American Eel to become a SARA species
Head’s up!
The federal government is considering listing the American Eel as a threatened speciesin the Species At Risk Act (SARA). This is a great step forward to help protect eelpopulations that are in danger of becoming extinct.
What is SARA?
The Species At Risk Act is the federal list of endangered, threatened, and special concernspecies for all of Canada. Species on this list receive more funding for research andconservation projects, and federal protections are put in place to safeguard populations.
Why are eels being considered?
American Eels have experienced dramatic population declines in Lake Ontario and the UpperSt. Lawrence River (65% decrease over 14 years or 3 generations of eels).
This is due to habitat fragmentation by dams and other barriers in rivers, which limit theavailability of breeding grounds if there is no fish passage (eel ladder) installed in the dam.Other factors such as commercial fisheries and water contaminants are also important threats.
What does that mean for me?
We at the Natural Resource and Wildlife Department just wanted to keep you up to date onSpecies at Risk news, especially positive things like increased protection for wildlife.
If you have any information about the American Eel you would like to share with us(cultural importance, memories of past eel abundance, etc). Please let us know!
Scientific importance is only one side of the story—the social and cultural value of theAmerican Eel is also important to consider in the fight to protect this species.
