Traditional kitcheTraditional kitcheMARKET INSIGHTWith the traditional kitchen marketgrowing, what new trends areemerging?“The recent trend for a return to

traditional design shows no sign of

abating. Magazines and TV programmes

dedicated to the home show classical and

romantic room sets almost as often as

highly contemporary ones. I think that this

is the key, if manufacturers can supply

products that have a ‘classical’ feel to

them, it doesn’t necessarily have to be

traditional in the true sense of the word,

then they will do well. Classic feels ‘classy’

and timeless and they have broad appeal

even to consumers with a ‘modern’ style.

We have noticed a definite shift towards

our more traditional accessories and I

believe this has been emulated in all

aspects of kitchen design. Large

farmhouse appliances, stately cabinetry

and period-style brassware in classic

finishes, like English Bronze and Natural

Brass remain very much on trend.

Features such as crosshead handles and

bridge mounted designs with intricate

detailing are indicative of a return to

classic shapes; homeowners love this style

as it conjures up a feeling of luxury.

Porcelain handles add to this effect,

though ranges that offer a choice of

finishes are also incredibly popular as

consumers want more for their money

and like to customise their chosen

products to exact requirements.”

David Cole -

Sales Director, Perrin & Rowe.

How do you see the marketdeveloping in the coming years?“With our love of open plan living, it is

unlikely that we will see a return to the

very traditional kitchen, separated from

the rest of the house, any time soon.

“Design confidence and our quest for

the feel-good factor is the inspiration.

Perhaps for the first time, kitchens are

designed to meet the expectation of the

consumer, a giant step away from

manufacturers dictating the latest trend

and forcing consumers to choose between

contemporary or classical. It’s a

traditional model and one that will soon

play a very small role in kitchen design.

“Narrowing the gap between the two

design camps has been a long time

coming. On one hand the popularity of

dramas such as Downton Abbey has

increased our desire to recreate a sense

of tradition. On the other, our insatiable

desire for design via websites such as

Pinterest and Houzz has seen a jump in

consumer expectation for contemporary

design in traditional settings. This has

resulted in kitchen design that

encapsulates the love of contemporary

and classic by creating the perfect unity. I

have no doubt that the traditional kitchen

will continue in popularity but not in any

way that we have seen before.”

Managing Director,

InHouse Inspired Room Design.

GermantraditionWhen you think of traditional kitchens, German design may notbe the first thing that comes to mind, but maybe it should be.

An estimated 57,000 German

kitchens were sold in 2014, even

more impressive when you discover

this outstrips 2013 by an outstanding 32%.

With the sales of traditional kitchens

catching up with contemporary designs, it is

critical for UK retailers to take a more

contemporary view on traditional kitchens.

The benefits of modern design and the

beauty of traditional are top of the list for

today’s consumers - from the muted

colours of a more historic palette across

contemporary finishes, to high-end internal

storage options and contemporary lighting.

Equally important is the expectation for

high standards and affordability. Many

manufacturers struggle to achieve this

combination but it is the benchmark of

German manufacturer, Schüller.

Wayne Dance, MD of InHouse, the

UK’s exclusive Schüller distributor, explains,

“Today’s consumers are not slaves to

tradition. They want high tech, low

maintenance finishes, highest standards, a

multitude of creative solutions, all hidden

behind designs that create a sense of

tradition, history and wholesomeness.”

The traditional ranges in the schüller.C

collection embrace some of the typical

British styling such as T&G effect doors,

Shaker doors, Pilasters, traditional plate

racks, scalloped plinths, T&G carcass sides,

T&G back panels and cladding. All

manufactured in typical German precision

to give the traditional British look the stamp

of German quality.

Wayne adds, “Schüller’s affordability

combined with precision German

engineering has taken the traditional

kitchen to an entirely different level. With

traditional kitchen ranges from Schüller,

today’s retailer can look to the future and

expect unequalled support from the

dedicated InHouse team.”

Space-savingsolutions forcompact kitchens.

MARKET INSIGHTHow has the market for space-savingkitchens performed year-on-year?“With a definite increase in new builds there

has been an increased volume demand for

space-saving kitchens especially within the

apartment market. With open plan living the

trend, it requires the kitchen area within this

set up to be more compact but still with a

desirable look. I would say that builders

now look closer at the content, quality and

design of the kitchen to ensure they are

providing the end user with an attractive

kitchen offering within the full property

package and this has generally led to a

higher average spend.”

Gordon Boyd -

Area Sales Manager Northern Region,

Nolte Küchen UK.

How can compact kitchen appliancesbe designed successfully withoutlosing their functionality?“Compact kitchen appliances enable the

homeowner to extend their range of

appliance options with far greater flexibility -

a compact appliance can have more than

one main function - for example, a

microwave which is also a conventional oven

and grill in one. The consumer can create a

wall of these built-in appliances, which sit

together perfectly and will provide incredible

versatility in the kitchen with, for example, a

coffee machine, steam oven and microwave.

When a collection of appliances is placed in

a group, they will save the user time as they

are positioned together, ultimately save

space in the kitchen and provide a sleek,

modern finish.”

Danny Lay -

Sales Director, Caple.

What advice do you have forretailers looking to sell compactkitchen solutions?“Retailers can maximise sales of these

compact products by highlighting them in

their displays and demonstrating how they

work in the showroom. Although many

displays will be spacious, it is worth

showcasing what can be achieved in a

small kitchen space. As ever, it is worth

taking the time to understand the

consumer’s needs, the space available in

their kitchen and how they use the kitchen on

a day-to-day basis. Often those with smaller

kitchen environments may not think they

have room for a dishwasher for example,

however, by showing consumers the latest

innovations, you can help to save them a lot

of time and energy and secure a sale.”

Maurizio Severgnini -

Managing Director,

Built in Division of Hoover Candy UK.

What are your predictions for themarket going forward?“The market will have to provide different

solutions for all the various situations

modern life brings with it, such as smaller

apartments and increased living costs.

Kitchens and kitchen furniture will have to

be flexible, make use of the latest

technology available and be open for

individual demands. The wider the range,

the better. And, with a focus on functionality

combined with flexibility, attractive,

comfortable designs can be available

regardless of the room size. “

MARKET INSIGHTHow is the market for hobs and hoodsperforming?“With Britain’s longest recession officially

over and the lowest interest rates in modern

times, there is certainly a rise in consumer

confidence and a buoyancy and positivity

and with economic climate suggesting

greater disposable income during 2015.

“GfK reports very positive results for built

in appliances with an uplift in total sales

across all categories for Jan-Dec 2014

versus Jan-Dec 2013. For built-in cooking

value has increased by +9 percent and in

built-in hobs +7 percent for the period.”

Neil Austin -

Trade Marketing Manager, Whirlpool UK.

What hobs are proving most popularin the UK?“Induction has seen a real growth in sales as

consumers begin to appreciate the

tremendous efficiency, speed, safety,

controllability and economical cooking on

offer. Gas has remained the traditional

consumer choice for many years, adding a

certain flamboyance to the self-professed

cook; however, as consumers become

increasingly aware of energy efficiency and

an environmentally friendly alternative,

induction is mounting a strong challenge.

“GfK reports that induction hobs make

up over a third (34 percent) of market value,

and year on year there is 15 percent greater

volume. The consumer is finally beginning to

understand the excellent energy saving

benefits induction hobs offer alongside their

ease of use, controllability and safety.”

Neil Austin -

Trade Marketing Manager, Whirlpool UK.

Focusing on professional appliances, what are the latest functions to beincluded?“Combination induction and gas wok hobs

are one of the latest developments to have

reached the luxury kitchen market, which

enable the user to choose whichever style of

cooking they require on the same platform

according to the dish they are cooking. Gas-

on-glass versions are popular but a stainless

steel finish will provide a professional chef

touch to the kitchen. Touch controls have

reached gas-on-glass hobs - initially used on

induction hob design - for a more user-

friendly method of cooking with a nine-level

digital power display for each zone.

“With electric, induction is the latest

development with automatic functions such

as power boosts on induction hobs and

pause controls, which allow the user a short

break of up to ten minutes. Induction is ideal

for those who are more safety conscious as

the only area which will heat up, when

switched on, is under the pan. Multi-split

zone induction hobs are a great invention

where the user can cook practically

anywhere on the surface within the hob zone

boundaries and this can work whether there

are four pans or one extra large pot.

“With electric ceramic, dual zones allow

the user to operate an inner zone within the

main ring, which will save energy when

cooking with smaller pans or expand to

accommodate larger pans.”

Danny Lay -

Sales Director, Caple.

When you think of industrial design,

you wouldn’t be alone if you were to

think of cold, clinical decors but this

year’s Interzum exhibition in Cologne turned

this perception on its head, proving that design

is never simply black and white.

There was a common theme amongst the

1,561 exhibitors of 2015. The halls were no

longer a wash of white; instead they were

brimming with warm and inviting metallic

shades. Cold, crisp hues and yellow tones were

replaced with a plethora of rich golds,

sumptuous browns and deep, dark bronze.

Think back to Interzum 2013 and its main

talking point was texture. Deep saw cuts,

distressed wood grains and unpredictable

patterns were order of the day. This year,

texture has been reworked. Designs have

mellowed and diversified to include more

disciplined patterns, light planking and

authentic, uncomplicated natural wood shades.

Whilst not a new concept in the furniture

industry, inspiration from the textile industry

has resulted in the current desire for subtle

textures. From woven wool, weaves and cross

stitch to warm denim and distressed leather,

refined textures are collaborating with the iron,

copper and steel effects which were starting to

emerge at Interzum two years ago, to create

an extra dimension to their design.

Continuing the trend further, component

manufacturers are producing handles, hinges

and runners in stylish metallic and matt

finishes. Elegant in appearance, there is a hint

of romanticism in the latest designs as subtle

curves and warming tones replace traditional,

robotic concepts.

“We ask our customers to feel our

designs,” explains Union Knopf’s handle

expert, Roland Nöth. “Sometimes simply using

your senses to feel and look closely at each of

our designs is more effective than us talking

you through the concept. It’s this interaction

and emotional reaction that allows us to gauge

a response to our prototypes.”

Could this be why the halls were not awash

with gloss this year? Jennifer Neale, European

Marketing Communications Manager for the

Formica Group, predicts this is not necessarily

the case. “There will always be a place for

gloss,” admits Jennifer. “But don’t be fooled.

Colours with depth or the perception of texture

are taking over from the high-shine whites and

creams that prove popular in the UK.” Jennifer

adds, “Today, it’s all about matt metallics and

inspiring textures and we’re confident these

trends will remain strong in the coming years.”

The next Interzum will take place in

Cologne on the 16th-19th of May 2017. K&BJ

will be there, will you?

DenimDécors

The Formica Group, which displayed

several new ranges of decorative surfacing

solutions at the exhibition in Cologne, put

its emphasis on natural and man-made materials

and fabrics by introducing metal, engineered

stone patterns, marble and textile finishes to its

range of decors.

New DecoMetal® decors were shown for the

first time using Woven™ and Hammered™

textures, whilst its Denim Twill multi-colour weave

design was created using a real pair of blue

jeans. Four new decors - Elemental Concrete,

Elemental Ash, Elemental Corten and Elemental

Graphite - were introduced to mimic rusted,

oxidized metals and modern interiors, supporting

the trend for industrial and urban aesthetics.

Designed to showcase masculine interior design

at its best, each textured décor has been created

to add an extra dimension to design and, by

doing so, bring the surface to life.

Sycamore’s wireless zonal control systemallows any of its 12v LED products to becontrolled simultaneously.

A fully equipped design departmentmasterminds future developments.

Sycamore’s top of the rangeoperational laboratory.

For over 15 years,Sycamore Lighting hasbeen at the forefront ofinnovation thanks to its

continual investment andcommitment to design

and technology.

Established in 1998, our dedication to

quality has resulted in sustained growth

by offering a diverse range of lighting

and the very latest in technology,” begins

Gary Wilson, Sycamore’s Sales Director.

Major investment in new technologies,

personnel, and a state of the art testing and

training facilities has enabled Sycamore to

cross over into different market sectors, whilst

retaining its reputation as a major lighting

supplier of lighting and control systems

throughout the UK and Europe.

“We are committed to providing our

customers with the very latest in LED

technologies, and continually look to source

innovative and energy efficient new products

to add to our portfolio. We have a huge

collection of lighting solutions for the kitchen,

bedroom and bathroom, including the latest

lighting control systems,” adds Gary.

Its wireless zonal control system is a great

example of this. Gary explains, “It allows any

of our 12v LED products to be controlled

simultaneously in up to four separate areas,

therefore under, over, plinth and any island

lighting can be switched and dimmed together

or independently of each other if required. By

adding a Wi-Fi module and downloading

Sycamore’s free App, the whole system can be

controlled using a smart phone or tablet. All

the units required are pre-wired and

compatible with Sycamore Lighting’s plug and

play system, keeping installation time and

costs to a minimum.”

The company’s dedicated technical and

design team are also on hand to answer any

technical queries customers may have on any

aspect of their lighting requirements. Its

knowledgeable team - which have a wealth of

experience in the lighting industry - can assist

with lighting plans, offer advice on lighting

schemes, and manage lighting control system

plans from start to finish.

Gary adds, “We have invested heavily in

our top of the range operational laboratory,

and have employed a qualified electronics

expert, which enables us to offer consistency of

such information for all the lighting products

within our range. The latest piece of

equipment on site is the Gonio-Spectro-

radiometer. It is currently the most up to date

machine of its kind within the UK and will help

us to develop exciting new lighting solutions

well into the future.”

MARKET INSIGHTHow is the shower trays and walk-inenclosure market performing?“The market for trays and enclosures has

seen a positive uptake over the last 12-15

months. This is in line with the positivity that

has come from the increase in house

building, which has a positive and very direct

knock on to RMI as people move through the

chain and wish to update their new house.

Likewise, the overall economic feel-good

factor has benefited the sector, with people

reinvesting in their properties off the back of

increasing house prices and more all-round

financial confidence.

“Despite increased demand, pricing is

still under pressure as we come off the back

of a recession. It seems the last five years

has increased online comparison, which has

changed the way many of us look at

products and prices. Whilst it is not always

about the cheapest, people, be it consumers

or trade, are certainly looking to get the

value for their pound wanting excellent

quality at reasonable prices.”

John Schofield -

Sales and Marketing Director, JT

What trends are proving most popularin the style stakes?“Traditionally, 760mm square shower trays

with simple shower enclosures dominated

the market but now we see larger enclosures

and sophisticated walk-in showers becoming

increasingly popular. Today, attitudes to

bathrooms have changed and as consumers

become better informed, the demand for

luxurious bathroom and shower sanctuaries

as statement pieces has risen. There’s also

an element of practicality at work; when it

comes to fitting a bathroom into a small

space or a home conversion, walk-in

showers provide a viable option without

compromising on style or quality. To get that

true walk-in feeling you find the application

of floor to ceiling tiling is favoured over the

presence of shower trays.”

Mar Esteve Cortes -

Marketing Project Manager, TheSize.

What are your predictions for themarket going forward?“New shapes and designs of shower trays

and enclosures will continue to be

developed. We expect this market to

continue growing and for manufacturers and

designers to develop low profile trays which

offer more design options, to suit different

tastes and bathroom styles.

“Water integrity is becoming more and

more important in wetrooms as consumers

are more experienced. Therefore return

panels and mini fixed panels are becoming

a must when purchasing a wetroom panel.

The true wetroom market is relatively small,

the simulated wetroom and low level tray is

the UK norm and will continue to be so.”

David Osborne -

Managing Director, Roman.

Proving that any design ispossible, stone specialistLapicida is shaping itsfuture with artisancraftsmanship andadvanced technologies.

luxury bathrooms..

Highly practical and supremely decorative,

stone is the perfect bathroom material,”

begins Jason Cherrington, Director of

Lapicida. With over 30 years of experience

working with natural stone, Lapicida has built its

reputation on creating intricate, hand-finished

products for the interior design market.

Known for its elaborate projects and close

relationships with well-known international

designers, Lapicida’s latest bathroom concepts

combine materials and contrasting colours to

dramatic effect. Here, the use of Hanover

limestone mosaic - which clads the curved wall

- frames a luxurious egg bath, which is carved

from a solid block of matching limestone. To

create a subtle monochromatic effect, the basin

and bathroom floor have also been designed

using the same material.

The bespoke design also focuses on bold

feature walls that form a counterpoint, defining

the shower and flanking the long basin. A rich

brown and silver-toned Iranian Travertine has

also been used to introduce visual warmth and

further decorative detailing to the design.

“The stone has been vein-cut down through

the block to reveal its ancient layers and infinite

tonal variations,” explains Jason. “This effect,

partnered with a variety of different textures -

from matt to highly polished - introduces yet

another level of interest to the luxury bathroom.”

“Light is the natural partner to stone, bringing

natural colours and character to life,” says Jason.

Here, the lighting designer has diffused the

illuminations so that they wash the stone walls

and floor with light. A sophisticated control system

allows the mood to be changed at will, whilst

underfloor heating reinforces the sensory pleasure

of this bathroom, making the complete look and

feel of the bathroom utterly luxurious.

Jason adds, “With our ability to create

bespoke designs, decorative schemes can be as

simple or as ornate as the customer desires.

From luxury stone for walls and floors to

freestanding pieces, we are proud to say that

everything we create is entirely unique and

exclusively made for our customers.”

The London concept storeoffers a great insight intoTOTO’s product range.

It was over 100 years ago that the founder of

TOTO, Kazuchika Okura, began to challenge

the notion of cleanliness. With sanitary ceramics

becoming commonplace in Europe and America,

Kazuchika developed a range of bathroom

products that would shape the bathroom industry.

With a production line for metal fittings, taps

and ceramics in full swing by 1946 and its first

overseas factory opening in 1977, it was only three

years later that TOTO introduced the world’s first

integrated bidet toilet and the company’s focus on

innovation and technology was born.

Today - employing 24,00 people worldwide -

the sanitaryware manufacturer is celebrating its

London concept store’s 5th birthday. Now, after

finding a firm footing in Europe, the Japanese

company is pushing the boundaries of Clean

Technology in the UK.

“European manufacturers have begun to adopt

technologies such as automated flushing and

hands-free operation, expanding the shower toilet

market,” explains Sohei Nishida, TOTO UK’s

General Manager. “Toilet technology is becoming

much more mainstream in the UK. Over the last 5

years we’ve discovered - thanks to our strong

relationship with our UK retailers and collaboration

with European designers - that shower-toilet

consumer trends tend to come from the hotel

market, whereby well travelled guests experience

the benefits of our Washlet and want to replicate

this within their own home.”

TOTO’s latest innovation - which was launched

at ISH 2015 - is the new CF Series. The CF Washlet

seat attachment offers an adjustable wand jet

system, programmable heated seat and has the

advantage of fitting on many conventional toilet

models, whilst the CF WC includes an adjustable

warm air dryer, deodoriser and PreMist feature.

Developments such as these continue to see the

forward-thinking company offer a comprehensive

collection of ceramic sanitaryware, taps, furniture

and accessories.

Sohei adds, “Just as technology has

revolutionised every aspect of contemporary life,

TOTO’s innovations are changing the way people

use their bathrooms. We’re embracing technology

in the pursuit of cleanliness. And, as the company

advances into Europe, our historical philosophy of

Clean Technology will remain the company’s

guiding principle.”

The new CF Series waslaunched at ISH 2015 and

includes washbasins,WASHLET and WC.

TOTO employs 24,000people worldwide.

A Polish businessmanwith a background in

material engineering,Pawel Grochowski is theowner of new bathroom

concept, MyBath.

Bold, beautiful and refreshingly different,

MyBath has created an eye-catching range

of bathroom furniture that is sure to satisfy

the steeliest designer’s desire for all things

contemporary.

Grabbing the headlines at ISH 2015 for its

unique take on design, MyBath is preparing to

take its first, tentative steps into the UK bathroom

market, with new product ranges launching soon.

“Our products aren’t your typical bathroom

fixtures,” explains Pawel Grochowski, founder of

MyBath. “From the very beginning, it was

important for us to create unique products that

did not already exist in the marketplace. We

wanted to be different and thanks to a diverse

mix of designers and our partnerships with

DuPont™ Corian®, we have achieved this.”

What started out as a concept project in

Poland, showcasing the flexibility of Corian®, has

resulted in the company entering international

markets with its eclectic designs. 3D modelling,

curves, protruding angles and forms reflecting

nature are created using DuPont™ Corian® and

sculptured by MyBath designers. Pawel explains,

“To me, Corian® is an empty canvas. Anything

can be achieved and no design idea should be

seen as impossible. I’m confident these designs

will be welcomed in the UK.”

Keen to promote its product lines further,

MyBath is in the process of securing its place at

several UK-based trade fairs in the next 12

months. And, with its sights firmly set on building

a sales network in the UK, the search is on to find

new and enthusiastic UK trade partners.

Above. The nature of the Levels design isambiguous. It features hidden drawers,

stainless steel towel rail and a mounted mirror.

Right. The Bucket & Spoon design, which ismade from Corian®, was inspired by

traditional wooden tableware.

Let the celebrationsbegin as Vogue (UK)turns twenty-five.

The Regency is manufactured from brass or mildsteel tube, available in various widths and is suitablefor closed indirect systems. Available in dual fuel orelectric versions only.

Be Inspired. Towel warmer manufacturer Vogue (UK)shows its pride of the anniversary with a new logo.

The Binary offers a practical solutionallowing towels to be rolled, stacked or

hung and in turn, kept warm and dry.

Manufactured from mild steel, theHarmonique is suitable for closedindirect heating systems and is availablein convector radiator options.

Leading towel warmer manufacturer Vogue

(UK) is proud to be celebrating its 25th

Anniversary. And, as it gets ready to

launch a brand new full-colour brochure and put

the finishing touches to a number of up and

coming initiatives and collaborations to celebrate

this impressive milestone, there’s no sign of the

Willenhall-based company slowing down.

Founded in 1990, Vogue (UK) has become a

recognisable name in the industry and a market

leader in its own right thanks to forward-thinking

designs and manufacturing capabilities. Its West

Midlands factory is one of only a handful of

factories in the UK still manufacturing

contemporary and traditional towel warmer and

design radiators. Its skilled craftsmen enable the

brand to handcraft many of its products in-house,

whilst its British manufacturing facility allows for

the development of new manufacturing

techniques, materials and finishes. The result:

advanced, design-led towel warmers and

radiators designed and manufactured in the UK

for the UK market.

The company also offers a bespoke service,

allowing many towel warmers and design

radiators to be tailored to suit individual needs

and requirements. This continual development,

plus its passion to push the boundaries of

bathroom design has resulted in the company’s

success and 25 years at the top.

Steve Birch, Sales Director at Vogue (UK),

comments, “Everyone at Vogue (UK) is extremely

proud to celebrate reaching this milestone and I

would like to take this opportunity on behalf of

the team to thank everyone who has supported

us over the last 25 years; we owe a great deal to

them, and of course to all our many customers.”

He adds, “Here’s to the next 25 years!”

Thinking ahead...MARKET INSIGHTIn today’s market, what are consumerswith disabilities looking for?“Rather than having a standard wetroom,

consumers are increasingly looking to add a

more personal touch to the bathroom and to

escape the stigma of a bathroom that feels

‘disabled’. Colour is making its way into the

traditional accessible bathroom as people

strive to create a space to be proud and

inclusive for all the family. We are now

seeing a number of ranges that have the look

and feel of a designer bathroom, with the

benefits of a healthcare showering facility.”

John Blackburn -

Group Managing Director,

The Coram Group.

How do you test how functional a newproduct would be for someone with adisability?“Some of the HEWI team are from a

professional Healthcare background, where

their personal experiences can be invaluable.

We also liaise with Occupational Therapists,

access consultants and care organisations to

ensure that our Product Innovations team are

developing new solutions which will work for

a wide variety of individuals. We believe that

this is vital to our wider development

programme. Equally important is the training

we provide to our staff and partners which

can include anything from market

intelligence to our specialist Body Simulation

Suit - which can transform into a user with

disabilities, including sight conditions and

limited mobility. Using the suit for some time

simply accelerates the understanding of

what’s required to make showering and

transferring safer and easier.”

Stephen Maley -

UK Sales Director, Hewi UK.

What advances are proving popular inthe market?“Products that are designed for ease of use

for all thanks to its technology are in

demand. Some manufacturers offer

technology that allows for easy and smooth

mixer handle operation, while installing a

digital mixer often means that a handle is not

needed at all to turn on the product. The flow

of water can be simply controlled by a touch

of a button. Some product lines feature cool-

to-the-touch technology, which means that

there is no scalding on hot surfaces - perfect

for vulnerable individuals. Popular products

also feature multiple innovative spray

patterns which can be mixed to suit an

individual’s needs.”

Michael Gray -

Training Manager, GROHE UK.

How has the market evolved in thelast five years and what are yourpredictions for the market goingforward?“In the past 5 years we’ve seen a small

glimpse of the predicted ageing population

increase across Europe within the private

market, however the publically-funded

wetroom adaptation market remains static as

funding is still a major hurdle. Going forward,

we will see an increase for more innovation,

truly ‘inclusive’ products and an increase in

the use of integrated technology. The gap

between customers and manufacturers will

close and the way brands communicate will

leap forward, embracing more mainstream

digital methods we see today.”

Pillow ttalk… Create a sense of calm with thelatest bedroom trends.

Caryn Wingrave-Newell, Senior Designer at JohnLewis of Hungerford, talks bedrooms.

Many people are looking for a calm, simple and

well-ordered space where everything has a

place and the storage is hidden away. This

sounds rather clinical but when you combine handsome

cabinetry, beautiful paint finishes and luxurious fabrics it

creates a serene space in which to relax.

“Textures and materials are very important. Warm

neutral tones with simple cabinetry to create a soft

backdrop for patterned textiles remain popular.

“The only gadgets we are asked to incorporate into

bedrooms tend to be good lighting: discreet lighting on

motion sensors and mood lighting play a key role in the

modern bedroom. For the music or news aficionados it’s

worth incorporating a small discreet music system on

which to play some soothing tunes in the evening - or

rousing music to get you up in the morning!

“Everyone loves the idea of a walk-in dressing room:

a small room with open wardrobes so everything is easy

to find. If you’re not prepared to lose a valuable

bedroom, this can still be surprisingly achievable in a

large room where a corner can be partitioned off, or as

a throughway into an ensuite bathroom.

“In general, clients are looking for a calm, well-

ordered space separate from the rest of the house in

which to wind down at the end of the day. Some clients

will incorporate a small chaise or armchair as an

escape. The trend for baths or showers in the bedroom

has long gone, but even a small ensuite can create a

sense of tranquillity and seclusion after a busy day.”

Lunar is the matt painted range from Symphony. Offering aclean, crisp look in a range of natural tones, it reflects the

trend for earthy palettes. Surrounded by subtly contrasting glossframes, it is partnered with wall hung matching ensuite units.

As a manufacturer of kitchen and bedroom doors, BA

Components knew it made sense to launch its first sliding

door range, Glidor, to the UK market this year.

“In the last 10 years, the UK home has shrunk by two square

metres and with this comes a growing demand for better storage

solutions,” explains David Caulfield, BA’s Sales and Marketing

Director. David explains, “One in five homes are being modified

to create more space due to over crowding and more

possessions, so with this in mind BA Components want to make

lives a bit easier with Glidor.”

Custom made and manufactured within eight days, the

sliding door range is available in three options - Urban, Ultra

and Unique. Urban, which is an MFC brand that is new to the

door manufacturer, comprises of ten 18mm Egger colours -

including Alabaster, Cashmere, Coco Bolo and White Swiss

Larch - which are available in four different panel combinations.

The Ultra option offers ultra gloss and matt designs finished in

Senoplast Acrylic, PET, PVC and lacquered colours, whilst the

Unique range offers thirty-three Bella 18mm vinyl wrapped

colours and five distinctive door styles, giving you full control of

your design.

“The range is very flexible and can be used in the bedroom,

home office and general living areas,” explains David. “With

over 60 colours to choose from, you really can create your

perfect design with ease. We have a lot of loyal bedroom

dealers and we listen to their opinions. They’ve asked us for a

sliding solution to complete the BA Bedroom offer. The result is

the innovative Glidor. It really does tick all the boxes.”

BA launches its first made to measuresliding door, the Glidor.
