OUTSTANDING GRADE PAYMENT - Earlier this term some parents were sent an invoice reminding them to pay for
their student’s grade items. The original note was sent home at the beginning of the year. This note also included
information about P&C Membership and the P&C Voluntary Contribution. Could you please arrange payment of these
items as soon as possible. Due to the number of parents who have not paid this invoice we may not be able to offer Reading
Eggs and Mathletics in 2018 as we have to use other School funds to pay for these programs. Your support in this area is
appreciated.
WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY – FRIDAY 19TH MAY - The school will be participating in Walk Safely to
School Day again this year. This will occur on Friday 19th May. Kindergarten students who participate in this activity will
receive a special sticker about Walk Safely to School Day.
The objectives of the day are:
To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children
To promote the health benefits of walking and create regular walking habits
To help children develop vital road crossing skills and ensure children up to the age of 10 years hold an adult’s hand
when crossing the road
To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians
To reduce car dependency and traffic congestion
To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles
To promote the use of public transport
I am aware that most of our students are driven to school by their parents. However it would be wonderful on this day for
parents to park a distance from the school and walk the rest of the way. We would like to see many students and parents
involved in this worthwhile activity.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT OFFICER NEWS
Next term will be the start of our ‘Transition to School Groups’
These groups will start in Term 3 on a Tuesday at 9am and 11.30am (there will be 2 sessions each day) for the children who
will be starting school in 2018.
Hopefully your child will be able to attend these groups to familiarise them with school routines and get to know other
children who will be attending school with your child.
Please make sure you have filled in and returned your enrolment form for your child who is starting school as the transition
to school groups will be formulated from this enrolment form. Forms can be collected from the school office.
Our KLPS playgroup has been another initiative that has started this year and has been very popular with our community.
Playgroup takes place each Tuesday in the hall at 9am. Please come along and enjoy the fun. The children have lots of
activities in each playgroup session, along with craft, a story, some singing and getting to know new friends who they might
go to school with.
I have recently presented, on the P&C Facebook page, a talk on ‘Helping your child read at home’. I will also endeavour to
put a talk on ‘School Readiness’ on the P&C Facebook page.
Please be aware that I am available to chat to you each Tuesday about any concerns or queries you may have. My contact
information is phone 9674 4460 or email [email protected]
HELP FOR PARENTS TO KEEP THEIR CHILDREN SAFE ONLINE FROM THE OFFICE OF THE
CHILDREN’S eSAFETY COMMISSIONER
The Commonwealth Government’s Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner has developed a resource for parents -
iPARENT— which is designed to help parents learn how to be safe and secure with the connected devices in their children’s
lives.
iPARENT - found at https://www.esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent - provides facts and stats about Australian
children online, managing technology in the home and strategies used by parents to keep children safe online.
A parent’s guide to online safety can be downloaded from the site and a range of useful information is available. For
example parents can access information about cyber bullying including:
How to talk to your child
A parent’s guide to responding to cyber bullying
What to do if your child is being cyber bullied or cyber bullying others
Sources of professional support and help
Information is also available for parents about unwanted contact, inappropriate, offensive or illegal content and sexting.
You may like to check out the Office of the Children’s e-Safety Commissioner’s eSafety Christmas Gift Guide if you are
contemplating buying technology for your children this year.
The Department of Education also has a cyber safety resource for parents on its website - Raising good Digital Citizens
which is accessible at: http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/en/technology/using-technology/raising-good-digital-citizens.
Check them out when you get the chance.

A Visit from an Aussie Legend!
On Wednesday 17th May the students of Kings Langley Public School were privileged to have a visit
from Australian Tennis Legend Todd Woodbridge. He has won 83 career doubles titles, 22 grand
slam titles, 2 singles titles, Olympic Gold and Silver medals and has been a part of two victorious
Davis Cup teams. His visit coincided with the ANZ Hotshots roadshow in which Tennis Australia and
ANZ are handing out 80 000 racquets to students in Kindergarten. Todd addressed the entire school
and entertained the students with stories of his tennis journey. Our captains and vice captains were
called upon to help display some of his most significant trophies and medals. Twenty Year 4
students, who will be participating in the Todd Woodbridge Cup later this year, had the opportunity
to personally meet him and have their photo taken. Ten students who have regularly participated in
our Friday Hot Shots program tested their skills with Todd. We are grateful for the support of Tennis
Australia and ANZ in establishing the Hot Shots program at our school.

BAND CAMP 2017
For the first time at Kings Langley Public School, our amazing band students had the privilege of
attending band camp for two nights and three days in week 3 this term. The children arrived at school
on Thursday, packed and very eager, if not a little nervous, about the longer stay and for some, it was their
first time away at camp from their family.
The children arrived at Vision Valley, Arcadia and listened to the rules and watched
the safety video before recess and then it was straight into routine! The children
enjoyed the rehearsals, tutorials and games and activities across the first two days. We
shared many fun memories learning together and the parents and teachers were able to
see the determination and development of all three bands in their lessons.
On the second day, each band had the opportunity to enjoy an activity run by the amazing staff at Vision
Valley. Our bigger bands were split into two and were able to get involved with archery or the low ropes
course. Our intermediates enjoyed doing the archery and luckily, apart from a minor scratch, everyone
came out unscathed!
At night time, we enjoyed our dinner together and we chilled out and finished off with a movie before
heading to our rooms. On the second night after dinner, we played a game of trivia with loads of winners
before having the chance to watch a movie, the football or enjoy quiet time in our rooms. By the end, we
were all exhausted and fell asleep very quickly.
Saturday morning was the start of our big day! We woke nice and early, packing our gear and getting
ready for our performances. We had our morning tea which was made even more special by a birthday,
it’s not every day you have over 100 people watch your performance on your birthday!
Our wonderfully supportive parents started to arrive and get ready to see the children perform and to hear
about all their adventures. Our concert started and our three bands played their absolute best. They
sounded incredible. It is so remarkable to hear just how much our junior band has developed and to see
how well the intermediate and senior bands continue to grow. Our Intermediate and Senior band then
combined together for the finale. It was such an impressive performance; very few were left without
goose bumps!
Our bands played the following pieces:
Junior Band
Settler’s March
Power Rock
35. Surprise Symphony
Plus various pieces (up to No. 42)
Intermediate Band
Cruise Control (NEW)
Dark Matter (combined piece with Senior Band)
Pirates of the Caribbean (BRAND NEW)
Bunyip Blues
The Spook
Senior Band
Jupiter Skeleton Dance
Kidz’ Klassix
Disney’s Magical Marches
Combined band
Dark Matter
A big thank you goes to Mr Clark for all of his hard work and efforts. He does a phenomenal job teaching
our bands and organising such wonderful experiences for the children. In addition, I would like to extend
that thank you to Mr Elvery who has put so much dedication towards supporting and developing the
strengths of the children in the band. Both conductors and all the tutors who came out to help have worked
tirelessly to create a band that has developed excellent listening skills, concentrate hard to keep up and
work so well as a team.
I would like to also thank Mrs Tietz, Mrs Williamson, Mr Prasad and Mr Manwarring who gave up their
personal time to help provide support, care and loads of laughter with our children. We are so lucky to
have such supportive parents and it was a pleasure to spend the time with you all. Thank you also to Mr
Smith who came and helped Mr Clark pack away the band gear at school after the performance.
A special thank you to Mrs O’Shea who came and supported the bands at camp, giving up time in her
classroom to help ensure that camp was yet another enjoyable experience for the children. Thank you to
Mrs Hutton who also came out on Friday to see how the bands were progressing and to support our
children as Deputy Principal and also as a supporter of the band program. Mrs Hutton stayed through the
night, assisting the students, parents and teachers and supported all children through their performances.
Finally, thank you to Mr Walker for attending the spectacular performance of our bands on the Saturday
morning. The children were beaming with pride after you spoke to them about how proud you were of
how much they had grown and how well they represent themselves and our school. Mr Walker has
continually supported our band program at KLPS over the years, allowing our children the opportunity to
pursue their enthusiasm in performing arts.
Well done to everyone involved, your continued support means everything to your children and to our
school. We look forward to our adventures at band camp next year at Vision Valley.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
“Social Thinkers”
How do we become ‘Social Thinkers”? It involves more than direct language-
based interactions, it means thinking about others and learning to regulate one’s
own behaviour.
Teaching social thinking is a developmental, behavioural approach that is utilising
cognitive behaviour strategies to teach core social thinking concepts.
The “Social Thinkers” curriculum is an engaging series designed to teach concepts
about group collaboration and providing students with an avenue which they can
learn about themselves, about others, and the dynamics of working or sharing
space together.
How do we teach the Social Thinkers Program? We teach core social concepts
through our storybooks and related structured activities to help children learn to
explore how our social minds help us interpret and respond to each other.
Our aim is to provide structured teaching of social concepts and activities which
will enable students to explore their learning about social thinking in activities and
organised ‘play time’ so students can gain self-esteem and confidence in interacting
with others.
In Term 1 and 2, we have 4 different age groups of students involved in the “Social
Thinkers” program. If you think your child needs support in developing social skills
then discuss a referral either with your class teacher or with Mrs Brown.
