LOOK BACK AT 100 YEARS OF KIWANIS: Silver anniversary gift—After three years in the talking, the Kiwanis International Foundation kicked off its fundraising in style during a January 1940 Detroit, Michigan, blizzard at Kiwanis’ 25th anniversary celebration. Past Ontario-Quebec-Maritime District Governor Walter Zeller (far left in cake photo) took the lead, donating 25 Canadian silver dollars, which decorated the gala’s birthday cake. The coins were auctioned to raise a nest egg for the new internatinal foundation. Rather than being served to guests, the five-tiered cake was cut up and delivered to Detroit-area orphanages.

On The Wings Of Service

Poway Kiwanis Club history was made

Sept. 18 when a third generation of a local

family joined the club.

Karin Sherr, the daughter of Patti

Ryder and granddaughter of Cal Pancheri,

joined the 40-year-old service club during

ceremonies held at the club’s monthly night

meeting at Mainstream Bar & Grill.

Sherr is general counsel with the Thomas

Jefferson School of Law in San Diego. She

graduated from Miami University. She is an

award- winning synchronized ice skater (and

is in her university’s Hall of Fame) and now

serves as a skating judge.

She belonged to the Poway High Key

Club and the Circle K in college. She said

during her induction that she always

knew “that Kiwanis would be in my

future.”

Sherr was sponsored by her mom, who

chairs the Kiwanis Club’s foundation.

Ryder was sponsored in 2010 by her father,

Cal who is a 45-year member of Kiwanis.

He transferred to the Poway club in 1999

from the Grantville-Allied Gardens club.

The Poway Kiwanis club has 62 members.

RinginginfundsNapa Kiwanis-Rotary competition rings in nearly $10,000—again.

On The Wings Of Service

The Kiwanis Club of Napa rings the bell for the Salvation Army every year. The club has developed a competition with the city’s noon Rotary club, and the clubs compete against each other to raise the most money.

“Our two clubs meet every year together on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and whoever has lost the competition has to pour wine for the winning club. It has been lots of fun for both the Rotary noon Club and our club,” said Diane Brown of the Kiwanis Club.

“This year Lynn Carriker, Patty Garaventa and I dressed as Christmas trees for our two hour time frame. We did this last year as well and were absolutely amazed at how much money we raised in just two hours.

People want to have their picture taken with us as well as their children and we venture to guess that this year in the two hours we raised between $600-$700 in just two hours,” Brown said.

Club member K.C. Chaudhary every year matches what the club collects on one of the club’s Thursday meetings.

“This year on the designated Thursday we collected $2,650, which K.C. matched, so we raised $5,300 in one day,” Brown said.

“Our club historically collects around $10,000 bell ringing and Rotary does an equal amount. The money our two clubs raise helps the Salvation Army feed the hungry in Napa almost the entire year,” Brown said.

Cal-Nev-Ha District Kiwanis®

PassingsGeorge McDaniel

of the Borrego Springs club passed away Dec. 9. George was a dedicated and longtime Kiwanian (53 years), serving as lieutenant governor three times (1968-1969 for Division 8 and 1991-1992 and 1997-1998 for the former Division 9).

He and his wife, Rosemary, were regular volunteers at the district office for many years during the Mid-Year Conferences and District Conventions.

George celebrated his 90th birthday the day before he died. Also, he and Rosemary would have celebrated 67 years of marriage on Dec. 21.

A memorial service will be planned after the first of the year. More information will be shared when it becomes available.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George’s name towards the Anza Borrego Desert State Park Paleontology Society. Make checks payable to the Anza Borrego Foundation or ABF, PO Box 2001, Borrego Springs, CA 92004 and directed to the Paleontology Program.

Lynn Carriker, Patty Garaventa and Diane Brown dressed as Christmas trees while raising funds for the Salvation Army.

THANK YOU TO THESE $100 SPONSORS OF “THE OBJECTS OF KIWANIS” for 2014-15

The Objects of

KiwanisTo give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.

To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.

To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards.

To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship.

To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities.

To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and good will.

—Adopted unanimously at the1924 Kiwanis International Convention

in Denver, Colo. after Kiwanis President Edmund Arras gave an empassioned speech explaining the

proposed Objects.

During the same convention, the delegates voted to change the organization’s name to simply “Kiwanis International.”
