Kingston College Old Boys’ Association, U.S.A. 32nd Reunion2015

We l c o m e to our 3 2 n d

Annual Reunion Awards Dinner .

This year, 2015 - Kingston College celebrates its 90th anniversary as an institution of learning and I am humbled to be the elected leader of this august group of past students whose work and support is the result of tonight`s celebration . I`m extremely proud of the role this chapter has played in the continued support to our alma mater . We are especially grateful to you – old boys, stakeholders, family and friends for being selfless in sacrificing your time, talents and treasures to the benefit of Kingston College and those in need; thank you .

Tonight we are honoring five talented and deserving individuals who in their various fields of endeavor have made Jamaica and Kingston College proud – Ms . Jasmin Reid, an educator and a former vice principal of our North Street Campus . Two music producers - Mr . Augustus ‘Gussie’ Clarke and Mr . Donovan Germaine; these two gentlemen are responsible for exporting our reggae music far and wide through the many outstanding artistes that they have worked with and produced their music . Mr . Dennis Thompson – Studio/sound engineer, one of the geniuses behind Bob Marley`s tours around the world and Alicia Keys . Mr . Paul Campbell - a talented actor and comedian is probably best known for his line from Dance Hall Queen (which I’ll refrain from repeating here tonight), but the various roles he has played on screen and theater productions

demonstrates his versatility .

Our year in review shows that our scholarship program for students at KC has grown by roughly 20% . Last year we provided forty (40) scholarships . This year we have expanded our provision to over fifty (50+) students . We have seen a growth in branded scholarships where individuals and groups seek to honor a family member, former teacher or their group . Among the new Branded scholarships are: The Rev . E . Don Taylor; Clinton Clarke; Kitson Blissett; Lilly Johnson; Jermoth & Eulalee Dixon; Daniel & Jean Davidson; Robert Taylor; Joyce Baxter and Keith Bryan . Our project, “Fortis Care Backpack” is almost ready to be shipped for September to provide at risk students with personal and school supplies . We continue to support students studying at UTech, UWI, in Cuba and the USA . We remain committed to the Prize Giving, Nutrition Program, basketball, choir, football, table and lawn tennis, track and field and our Joyce Baxter Math Club . This year we combined our Annual KCOBA Presentation with awards to the students with the best passes and the most improved student . I must make special mention of our scholarship recipient and Joyce Baxter Math Club president, Jordon Crawford for receiving a full scholarship to the United World College (UWC), Robert Bosch campus, in Freiburg, Germany, starting in September . Terrain Findley is our current top scholar awardee, not only among the scholarship recipients, but the entire Kingston College .

As we come to the conclusion of our KC Library

Kingston College Old Boys’ Association, U.S.A. 32nd Reunion2015

I write, with the utmost pleasure, to congratulate

the Kingston College Old Boys Association USA Inc . (KCOBA USA Inc .) on the occasion of the 32nd Annual Reunion Dinner organized by the Association .Each year the Reunion Awards Dinner provides a welcome opportunity for Old Boys, teachers, friends and well-wishers of Kingston College to come together to celebrate the Fortis spirit, to reminisce about school events and activities, as well as to rekindle bonds of camaraderie and friendship from the days of old .

At the Reunion Awards Dinner, we also have the opportunity to reflect on challenges faced by our beloved alma mater, and to consider ways in which we may all contribute to further advancement of an institution we cherish and love .

And as it is with the College, so it is with the individuals who, by their commitment, loyalty and expertise, have contributed significantly to the institution’s progress and, above all, to its students . In this regard, I wish to congratulate this year’s honorees at the Reunion, Ms . Jasmine Reid, and Messrs Paul Campbell, Augustus “Gussie” Clarke, Donovan Germaine and Dennis Thompson . All the honorees have helped in many ways to uplift the proud name of Kingston College, by helping students, and by inspiring them: in some instances, the inspiration has been direct and immediate, while in others, it has been through setting an example of accomplishment and success for

young Jamaicans at home and in the Diaspora . I congratulate the honorees and offer my gratitude and respect to them all .

In the case of Ms . Reid, it almost seems like yesterday that she helped guide our class through the rigours of making a structured argument for the Cambridge GCE AO General Paper Examination: “in fact”, yesterdays go, but the memories remain and our admiration for Ms . Reid’s dedication and sensitivity has endured, and will endure, for life . In the case of the other honorees, we will “walk and live” as we respect high order achievements in the fields of acting and music production: it cannot be an accident that Kingston College may present itself as one of the pre-eminent schools for popular entertainment in Jamaica; and the explanation for this lies in part to the models of success provided by the big four honored this year by the Old Boys Association .

In closing, I urge the KCOBA USA Inc . to press along with its various projects for the benefit of the College . The energetic President Bloomfield and his team are to be encouraged with efforts such as the Library and Technology Capital Campaign and the Douglas Forrest Building project . The 90th Anniversary Year must be a time of distinction and achievement .

Kingston College Old Boys’ Association, U.S.A.32nd Reunion2015

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIRMAN

The theme “90 Years of Excellence”

chosen by the Kingston College Old Boys

Association, USA Inc . is more than appropriate as we celebrate the 90th anniversary of our alma mater Kingston College . It is so, not only because it recognizes that milestone but also because it acknowledges that the history of Kingston College has been one of excellence demonstrated in achievements of the highest standards in every area of school boy involvement – academics, sports and other extra-curricular activities .

But, Kingston College could not be otherwise, having been founded “to give an education based upon principles that will make for the development of character no less than of intellect”; having the then Rev . Percival William Gibson as its founding headmaster followed by other distinguished headmasters; and having what has become a captivating and iconic motto “Fortis Cadere Cedere Non Potest” translated “The Brave May Fall But Never Yield” .

We who have passed through the halls of Kingston College can relate intimately to this motto . It has been a mantra and it has been a way of life for us . It is the foundation of the Fortis spirit and is part of the reason why the Kingston College Old Boys Association, USA Inc . has been and continues to be a vibrant and committed member of the Kingston College family and an invaluable contributor to the school and the welfare of countless students .

In this regard, I say a special thanks to you for the Library & Technology Capital Campaign which you have commenced to facilitate the establishment of a Library & Technology Centre in an expanded Douglas Forrest Building . We look forward to a successful campaign .

It is therefore a pleasant task for me, as Chairman, on behalf of the Board of Management of our esteemed Kingston College, to extend greetings and best wishes to the Kingston College Old Boys Association, USA Inc . and its members on the occasion of your 32nd Annual Reunion and Awards Dinner . We trust that you will have an enjoyable and satisfying evening of fellowship and reunion .

I also extend, on behalf of the Board of Management, sincere congratulations to your honorees this year, Ms . Jasmine Reid and Messrs . Paul Campbell, Augustus “Gussie” Clarke, Donovan Germain and Dennis Thompson . These honorees have all contributed to the advancement of our students and the school directly and indirectly and have achieved success in their respective field of endeavour . The honour is well deserved by each of them .

We have a number of activities planned to commemorate the 90th anniversary and we do hope that some of your members will be able to participate . Information on these activities is being and will continue to be circulated .

May we keep the Fortis Spirit alive and burning for our beloved Kingston College .

Kingston College Old Boys’ Association, U.S.A.32nd Reunion2015

It is my pleasure to be asked to send a message

to the KCOBA (New York) for your annual fund raising banquet and magazine .

First and foremost, I would like to express my heart-felt gratitude to you for your continued support of Kingston College through your financial contributions and the support that you continue to give to the school . Your ongoing contributions to welfare, academics and co-curricular activities have assisted in enabling us to continue the process of providing opportunities and access to our students . Without your support this would not have been possible .

The defining purpose of Kingston College is to provide our students with an excellent, traditional education in spite of the cost to the school . We are also committed to grooming young Christian gentlemen who will be able to make a meaningful contribution to our country . During the past 90 years, Kingston College has been engaged in creating an environment and ambience that fosters learning, and the rounded development of its students . Today the mission and vision is no different and we are passionate about providing our students with opportunities to explore and grow . This has been done through the improvement and extension of the physical structure of the school, the re-structuring of the curriculum, a significant focus on discipline and good conduct and the inclusion of awards ceremonies such as The

Helen Douglas Awards Ceremony which has gone a long way in motivating the students to aim for excellence in both academics and behaviour .

These improvements have been made with the assistance of stakeholders such as the KCOBA (New York) . The collaboration between the School and stakeholders such as the KCOBA is a sterling example of the KC Family’s commitment to the Fortis traditions . The contribution to academic development has been the key focal point of the New York Chapter and this has manifested itself through academic scholarships awarded to several students annually . For the academic year 2014-15, fifty (50) students were presented with academic scholarships which have proven to be very beneficial to them . The KCOBA (New York) also continues to support the academic programmes of the school through its significant financial contribution to our annual Prize-Giving Ceremony . We recognize the importance of the role played by the KCOBA (New York) and are extremely grateful for the contributions made to the school over the years .

In order for Kingston College to continue to make the strides that it has made over these last 90 years, it requires the full and total support of all its stakeholders specifically the KCOBA through its various chapters; It requires a full and total commitment to the vision and mission of the school and it requires each and every one of us viewing our motto and the Fortis refrain as a call to action and a call to serve .

It is indeed a pleasure to bring greetings to the KCOBA USA Inc . on the occasion of their 32nd Annual Reunion and Awards Banquet . This annual event which recognizes service to the Alma Mater is a

major instrument in building the fortis spirit, a spirit which is envied and emulated internationally .

As the K .C . family gives thanks and celebrates the School’s 90th anniversary we will redouble our efforts to ensure that the present and future generations lf young men at K .C . capture the vision of who they may become for the advancement of the human race . We are all encouraged by the current performance of the School in academic and other area under the leadership of Headmaster Myrie and the current Board of Management and we applaud the continued contributions of the Old Boys Associations

The Library and Technology Project recently launched by the New York Chapter deserves the support of all who wish K .C . well . The KCDTF is reminding prospective contributors to the project that in Jamaica sending funds through the KCDTF makes contributions tax exempt,

Thanks to the KCOBA USA Inc . for its help over the years to build a Capital Fund the earnings from which have contributed significantly to the School and will continue to do so in perpetuity . It was hoped that the Capital in the 90th Anniversary year would have reached $90 million but regrettably it currently stands at about $60 million . The last development project has been a continuation of replacement of windows at the North Street campus .

In the present crisis in the Jamaican economy the achievement of students depends more and more on the support from the school family . Thanks be to God for those who contribute .

It is with sincere pleasure that I extend greetings and congratulations to Kingston College Old Boys Association, on the occasion of your 32nd Annual Reunion and Awards Dinner and as you celebrate

“90 Years of Excellence .”

It is heartening to see that the vision and the expectations of your founding father, Bishop W . Percival Gibson continues to be reflected in your charity, sacrifice, and perseverance . Over the past 90 years, Kingston College has produced men who have distinguished themselves in the arts, sports, business, science and technology, and law . Consistent with those and other exemplary achievements, you all have realized the unique opportunity to play a vibrant and influential role in your alma mater by being actively involved with the school and its students . By doing so, you are contributing to the development of our young people and our nation . You are to be commended for continuing to hold fast to your vision and your goals .

As you reflect on your schools legacy, and on your organizations history, I encourage you to revel in the contributions and achievements that have been borne from your hard work, diligence and commitment . Similarly, I urge you to reflect on the difficulties that challenged your resolve, for it is from both the good and the bad, the happy and the sad, the sweet and the savory, that we develop and maintain our strength and our conviction .

As you look forward, I encourage you to continue to play an active role in the enhancement of the educational achievement of our homeland . We must raise the bar in terms of our contributions and impact . I urge you to collaborate in larger efforts to impact education across our island nation and to share your experiences across our community to create a more united Diaspora . Your membership in UJAA allows for such collaboration and such an impact . Let us do this together .

In keeping with your record of excellence, I congratulate you on your choices of honorees, and congratulate them on their distinguished achievements .

On behalf of the Executive Board and members of UJAA, please accept my heartfelt wishes for a successful 32nd Annual Reunion celebration and for many years of continued success .

Chapter of Kingston College Old Boys

Association 32nd Annual Reunion and Awards Banquet Souvenir Magazine

The KCOBA is pleased to join the New York Chapter in celebrating your 32nd Annual Reunion and Awards Banquet . We are particularly pleased to be sending this message as Kingston College celebrates its 90th anniversary . We recognise this annual reunion event is therefore especially meaningful in this year when the school celebrates under the theme “90 years - Never Yielding!” In that vein, too, the theme of this year’s Banquet – “90 Years of Excellence” - is well chosen .

Once again, members of the NY Chapter, friends and well-wishers will gather to share ideas, memories, have fun, raise funds, and to recognize Fortis Excellence . Our heartiest congratulations to the awardees: Ms . Jasmin Reid (retired English teacher par excellence and former Vice Principal at KC), Mr . Donovan “Penthouse” Germaine and Mr Augustus “Gussie” Clarke (record producers extraordinaire), Mr . Dennis Thompson (world renown audio/studio engineer), and Mr Paul Campbell (talented actor and comedian) . One excellent teacher who went to KC and became Fortis, and four KC Old Boys who have all become legends in their fields . These are all very worthy recipients, and I am particularly happy for Ms . Reid, who taught me and remains one of my favourite KC teachers .

Congratulations, too, to Mr Rainford “Perry” Bloomfield and his Board of Directors, under whose leadership the KCOBA NY continues to grow from strength to strength, always striving for excellence . We congratulate KCOBA NY for once again not yielding in your support of excellence at our alma mater and, by extension, the whole Jamaica . We continue to be grateful for the role played each year by the NY Chapter in welcoming and hosting our teams to the Penn Relays . We also recognise the other invaluable contributions you continue to make to the sustainable development of Kingston College through, inter alia, scholarships and bursaries, the provision of tools and equipment, mentorship programmes and support to welfare programmes at the school .

We look forward to collaborating on various events in celebration of our 90th anniversary, knowing that KCOBA NY is “ . . .committed to supporting and promoting Fortis Excellence Forever” . In the meantime, here’s to a memorable 32nd KCOBA NY Annual Reunion and Awards Banquet - a wonderful evening of reminiscing, networking, Fortis fellowship and celebration of excellence!

Kingston College Old Boys’ Association, U.S.A.32nd Reunion2015

The cycle of celebrations and fundraising continues in this our 90th year . In school years this is indeed young and the many achievements of Kingston College are well chronicled . The

future is the task at hand and once again we congratulate our brothers of the New York chapter for their continued sterling work to advance the cause of Kingston College . Our school is on the move under the astute leadership of Principal Dave Myrie and I implore ALL old boys to make contact with the school, get your update(s) first hand and depend less on public opinion for your thoughts and actions related to the Kollege . Remember “public opinion is invariable uninformed or misinformed”( Frances Coke 1971) .

For the most part I think old boys deeds are well intentioned but there is an ugly culture of ‘me’ that threatens to destroy the family we know as Fortis . There are old boys and groups of old boys who’s attitude and actions suggest the primary association with KC is for self advancement and IF KC benefits then all is well and if KC does not , well “ a so it go” . The various KCOB chapters operate under different umbrellas and via different styles however the goal directed behavior should be the same, the betterment of KC’s students . The time, effort and money should all lead to Clovelly and Melbourne Parks . It is shameful and unacceptable (in my opinion) that there is a reluctance at times for old boys to support events initiated by other chapters . As far as I know there is no individual prize for supporting KC, only the satisfaction that the boys who benefit will be good sons of Jamaica . Years ago we were those same students .

Heartiest Congratulations to the 2015 Champions of Kingston College life, Jasmine Reid, Paul Campbell, Augustus Clarke, Donovan Germain and Dennis Thompson whose distinguished lives have put KC on the map . We thank them for their contribution(s) to KC and look forward to their continued involvement in the advancement of the greatest school on earth .

Kingston College Old Boys’ Association, U.S.A. 32nd Reunion2015

In this milestone year of 2015, I take pride and pleasure in joining you in your 32nd Annual Reunion & Awards Dinner as you celebrate “90 Years of Excellence” of our beloved alma mater, Kingston

College .

I commend and congratulate your Chapter on the many fruitful and successful initiatives you pioneered and accomplished in the past . The most recent of which is the ambitious KC Library and Technology Capital Campaign, which seeks to raise US$302,650 towards revolutionizing the library and technology capabilities at KC . With all the Chapters and all supporting persons galvanizing into one committed body, the target will be achieved .

Whilst we commemorate the past, celebrate our recent successes, and contemplate our future prospects, let us together focus on regaining our status in scholarship . Our achievements in co-curricular activities are a matter of record .

The basic reason for our sojourn at KC was to get an education . Hence, we particularly wish to extend our warm felicitations to your honoree, retired English teacher and former Vice- Principal Mrs . Jasmine Reid . Her diligence and commitment to teaching and to Kingston College was instrumental in the scholastic achievements of many a KC boy . Our congratulations also extend to your other distinguished honorees that have excelled in the field of entertainment and have made indelible impressions not only in Jamaica but internationally as well .

On behalf of Kingston College Old Boys’ Association in Toronto I wish for you, your honorees, and your guests a most successful and enjoyable evening .

It is with great pleasure that I extend best wishes on behalf of the Atlanta chapter of the Kingston College Old Boys’ Association to the New York chapter on their 32nd Annual Reunion and Awards

Dinner .

We admire the great work President Perry Bloomfield and his team is doing, and wish you continued success in your efforts to improve our beloved Kingston College .

As KC old boys, we all share the same passion for our school and treasure the many memories and experiences we had as students of the college . Our dedication and love of school is the envy of other institutions .

Congratulations to all the honorees . Many thanks to Ms . Jasmine Reid, retired Vice Principal and English teacher for her hard work and dedication to the college .

As I write, KC has just wrapped up a week of celebrations to mark the school’s 90th anniversary . Long live the memory of Bishop Percival Gibson our revered founder and first headmaster .

We have come a long way since that historic morning on April 16, 1925 when 49 boys gathered in a courtyard to hear the words declaring the opening of Kingston College . Much has been achieved but much remains to be done .

Keep up the good work and enjoy the dinner!

The Kingston C o l l e g e Old Boys

A s s o c i a t i o n continues to provide support to their alma mater in various ways . Among the many areas of involvement are contributions to the Scholarship Programme, Schools’ Challenge Quiz Team, Joyce Baxter Math Club, Sports Department and an Etiquette Session for the Sixth (6th) Formers .

Over the last fifteen (15) years the number of scholarship awards has increased from 10 to 50 . These recipients have been excelling academically . Most of them are on the school’s honour roll and they have also received the Helen Douglas Award for continued excellence . They managed to balance their academic with co-curricular activities . In November 2014 an awards function was held for them . They were addressed by Mr . Rainford Bloomfield, president of the Chapter . Many of the awardees are involved in the National Youth Orchestra, Kingston College Chapel Choir, Table Tennis, Schools’ Challenge, Lawn Tennis, Track & Field, Football, Hockey and Cricket .

Commendation has to be given to the Chapter for assisting the Table Tennis Team under the tutelage of the renowned coach, Collin McNeish in honing their skills and representing their country . The Table Tennis Team which boasts five national players was the top high school in the Under 19 category for 2015 . They finished the season unbeaten and copped the Urban & Island wide Trophies in the Issa/Securipro Competition . They will venture to the US Warm-Up again this year, to display their skills on the international stage .

The Joyce Baxter Math Club has expanded beyond the Melbourne Park Campus and now meets on the North Street Campus also . They have also expanded beyond the walls of Kingston College and are inter-clubbing with other schools . A number of club members entered the U .W .I . Mathematics Olympiad and one member, Brian Llewellyn advanced to the finals . Four of the boys will be awarded Certificates of Merit for being in the top 10% of this all island competition .

At the Annual Meet & Greet in March 2015 the scholarship awardees and the Math Club members got a chance to meet some of their sponsors and directors of the Chapter . Students received awards in the following categories:

Top Academic Achiever – Torrain Findley

Most Improved Student Academically – Ras Ben Miller

Top Math Student – Brian Llewellyn

Most Improved Math Student – Christopher Bernard

The aforementioned Etiquette Session was held on December 11, 2014 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel to improve the social skills of our students . This will provide them with a launching pad to interact with corporate leaders .

The principal, staff, students and their parents are truly grateful for the continued support of the chapter . In this harsh economical climate, we appreciate the sacrifices that have been made for the school and the upliftment of our young gentlemen .

The Annual Kingston College Scholarship Awards took place

on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at the St . Augustine Chapel, North Street . Chair of the proceedings and Vice Principal of Kingston College Mrs . Marguerite Hall welcomed special guests, recipients, parents and the wider school community to the event . She said that each year she was happy to see so many students being granted the opportunity of fulfilling their dream through the continuous kindness of the Kingston College Old Boys Association USA Inc . (NY, PA, NJ, CT, and MA) . Fifty scholarships were awarded for 2014/2015 academic year .

Prayer was offered by Mrs . Sonia Watson, Guidance Counsellor and Scholarship Program Administrator who thanked God for the blessings granted each year for more persons to benefit from the hard work of KCOBA USA Inc . and KCOBA Georgia .

In his greetings to members of the audience, President of the KCOBA USA Inc, Mr . Rainford “Perry” Bloomfield, said he was extremely proud to stand before members of his alma mater to announce the offering of 50 scholarships to deserving students, up from 40 last year . Mr . Bloomfield went on to give some history as to why the KCOBA USA Inc . continues to provide scholarships even under extreme financial decline in the economy . He said through the Annual Scholarship Fundraiser (Dance & Raffle) and Boat Ride, his organization’s delight each

year is to see the faces of students who have done the work academically while participating in extra curricular activities for the school . He noted that the access to the scholarship was far more than just the financial need of a student .

During his greetings, the KCOBA USA Inc President introduced two University Law students who he said made the organization’s reason for giving every year very rewarding . He introduced Mr . Steven Jackson and Mr . Litrow Hickson both recent graduates from the UWI Law Faculty and now at Norman Manley Law School . Both Hickson and Jackson were recipients of scholarships throughout their University and high school years coming from very humble beginnings but had the academic drive to succeed .

Mr . Bloomfield asked the well dressed University of the West Indies Mona Law students to say a few words to the present scholarship recipients . Mr . Hickson thanked KCOBA USA Inc as well as Mrs . Watson and Mrs . Hall for the shoulders of support throughout his tough school years, he told the students present that by achieving his high grades there was comfort knowing that the financial support was there .

Litrow was the Valedictorian for University of the West Indies Mona 2014 Law Graduation .

Steven spoke about the need to be humble and respectful to all persons rich and poor and implored the awardees to take a page from his study tip which is to review the lesson learnt each day on the same day as they are taught . He thanked KCOBA USA Inc and persons who were in his corner and those who gave motivation throughout his years at KC and now the University of the West Indies Mona . Steven a member of the Kingston College Chapel Choir and now a senior was a member of the winning Debating Team in his final year at KC . These gentlemen proved that even with single parent homes and parents earning low incomes, the love that they had kept them going . The message, never be ashamed of where you come from, Steven was hailed as one of the ‘5 of Jamaica’s promising UWI graduates under 25’ in a newspaper article published in late October, 2014 .

The Principal, Dave Myrie in his remarks to the scholarship awardees first thanked Steven and Litrow for making the time to attend the

event but most importantly for the lasting message that they gave . He stated his delight in listening to the two young gentlemen speech and asked them to return on his invitation to give mentorship talks to current students . He noted that the working relationship with the overseas chapters remain key to the future of the institution and thanked the KCOBA for their unwavering partnership with the school over the years .

Presentation of Awards was handed out by Mr . Rainford “Perry” Bloomfield, President KCOBA USA Inc .; Mr . Dave Myrie, Principal; and Mr . Everton Burrell,

Vice Principal .

Kadeem was a member of the winning 2014 School Challenge Quiz Team and a former Chorister . He will be awarded the Principal’s Award for Best CSESC Results in 2014 for Kingston College as one of the two students to be so honoured .

In an interview with Mr . Bloomfield after the presentation, he said “We are especially passionate about our growing Scholarship program which is rooted in the fact our Founder the Rt . Rev . Bishop Gibson was himself a scholarship recipient in 1907 . Today we are proud as an organization to be able to

“I have no intention of becoming a teacher .” This was a statement often repeated by me as a student at Ardenne High School and even at university when the

question regarding my career choice was asked . That negative answer was prompted, not because I disliked the idea of teaching but deep down inside me – and not even at the level of consciousness that it could be articulated – I felt that to be responsible for shaping the lives of children was such an awesome task that I could not see myself undertaking the role of a teacher .

My unexpressed ambition was to become a medical doctor which would satisfy my desire to work with people and help them . To this end, when I graduated from Ardenne, in order to gain valuable experience, I was employed and trained as a Medical Technologist at the Government Bacteriology and Pathological Laboratory .

After three years, and having qualifications in the Arts as well as Sciences, for some inexplicable reason, I applied and was accepted to read for a Special Honours Degree in English at The University of the West Indies (UWI) . A friend had collected some application forms for UWI and presented them to me saying it was time for me to go to university . The forms were for admission to the Faculty of Arts . The person did not know that I had planned to do medicine but knew that I had got distinctions in English Language and Literature and History in the General Certificate Examinations (GCE) and assumed that the Arts was my area of interest . The closing date for submission of the application was near and so I hastily completed the forms .

After completion of the English Honours degree in

1966, I later embarked on postgraduate studies . I was awarded the Diploma in Education with distinctions in the Theory and Practice of Education . I also pursued the Master’s degree in Education . In order to broaden the scope of my interests, I did further studies leading to the Diploma in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations . These pursuits were concurrent with my seeking to discover what was my calling .

In September of 1966, I was invited by the Principal of Immaculate Conception High School for girls to join the staff of that school . I informed her that I was not interested in teaching .She explained that she had contacted me based on the recommendation of one of my former lecturers at UWI . The job was temporary as the teacher who was being replaced was going on leave for three months . After much persuasion, I accepted the offer, confident that by January I would have made up my mind as to what I wanted to do .

December came very quickly . The Principal commended me on my contribution and expressed regret that there was not a vacancy in the English Department as she would have liked to employ me permanently .

It seemed that there was a force at work shaping my future in a way that I had not anticipated . Two days before Christmas I was contacted by Mr . Douglas Forrest who told me that he urgently needed a teacher of English and History to fill a permanent post at Kingston College and I had been recommended to him . I thanked him but asserted once more that I was not inclined to be a teacher . It was as if he had not heard me as he insisted that I give him my word that I would turn up in January to fill the post . I had actually enjoyed the brief period I had spent at Immaculate and so it was not too difficult to assure him that I would be available to serve until he could

Kingston College Old Boys’ Association, U.S.A.32nd Reunion2015find a replacement . I regard it as a privilege to have worked with Mr . Forrest as Principal .

In January 1967, I started on a journey that was the turning point in my life . At the end of the academic year, I reminded Mr . Forrest about finding my replacement . He did not seem to remember our agreement and the rest as the saying goes was history .

I served at Kingston College from 1967-1991 and I can say unequivocally, that was the best period of my life . I am convinced that God had planned my career and placed me just where I ought to be although I had put up so much resistance and I have no regrets . I am happy to be a part of the KC family . My commitment and loyalty are unswerving . Even today there is hardly anyone with whom I come in contact who is not aware of the KC connection .

During the period of my tenure, I was classroom teacher, Senior Teacher and Vice Principal . I taught English Language, English Literature, General Paper and History for a short time . For many years I, with the assistance of a small committee, was responsible for making all the arrangements for Prize Giving and Graduation to ensure that they were successful functions . I often assisted the Valedictorian in his preparation for the presentation of his speech at Graduation . There was no activity of the school which I did not support or give some assistance . Among these activities were Manning Cup Football, Sunlight Cricket and debating . Gibson Relays and Boys’ Championship are still fixtures on my calendar . Participation in Extra Curricular activities, contribute to character building and the all-round development of young people . I was proud to see the determination, tenacity and team spirit that accounted for the outstanding accomplishments of KC boys in a wide variety of areas .

By 1972, I was totally committed to teaching . Although most of my close relatives were living overseas, I was determined to stay in Jamaica in spite of the political turmoil . I reasoned that I would

make my contribution to nation building through teaching and helping to develop young people with sound values, good conduct, a positive self-concept, sound character and a willingness to work hard to achieve personal success and make a contribution to the society which nurtured them . I must emphasize that the all-round development of the student was a priority – not just the passing of examinations . Although I did appreciate the importance of a good academic record, I did not want students to leave school with just a certificate . I wanted them to appreciate the value of making the effort to succeed in all areas of their lives, and the importance of achieving their goals honestly and by hard work and determination .

I was happy that the subjects I taught provided an opportunity to explore life –people’s attitudes, interpersonal relationships, the choices made by people and their consequences . Preparation for life was at the core of all our activities and the need to communicate and respect the views of others was stressed . I tried to inculcate qualities that would make my students fit to face the challenges of life by always striving for excellence in whatever they did .

My students were told verbally and by my actions that I was not seeking cheap popularity .I would be firm when necessary even if this meant that I would sometimes earn their displeasure . I would not compromise my insistence on high standards in order to win their approval . Actually I found that most students did not object to being reprimanded if they were treated with respect and their sense of justice was not abused . I loved my students and only desired the best for them . I reasoned that that every student had someone who loved him and would not wish him to be mistreated . In the case where the student lacked the support at home then I should provide it at school . I did not always succeed but I did try to treat students in a way that would ensure the development of their self-confidence . Before I met a group of students for the

Fortis Cadere Cedere Non Potest • The Brave May Fall But Never Yield Page - 55

Kingston College Old Boys’ Association, U.S.A. 32nd Reunion2015first time, I did not wish to be informed who were the troublemakers because it could have influenced how I related to those students and it was not fair to judge anyone by his past . Moreover, there was always the possibility of change .

I am convinced that God made parents and teachers a part the creation process by entrusting children to their care to assist in their development . This is a serious responsibility which should not be taken lightly .

I always believed that all children had the potential to learn; but they all had individual differences which could impact on the learning process . It was the teacher’s responsibility to find ways to tap into the child’s potential and so facilitate his ability to learn . My motto was -“if students did not learn then I had not taught “ . While I acknowledged that In the learning process the onus was on the teacher , I knew that students had to play their part and they were encouraged to do so by my insistence that discipline and application were essential .

I should mention that KC had some of the best teachers . I often wondered to what extent the students appreciated how fortunate they were . Most of the staff was qualified and competent and they all wanted their students to do well .

My background explains a lot about who I am and the values I have embraced that have determined the road I have travelled . The most important influence on my life is Christianity which has shaped my world view and affected my relationship with God and man . My home and school socialized me so that I sought to be engaged in a vocation –not just a job . I developed interests in reading, drama, poetry and singing (I was a member of the Ardenne school choir which from I was in school had established a reputation for good singing . We made our mark in the annual Music Festival .) The KC choir reminds me with pleasure of my own earlier involvement in singing .After I left school I was a member of the Jamaica National Choral and Orchestral Society . I

also enjoyed a wide range of sporting activities as participant and supporter . I played netball at school and after I graduated . My specialty was athletics . It was almost inevitable that my teaching career blossomed at KC with its rich history of developing the talents of many generations of young men . I was in an environment in which I was comfortable . All my life I have sought to achieve academic excellence and I know I will never stop learning . My own all round development has motivated me to desire the same for all young people with whom I come in contact .

In 1991, I was recruited to join the administrative staff at the University of the West Indies . So reluctant I was to leave Kingston College that I was on secondment for two years before I finally made up my mind . Employment at UWI meant that I would no longer be inhaling the chalk dust to which I had developed an allergic reaction . I also saw this change as an opportunity to widen the scope of my experience and interact not only with KC students who were studying to obtain degrees but also with students from other islands .

I retired from the University in2005, having been promoted to the level of Senior Assistant Registrar . In this job, I got the opportunity to travel to other West Indian islands where meetings were sometimes held . I also visited universities in other countries .Having been a student at UWI, it was a revelation to discover how the institution was run and the intricacies of the decision making process .

I can only be grateful that the jobs, in which I was privileged to be employed, gave me the opportunity to interact with young people . I thoroughly enjoyed my work experiences and trust that I have contributed even in a small way to their functioning competently as they meet the challenges of the twenty-first century . I exhort them all to continue to be inspired by the mottoes of the two schools with which I was affiliated – Ardenne High School and Kingston College -- “With God as guide we seek the best” and “The brave may fall but never yield .”

Au g u s t u s “ G u s s i e ” Clarke was

born in the parish of St Mary in Jamaica on March 26, 1954

and grew up with his adopted Mother Miss Iris Robinson of Kingston, who sent him to Calabar Primary School and Kingston College .

Gussie’s entrepreneurial acumen can be traced back to 1966, his second year at Kingston College . He started a “business”, selling rides on his bicycle in the early morning before the start of school – the proceeds of this venture along with saved lunch money were used to purchase a pre-amplifier, turntable, speaker and power amplifier parts . He also learnt to make speaker boxes in woodwork class, and Miss Robinson engaged a technician to make a power amplifier as a birthday gift . This lead to the birth of King Gussie Hi-Fi and with this Gussie had now joined the ranks of famous men whose heavy-bass sound systems pounded out reggae music in its infancy and provided the medium for the birth of deejay music, a genre that would eventually spawn American rap .

Not one to limit himself, Gussie began importing and Exporting records through a friend in the UK, New York and supplied Jamaican sound systems with 7”, 12” and Dub specials created from his home studio in church street in Kingston, Incidentally that was the birth of Home studios in Jamaica & a picture of this is on the CD “Gussie Presenting the right tracks” here for you tonight . This venture in entrepreneurship attained another dimension

in the industry . He also voiced a song at the renowned Downbeat Studio One .

Mr . Clarke launched his career as a record producer at 18-years-old in 1972; the single ‘The Higher the Mountain’ voiced by legendary pioneer Deejay U-Roy, was to become a classic . This early foray into producing was the start of a journey that has been marked by vision, planning, focus, organization and integrity and ultimately success . Always breaking new ground, Gussie Clarke became probably the first truly professional producer in an industry that has been laden with creative talent but lacking in efficient administration .

With an uncanny knack of picking winners, over the years he has produced crucial records for a number of outstanding Jamaican artistes such as Big Youth with the classical single and album “Screaming Target”, U-Roy, I-Roy, Augustus Pablo, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, The Mighty Diamonds, Freddie McGregor, J .C . Lodge, Coco-T, Home-T, Thriller-U, Shabba Ranks and Maxi Priest among others . He is responsible for notable hits including, Telephone Love (J .C . Lodge), Just A Little Bit Longer (Maxi Priest), Twice My Age (Shabba Ranks and Krystal), Rumours (Gregory Isaacs), Mr . Loverman (Shabba Ranks) and the album Two Wicked (Aswad) .

Gussie Clarke was perhaps the first Jamaican producer to issue regular royalty statements to artistes, and one of the earliest to engage in music publishing - Dub Plate Music Publishers . Yet many see Gussie most significant contribution to the Jamaican music industry not in his producing or publishing (over 5,000 songs in the Dub Plate catalogue)

Kingston College in 1959 and graduated

in 1965 . He started Audio Engineering and his span in the business of shaping electronically amplified sound is over 50 years . Dennis was on his way to Kingston College, when he saw founding Skatalites Saxophonist Lester Sterling on his way to Studio One and so he decided to sneak out of school and visit Studio One . He walked through the doors of the studio and his interest to be an engineer was established . Dennis had also played the piano since he was seven years old and turned down an offer to join the Skatalites, but decided to introduce his schoolmate, Jackie to join the band, and the Legend of Jackie Mittoo was born . Thompson came under the tutelage of Australian engineer Graham Goodall and ‘Sticky Parks’, as well as persons who worked at RJR .

Thompson became the first person, not a member of the Blake family by blood, to play

Merritone Disco . When Thompson ended his stints behind the turntables, and getting firmly on the engineering path, he started at the top .He was the Timekeeper at Studio One, Mastering Engineer at Randy’s (at North Parade in Kingston) along with Errol Thompson . The mastering engineer is responsible for the final sound of the recording, after all individual instruments and vocals have been laid . Thompson also became Touring Engineer with Bob Marley And The Wailers . These skills, as well as the rapport he developed with Artistes, served Thompson well . He migrated to the United States in 1974 . Bob Marley and the Wailers were going on tour to promote Rastaman

Vibration (the 1976 release, in a year when Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer both put out solo albums) . They required a Jamaican Engineer and Thompson was chosen . Thompson would go on to tour with Marley consistently, right up to the Tuff Gong’s final concert at the Stanley Theatre in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 23, 1980 . In-between those multiple treks he also worked with Jimmy Cliff and Burning Spear, recording the latter’s 1977 Live album during the Man From the Hills’ Tour . Thompson also worked with Steel Pulse and Dennis Brown, Reggae’s Crown Prince which lasted just before his death in 1999 .Thompson continued globetrotting through the 1980s and 1990s, handling sound for Sunsplash tours and dabbling a bit in dancehall with persons like Supercat on the early 1990s Cool Runnings tour, and also encountering Maxi Priest, Sizzla, Capleton and others .

Thompson has handled live sound Artists, whose music may well be among the classics Alicia Keys . He has worked with jazz man, Marcus Miller in the 1990s . At the turn of the millennium he has worked the Hip-Hop Sound for P Diddy, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott, Queen Latifah and 50 Cent . Some of the Venues that he has worked are Montreaux Jazz, Nice Jazz Festival, Reggae Su Splash, Reggae Japan Splash, Aspen Jazz, JVC Jazz, Korea Jazz Fest and Newport Jazz Festival .

Now, although he officially lives in New York, Thompson can be here and next time in London or Australia . Dreams of turning knobs, positioning microphones to capture sound, sliding faders and declaring a recording ready for the road would come true . But it took a while before Thompson in the control room at the 1988 Grammys with Quincy Jones giving the nod to how he was handling Michael Jackson’s audio .

MAY 1, 1947 was a great day for all Jamaicans . In the Anglican Cathedral at Spanish Town, Percival William Gibson

was consecrated as Suffragan Bishop of Kingston; the first time the honor had been conferred on someone of African ancestry in almost one hundred years . For Gibson it was merely another milestone in an illustrious career, which saw him proving beyond any doubt, the capacity of Jamaicans to achieve greatness . Most importantly, he demonstrated the practicability of living a clean, honest life, without any hint of scandal, while rising to the top ranks of civil and ecclesiastical life .

Academic History Born September 15, 1893 to William and Louise Gibson at the Cavaliers Water Works in Kingston, he attended Mico Practising School and in 1907, won a scholarship to St . George’s College . His parents could not have afforded the fees . Young Gibson never received less than 90 per cent in any subject during the four years before graduating and became one of the first black students admitted to St . Peter’s Anglican Theological College, again on a scholarship . Through private study, he became the first Jamaican to gain the Bachelor of Divinity degree, later also gaining the B .A . and B .A .

(Honors) degrees, all through external study . These were landmarks, which inspired future generations of scholars at a time when the handful of black students who could qualify, studied either medicine or dentistry or law . And all had to travel overseas .

Kingston College As a young curate, he developed a reputation as a hell fire preacher, at St . George’s Church on East Street, where he started outreach programs among the youth . Percival Gibson then developed the goal of working for the City of God through the training of young men of character, who would lift up the morals and lifestyle of the City of Kingston . His inspiration was the book “The City of God” by St . Augustine, an African Father of the mediaeval Christian Church . In 1925 his sister Gwendolyn and himself purchased the Rectory of All Saints Church on East Street, and on April 16, 1949, he enrolled the first 49 boys at the building which he renamed Kingston College . At the time, there were 20 high schools in Jamaica, with a total enrolment of about 1,000 . By his death in 1970, Kingston College alone would have over 1,500 students enrolled .

From the beginning, Gibson made it known that the school was not ‘exclusive’, but would accept any boy whose parents could pay . Most of the other schools prided themselves on only taking ‘the right kind’ of students, which was a justification for the class and race prejudice of the day . Nevertheless, his reputation as the country’s greatest classical scholar ensured a steady stream of students of all strata of society .

The first two decades of K .C were a struggle; buoyed only by the motto ‘the brave may fall, but never yield’ .

A Fiery Servant

If ever there was an individual that was born to sing, then

that person is Dalton Harris .

The 2010 Rising Star winner is bursting at the seams with talent and has been quietly making strides in the entertainment business with his professional attitude towards his chosen field .

Life has not always been a bed of roses for the young Sanguinetti, Clarendon native .

Before winning the popular Rising Stars contest Harris was forced to live alone in less than desirable conditions, but with a steely resolve, clawed his way out of poverty and is now positioned to burst out big time as a singer whose talent cannot be hidden under a bushel .

“It was never easy for me . But now, where I’m at, I would never want it to be easier . Adversity nurtures strength of character,” Harris said .

A firm believer in the value of a sound education, Harris recently completed sixth form at Kingston College (2014) after graduating from the prestigious high school’s fifth form with distinctive passes in his exams at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) subjects .

His entry into Kingston College was made possible after he met up with head of Penthouse Records Donovan Germain who now handles his business in the entertainment industry .

Although blessed with a smooth voice and a bright future in music sits on the horizon, his sights are firmly set on higher education .

“I plan to study law and psychology at the university level . Education is the key to economic independence . This music thing is unsure and I have to make sure that I approach life with good

judgement and not place all my eggs in one basket,” Harris said .”

But his vocal talent began shining through from a tender age .

While he was in the sixth grade at the Sanguinetti Primary School, Harris was entered in the Jamaica Cultural Development Committee’s gospel song competition and did himself justice .

“I also sang at church rallies and began earning from music very early . My sisters used to beat me to sing for their amusement when I was younger,” he said .

Now years later, he is making his mark with the singles Finally, You Will Know, new single Work Hard and the vastly popular Pauper, which he says mirrors his own experience .

“That song is an autobiography of my life,” he said .

Harris is one who is light years ahead of many of his contemporaries who sometimes tend to gravitate towards trite lyrics and forget the real beginnings of Jamaican popular music which has inspired many oppressed people around the globe and has the message of love, hope and protest as its base .

“Superficial lyrics is not it . I want to write things that people can sit and listen to . I want my music to be relatable and authentic I think artistes now-a-days have stopped paying attention to the music and started seeking attention which does not make for any substantial example setting” but Harris is not content with sitting on his laurels and is aiming to push himself to the limit .

“Sitting down and being proud of what I have already achieved is not my style . I drive myself to the limit and once there is room for improvement I will be working to achieve more . My life has not been easy so fighting to reach the top has become second nature,” he said .

Harris hopes to “one day compile an album that will be ranked among some of the greats in terms of content and musical value”, he says .

Dalton Harris was born to sing.

The Rt. Rev. Egbert Don Taylor

Bishop Egbert Don Taylor, more affectionately known as Bishop Don T ., or just Don T . by his contemporaries, was born in Jamaica on

2nd . September 1937, in humble surroundings . He spent his formative years at Kingston College where he came under the influence of the school’s founder and first headmaster, the late Bishop Percival William Gibson .

He was ordained a priest in 1961, and celebrated his Jubilee in the priesthood 3-years ago in 2011, along with his good friend Rt . Rev . Alfred Reid, former Anglican Lord Bishop of Jamaica .

He returned to Kingston College to serve briefly as headmaster, succeeding the legendary Douglas “Dougs” Forrest in 1971 . He left K .C . in 1973 and journeyed to the United States, where he spent 5-years serving the communities of Buffalo in Upstate New York, and 9-years at Holy Cross Anglican Church in Atlanta, before moving on to become Bishop of the Virgin Islands in 1987 . He went back to the United States in 1994 to take up the significant position of Vicar Bishop for New York City, that encompassed 81churches, including the famed Cathedral of St . John The Divine, where he would be based for the next 15-years .

Throughout his journey, he was not only a “Man of the Cloth”, but also a “Man for all Seasons” . He could walk with kings and queens, and dance with beggars in the streets, without missing a beat . He had an affinity for helping others; it came naturally to him, and he had a particular interest in the poor amongst us .

No matter where in the world he might have traveled, one could be certain that Kingston College would be introduced in any conversation involving Don T ., including amongst bishops of the Anglican Diocese and ordinary folk alike . The name of Bishop Gibson was central to his discussions, as he never forgot his years at K .C . under this venerable clergyman, and the indelible influence he had on his life . He rarely missed a KCOBA function in New York, even with the knowledge that he had numerous Church schedules to fill the next day on Sunday .

The year 2009 was pivotal in two major respects for Don T . First, it signaled his intention to retire from his position as Vicar Bishop for New York City, and second, it meant leaving the U .S . to return to Jamaica to shepherd the congregation of the Church of St . Thomas, more popularly known as Kingston Parish Church (KPC) .

Don T . was equal to the challenges that he faced as Rector of KPC, and in his usual style, he met them head on . In the latter part of 2013 his physical health started to fail, including suffering a significant stroke, and he took the decision to seek treatment in the U .S .; no doubt an unplanned twist in his journey .

He made the final journey to be with his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on 24th May 2014 . Don T . emulated his mentor in every aspect of life, including, uncannily, a 77-year earthly life span (Bishop Gibson passed away in 1970 at the same age of 77) .

May his soul continue to occupy the good Lord’s garden of eternal rest .

and Technology Capital Campaign, I would like to urge all of you if you have not already done so to contribute to this noble endeavor . Many of you may be aware that the stated goal of this effort is the completion of the Douglas Forrest Building; when, not if, this is accomplished Kingston College will have much needed additional classroom space, modern state of the art library and technology facilities . We are well on the way to achieving our objectives but still need US$100,000 .00 . Please encourage your batchmates and friends to become donors . I am confident that together we can make this campaign a resounding success .

In this our 90th year, our beloved alma mater is on the verge of establishing high water marks which Bishop Percival Gibson and Mr . Douglas Forrest would be most proud of . Old boys, friends and supporters now have an opportunity to support this high impact project to elevate the teaching and learning environment that is Kingston College for the foreseeable future .

Fortis & thanks for the love and continued support .

but in the recording facility he has built and operated in Kingston . Starting in 1987 with the launch of his famous Music Works Studio at 56 Slipe Road, close to the inner-city areas of Kingston, he developed a peerless reputation as the leader of a team that produced magical chart-topping sounds . What was perhaps not fully appreciated was Gussie’s uncanny judgment of character and human resource potential and his superb natural gifts as a motivator and mentor .

Gussie Clarke is currently the CEO of the Anchor Group of Companies an umbrella company comprising Anchor Recording Company, Dubplate Music Publishers and Anchor Media . Aside from his work in producing great music, Mr . Clarke is also involved in the management side of the music and is a founding member of the Jamaica Music Society (JAMMS); Jamaica Association of Composers Authors & Publishers (JCAP) and The Jamaica Anti-Piracy Alliance (JAPA) . In recognition of his contribution to the development of Jamaican music, he was awarded a Bronze Musgrave Medal for “Distinguished eminence in the field of Arts” in 2014 .

Kingston College School Song By Vivian Virtue Who would be truly brave must be Men not afraid to fight and fall Hearts that unshrinking venture forth Obedient to the restless call Of God and country and of truth In burning faith and abounding work God gives us such courageous youth As never shall that challenge shirk. Not for the swift alone the race Nor for the strong the battle’s cry Not every hero bears the palm Where ringing plaudits fill the sky God makes us such as in the fight Though thrown upon the adverse field Rise up in God’s courageous might The brave that will not ever yield. Sung to the tune of “Jerusalem”.

Fortis Prayer By Brian Morrison Father we come to you Solemnly praying for guidance. Lead us dear Lord and Savior To a higher level of understanding And discipline. Perpetually open Our hearts to your teachings. Give us faith to believe in what We can accomplish and wisdom When pondering each difficult task. Bless our deliberations and Inspire hope, knowing our Work shall not be in vain. Bless each of us present As well as those absent. Remove all tension within And amongst us dear Lord So that charity – God’s greatest gift Will abound in our hearts, And in our souls, Forever Fortis Amen

National Anthem Eternal Father bless our land, Guard us with Thy Mighty Hand, Keep us free from evil powers, Be our light through countless hours. To our Leaders, Great Defender, Grant true wisdom from above. Justice, Truth be ours forever, Jamaica, Land we love. Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica land we love. Teach us true respect for all, Stir response to duty’s call, strengthen us the weak to cherish, Give us vision lest we perish. Knowledge send us Heavenly Father, Grant true wisdom from above. Justice, Truth be ours forever, Jamaica, land we love. Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica land we love. Listen to the national Anthem

National Pledge Before God and all mankind, I pledge the love and loyalty of my heart, the wisdom and courage of my mind, the strength and vigour of my body in the service of my fellow citizens; I promise to stand up for Justice, Brotherhood and Peace, to work diligently and creatively, to think generously and honestly, so that Jamaica may, under God, increase in beauty, fellowship and prosperity, and play her part in advancing the welfare of the whole human race.

National Song I Pledge My Heart I pledge my heart forever To serve with humble pride This shining homeland, ever So long as earth abide. I pledge my heart, this island As God and faith shall live My work, my strength, my love and My loyalty to give. O green isle of the Indies, Jamaica, strong and free, Our vows and loyal promises O heartland, ‘tis to Thee.

Notes To The Financial Statements

2014 December 31

12. FINANCIAL RISK MANAGEMENT

Liquidity RiskLiquidity risk is the risk that the Trust will encounter difficulty in raising funds to meet its commitments . The Trust manages its liquidity risk by optimising cash returns on investments, maintaining an appropriate level of cash and bank deposits, maintaining a portfolio of highly marketable and diverse assets that can be easily liquidated as protection against any unforeseen interruption of cash flow .

Cash Flow RiskCash flow risk is the risk that future cash flows associated with a monetary financial instrument will fluctuate in amount . The Trust manages this risk by monitoring interest earning assets and procuring the most advantageous rates . The Trust also ensures, as far as possible, that maturing financial assets are matched to financial commitments .

13. FAIR VALUE OF FINANCIAL INSTRUMENTSFair value is the amount for which an asset could be exchanged, or a liability settled, between knowledgeable willing parties in an arm’s length transaction . Market price is used to determine fair value where an active market exists . Where no market price is available, the fair values presented have been estimated using present value or other estimation and valuation techniques based on market conditions existing at reporting date . However, considerable judgment is necessarily required in interpreting market data to develop estimates of fair value . Accordingly the estimates presented are not necessarily indicative of the amounts that the Trust would realise in a current market exchange .

14. APPROVAL OF FINANCIAL STATEMENTSThese financial statements were approved by the board of directors on 2015 April 29 and authorised for issue on 2015 April 29 .

Acknowledgements

5th. May 2014 – 31st. April 2015

In God We Trust First we must acknowledge God’s merciful kindness for sparing our lives and allowing us to be part of this 31st reunion of KCOBA USA Inc . We are aware that He has preserved us through no goodness of our own but because of His loving kindness and tender mercies . For what we have been able to accomplish we give Him thanks .

Individuals There were many individuals who provided financial, physical, moral and material support to KCOBA during this fiscal year . The list of individuals is very extensive making this medium most impractical . However, KCOBA USA Inc ., the students faculty and staff are most grateful for your assistance . Without your support the many successes that we enjoy would not be possible . We also wish, through this medium, to express our deepest gratitude to all K .C . Old Boys and their families; supporters; friends; and, well wishers of KCOBA, for facilitating our efforts to help Kingston College and keeping alive the dream of our founding Headmaster, the late Bishop Percival William Gibson .

We are mindful of the energy and enthusiasm our new board members have brought to the association and look forward to the immediate future when they will take their rightful place at the helm of KCOBA USA Inc .

Businesses KCOBA again received significant support from the business community this year and we are indeed very appreciative . In turn, the Board strongly encourages all members of KCOBA and their families and friends, to

patronize them frequently . We know these are challenging economic times and we appreciate their loyalty .

Joint Effort by the AssociationsWe are proud of the partnership that has been forged with all Chapters, including those based in North America and Jamaica . We have maintained open and honest dialog all year . We have worked jointly on numerous projects . We have kept each other informed on all our proposed activities and we have not been shy to seek help from each other when the need has arisen . We expect that this coordinated effect will continue and the bonds that we have forged will transcend our generation . We hope to build on the strong relationship that currently exists between our associations . I am proud to recognize that two of the three issues that remained outstanding, the new School bus and permanent Principal were achieved . Still remaining outstanding is the completion of the Douglas Forrest Building – a key component of the KC Library & Technology Capital Campaign . With your continued support we are hopeful of accomplishing that objective before the end of 2014 .

Spouses & Families Being a KCOBA board member has many attendant responsibilities and without the support of spouses, companions and children it would be difficult to fulfill our obligations . We thank you for your love, patience and understanding .

Blessings & FortisKCOBA Board of Directors

Rainford Perry Broomfield, President
