Kate now heads to Gladstone to represent at the next level. We wish you all the best, Kate. Well done to the Kingaroy High Show team for their great results and participation at the Murgon Show last weekend. It’s refreshing to see the 19 students learning and performing outside the classroom. Thank you to Mr Sean Wicks and Mr Steve Carige, as well as all parents, who assisted. Students at Kingaroy High are asked to follow the six virtues (respect, self-discipline, commitment responsibility, honesty and tolerance) at all times. Of late it has been disappointing to be speaking with students whose self-discipline and lack of respect are being highlighted when they use offensive language. I have spoken with the students to remind them that at no time is any type of offensive language acceptable. I would ask for parent support to work with us on this anti-social behaviour. Six committee chairs have been working diligently with their committees and liaising teachers to ensure that there are activities being organised for all students. Mikayla Layt (along with Dayna Pukallus, Junior Vice Captain) and the Welfare group has organised a free dress day for a gold coin donation this Friday, and they have chosen and collected orders for the senior jersey. Danielle Janz (with Junior Vice Captain, Briarna Reynolds) and her Media group continue to collect stories and photos for this year’s Noorook magazine and also change the school sign each week. Recently Amie Mason (with Junior Vice Captain, Jayde Kilgour) and the Environment Committee ran the Clean Up Australia Day efforts at lunch time, while Hayley Hunter (with Junior Captain, Brayden Canniford) has been busy organising lunch time sports activities such as the peg board challenge and has also tried to organise the viewing of a top level football game. In the world of culture, Kate McCormack (with Junior Vice Captain, Riley Slatter) is organising for a band to play for students at lunch time, and there are a couple of other music groups meeting before school. Melita Ross (& Junior Captain, Jenna Christiansen) with the Social Committee organised an excellent social for students and are preparing for the Term 2 social. STAFFING This week we welcome new School Development Officer, Mrs Ros Dalton. Mrs Dalton will work with staff to locate and hopefully access funding that can provide resources or opportunities for our students. She will work two days a week. Welcome, Ros. Our Assistant to the Principal, Mr Scott Dempster has taken a position as acting Principal at Dirranbandi State School. In his absence, Mr Jamie Shirlaw has taken on this important role. We wish Mrs Merelyn Roberts all the best for some leave she is taking either side of the Easter vacation. Also, our best wishes are extended to Ms Nadine Gray who is taking maternity leave from March 31. We wish you well as you enter this exciting time. Ms Judy Grimes will also be on a short period of leave so we wish her all the best for the well earned break. SCHOOL EVENTS Thank you to the parents who came along to Parent-Teacher Interviews last Monday. There were some helpful discussions between parents & staff about how best to support students. If you were unable to attend the interviews, please contact your student/s teachers at any time. Should you have concerns at any time, please make early contact so that any potential problems can be dealt with immediately. Our Gifted & Talented Co-ordinator, Ms Nerissa Maudsley is currently holding the school’s rounds of the Spelling Bee competition. Students in Years 8 & 9 have either nominated themselves or been nominated by class teachers to have a go at this important part of our language. Good luck to all competitors and we look forward to seeing who will represent our school at the District level. Year 12 students are about to start specific preparation for the QCS test under the guidance of Mrs Jenny Tessmann. A couple of weeks ago I talked to the whole Year 12 group about Special Consideration requests. This is a reminder that if you believe your student may need special conditions, you can look up more information on the Queensland Studies Authority site, or they can come to see me. However, this needs to be done shortly. I remind all students sitting the QCS test that working hard in the practice sessions plays an important role in how well you do. It is also vital to communicate with Mrs Tessmann if there are any questions or issues throughout the preparation time. JUNIOR SECONDARY At present we are preparing for the Year 7 students joining Kingaroy High in a number of ways. Some of the Kingaroy High staff who will be teaching Junior Secondary classes in 2015 are spending time in local Year 6 & 7 classrooms to see how Upper Primary school classrooms operate and also to meet some of the students who will be coming to Kingaroy High in 2015. Next term we will host some primary school teachers in our Year 8 & 9 classrooms to further the sharing of good pedagogy. In terms of the building itself, the first floor concrete was poured last week and work is progressing on the columns to go to the next level, as well as the ramp towards L Block.

2014 NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST

BULLYING AND VIOLENCE

Our school is taking a stand against bullying and violence Our school has registered to be part of the 2014 National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence, being held nationwide on Friday 21 March. The National Day of Action is Australia’s key anti-bullying event for schools. It’s a day where school

communities across Australia ‘take a stand together’ against bullying and violence. Kingaroy State High School is dedicated to creating supportive school environments, free from bullying, harassment and violence. By working together we are sending a clear message to young people that bullying and violence, in or outside of school, are not okay at any time.

YEAR 10 NEWS

The Year 10s are off to a flying start to the year, involved in events such as the Form Captain Investiture, Bjelke-Petersen Shield, the summer and winter South Burnett sports trials and school social. Recently 20 students were given the prestigious award for Student of the Month.

Congratulations to students who have been actively involved in the school community. There are so many activities at Kingaroy High to be involved in, so please encourage

your child to be a part of a sporting team, debating team, choir etc. We have been encouraging correct uniform since the beginning of the year and it’s great to see the majority of students wearing the appropriate uniform. Thank you to all parents for their continual support in this issue. Form teachers have been asked to call home when a student is late to school. If your child is late to school please either ring the school or provide a note. This must be done every time to ensure we know the whereabouts of your child throughout school hours.

YEAR 11 NEWS

Another two weeks have come and gone and now we’re at the pointy end of the term. Students will be busy finishing off assessment drafts, handing in assessment, studying for an exam or working hard on finishing the term productively. Last week I had the opportunity to take a Year 11 form class and was very impressed to see that the students were using their homework diaries correctly. Every Thursday the form teachers do a uniform and diary check and it was great to see that all homework and assessment had been written into their diaries. It was again great to see so many parents attend the parent-teacher interviews on Monday night; it’s always great to talk face to face and discuss any issue that your student might be facing. Also it’s great to get emails and phone calls to discuss issues or ask questions that are necessary for your student and I encourage you to please contact me if you need to.

Going back a few weeks you would have remembered we elected Form Captains. This lovely bunch of students have been taking on leadership responsibilities since then and are doing a great job. They are: 11A Ryan Nicholson, 11B Amy Lucas, 11C Tanisha Sorrensen,

11D Chris Hutton, 11E Dom Ceremonia, 11F James Hunt, 11G Daniel Favier, 11H Mikaela Dean and 11I Jack Hourn. In week 9 I will be choosing the Year 11 Student of the Month. I will be asking teachers who their hard workers are for our year level and who is consistently doing the right thing. Students will be rewarded with a certificate presentation on parade and an ample amount of VIVO points. I’m really looking forward to seeing who our high achievers are. On a final note I have some information for students who are interested in gaining an apprenticeship in the armed forces. There will be an information evening coming up in Toowoomba on the 25th March. Please encourage your students to see me for the information, so they can venture across and see what is available to them.

YEAR 8 NEWS

Archookoora Camps have now finished for the Year 8s. From all accounts students and teachers had a fantastic time getting to know each other whilst on camp. Some comments from students were:

‘I liked having the moss wars when we were swimming’ – Jayden ‘I found the broken leg challenge very challenging but also a lot of fun!!!’ - Claire ‘When I was at camp I got very tired and felt a bit home sick but when I got home I really wanted to go back because it was so much fun.’ – Beth ‘I thought the bushwalk was great because of the scenery’ – Beth

Thanks must go to all of the Year 8 form teachers who ran the camps with enthusiasm and commitment for the 4 days and 3 nights. A great deal of organisation goes into the camps so that students can get the full benefit from the program. Thanks must also go to the many teachers, other staff and Year 12 leaders who visited the camps and lead activities with the students. Your involvement was really appreciated by the Year 8s.

This Friday the 21st is Free Dress Day. As this is the first of these for Year 8 students it is important that they are aware of the requirements of the day. Closed in shoes must be worn and it is not appropriate to wear shirts/tops without sleeves. Shorts/skirts length should also be respectable and suitable for school activities. A gold coin donation is required to participate in the day which will be donated to a worthwhile cause as decided by our Student Council. Thank you parents for ensuring your student is dressed appropriately.

Vivo Rewards are continuing well, with 9D (Mr Reiger’s class) leading the way on 1677 points, Ms Charlton’s 9I coming second on 1438 points, and Mrs Burton’s 9C on 1179 points in third place. Congratulations to all those students whose teachers are able to give points for doing positive classroom work, and having positive behaviour.

Tuesday’s Form and Life Skills lesson was in tune with the national ‘Bullying No Way’ day, being observed this Friday. Students got to learn and discuss what bullying is, how it affects people, and how they can have a

positive impact on a bullying situation. There are many exams and assignments due at this time of the year, so all Year 9s should be spending each school night revising their work for class and exams, and completing work for assignments.

GEOGROUP “We knew next to nothing about many key groups such as mammals and birds that lived in Australia during that period. That was until the fossils of Murgon in southeast Queensland gave us a picture of life in Australia 54.5 million years ago.” (extract taken from Digging up deep time : Fossils, dinosaurs and megabeasts from Australia’s distant past, P Willis and A Thomas, 2005). The regions of the South Burnett are particularly interesting geologically with all three rock groups represented (sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic). Members of the Geogroup have collected specimens from each group in the last twelve months and are currently planning an excursion to the Ballogie area. Students with an interest in all things geological are welcome to join the group and suggestions for places in which to fossick are most welcome.

LIBRARY NEWS

Overdue lists are now being delivered regularly to form classes. I know sometimes books get lost at home, so if you find any strays, please send them back to the library! It’s such a busy time, both at home and in the community, but I hope you are all getting time to do some reading. The Year 9 English classes are currently doing a unit on Speculative Fiction and this has given me an excuse to explore our library, at the same time promoting reading to my class. We had a very productive lesson looking at blurbs, and hopefully some new readers have been ‘hatched’ as a result! I know the other Year 9 classes are enjoying their exploration of science fiction, fantasy, alternate histories, superheroes and mythology! If you haven’t found the genre you like, keep trying. Eventually you will find an author or a style that suits you, but don’t give up!

DUKE OF EDINBURGH UPDATE

Recently, the school has received information about Adventurous Journey opportunities with a group called Wild Mob. Over the Easter break they are offering a five-day journey to Lamington National Parks. This has been advertised on parade but if you would like more information, please contact me. Their program sounds very interesting and a great opportunity for our students to undertake a meaningful journey. Students have also been reminded to keep good records in their diaries for their skill, service and physical activity, as well as any planning and preparation they do for AJs. The computers in the library are available for students to update their online records. Regarding the online records program, I am currently trying to get my head around the new system. There are a few students who need to have their Award activated and I hope to get this done soon. Similarly, there are several new Bridge candidates eagerly awaiting their books. As soon as these arrive, I will arrange a meeting to explain the process of completing records and having supervisors sign off on activities. If you have any questions, please contact me at school. Success continued on Saturday, with the show team collecting Junior Champion Female in the British Breeds, Reserve Champion Led Steer, two first-place ribbons, four second-place ribbons, and one third-place ribbon. Mr Carige, our dedicated Ag hand, was heard saying, “This is the best and most successful school show team I have ever been a part of!” The students were tremendous ambassadors for our school, accepting their small

reward of a jarring good time on the dodgem cars. It was an exhausted but satisfied team that made the homeward journey. A big thanks to the parents who were present and ever-helpful.

Participants were Bryanna Ryan, Chelsea Kerr, Sophia Taylor, Casey Sadler, Nathan Fairbairn, Reece Thompson, Alyssa Hayward, Sandy Parr, Amie Hosking, Lydia Ford, Adam Klein, Aydan Bywaters, Mikayla Dunn, Kobhi Britton, Blake Rea, Cameron Hosking, Sheryl-Lee Barnes, Madelyn Stewart, and Brooke-Marie Tearle.

ROUND ONE IMMUNISATION – DONE!

All Year 8 students & Year 10 boys received their first round of Immunisations today. Common side effects to be aware of are redness and soreness at the site of injection, and mild fever. You may consider using pain relief to help ease any fever or soreness. More serious reactions to immunisation are very rare, but if they do occur, a doctor should be consulted immediately. For any students that were unable to attend this round of school immunisations there will be a catch-up clinic at the Council Chambers, Glendon St Kingaroy on Thursday 3rd April at 3:30pm.
