KIPP Columbus

2019-2020 ANNUAL REPORT

Page 2: KIPP Columbus - Fordham Institute

At KIPP, we believe.

We believe in the creation of inspired lives produced by desire, discipline, and dedication.

We are not frightened by the challenges of reality, but believe that we can change our world and our place within it.

We work, plan, create, and dream. Our talent, character, and integrity will be the tools we need to build a better tomorrow.

We believe that we can take this place, this time, and the people here, and build a better place, a better time, and a better people.

As a team and a family, we will either find a way or make one.

“I am because we are.” Ubuntu, an African philosophy

The 2019-2020 school year will be forever marked by the COVID-19 pandemic. From the spring closure of all schools in Ohio, the on-going health crisis and economic crisis, and the compounding effects systemic racism in our country (and more), this year has been challenging to say the least. AND yet… throughout these challenges, the 2019-2020 school year was also defined with an even deeper sense of community and opportunities to create more excellent and equitable schools, together. I came across this quote early on in the pandemic and the truth of it continues to ring true, and relationships are at the heart of KIPP Columbus: “When you take away the building from education, relationships are all you have left. If you can find a positive in this, while everything else is in total chaos, it’s that it’s recalibrated our focus on what is really important.” -- indeed it has, and it will continue to. Our team has connected with every student, delivered meals and computers, spread joy in community car parades, volunteered, marched, protested, hosted beautiful celebrations and an unforgettable graduation drive-thru ceremony. They took time to listen, learn, and love. Many taught our KIPPsters while teaching their own children at home as our state’s schools shifted to remote learning overnight. From KIPP activity vans being transformed into ice cream trucks, our athletic field becoming a space for yoga, the symphony, and self-care, to creative ways to ensure each KIPPster had access to technology and the internet, and so much more. We transformed our middle school gymnasium into a food distribution center just days after the mandatory closure, and to date, we have served over 1million meals to children in our community. KIPP partnered with the YMCA to open a pandemic child care center, became a COVID-19 community testing center, created a KIPP Columbus Emergency Response Fund which to date has supported hundreds of families with critical needs (housing, food, etc), launched a community health clinic on our campus, and we will continue to evolve and adapt to reimagine who we are and what we do, together as we seek to build more excellent and equitable schools as we strengthen our broader community. These are truly just a snapshot of the impactful efforts taking place every day. But partnership and community are not new to KIPP Columbus. It is what has helped make 2020 also the year that our first KIPPsters graduated from college AND our first senior class graduated from KIPP Columbus High. As we enter this next decade, we look forward to what lies ahead. And we are thankful for our students, teachers, families, and community that help make it all possible. To and through, The Honorable Algenon L. Marbley Hannah D. Powell Chairman of the Board Executive Director

At KIPP Columbus, we understand that a singular focus on any one measure or assessment of the “health” of the school can create an incomplete picture of our success inside and outside the classroom.

The KIPP Foundation uses the Healthy Schools and Regions (HSR) framework to provide a holistic set of indicators by which we measure our progress.

At KIPP Columbus, we continuously guide and evaluate our effectiveness through testing, surveys, and personal feedback. Most importantly, we use “The Six Essential Questions” to provide a yardstick by which we can measure our school’s progress and ensure we are focused on our mission and vision as we expand our impact.

WHAT YOU MEASURE MATTERS:

KIPP COLUMBUS CAMPUS

The KIPP Columbus campus includes an Early Learning Center, Primary, Elementary, Middle and High school. The 124-acre property has an

environmental center focused on hands-on STEM education, generously donated by the Battelle as well as an Athletics & Wellness Complex, made

possible through the Chlapaty Family.

Page 10: KIPP Columbus - Fordham Institute

ARE WE SERVING THE CHILDREN WHO NEED US?

KIPP Columbus seeks to support the students who need us most in our community. To evaluate our effectiveness at achieving this directive, we track

key demographic indicators of our students and focus our recruitment efforts on specific high-needs neighborhoods within the city of Columbus.

As an open-enrollment, public school, any child is able to attend KIPP Columbus, and there is no selection process. Students enroll at KIPP Columbus

through a lottery system, and last year alone, there were over 2,000 students on the waiting list, with demand for quality seats exceeding our capacity.*

*KIPP Columbus waitlist numbers are expected to climb in the 2020-2021 school year.

ARE OUR STUDENTS STAYING WITH US?

Our goal is to ensure every student has the opportunity to attend college and experience a life filled with opportunity and choice. We actively recognize that this takes more than just enrolling them at KIPP Columbus; we must keep them here. As such, we closely monitor our attrition rate as a lead indicator of how well we are maintaining our commitment to our KIPPsters and their families.

ARE OUR STUDENTS PROGRESSING AND ACHIEVING ACADEMICALLY?

OUR APPROACH:

Page 14: KIPP Columbus - Fordham Institute

Student achievement and growth at KIPP Columbus is tracked consistently throughout the academic year through a variety of internal and external assessments. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, state reported data is extremely limited for the 2019-2020 school year.*

The 2018-2019 Value-Added data was the strongest KIPP Columbus has ever seen. KIPP had 15x the amount of Academic Growth Required to

receive an A on the State Report Card, and our Progress (Value-Added) score remained high with an overall grade of an ‘A,’

KIPP Columbus ranked 5th out of 3,000+ schools across the state for student growth

For the 3rd year in a row, KIPP Columbus had the HIGHEST amount of student growth of ANY community school in the STATE OF OHIO. KIPP Columbus had the 15th highest amount of student growth across the state. That's 5th out of 3,389 schools in the entire state!

*Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, report card data from 2019-2020 is very limited, and thus in place of what would have been 2019-2020 data we are again sharing the most recent (2018-2019) report card data with you.

KIPP Through College & Career

To ensure our KIPPsters continue on the path through college, the KIPP Through College & Career program supports each student to pursue and enroll in high performing, college

preparatory high schools.

KIPP counselors support students as they prepare for and select the right college and career based on their interests and passions. After high school, KIPP advisors help alumni navigate the academic, social, and financial challenges they might encounter while in

college or pursuing a career.

ARE WE BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE PEOPLE MODEL?

Great people are at the heart of the success we have seen at KIPP Columbus. Everyday their commitment to our KIPPsters brightens the future for hundreds of children, and their daily dedication proves the possible. To make sure we are creating an environment that will help our staff perform at their best, we track staff satisfaction, attrition, and retention rates.

“KIPP Columbus is a unique place to work because it offers the experience of working at both an established organization and a start-up at the same time. KIPP is an established national organization with a large network of resources and institutional knowledge to lean on. However, KIPP Columbus is still growing and evolving. As a region, we are still in a place where we can design systems that define KIPP Columbus for years to come.”
