KING’S HOUSE SCHOOL Newsletter 8 March 2019 Page 1 Dear Parents It has been lovely to follow the news of our Year 7 boys and the staff who are away this week on the annual French trip to Normandy. Fortunately the week- end’s storms had passed before they crossed the Channel and there’ve been some lovely photos from the market and the goat farm. I mentioned in last week’s newsletter that the Year 5s were running through the dress rehearsal at the time of writing. They put on the final performance of A Comedy of Errors – adapted by Miss Leah into modern script and set in London – on Thursday evening and it was a wonderful evening. The story follows the travails of two sets of identical twins so there was plenty of opportunity for comic moments – some unintentional! Well done to all the boys and staff involved. There’ve been plenty of outings taking place this week. Year 1 headed off to the Science Museum on Thursday morning and around the same time Year 6 were making their way to Box Hill for some map-reading and Geography activities. On top of that Year 4 had a great outing to the British Museum on Wednesday. Reducing Car Idling - We’ve been contacted by our local Councillors about a campaign in the borough to improve air quality by reducing car idling. I am sure we all agree this will be beneficial all round so can I ask that those picking up by car do turn off their engines when waiting either at school or the grounds. Please see the attached flyer to this email. A reminder that the Year 8 exam results will be available on the portal on Wednesday evening. Dear Parents

It has been lovely to follow the news of our Year 7 boys and the staff who are

away this week on the annual French trip to Normandy. Fortunately the week-

end’s storms had passed before they crossed the Channel and there’ve been

some lovely photos from the market and the goat farm.

I mentioned in last week’s newsletter that the Year 5s were running through the

dress rehearsal at the time of writing. They put on the final performance of

A Comedy of Errors – adapted by Miss Leah into modern script and set in London

– on Thursday evening and it was a wonderful evening. The story follows the

travails of two sets of identical twins so there was plenty of opportunity for

comic moments – some unintentional! Well done to all the boys and staff

involved.

There’ve been plenty of outings taking place this week. Year 1 headed off to the

Science Museum on Thursday morning and around the same time Year 6 were

making their way to Box Hill for some map-reading and Geography activities.

On top of that Year 4 had a great outing to the British Museum on Wednesday.

Reducing Car Idling - We’ve been contacted by our local Councillors about a

Pancake flipping!

Muddy pigs

Pancakes in the playground!

Dear Parents

This week we celebrated Shrove Tuesday with pancakes at snack time, this was a real treat and there

were lots of very excited children. We also took the opportunity to work on gross motor skills and

hand-eye coordination by practising flipping pancakes. I was very impressed by the talent in both

classes, but what made it so special was the sound of laughter that accompanied the flipping.

Mr Turner plays a very special role in the Nursery once a year, he is the perfect template for the Giant

in our Jack and the Beanstalk display! He braves a crowd of three and four year olds, equipped with

pencils ready to draw around his outline. This year we had some extra elements added as the children

decided to add Mr Turner’s lungs, liver and spleen! We obviously have some budding scientists

amongst us.

By the time you read this newsletter we will have celebrated World Book Day. It has been lovely to

have parents popping in first thing in the morning to share books with their children in Butterfly

Class. On Thursday we all dressed up and I will ensure there will be plenty of pictures to share next

week.

We are looking forward to Eco day next Friday with Butterfly Class and hoping for good weather!

Have a lovely weekend. Jane O’Brien

Dear Parents

Last week ended with a super assembly

delivered by two guest speakers from

the charity, Glass Door, which provides

food and shelter for homeless people.

The boys listened attentively and asked

some excellent questions to deepen

their understanding of how the money

we raised at Christmas will go towards

improving the lives of others. On

Monday, Mrs Doliveux spoke about the

importance of volunteering, relating

her assembly to the work of the RNLI and how they support the local community to.

On Friday, Y3 travelled to Shrewsbury House where we fielded six teams against

notoriously strong opposition. I am delighted to report that we came away with a

clean sheet and some very happy boys, whose enjoyment of the game was hugely

apparent. In school on Tuesday morning we were treated to the second of our

Breakfast Concerts in which 28 pupils performed a piece they had prepared. They

all announced their pieces and took a bow, which was great to see and it was a

pleasure to hear the progress many of them had made in just a short term. Thank

you to parents for your support at the sporting and musical fixtures in the last week

- it makes all the difference having you there. Year 2 demonstrated excellent team

work with a Bridge Building Challenge. Miss Patten came down from the senior

department to help. The boys constructed some superbly designed bridges – Well

done Year 2!

Mrs Meghann Murray

Thank you to those who performed in the Junior Department Breakfast

Concert! Mr Gower and I were very impressed with the quality of playing and

the level of confidence each boy presented on their instrument. Thank you to

the parents that were able to attend and the continuing support you give your boys as they

continue to grow in their musical education.

Rugby 7s

The U11A team had their first taste of 7s rugby on Tuesday at the

Rokeby Festival. The whole squad showed a fantastic

understanding of the different game, moving the ball superbly

and keeping the play alive. The boys played fantastically in all 6 of

their matches scoring 20 tries in the day against some tough

opposition. The final performance against The Falcons was a real

highlight; the boys put everything they had learned during the

day together for a performance which drew praise from the

opposition coach and the referee who were both hugely

impressed with how the whole team played.

The U13A team travelled to Caldicott for their 62nd annual festival. This is always one of the toughest festivals

around with the best 7s prep schools travelling from around the country to compete. Already short of a number

of injured boys, the team showed incredible heart and determination throughout the day. A tough game against

St Paul’s first up stung the team into life, a comfortable victory over Wetherby Prep was next before the boys

took on an all conquering Caldicott side. Down to just 7 players in the squad the boys put everything they had

into the game, playing smart and skilful rugby. A narrow defeat does not tell the story of how hard the boys

worked. The day finished with 2 more tough fixtures, a chip over the top from Charlie chased down by

Leon saw the team take a last minute victory over The Dragon, by this point with just 6 fit players left! The final

performance against Maidwell Hall was a display of the bravery and determination of the boys. Overall they

should be incredibly proud of the rugby they played on the day.

U13 v Wetherby Prep The U13B and C team enjoyed a couple of superb

fixtures with Wetherby Prep on Wednesday.

The boys played some brilliant rugby in 2 very close

contests. Well done to all the boys involved, a nice

break in the middle of exam week!!

Swimming Good luck to the swimming team competing at the

Borough Gala Finals on Wednesday 13th March!!

Fixture Addition The U13C team will also play Kew House on

Monday 11th March.

Therefore both U13B and C teams will be playing at

home, 2.30pm kick off against Kew House. Well done to the group of boys from years 5-8

who participated in the Danes Hill Cross Country

meeting last Thursday. The boys did themselves

proud on a challenging course against some very

strong runners from 20 different schools.

On Thursday 14 March 2019, the Senior Department is lucky enough to have Dr Ben Morgan coming in to talk to Years 6, 7 and 8 about Victorian poetry and poetry of the late empire. Dr Morgan is a former pupil of King’s House and currently teaches English at Magdalen, Oxford. We are very lucky to be able to call upon his expertise and hope that the boys have a wonderful day. There is also going to a Victorian themed hunt in the library, a fabulous Victorian banquet and an introduction to music hall and some of the mysteries of the Victorian age. I hope the boys enjoy themselves! Miss Kirk

Ski Trip 2020 Details of this trip will be emailed home to Years 5, 6 and 7 parents later today
