when we fIrst started neptune In 1996 It was In a farm

workshop in wiltshire with a small team of very dedicated (and dusty)

individuals. this small studio is where we designed, built and tested everything.

we are now a team of over 100 designers, carpenters and painters in a bigger

building, but with exactly the same passion. from the design right through

to the delivery we make sure every detail and every material reflects our

commitment to quality, design and affordability.

we are not just a team of design geeks though. once you have chosen

something from the neptune collection we want to help you get it home, help

you care for it, and help you if any problem occurs. our guarantees, aftercare

products and our service team will make sure you have a lifetime of enjoyment

right from the beginning our aim was to keep creating new and innovative

we thought about our core values of design,

quality and value. we realised that our island

nation has a rich history in these values,

developed not least because of our close

relationship with the seas and oceans that

surround us and have sustained us. this was

the original inspiration behind our name.

so we decided we only wanted to choose the

best materials that could stand natures test in

order to deliver the very best in quality. we also

turned to the natural beauty that surrounds us

to inspire our design and at the same time we

became fascinated with early artisanal crafts and

traditional joinery methods that make the most

out of the wonderful materials we work with.

finally we had to turn to ourselves to ensure

that we worked as efficiently as we could as a

close-knit team to bring you the very best value.

we also love trying your ideas. from kitchen

sink cabinets to hidden drawers, many of our

we start wIth the best naturaL materIaLs. our

carpenters and joiners love turning a raw piece of timber into something

intricate, complex and beautiful. by using authentic materials and

traditional techniques we can create complex designs that turn a

cabinet into a sophisticated piece of furniture.

timber is a natural, organic material so we are careful to choose the

right wood for the right purpose. Large staves of oak for our work

surfaces, f lexible birch for our smooth hand painted finish and strong

poplar for our cabinet panels. we insist on using timber from well

managed, sustainable forests so we know the history and quality of each

tree. whether it was dry winters or wet springs, we can then decide if

the timber will live up to our expectations.

with this in mind we would never dream of using mdf or chipboard.

the timbers we use are wonderful to work with and are extremely

stable. manufactured materials that are made with noxious chemicals

to hold their shape have no inherent strength and cause real damage to

the environment.

It’s not just the timber we carefully source. we want every detail to be

perfect so we make all our own hardware including our stainless steel

handles, chrome catches and magnets covered in velvet for a soft close.

from the curved skirting boards to the antique brass hinges every

detail is carefully taken care of.

very simply we believe that choosing the best materials gives us the

freedom to design the best furniture. and we think that you want the

best quality, responsibly sourced, beautifully designed furniture at an

everything is hand made, hand painted and

carefully checked. we use complex traditional

carpentry techniques so our furniture is strong,

f lexible and elegant.

all our cabinets are fully framed and use dovetail joints

and traditional mortise and tenon joints epoxy glued

together and physically locked with a dowel. we design

sophisticated details such as curved skirting boards,

raised cabinets for dishwashers, pan drawers than carry

up to 30kgs, velvet covered cutlery drawers, hidden

magnetic catches and removable cornices to make each

piece of furniture extremely functional and very stylish.

we are sticklers for detail. our cabinets go through

a four stage finishing program, all our shelves use

a flexible and elegant zig-zag system, our timber is

sealed with our revolutionary IsoGuard™ system and

we use four coats when hand painting our furniture.

extras and wonderful array of different paints,

handles, hinges and catches and you have bespoke,

to fully open. our chrome magnetic close system

when we fIrst thouGht of desIGnInG an oak

kitchen all we could picture was orange cabinets and fussy fittings.

but then we thought again. surely we could get a new kind of finish

to the oak that would bring a fresh look to a fabulous classic?

well we did it. the henley kitchen is the result, and it is a stunning

celebration of oak in its wonderful natural state. a faded, soft finish

that works beautifully with our warm palette of colours, hand

painted interiors and elegant fittings.

It shows that an oak kitchen can look stunning in any country

setting or urban environment. whatever you like to call it: organic

modernism, a contemporary classic or clean rustic… to us it’s the

perfect balance of traditional carpentry and contemporary styling

oak has hIstorIcaLLy been used to Great

effect on a grand scale: in a large open plan or

farmhouse kitchen. one of our challenges was to make

henley a design suitable for urban galley kitchens as

much as country estates.

It is sophisticated, timeless and when accessorised

with industrial light fittings, wood f looring and a

contemporary colour palette extremely adaptable. It

is a natural material that lends itself beautifully to any

setting, giving it a sense of place, history and style.

naturaL tImbers LIke oak are at home

in any setting. this contemporary look is achieved

through a combination of cut out handles, a full

skirting design and a mix of open shelving, full height

cabinets and industrial accessories. the rough, hewn

timber panelling is in clever contrast to the smooth

cabinet finish.

the entire look effortlessly weaves different textures,

styles and materials together for an individual,

inspirational look.

the chaLLenGe In desIGnInG our henLey

kitchen was to create a finish that celebrated the

natural texture and finish of raw oak. we wanted it to

look great and to wear well. but we didn’t want to use

any coloured waxes, polishes or oils that would tarnish

this naturally beautiful material.

the answer came in an unlikely place: the deck

of a boat. using the advanced nanotechnology

research undertaken by the sailing industry we

developed IsoGuard™: a product that protected the

oak on a molecular level. no surface residue and

no discolouration. Just a beautiful, extremely hard

wearing finish.

the effect was immediate. our excited design team

dreamt up the most extraordinary curved cabinets,

generous larders, statement islands and elegant wine

racks that are beautiful in design and fabulous in detail.

to offer a wealth of useful storage, with the full height

Larder cabinet providing room for pretty much

everything bar the kitchen sink (we’ve already got that

one covered).

whether you choose curved or straight: the large bottom

drawer, four beautifully joined pull-out drawers, spice

racks and fully adjustable top section will keep you

stocked up for months.



henLey Is our most LuxurIous ranGe

simply due to the fact that we use oak throughout. from

the cabinet doors to the internal shelves and dovetail

joints, it is a simple celebration of a wonderful timber.

and because we are using such an exquisite material,

we wanted to make sure all the other details set the

standard. Lovely extras include our hidden drawers,

integral oak towel rail and built in chopping blocks

and trays.

we were so inspired by the henley that we created a

range of antique brass fittings and fixtures that truly

complemented the contemporary finish with a nod to

patina of the past.

henley can be on full show with the inclusion of our

elegant Glazed cabinets with dimmable lights. they

introduce more light, space and drama into your kitchen

always be at the ready for any impromptu celebration or festivity. In fact we

often design furniture by considering what we would most like to have in

our homes, and the chichester tall wine rack is a good example of this.

one of the first pieces of furniture we designed, it is still one of our favourites. with its

slim silhouette, adjustable shelving and space for 25 bottles it is wonderfully useful and

very stylish. however, we have now created the 2ft and 4ft wine rack capable of holding

up to 40 bottles. so crack open a bottle now!

we Get very excIted about the huGhes pendant

Light. It was the original pendant we designed to light up the

island in our first neptune kitchen. It certainly hit the spot as we

were inundated with enquiries about it. but, it became a difficult

project. we wanted the base of the shade to hang at eye level.

however, most pendant lights have a fixed rod. so we set out to

make a telescopic setting that was adjustable to ceiling height. It was

extremely rewarding to come up with the finished product and was

the inspiration behind many of these other stunning lights. these

pendant Lights look great in pairs, as a single statement over a kitchen

table or even over bedside tables. designed to coordinate in any city,

country or coastal home so you have no excuse not to grab one now.

yet the most important consideration

in your home. the best lighting scheme

mimics natural dappled light and creates

tone, drama, warmth and texture: in fact

proper lighting can make hessian look like

velvet. remember that you can’t create magic

without six or seven different light sources.

In the kitchen try mixing side lamps,

back onto white as a safe option, but colour can add

atmosphere, space and emotion to a room. It is also a

quick and easy way to freshen up a kitchen, to change

with the seasons and to make sure a cabinet, wall or

design never dates.

use colour to trick out small spaces. try blurring lines

between f loors, walls and ceilings to make the room

IsoGuard™ treatment oIL Is a technoLoGy we deveLoped,

with a specific desire to find a natural finish for oak furniture. there was

nothing on the market that gave a high performance, didn’t stain or leave an

oily residue. It was the kind of challenge we like. we found the solution in an

unlikely place. on the deck of a boat. using the advanced nanotechnology

research undertaken by the sailing industry we developed a product that

could actually penetrate deeply into the oak. this meant there was no residual

layer left on the surface as it protected each individual molecule of the timber.

what’s more, it is extremely easy to use. simply apply the light oil to the

surface of your wood, allow to penetrate and then wipe off the excess.

Care & Maintenance:

as used on our chichester and Henley collections.

as used on our Harrogate, Sheldrake and Suffolk collections.

if the wood gets knocked, damaged or worn, apply the

oil to the exposed area and it will react with the new

timber to create a new protective seal.

protects wood against most accidents, including spillages

of water, tea, coffee, wine, fizzy drinks, vinegar, olive oil,

milk and lemon juice.

Just remember that it does need some time to really

perform, so allow at least seven days until you start using

the timber. after 28 days your surface is highly protected.

one tin goes a very long way so it really is

Granite is the most durable of all these and tends to look

marble is a softer material that is slightly more porous, and

cabinet features and makes the most

out of all available kitchen space.

to add an extra dimension and

emphasise a particular feature, try off-

setting a sink cabinet or Grand pan

drawer. this will vary the perspective

and create a feature that draws the eye.

you can also use the off-set system for

solving practical installation challenges.

for example, when you find a cabinet

run is tight on space, you can use off-sets

to shorten the run a little. when you get

to the end of a run, if your wall is not

materials and by building all the furniture

ourselves we have better freedom and scope

to create the designs we want.

each kitchen range uses different timbers

to reflect the price, function and form.

chichester, our most affordable range, uses

flexible birch on the framework and interior

shelves. suffolk uses birch for the frames and

oak for the shelves, and finally henley is a

glorious abundance of natural oak.

these timbers have been selected by our

craftsmen for a number of reasons: they are

among the most stable timbers available,

which means your furniture will not twist

and warp over time. they are fantastic to

work with, which allows us to make up any

kind of intricate shape that our designers

dream up.

finally, the look and feel is beautiful: oak

for its warm colour and birch for its smooth

finish which provides an ideal surface for

our hand painted furniture.

we never use mdf or chipboard. they

have no inherent strength and are bad for

the environment as they rely on noxious

chemicals to hold their shape. we take

great care in sourcing our timber from

legal, renewable sources, and by using

finishes that are water based to help

preserve our environment.

our work surfaces are made from large

staves of oak for a beautiful natural look. our

fittings are made from either rust treated

steel, stainless steel, aluminium or chromed

brass. all of our soft close drawer runners are

supplied with a lifetime guarantee on their

performance and can carry a massive 30 kgs.

Constructionour desIGns are compLex and beautIfuL.

the construction details are just as intricate. Instead

of using the cheapest method of gluing joints together,

we pay attention to the characteristics of the timber

and how it will ‘move’ over its lifetime. although our

timber is dried to 6-8% moisture content it will nevertheless

expand and contract according to the humidity of its

new surroundings.

we therefore fully frame our cabinets for greater

strength and beauty. these frames and doors are made

up from stiles (uprights) and rails. making accurate

components according to our master templates is crucial.

these are checked and fine sanded before construction.

this guarantees a high quality of assembly by our

expert carpenters.

the frames are then put into a hydraulic press to guarantee

super tight joins. we use a traditional mortise and tenon

joint epoxy glued together and then physically locked with

a dowel. similarly our drawers are not butt jointed, but

use a dovetail joint, where timber fingers from each part

interlock to create robust corners.

additionally, we always ensure a solid base in our drawers,

which combined with our strong runners, enables them to

carry a massive 30kgs. before we go to finishing, every item

is fitted, and doors and drawers are hand installed to the

millimeter to check that every piece fits together perfectly.

now for the four part finishing program. first we prime

each piece, then follow with a first and second coat with

sanding in between. finally we finish with the last hand

painted coat or for henley a subtle finishing process to

produce a consistent, naturally aged oak. once quality

control have looked over it, we carefully pack your

furniture for delivery.

mass-market standard sizes. each cabinet

is designed to look superb in its own right,

when we fIrst started desIGnInG kItchens,

the only experience we had was designing our small range

of chichester freestanding furniture. we were extremely

lucky. Instead of creating wooden boxes to fit like a jigsaw,

we designed and built stylish free standing cabinets that

fitted like a glove.

we made sure that each cabinet gave you as much space and

versatile storage as possible. the result is a wealth of details

that make our kitchens extra special. for example, we raise

our dishwashers for ease of use, we design large bins with

a shelf above for bin liners whilst our removable skirting

boards give you versatility when designing and practicality

when cleaning. our soft close drawers open to allow full

access and can be removed for cleaning or retrieving lost

items. the drawer boxes are made from a 20mm timber

for added strength (rather than the normal 15mm), the

scalloping on the inner lower drawers of the larder allow

you to see what is stored where, the concealed extractor

system and concealed drawers are neat and discrete, our

latest dimmable lighting is soft and subtle and the hidden

magnetic catches and false facades are clever design tricks.

we could go on, and on, but we hope you get the idea: we

love making every design the best it can possibly be.

2: fITTINGSRobust catches are used throughout

to guarantee our doors keep their

shape for good. on Suffolk and

Henley we even developed our own

hidden magnetic system. We use

soft-close underdrawer runners with a

lifetime guarantee. these are the very

best and can carry 30kgs per drawer.

1: BeST MaTerialS our cabinets are packed full of

high quality materials. We only

use solid timber with a lifetime

guarantee, and we never use

MDf or chipboard as they are

nothing like as durable, and we

expect our furniture to last.

customIse or update your kItchen cabInets by

choosing one of our original paint colours. any of our standard painted

finished pieces have this option. simply check which service is applicable

to the piece you have selected and choose your distinctive colour.

first we prepare each piece by removing all the hardware. then we lightly

rub down your piece with 180 grit paper to ensure a perfectly keyed

surface. we then mask the parts that do not require painting. now we

will set about painting with fine brushstrokes following the grain of the

wood. the colour is built up until we are satisfied. once completely dry

we reassemble your furniture, check it and carefully pack for onward

delivery to you. your choice of paint is included in the service charge.

h A n d p A i n t i n g

fLash paIntInG

even if you choose to retain our wonderful Limestone or honed slate finish,

we recommend a final topcoat to the outside of your kitchen cabinets.

this is because the final fitting process may include bespoke panels and

detailed scribing as well as minor variations in colour with cabinets from

different batches. these minor variations are unnoticeable on freestanding

items, but may not be perfect on your fitted kitchen.

to get the perfect finish simply give the outside of the cabinets a light

rubdown and then follow with a light topcoat. don’t forget to remove the

cabinet doors and all hardware before you start painting. this should take

1-2 days depending on the size of your kitchen and choice of paint colour.

the final effect will definitely be worth it.
