At Kings, we believe that art is
fundamental to what it is to be
human. We support students as
they engage in active dialogue
with the artistic culture (or
cultures) they inhabit, extending
awareness of their responses and
those of others, and helping them
to express their own ideas in
artistic work which reflects their
experience.
We value all students ideas and
aim to create a reflective and
questioning environment in the
art studio. Students are
encouraged to share andarticulate their observations and
experiences, enabling them to
develop and express increasingly
independent and confident
personal responses. We open the
art studio as far as possible to the
wider artistic world, offering many
opportunities, on many levels, for
students to become stimulated,
curious and engaged in art.

The Kings
Advantage
1. Expert teaching and small classesOur art and design programmes benefit from expert teaching
staff, who are experienced in, and passionate about, their
field. All are specialist in teaching international students.
Small classes are a further feature of Kings programmes,
we consider them essential for creating the personalised
and supportive learning environment which leads to further
academic success in the arts.
The teachers at Kings are really nice and helpful. It is really
good to have maybe some higher level of personal
connections with teachers, which most of the big Foundation
schools dont provide. They always give you new ideas and
broaden your mind.
Ya Lu Huang (Elise), now studying Fashion Management
at the London College of Fashion
The fact that our teachers are artists, not just teachers,
I think is really great.
Yurie Abe from Japan, currently studying the Art
Foundation programme at Kings Oxford
3. Flexible study options
At Kings, we do not have a one size fits a ll approach. O ur programmes are flexible enough to a llow each student to follow
a personalised study path which best suits their intended field of further study and their level of experience. Our range of
courses means that we can cater for all even those who have never formally studied art and design.
Our current art and design programmes include the newly introduced Art and Design Preparation Programme, and the
specialist Art Foundation course. Art and design options are also available within both the A-level and Advanced Level Foundation

and Adam, the Director, to really narrow down my choices and establish what would
be best for me. There are lots of universities to choose from and it can be quite
overwhelming. Mariana Peloso do Nascimento, from Brazil, now studying Film

Yuri Abe from Japan talks about
her experience studying the
Art Foundation course at Kings
Oxford, and how it has enriched
her creative practice.
Were you studying art at school in Japan
and is it different studying ar t here?
Yes, and yes it is. In my country they always
focus on the final piece but here, although
the final piece is important, they also focus
on the experiment, the process, what we
do to get to the final piece. Because in my
country they didnt really focus on the
process, we didnt have to produce sheets
for the research we did. Here we have to
show everything so its kind of different, but I thin k I prefer the British style because
in my country my teachers didnt really
give us advice on how to develop.
I did gain some skills in Japan, but Ive
learnt more here.
Are there specific skills youve learnt in an
art sense?
For me, I think Ive learnt how to record
things and how to present it, and by doing
that, aer finishing my projects I can look
back and do evaluation. T hats really
beneficial for me in order to make better
things in the next project.
Which project have you enjoyed most?
Theres a specific project I enjoyed and it
was about transformation. I enjoyed that
a lot because Im interested in calligraphy
and typography and I did that in my
project. Its my favourite area.

Why did you choose a Kings course? The college has a very good reputation
and, in addition, Oxford seemed like a good
place to start this grown up journey. It has
a nice student community and an amazing
mixture of cultures which made it easier to
improve my English.
How does Kings help students ac hieve
their goals?
Apart from the vast amounts of attention
that students receive from the tutors there
is an amazing stream of inspiration coming
from the staff. Ive always been fascinated
by the amount of care they put into
relationships and their involvement with
students lives including their successes
and difficulties.
What makes studying at Kings
so good?
I loved the fact that groups were really
small, hence every student could get
more attention. I personally learnt how to
listen carefully and on the whole create an
interesting, balanced discussion.
What do you like about life in the UK ?
Culture and Art. Endless resources
of inspiration, history, breath-taking
architecture and ability to mix with people
of different ages and cultural backgrounds.
I enjoyed doing internships where I could
meet and communicate with professional
people and learn a lot from them!
What are your plans for the f uture?I am planning to develop my skills as
much as possible to become really good
at designing and creating. Aer my
graduation I would love to stay in the UK
to get a good taste of working in the fast-
moving fashion industry. I am in love wi
this country and want to become a part
its creative life.
How would you describe your Kings
experience to a friend?
I had a really great time with some hard
moments that let me enjoy the cool side
of student life without letting me forget
that the way to my future is actually a ve
serious business!
How did the teaching and support at
Kings help you to succeed at university
Getting into a habit of working hard, bei
more serious and responsible about my
future and doing it for myself is one of
the most crucial lessons I learnt. Tutors
at Kings made it clear from the first days
that were not there to please them but to
achieve something that were aiming for
Kristina Kurkina (pictured right) took her Foundation at Kings.
She went on to study a BA (Hons) degree in Fashion at Kingston
University. She talks about her journey to success with Kings.
Kings alumnisuccessYa Lu Huang (Elise), from
China, studied the Art
Foundation programme at
Kings. She is now studying a
BA in Fashion Management
at the London College ofFashion (UAL).
We study everything in the
fashion industry, including visual
merchandising, supply chain
management, economics, marketing
research, consumer behaviour
etc. University in the UK is really
international I am studying on a very
global basis, my course has students
from literally over 20 countries.
Outside of campus, for art students,
London has really good opportunities
to see famous art.

Mariana Peloso do Nascimento
studied art as part of the
Advanced Level Foundation at
Kings. She is now studying Film
Production at the University forthe Creative Arts.
How are you enjoying life at university?
I have fallen for my university and I am
enjoying it very much. It is different from
what I had expected but a good different
and it has been a great experience.
What does your course involve, and what
aspect are you enjoying most?
It is a very intense course in terms of the
amount of work and you are expected to
do a lot on your own outside of the classes.
Each unit consists of 200 hours including
classes, individual studies/work and
workshops. I am learning a lot and I like how
we are encouraged to try a bit of each aspect
of filmmaking so we can make a good
decision when we specialise next year.
Are there particular things which you
did on your Foundation course that have
proved useful for your current studies?
The presentation and essays that we had
to do have helped me a lot to be able to
complete my course work. Also, the art
lessons taught me a lot about the creative
process which has been very helpful.
How would you summarise your
experience at Kings Oxford?
I think it was the step I needed to get used
to how things work in the UK. It was the
ideal experience and place to help me
acclimatize with the new environment
and way of learning.

Art Foundation subject overview
Degree Course Outcomes table
Looking back on the whole
year I would like to say that
it was the busiest and the
most difficult year in my life.
Art Foundation becomes
your life and you spend all
your time in the art room.
During the Art Foundation
course I got a lot of useful
experience and understoodthe process of presenting art
projects. Looking forward
to next year I am so excited
to work with my pathway
subject in a professional way,
using equipment and special
materials.
Ksenia Umanska from
Ukraine, studied Art

In first term we tried different
pathway subjects which I
think really broadened myhorizons and helped me
to gain new skills in those
spheres. The whole year was
an amazing experience and
unforgettable journey. I have
learnt so many things and
gained so much experience.

We go with our teacher to
museums and galleries a lot,
we take our sketch books, we
draw something there, we takepictures, we come back and we
do something with those. In
my free time I also visit places
London is perfect for that
because you can go anywhere
and youll find something new.
Its the perfect city to study Art,
I think.

Ive found lots of inspiration
from being in Oxford. For
example, I love the architecture,
especially the gothic
architecture like the cemetery
on Cowley Road. I like it,
it inspires me. Theres a term
that we have in Spanish that
means kind of eye candy
I see colours and details, I love
details. I see structures and I
think I must draw it Ive been
to galleries and museums, and
weve been to a lot with the art
teachers here.
