WelcomeHere we go again, another action packed year ofrunning is upon us. The committee would like towelcome back all KJ's to the new season and alsoextend a special welcome to all our new members. We certainly hope everyone has a great year withthe club and that the KJ's can help you achieveyour running and fitness goals in 2002.

The next 12 months will be an exciting period forthe club. A number of new acquisitions andsponsorships should see us take a quantum leap inthe way we conduct our events. Hopefully youwill see some of these things very soon. In Augustthe spotlight will be on the KJ's when we host theNSW Road Relay Championships here inWollongong. And of course we face the likelyprospect of KJ membership and participationtrends continuing to increase.

Last year's KJ Handbook proved to be a big hitwith lots of positive feedback from clubmembers. Again, with the generous sponsorshipof Rapid Cool Airconditioning we are able to

bring the 2002 edition to you. All the informationyou need on the club should be found in theHandbook so keep it as a handy reference. If forsome reason the information you're after isn'there, don't be afraid to get in contact withsomeone on the KJ committee team who will beonly too happy to help you out.

Finally, please make an effort to support our clubsponsors who give us the resources to make theKJ's such a great club. Without their help wecertainly wouldn't beable to do the things wedo at very little or nocost to members.

All the best in 2002,

Neil Barnett

Race Day InformationParkingParking is limited at many KJ race venuesparticularly at Mt Kembla. The trick is to arrive earlyto secure the best spots. Whatever the case, pleaseensure you park safely and always lock your doors.

Race RegistrationThe Golden Rule - arrive early. We recommendthat you arrive AT LEAST half an hour before thescheduled race start times regardless of whetherthe race is a handicapped or mass start event. Thatway you have plenty of time to warm up andavoid long queues at the race registration tables.

The cutoff time for race registrations is strictly 15minutes before race start time. Runners arrivingafter this time will be started from the backmarkersposition. If you know you are going to arrive latethen it is fine to arrange for someone else to collectyour handicap start time for you. Otherwise let theHandicapper know prior to the event.

Your handicap start time will be issued to you onan adhesive label. Please keep this handy bysticking it to your running shorts etc so that youalways what time you are due to start the race.

Make sure you are fully familiar with the coursebefore each race by checking the course maps etclocated on the Notice Boards and elsewhere in theKJ Handbook.

Warming UpTake care when warming up. The race mayalready be in progress so please keep clear of otherrunners who have set off from earlier handicapstart times. As always watch out for vehiculartraffic. The same road rules apply for warming upas they do during the race - see KJ Race Rules.

Race StartA race briefing will commence 15 minutes beforerace start time. It is important that you are present forthis as information regarding course condition, anylate changes, hazards etc are announced at this time.

A gun will usually be fired about 5 minutes beforethe clock is started and the first runners head off. This should give you an idea when you will bedue on the start line. The gun will also be firedprior to mass start events.

It is always your responsibility to be on the startline at your allocated handicap start time. It isadvisable to be at the start line about 1 minutebefore you are scheduled to start.

ToiletsPermanent toilet facilities are available at allvenues with the exception of Mt Kembla where aPortaloo will usually be provided. Otherwise atMt Kembla you can only use the bushland on thehill on the northern side of Harry Graham Drive. The access agreement with Sydney Water doesnot allow us to use any other area for this purposeincluding any areas along our race routes.

Feeling Unwell? If you are feeling unwell the week prior to anyevent you are best advised to get proper medicaladvice before deciding to compete. There isalways a chance that you might be able to fulfilyour marshalling duty commitments if youcontact the marshal organiser beforehand.

If you begin to feel unwell or become injuredduring an event it is recommended that you stopand advise the next available course marshal whowill then call for assistance on the 2-way radio.

MedicalUpon registration KJ members are invited toinform us of any medical conditions that couldpossibly require treatment as a result of theirrunning activities. This is optional and alldisclosures are kept entirely confidential.

The KJs have a fully equipped andcomprehensive First Aid kit which is available atall KJ events in the vicinity of the start/finish area.Only persons with Senior First Aid qualificationsshould use the kit and a list of names ofauthorised users is provided inside the kit.

Drink plenty of water before every event. Starthydrating early on the day of the event and fromabout one hour before the race is due to begin, take frequent sips of water to maintain fluidlevels. Water stations are provided in all KJWinter Series events longer than 5km.

It is recommended that you don’t eat substantialamounts of food in the 3 hours prior to racing.

The Race Organiser may decide not toallow strollers at these events if conditions on theday are considered unsuitable. Strollers shouldnot be used for racing and must be of a suitabledesign for on-road use, ie fixed wheels and brake.Strollers should start from the back of the field formass starts and from the front for handicap starts.

Race EtiquettePacing other runners in trophy events is generallynot encouraged. Keep smiling and have fun.

Special Events 2002The KJ’s are involved in a number of specialevents throughout the year which have becomekey social as well as competitive occasions. Weencourage all members to get involved and enjoythe camaraderie of these events. Here are a fewyou might like to consider:

Sydney Half MarathonScheduled for Sunday 26th May, the KJ’s will beorganising a bus for those wishing to compete orcheer on the KJ’s from the sidelines. The busleaves very early (usually 4.30am) from WesternSuburbs Leagues Club, Unanderra and returns bymid-afternoon. Following the race you will befree to spend a couple of hours exploring theRocks Markets or perhaps enjoy a counter lunchin one of the nearby historic Pubs. The cost for thebus will be about $15 per person and it is essentialto make an early booking to secure a seat.

City to SurfLike it’s companion event, the City to Surf, onSunday 11th August, is always a most enjoyablesocial day out. The KJ’s again organise a bus to thisone which usually leaves at 6.30am from WesternSuburbs Leagues Club and picks up through thenorthern suburbs. Following the great race you arefree to visit the cake shops, ice-creameries etcalong Bondi’s famous Campbell Parade. Or just dowhat most KJ’s do and partake in the BBQcelebrations on the balcony of the Bondi IcebergsClub overlooking Australia’s most famous stretchof sand. The bus returns mid-afternoon. Againseats go quick so book your place early.

Hopetown RelaysThe KJ’s have developed a proud tradition in thisevent which used to run between Chatswood andWyong. The event now consists of 10 legs either5, 10 or 15km in distance and is held at its newvenue within the Homebush Olympic Park. TheKJ’s enter teams in the State Championshipcategories for both male and female but alsoenters teams in the Running Clubs section. Thismeans that KJ’s of all abilities come along andcompete in one of our many teams. It’s anothergreat social day with much of the time spentcheering on your fellow KJ team members. Thedate for this one is Sunday 8th September.

Club ChallengeNo date has been set for this one yet but is usuallyheld in October. This years hosts are Billy’sBushies from Sutherland. The event attractsrunners from many clubs including WesternDistricts, Sydney Striders, Illawong andCampbelltown Joggers to name a few. The KJ’swon the Challenge for the first time in 1997 andhas claimed the Top 25 Shield for the last 7 yearsrunning. Because every finisher scores points, allKJ’s are urged to turn out en masse to support theClub and the event organisers. A great social BBQis held after the race. Depending on the venue theclub could organise a bus to the Challenge in 2002.

KJ Road RelayThis event has now become a permanent fixtureon the KJ Winter calendar and involves clubmembers forming their own teams of fourrunners. The mix of abilities you can include inthe team is up to you as all teams are handicappedin a similar manner to Winter Series events. Therelays will be held on Sunday 29th Septemberstarting from a new venue in 2002 - Dons Farm,Avondale Rd, West Dapto from 8am. The exactcourse has not yet been devised but will bepublished in a future issue of The Fox. The relaywill finish at the same venue where an informalpresentation of prizes will take place in additionto the usual refreshments. Entry forms will be alsobe included in The Fox later in the season.Enquiries to Ray Wales on 42831148.

The Gong RunThis has offered runners the choice of 2 long runsalong Lake Illawarra’s foreshores: 24km or 31km.It is usually around February - keep your eye onThe Fox for next years date.

Cancer Council 24hr RelayHeld for the first time in 2001 at Beaton Parkthis fantastic community event will once again besupported by KJ teams if repeated again laterthis year.

Handicapping & Pointscore

Q. What is the KJ HandicappingSystem?

The aim of the handicapping system is to placerunners of all abilities on an equal footing in anyKJ race to which it is applied. Before each eventour computer program calculates a handicap timefor each member based on times previouslyrecorded during the current season. Your handicaptime ensures that slower runners than yourself aregiven a head start whilst quicker runners give youa head start. Handicap times are calculated sothat, in theory, all runners should finish preciselyat the same time. This means that regardless ofyour ability you have as much chance of crossingthe finishing line in first place as any other runnerin the club - it just depends on how well you runon the day!

Q. How is my handicap timecalculated?

First, the computer works out your predicted timefor the race, ie the time you are expected to run. This is calculated using the two “best times” youhave recorded during the current season. A timeyou record becomes one of your “best times” if ithappens to be quicker than your predicted timefor that event. These times are then used tocalculate your predicted time in following racesuntil bettered again.

Special scaling factors are used to convert yourpredicted time from one distance to anothertaking into account factors such as distance andcourse difficulty. Your handicap time, ie time youstart the race from, is calculated as it relates to theslowest runner. So if the slowest runner’spredicted time is 56:00 (handicap = 0:00) andyour predicted time is 44:00, then you will have ahandicap time of 12:00. Your handicap time in thefirst 2 events of the season are calculated usingtimes recorded in the previous season.

Q. Joe Bloggs ran a quicker timethan I did in the last race. Why didhe get a head start on me in thenext race?

Although recording a quicker time than you in theprevious race, it is quite possible that Joe, likeyourself, failed to run quicker than his predictedrace time. Even if he did, your “best times”may still be considered quicker than Joe’s.Consequently Joe will still manage to get a headstart on you until he records race times whichmake his predicted time quicker than yours. If youthink that your handicap time is incorrect orunfair feel free to discuss it with the handicapper. But please remember, the handicappers decisionis final.

Q. I have finished near the rear of thefield for a number of races. Why?

It is possible that in some previous race you haverecorded a very respectable time which is nowused to calculate your handicap time. Maybe youare now having trouble retaining this good formor perhaps you have been injured or sick.Whatever the case feel free to discuss it with thehandicapper if it is bothering you

Q. What if I’m returning from illnessor injury?

If you are concerned this will affect your formyou are entitled to apply to the handicapper to berehandicapped until such time that you regainform. However during this time you are notentitled to accumulate race points or win anytrophies based on handicap performance.

Q. Can I run off a different handicaptime if I want to?

As you would expect you are not permitted to runoff an easier handicap than you have been givenbut you are quite welcome to run off a harder oneproviding you advise the handicapper first.

Everything you wanted to know about the Kembla JoggersHandicapping & Pointscore System but were afraid to ask !

Page 33: KJ Handbook 2002 - Kembla Joggers · 2014-04-14 · KJ Contacts 2002/03 All KJ Correspondence to: Kembla Joggers PO Box 527 Dapto NSW 2530 runners@kemblajoggers.org.au President -

Q. Are race times recorded innon-pointscore events usedfor handicapping other races?

No. This includes all alternative shorter races, summer series races, relays, funruns etc. Therefore you can break world records in theseraces if you like without them having any impacton your handicap. Obviously if the only race youhave competed in is one of these events then wewill use that time.

Q. Are all races handicapped? No. Shorter events under 7km and the HalfMarathon are mass start races. The computerprogram later calculates your position as if therace had been handicapped and awards pointsaccordingly.

Q. What if I run much quicker thanI was predicted to do?

A small points penalty deduction may apply tocompetitors who run much quicker than theirpredicted time. The time you do this by before apenalty applies varies with race distance, eg for8km the buffer is usually 2:00. This means if youare predicted to run say 32:00 for 8km, any timeyou record down to 30:00 is without penalty. However a small penalty will apply for timesrecorded by you quicker than 30:00, ie more than2:00 quicker than your predicted time. Thepenalty is deducted from normal points awardedto you for that race.

Q. How do I qualify for trophywinning events?

To win any trophy awarded to first across the lineon handicap in the Hangover Handicap, ACMitchell Memorial or TonyMcMichael Memorial events youmust have competed in at least 3club events during the currentmembership year. This does notapply to trophies awarded to the firstmale and female home such as inthe Half Marathon. Other conditionsmay sometimes apply.

Q. How are points awarded for theClub Pointscore?

Points are awarded on an incremental basisproportional to the number of finishers in eachrace. First across the line on handicap receives250 points and last 50 points. For example, ifthere are 100 finishers, the number of points willdecrease by 2 for each place, ie 1st = 250,2nd = 248, 3rd = 246, and so on. If there are 50finishers points will decrease by 4 for each placeetc. First-time runners are allocated 50 points fortheir first event. Alternative shorter races andrelays are not included in the pointscore. A similarsystem is used for the Junior Pointscore. Elitepointscore points are awarded as follows: 10points (fastest), 9 points (2nd fastest) etc. and1 point (10th fastest).

Q. How many races count towardsthe pointscore?

All pointscore races are used in the provisionalpointscore posted on the club noticeboard at eachevent. The final Winter Pointscore released at theend of the season on Presentation Night isdetermined by eliminating the worst 3 scoringraces for each competitor during the WinterSeries. These can include races where you failedto attend and received no points at all.

Q. Do I receive points for marshallingduties?

Yes. 180 points are awarded for compulsorymarshalling duties.

Q. Where can I check my Pointscoretallies?

All pointscores will be posted on the clubnoticeboards before each race.

Illawarra Regional Athletic Facility - Beaton ParkSome important considerations whenusing the track....1. SupervisionPeople using the facility on a casual basis do sowithout direct supervision from Beaton ParkLeisure Centre Management. 2. Age of UsersAll children under the age of 12 years must beaccompanied and directly supervised by an adultat all times when undertaking track activities.Children who are not training must remainoutside the spectator fence.

3. Lane BarriersAll runners need to be aware that lane barrierswill close off No.1 and 2 lanes completely duringtraining times. This is to preserve the life of theselanes. The lane barriers will only be openedduring competition meets and carnivals.

4. Spikes and starting blocksMaximum allowable spikes for use on the trackare 7mm (9mm for long and high jumps).

Starting blocks can only be used at the100m/200m and 400m start positions and thenonly those blocks provided by the centre.

5. Priority Booking & Lane UseKembla Joggers have a priority track booking onThursday evenings from 6.30-8.00pm. During this

time we have priority use of lanes 1,2,3. KJ's should, therefore, use these lanes for warming up and racing.

At all other times for training use only lanes 1,2,3 forintervals >400m, lanes 4,5,6 for intervals <400m.Refer to the sign at the track for further details onlane use. Please comply with these arrangements, which allows many users to safely train on the track.

6. Track EtiquetteTrack etiquette on training nights demands thatathletes should be aware of other track users.Other athletes may be running fast repetitions inthe same lane and approaching from behind.Always move out when a runner calls out "track".

Any athlete wishing to use the track on any of thefollowing scheduled club competition days, mustfirst obtain permission from the designated club todo so. Athletics Wollongong (Wednesday eveningfrom 5.30-8.30pm), IBS (Sunday afternoons from1.00-5.00pm) & Wollongong Little Athletics(Friday evening from 5.00pm exclusive use).

7. Track SafetyMany athletes from other clubs use the infield forthrowing events. All athletes should make it ahabit to NEVER WALK ACROSS THEINFIELD in either training or to get to the start ofa race. Use the track instead.

8. SpectatorsSpectators must stay off the track and infield areaat all times. Spectators should remain behind thespectator fence or sit in the grandstand facility.

Club TrainingProbably the best way to keep motivated andenjoy your running is to train with other people ofsimilar ability rather than on your own.

The KJs has a number of official training timesduring the week which all members areencouraged to attend. All abilities are catered for.

Many other informal KJ groups run across the

region and perhaps the best way to learn aboutthese is to attend KJ events and socialise withother KJs during the post-race refreshments.

Some of the training sessions are also great socialoccasions, for example many often drop into theMt Kembla Hotel for a few drinks after theweekend runs at Mt Kembla.
