composition of this pho

colors on the building to show the shadow
lines and the background colors accurately.
The composition of this image brought focus
to the brightest part of the image which wasthe sidewalk when I illustrated it and then after
that the eyes would jump from the building
to the sky immediately after focusing on the
sidewalk. I learned from this photo that I need
to give the image a better identity and show
the exact focus of the picture.

Art Institute of Chicago
First Photo
I liked this photo mostly for its craft with
all of the different showings of color
schemes and the darks in the lights
really bring out whats important in thepicture instead of drawing your inten-
tion all of over the page I work my way
from left to right on it noticing the keys
to it along the way. The concept of this
photo is very dark and very disturbing
in my eyes seeing all of the masked g -
ures and especially the aming giraffe
in the background which really confused
me. The composition of this photo that
I can see is that the artist attempted to
create a dark landscape and portrait
a very dark moment in his/her life or a
dark period in time.Second Photo
I chose this piece of art as one of
my top three because it shocked me
as well with what the artist was able
to accomplish, with all of the death
in the art work to the man alive in
the left side of the work. The craft of
this picture does a great job of utal -
izing the entire piece of work and not
leaving out any information, which
bounces my eyes around everything
in the piece of art. Although I am
initially drawn to the duck because ofthe brightness of it in the art work after
I see that I just jump to everything else
immediatly after. The concept of this
photo in my eyes is that this artist is
portraiting death all around this man
as if he were a dangerous and wealthy
person maybe abusing his power with
all of his food and fruit that makes him
seem as a rich person. So this image
really gives me the idea that this man
was overtaken by his wealth to be-
come very abusive of what is available
to him. Lastly the composition of thisphoto is very blatant with its arrange-
ment of everything that is going on in
the work making all of your focus go to
the dead animals.

Krannert Art MuseumWalking around I
noticed a display case
with twenty sculptures
like this one only 6
inches tall this piece
drew my attention
specically because the
texture and the amount
of detail.The craft of
this sculpture drew myattention because of the
artists ability to show
so much detail in such
a small space show-
ing the lights and dark
with how he carved the
piece. The conceptualpart of this sculpture
showed me was a trav-
eling and depressing
pair of people who look
like they are having a
hard time with there
travel by their facial ex-
pressions. This art was
made in Asia during
the 15th century and i
believe it depicted the
travel and the hardships
of the time, this artistwas able to succelffully
depict that. The Animal
they are riding brought
confusion to me to what
it could be since it look
very unfamiliar but I
wasnt able to discoverthat from the caption for
the sculpture.
This is the rst piece
I noticed this photo at
the Kranert Art Muse-
um in Champaign-Ur-
bana. The Craft of this
photo is what initiallydrew my attention with
all of the bright colors
in it jumping out at
you, and how messy it
initially looks but after
looking at it for a mo-
ment you realize what
is really going on and
I depicted it as a per-
sons view of life with
the drink on the oor
and the light in the air
and the sloppiness of the
picture with the tire being
destroyed on the oor
showed me the Concept
of this photo clearly of a
messy life for the personwho created this piece
of art. The Composition
of this photo used many
different colors but of
the same hue with an
extremely bright colorful
piece of art just drawing
all of your attention to
it with no real place to
focus on, in the picture
you just have to take it all
in at once.
Lastly I found my favorite piece
of art which is the world drawn
with human footprints showing
our footprint in the world as the
signicance of the painting. The
composition of this photo is all
footprints of people just walking
in circles with the paint fading
using just one color, black to
show how strong our footprint
on the Earth has been. The
craft of this piece of art is meantto display the Earth as how we
have made an impact on it in so
many different levels from good
things to bad things humans
have brought to this earth, the
craft is all footprints and nothing
else to put our main focus on
the key part of the artwork the
footprint we have left on earth.
This paintings true signicance
is a strong one with our footpring
on the world from the good to the
bad, from global warming to in-
troducing new and efcient ways
to create energy. Or even the
usage of Nuclear Weapons andthe many oil spills in the oceans
of the world creating our footprin-
gas inhabitants of the world.

Rules with Teapots
For this project there had to be 3 rules th
follow in each of them, the rules I chose
make all of them out of circular strokes,
and all monochromatic with green. The
tion of these projects was to create rules
in all of them to create similarities betwe
the rulesthat I chose which were to use
in the strokes, drawing all types of pots,
using a monochromatic scheme of gree
three greens to display the darks, the lig

SideWalk View
This image wasnt created by me but it drew
my attention very well while going through
the documents from class. I like this image
because of the extremeness of the outline
on the mailbox, on the power lines, and onmany other features in this photo. This il-
lustratino gives a very strong feeling of what
not to focus on as well as what to focus on.
What I focus on this picture immediatly is
the mail box in the very front of it image. ButI am drawn away from multiple features in
this illustration due to the crazyness going
on with in it, such as the sidewalk and the
grass going along the sidewalk as well as
the skky to an extent. I overall enjoy this
image to becausethe exactness and all the
features it brings into it that most illustra-
tions i have seen stray away from bringing
out every aspect of the image while thisone seems to bring out every inch that was
given in the photo that she took. from the
stop sign to the tree line this picture brings
great detail and a felling of scariness and
darkness from the outlines within it.
For this image i wanted to create more of a contrast within the landscape. In the original picture the
sky was one of the objects that did not draw immediate attention so in order to do so i chose to make
the sky the complimentary color of the rest of the landscape so that it would draw more attention from
the viewer.

Bottles
These are three image I cre-
ated using the pen and pad
the above image was my
nal draft of the three. Before
I discus that my rst two
were the ones featured to
the right of the page the rst
one I used all horizontal lines
to illustrate the water bottle I
was drawing. I chose the wa-
ter bottle because it was the
simplest thing I could think
of to depict and would havejust as much detail and light
differences throughout it. In
the horizontal lines image I
used short and long strokes
to create an uneveness
throughout the image. The
nex image I used only verti-
cal lines to depict it which
gave a stronger length to the
water bottle as well as gave
more strength to the curves
in the drawing. I then com-
bined them together to cre-
ate a drawing that used both
vertical along with horizontal
lines to depict the image
most accuratly giving life to
its vertical based features as
well as its horizontal based
features. I learned a lot
from this exercise becauseit showed me what simply
changing the direction of a
line can do for an illustration.
The change of a direction in
a line shows many new fea-
tures that wouldnt have been
seen before. Things such as
the horizontal indents going
across the bottle could
have only been brought out
in the image with horizontal
lines in them. with veritcal
lines I able to accuratly
describe the curvy shape of
the bottle while bringing out
the hieght of it as well while
the horizontal line made
the water bottle seem fat in
a sense the vertical lines
gave it its true shape and
size.

Monochromatic Paint Brush
My illustration of this teapotconsisted of multiple cords
surounding the teapot
while the teapot stand in
the middle. I used three
different shades of green
to illustrate the darks, the
lights, and the area in
between as well. I like this
illustration i made because
I saw it as the rst time I
got closest to perfect with
describing the lights and
the darks with my paint
brush tool in Adobe Il-
lustrater. I used the middle
color as the top layer of the
image, then the darkest
green and in the back ofthe image i put the lightest
shade of green. I was ableto use many diffenerent
stokes to depict this setting
with no real focus on any
part of it. The feeling I get
by the view of this image is
a brightness of the focus on
the teapot but with a very
different surrounding to
show that everything has an
equal share of the viewers
eyes and deserves to come
out in its own way to depitct
that the key focus of this im-
age is to notice everything
going on in it.
The original drawing with lights and darks shown by Blacks and
white with the gray area being the background
The change to a Monochromatic image I changed the colors to the lights and darks to being different
shade of green.

Other Illustrationsof Interest
To evaluate this image It re-
ally makes me think of what
the image is really of and
what is the purpose of it while
using so many different lines
from virtical to horizontal and
even curvy lines to illustrate
multiple different teapots at
the same time. I like how thebackground is just black so
the illustrator can just focus
on the shape and what is
going on in the setting in front
of this person to properly
illustrate it in the future with
the proper lights and darksand the middle area as well.
To evaluate this illustra-
tion I see this as a great
example of doing every
to focus on the shape of
the item to bring out whatit really is ultimatly. This
illustration of an apple
shows that straight lines
can be distorted to make
something entirely differ-
ent to bring out the focus
of any object while showin
the lights and darks still.
I found this illustration aswell that drew my atten-
tion. This is an illustration
of a hat resting on a table.
The hat is described with
mnay variations of lines.
The strokes used are not
even identieable theyare so variated throughout
the illustration. But, what i
immediatly noticed in this
illustration was that the
illustrator outline the hat
before starting it whichmakes me focus more on
the shape of the hat more
than the details within it. I
never really believed that
creating an outline in my
illustrations distorted the
viewers focus so much untili could see it within another
persons illustration. I can
also see in this image that
there is a C on the hat
which is represtented as
an entirely light featurethe hat. I noticed the lig
and darks through out
image being illustrated
black or white in this im
which shows me that th
light focused mostly on
the center of this illstrawhile the darks faded t
brim of the hat and of t
edge
