FROM THE PRESIDENT

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Words to the wise and the tinkerers amongst us. I always end up with

extra screws left over; but that’s a segway into too much packaging. I want to ponder if fixing things

that ain’t broke include includes using obsolete technology? I’m musing about the advancement of

technology and how over the eons of time, mankind has been reticent to change. We tend to get into a

comfort zone and want to stay there. I confess, I still have a Pentium PC with PCI slots, (and a 386

with 740 kilobytes of RAM). A boat anchor by some standards, but I have a scanner and a shortwave

card installed that still works – although it seems like there’s less to scan everyday and some

shortwave stations are streaming on the internet now. Even Radio Caroline, that pirate station from

the 1960’s), streams on the internet now.

Do people still use RTTY and/or packet or any other mode that seems to be waning or virtually

extinct? Inquiring minds want to know how it works, but if there is no one to communicate with,

what’s the point? Why buy a TNC when I can buy a dongle. Of course, that’s another discussion about

what happens when the internet goes down.

It seems like more people are heading to digital modes and short pre-set QSO’s. Will rag chewing

become obsolete? Maybe it’s the art of conversation that’s waning? Why speak to one another if we

can text; however, depending on the topic, sometimes I agree texting is short, sweet and to the point.

Although in some cases, there is a lot lost in translation that could have been avoided with a 2-minute

conversation.

You must admit, it is amusing when you hear someone using their radio on the repeater call someone,

only to request a phone call. Personally, I think I’d call your cell phone first; I’ll leave a voice mail and

you can call me back when you’re not driving or answer me if you have Bluetooth capability. I’m sure I

only wanted to do a sound check anyways……….

73,

Brian, va3bah
