P R IN C IP L E S O F O P E R A T IO NThe Efficiency and Long-Term Reliability of the Kinney Rotary PistonPump is the Result of the Time-Tested Design.1. The rotary p iston does not sp in on its axis. It moves in a
circu lar path with in the pumping chamber.2. As it passes top dead center, it creates a constan tly increasing
in ternal space on the in let or suction side.3. ...and a constan tly decreasing in ternal space on the pressure
or d ischarge side.4. A h igh-in tegrity seal is main tained between the suction and
pressure sides by a film of oil that is cap tured between the p iston and the cylinder.
5. There is no contact between the p iston and the cylinder.6. The oil film is main tained by oil d ragged in to the clearance
by the moving p iston which creates a hydrodynamic wedge.7. At the end of compression cycle, the clearance volume is
completely filled with oil, making very h igh compressionratios available.
These three facts, the oil seal, the filling of the clearance volume, and nocontact between piston and wall, arewhat give the rotary piston pump itslow blank off, high pumping speeds atlow pressures and great durability.
Depending on your applicationand what vacuum level youneed to attain , Kinney Pumpsare available in either single-stage or two-stage design . The two-stage pumps will ach ieve alower vacuum level due to
the two p iston chambers which are arranged in series
with a connecting channel.

Kinney KT Pumps have threesets of cams and pistons driv-en by a common shaft. Onecam and piston set is nolonger than the other two andthe cams are set 180° apart. The dynamic forces producedby the rotation of the long cam
and piston are balanced by opposing forces producedby the short cams and pistons on either side. Theresulting out-of-balance force is very small, makingit possible to mount the pump on springs or vibra-mounts which substantially reduce the dynamicforces transmitted to the floor.

H IG H V A P O R H A N D L IN GKinney Piston Pumps are equipped with three features to handle high vapor loads. First, the adjustable gas ballast valve can introduce air to the pumping chamber, which helps prevent vapor from condensing in the pump oil.Second, Piston Pumps have a large oil capacity, which has ahigher tolerance to contamination. The large reservoir can collecta significant volume of condensed liquid, which can be drained from the pump.Third, Piston Pumps can operate as part of a vapor handling system, in which the oil reservoir is maintained under vacuum. This is made possible by the oil pump and the design of the oilreservoir to operate under vacuum. Vapor handling systems, which keep the oil dry, can operate in corrosive applications.

Models KD and KDH are single stage vacuum pumpsof "duplex" design. Each has a single shaft with twosets of cams and pistons mounted 180° apart, whichoperate in parallel. The rotary pistons do not touchthe walls of the pumping chambers but are sealed by oil, which acts as both a lubricant and a sealant.KD pumps are air-cooled; KDH pumps need watercooling for most applications.
These are other quality features: a controllable gas ballast to permit the handling of condensablevapors and to minimize oil changes due to vaporcontamination of the sealing oil. Models KD-30 and KD-50 are equipped with an oil mist eliminator, optional on model KDH-130 & KDH-150. Each pumpoperates within the rating of its standard TEFC motor throughout the entire operating pressure range.

Kinney Series, two-stage vacuum pumps, aredesigned to ach ieve lower pressures than can beachieved with single-stage pumps. Two sets of camsand p istons, mounted 180° apart on a single shaft, operate in series. The two pumping chambers areconnected by a channel, which serves as an oil supply duct for the h igh vacuum side of the pumpand as a gas duct between the two stages. The h ighvacuum side is continuously sealed with vacuum oil from its own reservoir, the vacuum condition ingbeing provided by the roughing (2nd) stage.Functionally vibration less, they are well su ited forportable installations. Because there is no metal
contact between the pump p iston and cylinder, clearances are sealed and lubricated with oil. Unitsare equipped with a gas ballast valve to providevapor-handling capability. Oil mist eliminators arestandard . Each pump operates with in the rating ofits standard TEFC motor th roughout its operatingpressure range.Wear is min imum. Units operate without repairs for many years. Pumps can be serviced easily in the field without special tools.Specifically manufactured refrigeration units p repared for use with POE oil, compatible withFreon R134A are also available.

Kinney Piston Pumps have three sets of cams and pistonsdriven by a common shaft. One cam and piston set is nolonger than the other two and the cams are set 180° apart. The dynamic forces produced by the rotation of the longcam and piston are balanced by opposing forces producedby the short cams and pistons on either side. The resultingout-of-balance force is very small, making it possible tomount the pump on springs or vibramounts which substan-tially reduce the dynamic forces transmitted to the floor.
N O A N C H O R B O LT SKT Pumps do not require lagging, anchor boltsor special foundations and may be located onany floor that will support their weight.

The KTC series two-stage high vacuum pumps are of "triplex" design, a single shaft with three sets ofcams and pistons, one set larger than the other.Pumps in this series maintain lower pressures than are attainable with single-stage pumps. In operation, one of the smaller pumping chambers is in series with (backing) the other two, which function in parallel. A unique internal balancing technique reduces the magnitude of pump movement(deflection) to 0.0002'' while simultaneously reducing thedynamic forces transmitted through the flexible mounting padsfurnished with each pump to less than one pound. Thesepumps are vibration-free, air-cooled, (except the KTC-12 whichis water-cooled), and equipped with an adjustable gas ballastproviding vapor handling capability while reducing oil changesby preventing condensable vapors from contaminating the oil.
Other superior quality features include a special umbrellatype discharge baffle to reduce oil loss to levels not attainable in other pumps, solenoid valves to protectagainst oil flooding and the single gas ballast adjustmentthat assures balanced air flow and simple regulation. The pump operates within the rating of its standard TEFCmotor throughout the complete operating pressure range.

H IG H V A P O R H A N D L IN GKinney KT Pumps are equipped with three features to handle high vapor loads. First, the adjustable gas ballast valve can introduce air to the pumping chamber, which helps prevent vapor from condensing in the pump oil.Second, KT Pumps have a large oil capacity, which has a highertolerance to contamination. The large reservoir can collect a significant volume of condensed liquid, which can be drained from the pump.Third, KT Pumps can operate as part of a vapor handling system, in which the oil reservoir is maintained under vacuum. This ismade possible by the oil pump and the design of the oil reservoir to operate under vacuum. Vapor handling systems, which keep the oil dry, can operate in corrosive applications.
