Chairman Ron Miller scheduled the special events to include the program presentation by his min- ister, Rev. Marilyn Moeller, pastor at the New Horizons United Methodist Church. Rev. Moeller recalled her days of service as a Kiwanian in South Dakota and how our dedication to helping children throughout the world is a testimony to the organization’s human and spiritual values. Prior to her remarks, the club’s Hu- man and Spiritual Values Award was presented to this years se- lectee, Dale Metcalf (pictured on the left, along with Chairman Ron). Dale has a long, distinguished record of membership and service as a Kiwanian. He first joined in Kansas and served as president of the Kiwanis club in Fort Scott in 1984-85. He be- came a Columbia Kiwanian in 2003 upon his transfer to Missouri. A member of the First Presbyterian Church, he has served two terms as a ruling elder, chaired the Worship Team and is currently co-moderator of their Mission Team. He and his wife, Kay, were chaperones on one of the youth mission trips to the east coast last summer. Dale serves regularly at the city’s Loaves & Fishes, the church’s Saturday breakfast for the homeless and Room at the Inn for the homeless during the winter. As one of our members stated, “He does this all with a smile”. Congratulations Dale and thanks for all you do for your church, the children and those less fortunate in the community, and especially our club. John & Rod Kelly Baseball Field Dedicated A special afternoon of dedications was held in Douglass Park on Saturday, May 12, as part of the Heritage Day Block Party, which is the unofficial kickoff to summer in the park. The first dedication was the Tapp-Elbert Memo- rial Amphitheater, followed by the dedication of the John and Rod Kelly Baseball Field. Our fellow Kiwanis mem- ber and past club president, Rod Kelly and his brother John (pictured kneeling with his wife Jacqueline) are known as the “baseball brothers” at Douglass Park. Their love of the sport made them instrumental in the formation and development of the Douglass Bulldog Baseball League, which began in 1996. As noted in the press coverage, “They are true leaders and heroes, not only for the community served by Douglass Park, but they are outstanding examples for all of Columbia”. The Columbia Kiwanis Club has been a faithful supporter of the Douglass Park Baseball League for a number of years. The Youth Services Committee has awarded funding requests for needed equipment, scholarship grants and other requested sports play items. Unfortu- nately, Rod is still confronting several health issues and was unable to attend the dedication. We offer our congratulations to John and Rod and wish him im- proving health and a speedy recovery.

Kiwanis Club of Columbia & Kiwanis Club Foundation Board Meeting Minutes May 15, 2018 The meeting was called to order by President Sally Robinson. Other board members who were present: James Powell, Laura Den-eke, Ernest Hilderbrand, Ernie Lee, Charlie Lee, John Haralson and Jack Miles. Dale Metcalf and Greg Jones were present, as well. James Powell sent the minutes of the April board meeting to the board. Ernie Lee moved and Ernest Hilderbrand offered a second to approve the minutes as distributed. The motion passed. Laura Deneke presented the April financial reports of the Club and Foundation, and they were approved without a formal vote. Ernest Hilderbrand pointed out that the income from the Pancake Day and the Harry Potter Trivia Night brought in a total of $5,000 over the income that was expected in the 2017-2018 Foundation budget. With this in mind, Ernest moved that $4,000 be added to the Youth Service Fund budget, and $1,000 be budgeted for Benton’s school startup expenses. Charlie Lee added a second to the motion. The motion was approved. Memorial Trust Fund Treasurer, Dale Metcalf, presented the April report. In April the value of the Fund continued to decline, but the decline was only $590.11, which was a smaller decline than what occurred in the previous two month. Dale indicated that the new management company is charging fees that are similar to the fees charged by the previous management company. The overall value of the Memorial Trust Fund at the end of April stands at $285,022.17. Ernie Lee and Ernest Hilderbrand offered the motion and the second to approve the report. It was approved. Administrative Items: Election of club delegates to the KI Con-vention: Following a motion and a second from Charlie Lee and Laura Deneke, Molly Delgado and Jack Meinzenbach (if Jack plans to attend) were elected to be the convention delegates from our club. It was noted that Molly has already made reservations for travel and lodging for the convention. President’s Topics: June Board Meeting Change: It was noted that the regular third Tuesday board meeting time would be the same day of the Sportsperson of the Year award presentation. A motion was received from Ernie Lee with a second from Jack Miles to set the board meeting on the fourth Tuesday (June 26) instead. The motion passed. Respectfully submitted, James Powell, secretary Next Official Board Meeting: June 26th, 2018, 1:00 p.m.

A Note From President Sally

Wow, only four more months remaining and this Kiwanis year is over! We have made great progress in membership growth, although we could work on our reten-tion. I have noticed several new members have not been in attendance lately. I have tried to reach out to them and let them know they are missed. If someone you sponsored has not been to a club meeting lately, give them a call and let them know they are missed. My favorite time of the Kiwanis year is coming this sum-mer—the Annual Picnic at Kiwanis Park on June 12. This year, we will hear form Mike Snyder, Columbia Parks and Recreation Department, about plans the city has for improve-ments to the park. The Don Faurot Sportsperson of the Year Awards Luncheon is set for June 19. This is always a great celebration. The Youth Services committee has made their selections for organizations to receive money from our fund-raising efforts. We will be seeing and hearing from them throughout the summer. Keep up the good work as we finish this Kiwanis year strong in growth, service and fun! Sally

New Community Service Project

Under the direction of Chairman Leigh Kottwitz, the Community Service committee is exploring new opportunities for club members to be of service to organizations or agencies which help the children in our area. On Monday, May 7, Leigh Kottwitz, Valerie Shaw, Ernest Hilderbrand, Stephanie Webber and Jack Meinzenbach helped sort and display donated clothing and household items in the Salvation Army’s downtown thrift store. The group is pictured during a lighter moment modeling some of the items for sale. One of our new-er members, Carmon Camp, SA Pastor, helped identify the need and arrange the work project. Another new Kiwanian, Linda Schust, di-rector of Jabberwocky Studios, has identi-fied some areas of community service in which our members could become involved with their youth as adult mentors. For ex-ample, there are opportunities to meet with young poetry team members and engage in discussions of your life experiences, which are sure to be different than their own. Al-so, young painters, who will be creating murals this summer through the city’s CARE program, are looking for adult mentors who could spend a little time supporting or even helping with their artistic creations. This is just an FYI tease to start you thinking about some fun (and different) summer community service opportunities. More specif-ic information will be provided during club meetings in the near future.

June 12 Kiwanis

Park

In just two weeks, members, guests and friends will gather at noon in our own Ki-wanis Park for lunch, fellowship and an interesting program about improvements to the park. $10 will get you a delicious BBQ meal. Sign up and see you there!

It’s Tournament Time The stillness of the early spring morning is about to be interrupted by the sounds of golf balls being driven and carts scrambling around the Columbia Country Golf Club course during the 6th annual Kiwanis Golf Tournament. Help is always welcomed, as are spectators. FUN!

Outstanding Douglass H.S. Teachers Honored

This month’s team of teachers were truly sur-prised with the honor and arrived at the meet-ing just a bit late. It seems their administrators may have kept the secret of their selection too secure. Pictured from the left, Karen Cotrell teaches English Language and innovated the teaching of Eng-lish to students new to America. Deborah Minor is the Di-rector of Special Education and the school’s MAC Scholars Chapter. Assistant Principal, Kerry Hesse, praised the pair by saying, “These two teachers epitomize the definition of dedication to their craft. They both go above and beyond on a daily basis to ensure that their students are placed in a po-sition to achieve suc-cess.” Rick McGuire pre-sented the teachers with the club’s cer-tificates of ap-preciation and $50 gift cards.

Aktion Club Enjoys Pizza and Movie Party

Our club’s annual four-month period of supporting the Ak-tion Club ended with a much anticipated pizza and movie party on May 15 at the First Christian Church, downtown. President Sally arranged the meeting and purchased/prepared the assortment of pizzas. She is pictured visiting with their members and assistants as they dined. John Har-alson helped with the set-up and meal service/clean-up.

The Aktion Club president, Rebecca Gingrich, visited our club meeting earlier that day. She is pictured addressing the membership. During her remarks, she told of the various projects their club conducts during the year and also thanked us for our support, both financial and personal. This is a very special Kiwanis club which enjoys coming to meetings and sharing time together with each other. Their enthusi-asm and friendship is contagious. President Sally chairs this sup-port committee and can always use help, as we assume our co-sponsorship role again next February .

Club Provides Breakfast Station

Facing the fact that the breakfast station event of the Mayor’s Bike, Walk and Wheel Week has been rained out two of the past three years, an enthusiastic group of club members gave it one more try early Friday morning, May 18. Leigh Kott-witz coordinated the Kiwanis station at the Garth Trailhead and enjoyed beautiful weather and a near record crowd. Members helping included Jack Meizenbach, Leigh, Sally Robinson, Molly Delgado and Gary Smith.

Interclub Team Heads West in May

It was only a short drive west on I-70 for our team of travelers to visit the Boonville Ki-wanis Club on May 30. Shown ready to depart are James Powell, Leroy Sharp, Charlie Lee and Harold Johnson. Gene

Gerke joined them at the club’s meeting room in the Isle of Capri Casino. The Boonville Kiwanis club is a very active group and home to our current Region II Trustee, Nancy Whalen. The group enjoyed an interesting program and the opportunity to visit with other welcoming Kiwanians.
