Meet the Kiwanis International President Tom DeJulio, Kiwanis International President for 2012-2013

Greetings Kiwanians, With the holiday season in full-swing, it’s the perfect op-portunity to pause and "live" the first Object of Kiwanis: to give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than the material values of life. Amidst a bombardment of holiday advertising, with re-tailers vying for your spending on material things to make someone "happy." Kiwanians who live the first Object know this is the season for "giving back"—to im-pact communities in need. My thanks to Kiwanians who are giving back not only to their own communities, but who are also "connecting" to my home district of New York and other areas bombarded by the recent storm disaster. They recognize that all the world's children, and especially vulnerable newborns infected needlessly by tetanus, deserve to live healthy, happy lives. I encourage you to continue your impact on your local and global community this month by living the

first Object. Find those most in need of the light of Kiwanis this season, and give them the inspired gifts of the heart. Then, tell us about it. Email your plans to [email protected]. Rosemary and I wish you a joyous holiday season

In 1966, Tom joined the Key Club of Mount Vernon High School and was later a charter president of the Circle K Club at Fordham University. He became a member of the Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon, New York in 1973 and was distinguished president in 1979-80. He has been a member of the Kiwa-nis Club of Fordham, Bronx, since 1989. Tom earned his juris doctor degree from Fordham School of Law in 1977 and serves as general counsel for Fordham University. He is active in his community, supporting the Boy Scouts of America and the Boys and Girls Club of Mount Vernon. He is the recipient of the Denzel Washington Commu-nity Service award. Tom’s wife of 37 years, Rosemary, holds a Ph.D from Fordham University and is a 1994-95 past dis-tinguished lieutenant governor, serving six years as master instructor and education chair for the New York District.

The New Club Building Initiative by Bob Mitchell, 2012-2013 Governor

The NE-IA District's total membership continues to decline at the rate of about 200 a year. The number one goal for the 2012-13 year is to "strengthen existing clubs and build new clubs," with a sub-goal of "exceeding the new club building average for the last three years." In the last three years there have been a total of three clubs opened in the District. This is not a criticism. It is just a fact. Therefore, if we only build two clubs this year we have met that sub-goal of exceeding the average for the last three years. However, in order to reverse the decline in mem-bership, we need to open a lot more than just two new clubs. In fact, it would take seven new clubs just to break even. So, obviously, membership growth is going to have to come from another sub-goal which is "to increase the number of clubs reaching charter strength of 25 members by 25%." Past District Governor Bob Dunaway is focusing on helping us achieve this sub-goal. He has iden-tified 70 clubs that are currently under 25 mem-bers. If all of these clubs were to achieve 25, we would add another 512 members. All of these new members would then help us offset the number of "member deletes." The goal of "increasing the number of clubs reach-ing charter strength of 25 members by 25%" calcu-lates to having 18 of the 70 clubs under 25 get back to 25. There are 25 clubs between 20 and 24 members. If we just got all of them up to 25, we would add 69 members. Bob has also identified 40 clubs that have grown since 1995. These are "Leader" clubs and we will be examining what they are doing so we can spread the word. In late September we formed the New Club Build-ing Committee, which I am chairing. The members are Past Governors Gus Dornbusch, Ron Petsch, Bob Dunaway, Current Officers Andy Bradley, Ste-ve McNally, Past CLE Chair Irv Omtvedt, and five

Lt. Governors: Donna Ward (16), Steve Green (17), Gretchen Forsell (18), Robin Spaeth (21), and Bill Saxton (22). For purposes of concentrating our efforts, we divid-ed into two sub-committees, one for Iowa and one for Nebraska. We have held several electronic meetings and have identified the following towns as potential sites for a new club. In Iowa, the towns are Grimes, Waukee, Huxley, and Shenandoah. In Nebraska, the towns are Co-lumbus, Nebraska City, David City and Crete. In November we began the process of building a new club in Grimes, Iowa. With the assistance of Jim Rochford, International Trustee and Counselor to the NE-IA District, several of us began recruiting members on November 8 and 9. As of today we have recruited 33 new members in Grimes and have scheduled our Organizational meeting for December 13. The Kiwanis Club of Grimes, while still in the process of chartering, promises to be a very dynamic "difference maker" in the community. As I write this we are also planning the effort to open a new club in Columbus, NE. This would be an additional club to supplement the great work already being done by the Kiwanis Club of Colum-bus. Thanks to the efforts of Dick Breuer, club President (and past Lt. Governor) plans are to meet with some of the dignitar-ies of that community on December 7th to determine the needs a second club might have. We will then begin our recruiting efforts. So stay tuned. Bob Mitchell

The Kiwanis International Foundation offers up to US$5000 in grants for urgent needs in their com-munities. For further information about these grants, please contact the foundation’s Chief Oper-ating Officer Ann Updegraff Spleth. Finally, let's not forget to honor at the appropriate time all the heroes and first responders, especially individual Kiwanians who put themselves at risk to rescue children, provide temporary housing and responded so rapidly to the emergency needs of their community with their equipment, supplies and boots on the ground. There are few precedents in Kiwanis for dealing with the myriad of issues following a disaster of this magnitude crossing so many district boundaries. I ask for your patience and understanding as we identify short and long term needs, with priority giv-en to our Kiwanis-family members directly affected by this natural disaster. I ask for your continued prayers for the victims and for your strong support towards helping the victims of this tragedy. Thank you for living the first and second Objects of Kiwanis.

Hurricane Sandy Donations By Tom DeJulio, KI President

The past weeks have been challenging for Kiwanis communities in the New Jersey, New York, New England, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Capital and Carolinas Districts following Hurri-cane Sandy. This devastating storm frayed nerves, created gas station lines longer than a mile and added thousands to the homeless population. Our hearts break for those families still without power seeking shelter and warmth, and for the children whose health and safety have clearly been placed at risk. Kiwanis International will vigorously pursue the following actions to assist. To help rebuild and demonstrate our solidarity with members of our Kiwanis network of clubs, we designated Novem-ber 27 as “Kiwanis Giving Tuesday.”

If you wish to donate, go to the Kiwanis Interna-tional Foundation website and make a donation of any amount or send a check designated for “Kiwanis Giving Tuesday/Disaster Relief” to the Kiwanis International Foundation, 3636 Woodview Trace, Indianapolis, IN 46268,USA. District governors and their district's leaders in the affected areas will help Kiwanis International iden-tify the needs of Kiwanis family members who have suffered severe losses.

New Kiwanis Club Opening in Grimes, Iowa

from Grimes Times News on November 16, 2012 Bob Mitchell, District Governor of the Nebraska-Iowa District of Kiwanis International and a mem-ber of the Des Moines (Downtown) and Ankeny Kiwanis Clubs, announced that a new Kiwanis Club is coming to Grimes Metro area. Members have been canvassing businesses in the community to sign up interested members. Mitchell said, "Kiwanis has sponsored a Kiwanis Key Club at Dallas Center-Grimes High School for several years with 50-70 members. It's time for an adult Kiwanis club here, one that can mentor the Key Club members as well as make a difference in the community." Our Kiwanis motto is "Serving the Children of the World" and we will be doing so right here in Grimes.

ACE Comes to NE-IA District by Linda Placzek, Master Instructor

On November 17,Nebraska-Iowa Kiwanians were treated to a unique experience. Through the work of Lt. Governor Joe Schmidke, Division 20, Earl Forbes, Kiwanis Area Director for Club Growth, provided the Achieving Club Excellence (ACE) to Kiwanians from across our district.

The session included training for club officers and those who wished to become certified facilitators for our District. Earl Forbes was an awesome presenter; those in attendance engaged in activities throughout the workshop to evaluate their own clubs and build for the future. I believe they would recommend it for every club.

How can you bring this your division? Lt. Gover-nors should contact one of our District’s certified ACE Facilitators to set up the workshop for their division. The names of those trained are: Jane Erickson, Gary Wade, Ron Petsch, Andy Bradley, Pat Checketts, and Shirley Deethardt. Their contact information is available in our 2012-13 District Di-rectory.

Iowa City Kiwanis 25 Year Celebrations By Frank Murphy, District Sec/Treas

On October 30, the Iowa City Kiwanis Club cele-brated 25 year anniversaries for four women who joined Kiwanis in the year following the KI Conven-tion vote which welcomed women as members. Two of the recipients (Lolly Eggers and Marlene Perrin) joined Kiwanis on July 7, 1987 which was the day of the vote at the Kiwanis International Convention. From left to right, the picture includes Bob Mitchell (NE-IA Governor), Joyce Thomas, Lolly Eggers,

On December 1-2, 2013 Key Club conducted a Key Club Midyear Leadership Conference at the Des Moines West Marriott. The conference included multiple workshops where attendees learned 1) how to spice up their meetings, 2) the art of public speaking, 3) how to plan a great Key Club year, 4) keeping members active and retaining members, and 5) K-Family interaction. In the pictures above, the attendees are doing a small group exercise to identify opportunities for Ser-vice Projects, Fund Raising ideas, K-Family interaction opportunities, and possible social activities for Key Clubs. These ideas were combined into a single document for all Key Clubs.

Kiwanis K-Kids Are Keen on Kowker By Lynda Henningsen, K-Kids Administrator

The “K” in K-Kids could stand for Kowker in Belle-vue, Nebraska. During her career, Maureen Kowk-er – “Mrs. K” – taught sixth graders for 37 years. When illness forced her to retire from Wake Robin Elementary School in Bellevue, she had to find an-other outlet for her love of educating kids. Through her Sarpy County Area Kiwanis Club she found the answer. The 71-year-old native Long Is-land New Yorker started helping the K-Kids Club at Bellevue Elementary School nearly four years ago. During those four years, she has developed a love and a passion for her role as the club's Kiwanis Advisor. This year there are 27 fourth, fifth and sixth grade students in the club. “Being my fourth year with K-Kids, I've had some of the students for three years," Maureen said. “We had 100 percent attendance at last week's meet-ing. Feed them and they will come,” she laughed. Faculty Advisor Monica Evans also helps with the club. She added that without the support of Princi-pal Robert Ingram , “We wouldn’t be as successful as we are without his support ." “You can see their growth, because now, I can turn the running of the club meetings over to them. In-stead of me researching service projects, they’re using yellow pages, making phone calls, getting online to websites, they’re finding the answers themselves. And the new kids we get each year are learning from their peers!" “As they grow as young citizens and Kiwanians, their interests and their ideas of what kinds of pro-jects we can do change. They want to do some-thing with the humane society this year. They’re not old enough to [work at] the Nebraska Humane Society, but they have found that Town and Coun-try [Humane Society] in Sarpy County is willing to let them come and do some things. So, they’re thrilled.” The club also has their Memory Support project in which they work with Alzheimer’s patients. “We have a nearby facility called Mable Rose, which is

assisted living with a memory unit. Lisa Summers, their director, is also on the Bellevue Mayor’s Drug Commission with me, so we’ve been working to-gether for two years now." The patients come to the school for rehearsal of their music programs. Our kids are their hosts. The kids greet them at the bus, they walk them in, they hold hands with them. The kids understand, because they’ve been edu-cated by us and by Lisa, who is such a good role model. This year I didn’t have to educate anybody – the older kids educated the new ones. Their first question this year was, “Are we going to work with the Alzheimer’s patients again?’ They are very compassionate.” Maureen said one boy told her, “I know that the lady that I greet and like to walk with doesn’t re-member me. She asks me all the time where she is. One time I was holding her hand, and she said,

‘Is your girlfriend going to get jealous?’ I said no.’ “Bullying was one of our projects last year. We al-so do random acts of kindness. They try to do one once or twice a week, then keep a journal so they can share what they did at meetings." Although her Kiwanis club donates money for the K-Kids projects, Maureen looks for projects that cost little or no money. My goal is to get them in-volved in doing something for others that doesn’t give them anything but an intrinsic reward, like our yearly Christmas cards for deployed soldiers and handmade Valentines for hospitalized vets. The club recently sorted clothes all afternoon at the Open Door Mission. And if one K-Kids Club wasn't enough to keep her busy, Maureen is in the process of developing an-other club, this one at Bertha Barber Elementary, which is also in Bellevue. She currently has 13 kids in the new club and is developing a core group of leaders and is researching possible projects for them. “I sent the kids out to look for projects too, like rak-ing and shoveling. I’m going to try to combine my two groups to do a project or two together. Some of the new K-Kids members joined the Bellevue club kids at the Veteran’s Day parade in Bellevue this year.” Whether it comes to K-Kids or herself, Maureen is a person who believes in service and challenges. As a double leg amputee, she sets an example for everyone around her to keep going, to keep giving your best. About five years ago, doctors discovered cancer in both of her legs, stemming from an autoimmune disorder she has. After “a lot of surgeries” over five years, they had to remove her legs. She put in three stints in rehab and now walks un-aided. She said she used to dress up every day for school, and only wore slacks when she didn’t feel good. Her students asked her why she dressed up. “I told them because I dress every day as if I’m go-ing to a very important meeting with very important people. Young people are my passion. They are our future.” Look who’s calling who “important.” Maureen Kowker is the definition of important to generations of kids, including her beloved K-Kids.

Nevada Key Club Awarded 2012 Outstanding Youth Philanthropist

By Joe Melcher, Regional Trustee The Nevada Key Club was awarded the 2012 Out-standing Youth Philanthropist Award. The Nevada Key Club has exceeded the club's tradition of "helping others above self." The group, under the leadership of Maggie Davis and Judy Strohbehn, has been actively involved with the Nevada School District and community projects for over 10 years. The Key Club has raised over $6,000 to support various projects throughout the Nevada community, throughout surrounding communities and even throughout the world. Projects include Liberia Pro-ject, UNICEF Eliminate, Angel Tree, Festival of Trees and March of Dimes, to name just a few. The Club also uses their philanthropic efforts to support other non-profit organizations in the com-munity including childcare for Kids at First, PTA childcare, Food at First, Community Food Packag-ing for Haiti, Teen Maze and the GRIP Mentoring Program. The role this group of young adults has taken in helping others is evident with over 700 hours of vol-unteer time donated to various groups and organi-zations. We salute the members of the Nevada Key Club for their time, talent and giving to others. Their efforts make Nevada and our surrounding communities a better place to live. In accepting the award, president Erik Schaeffer spoke great words.; "Philanthropy is important to Key Club as a whole because we, in the words of our pledge, serve our home, school, and communi-ty. Through our service, we encourage leading by ex-ample, meeting new people, and feeling good about our actions and ourselves. In addition, volun-teering through Key Club builds gratitude and thankfulness for what we have.”

The end of this one disease means the beginning of better health for so many families.
