In banking it is Morgan Grenfell, Deutsche Bank, UBS and Lloyds. And Dave Smith has played with them all. Originally from an engineering background he switched to banking and shaped a successful international career, especially in the United Kingdom and Australia. From 2005 to 2009 he was head of the Bank of Scotland Treasury Australia. He was Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Lloyds International from 2009 to 2012, where he had responsibility for 10 countries, 1500 staff and assets of $50 billion. And he is now the CEO of the Australian Rugby League Commission - which manages the NRL. He was appointed in 2012 and took up the role in 2013, replacing David Gallop. In making the appointment, ARLC Chairman John Grant stated: “This is a person who knows business, how to lead, who loves sport, who is culturally suited to our game and who has a very strong sense of community.” Despite all that he actually played rugby in Wales.

Stephen Kearney - Pre-Recorded interview The Kiwis coach has taken the Kiwis to No 1 in the world of league. The former Parramatta Eels boss, and now Brisbane Bron-cos assistant, had a stellar career of his own, as one of the best second-rowers in the world. He was a Junior Kiwi between 1989 and 1991, captaining the side in 1991. In 1993 he was the youngest Kiwis captain ever, at 21. From the early 90s to the mid-2000s there was no more well-known name. After moving to Australia to the Western Suburbs Magpies he returned to New Zealand as an inaugural Auckland Warrior, but in 1998 moved back to Australia to join the Storm, where he won the 1999 Premiership, and the 2000 World Club Challenge As captain of the Storm in 2004, he became the first Kiwi to play 250 Australian first-grade matches. That year he also played his last Kiwis test, a game that saw the debut of Sonny Bill Wil-liams. He finished his playing career with Hull in Europe’s Super League, winning the 2005 Chal-lenge Cup. In 2008 he was appointed Kiwis coach, and with Wayne Bennett led the side to its first World Cup win, beating Australia 34–20. He is so good, he’s even been made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit. He led New Zealand to a second Four Nations championship last year, defeating Australia 22-18 in the final, after having earlier beaten them in pool play. And he of course, added to that, victory in this year’s Anzac Test – three in a row over the old enemy.

Jim Doyle - Vodafone Warriors CEO

Over thirty years international management experience based in Scotland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Originally from Scotland, Jim lived in South Africa for 12 years where he worked in senior management positions before arriving in NZ in Jan 1994. He first joined Alpine Electronics as General Manager before joining Navman in 1997 where he played a major role in growing the company from $3m - $500million, and went on to become Chief Executive of Navman, prior to leaving in 2006 after the company had been sold for more than $100m Through his consulting company he then worked with various businesses providing input into how they can continuously improve all aspects of their organisation. In August 2009 Jim took on the role of CEO - New Zealand Rugby League where he was responsible for re-aligning the sport after it had received a very damning report by Sport New Zea-land with respect to the negative state of the game. This included the implementation and execution of a highly regarded Strategic Plan, and to date the results have seen the sport go from having a dark past, to being held in high regard for its vision, leadership and integrity. After leaving NZRL in Dec 2012 to hand over the reins to a new CEO, he moved to Sydney to take up the role as Chief Operating Officer with the NRL where he gained high regard for his work across the game. He has since returned home to NZ in Nov 2014 to take up the role as Managing Director of the Vodafone Warriors.

Phil Holden - NZRL CEO

NZ Rugby League chief executive Holden was appointed NZRL chief executive in November 2012, replacing Jim Doyle at the helm of the national body. A hockey representative for Southland, Otago, Wellington and Hawke’s Bay, he put his sporting and business expertise to good purpose, as chairman of the Auckland Diamonds netball franchise and marketing manag-er with Auckland Rugby Union. Prior to his arrival at NZRL, Holden’s commercial and executive background included roles in hospitality, beverage, entertainment, sports and gaming sectors, and culminating in a position as chief executive of The Lion Foundation.Heralded as a charismatic, values-based leader, Holden has taken the organisation to the next level, navigating several tricky challenges over his first two years and plotting the course forward through his 2014-2017 “Playbook” strategic plan. A family man, with two young daughters, he is acutely aware of the game’s ability and re-sponsibility to improve the lives of those within its community. But top of his “to do” list is to establish closer working relationships with the NRL and NZ Warriors, as well as secure more international football or New Zealand venues.

Mark Graham

Born in 1955, Mark Graham played his junior football with the Ota-huhu club. In 1980, he led Norths to victory in Brisbane Rugby league premiership grand final, under the coaching of Graham Lowe. The following year he moved to North Sydney Bears, even-tually logging 145 games in the NSW Rugby League Premiership, before spending a season with Wakefield Trinity in England. Graham debuted for New Zealand in 1977, playing 29 tests, including 18 as captain, and scoring seven tries. In 1988, he led the Kiwis to victory of the Great Britain Lions to qualify for the 1985-88 World Cup Final, where they lost to Australia on Eden Park. Graham was an inaugural inductee into the NZRL Legends of League in 1995 and entered the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame the following year. He coached the Auckland Warriors for two season for an 18-30-2 record and later served as defensive coach for the Japanese rugby club side Kintetsu. In 2006, Graham was named in the second row of the North Sydney Bears Team of the Century and in 2007, he was NZ Rugby Leagues Player of the Century.

Martin Devlin - Interviewing Mark Graham and Simon Mannering

Martin Devlin, host of the DRS on Radio Sport, grew up in league town Upper Hutt just a 40/20 from the Tigers ground in Whakatiki Street. Devlin, too slow & skinny to play the game, makes up for it by firing more questions than Mark Graham made hard yards!
