FIVE-SPICE PEANUT & PUMPKIN MUFFINS

(NC) Pumpkins, nuts and spice – it’s a taste of fall. Adding peanut butter to muffin batter packs extra protein and helps keeps the muffins moist. This recipe can also make a delicious loaf; simply bake at 350°F (180°C) for an hour, or until a tester inserted in the centre comes out clean.

Prep time: 15 minutesBaking time: 22 minutesMakes 12 muffins

INGREDIENTS

Topping:• 2 tbsp (30 ml) large flake oats• 2 tbsp (30 ml) each pumpkin seeds and

coarsely chopped peanuts• 2 tbsp (30 ml) brown sugar

Muffins:• 1 cup (250 ml) all-purpose flour• 3/4 cup (175 ml) whole wheat flour• 1 1/4 cups (300 ml) granulated sugar• 1 tbsp (15 ml) baking powder• 1 1/2 tsp (7 ml) Chinese five-spice powder• 1/2 tsp (2 ml) salt• 1 cup (250 ml) unsweetened canned pumpkin• 1/2 cup (125 ml) peanut oil or vegetable oil• 1/3 cup (75 mL) water• 2 eggs• 1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla• 1/3 cup (75 mL) peanut butter

DIRECTIONS1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a muffin pan. Combine oats, pumpkin seeds, peanuts and brown sugar in a small bowl, then set aside.

2. In a large bowl, stir flours with sugar, baking powder, five-spice powder and salt. In a medium bowl, whisk pumpkin with oil, water, eggs and vanilla. Then whisk in peanut butter. Pour onto flour mixture and stir just until combined. Mixture will be quite thick.3. Spoon batter into prepared muffin pan and sprinkle with topping. Bake for about 22 minutes, or until a tester inserted in the centre comes out clean. Let cool in pan for 5 minutes then transfer to a rack to cool completely.

KEEP DOLLARS CLOSE TO HOME BYSHOPPING LOCALLY (NC) Buying from local businesses injects money into the community, helps create jobs, and reduces environmental impact due to shorter shipping distances. If you haven’t yet made a habit of shopping in your neighbourhood, here are five easy ways to support local businesses:

MAKE A GOAL OF IT Commit to one day a week where you will check out a different local business or restaurant. Not sure where to start? Ask your friends if they have any favourite neighbourhood hot spots, or use an app like YP Shopwise to see if there are any deals or savings nearby on everyday items you could be taking advantage of.

CHANGE THINGS UP Grocery time? Try your neighbourhood independent grocer, a local farmers’ market, or even a food co-op. Alternatively, if you always shop for the newest fashions online, visit a local boutique instead.

THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX Shopping local doesn’t just mean buying products. You can also ‘shop’ for a haircut, a car tune up, or a spa day. If you’re looking for a thoughtful present, vouchers for local services make great gifts as well.

FOCUS ON CUSTOMIZED AND HOMEMADE The area where most independent businesses shine is customized and homemade products. Whether its jam, t-shirts, or granola, goods purchased from the person who created them are generally higher quality than a generic version.

LOOK FOR THE SHOP THE NEIGHBOURHOOD LOGO Shop the Neighbourhood program is a nationwide initiative of Yellow Pages that encourages Canadians to support small business by shopping locally on November 28, 2015. More information is available at www.yp.ca.

(NC) As the weather cools and homeowners begin to begrudgingly pack away their tools and equipment from the summer, it’s common for tools to get piled haphazardly and forgotten. The result of this approach is often a garage or shed that looks like an abandoned storage locker.

If stored this way, when it’s time to start the engines the following season homeowners may find their tools in permanent hibernation. The best tool maintenance requires a little servicing before storage, not after.

“It is not uncommon for people to forget to service their tools,” says Michelle Sordi, director of marketing at Husqvarna Canada, a leader in outdoor power products. “Spending some time preparing your tools for storage is an important step towards ensuring power tools will operate effectively the following season.”

These tips from the pros will ensure a hassle-free start next year:

FRESH AND CLEAN The moisture left by cut grass is very corrosive, so it is important to clean gardening tools and mowers, especially before storage. Look for mowers with a water hose connector, allowing for easy cleaning of the cutting deck.

DRAIN THE FUELGasoline left in fuel tanks over the winter will break down; leaving deposits and build-up that will plug the fuel system.

Before you pack power equipment away, make sure you drain any leftover fuel.

IN TUNEFor the best performance results and a longer life for your tools, give them the deluxe service treatment by taking them to a skilled dealer (like Husqvarna) for an annual tune up.

OIL IT UPUse an oiled cloth to wipe down metal areas and add a couple of drops of machine oil to moving parts.

COVER UPStore your lawn equipment indoors, if possible. If it is left outside, protect your equipment in a tool shed or cover it with a tarp.

RECHARGE THE BATTERYRemember to fully recharge the machine’s battery during the winter months.

SOAK THE TRIMMER LINEA professional trick is to remove your trimmer line and let it soak in fresh water to maintain its flexibility and ability to handle more strain

KEEP YOUR HOME SAFE Halloween(NC) Eerie sounds, spooky lights and jack-o’-lanterns aglow—extra efforts at Halloween will keep visitors coming back for both tricks and treats. However, to keep the fun going, it’s important to plan your home’s scary set-up with safety in mind.

Decorations for special events, most often involving candles (like those found in jack-o’-lanterns), account for an average of 800 home fires in North America, causing nearly $4 million in direct property damage every year.

To keep your house from being haunted with potential insurance woes, Wayne Ross, an insurance and claims expert for Aviva Canada, offers some Halloween preparation tips for preventing fires and other insurance claims:

PRACTICE FIRE SAFETYWhen setting up spooky electrical decorations and lighting, ensure that electrical outlets are not overloaded. Consider battery or solar powered lighting for your pumpkins.

MAKE SURE YOUR WALKWAYS ARE SAFEAlthough darkness may set the mood, keep walkways well lit and obstruction-free to reduce the risk of injury and to allow many goblins to walk through simultaneously.

CHECK YOUR INSURANCE COVERAGEWhile homeowner policies generally will cover you and your property on Halloween, it is a good idea to contact your insurance broker to ensure that you have the right amount of coverage—especially with hundreds of small visitors to your home.

“It is the responsibility of homeowners to make sure their property is safe for visitors,” states Ross. “By taking some precautions, you can join in the celebrations and enjoy a safe night of fun.”

(NC) With kids back to their regular routine of school and extracurricular activities, families often struggle to keep everyone healthy during the dreaded cough and cold season.

Here are a few tips to keep your kids germ-free:

Start off with getting a good night’s sleep. Take cues from physical signs of sleepiness (yawning, difficulty focusing your eyes, a lack of concentration), indicating that it’s time to go to bed.

Be active as often as possible. Make exercise a priority for both you and your family’s physiological and psychological health. For parents and children who stay active it’s common, to experience some post exercise pain or even injury. When injuries or pain occur, try relieving muscle pain by applying a topical like Arnicare Gel. The gel, which contains arnica montana and other medicinal ingredients, temporarily relieves muscle pain and reduces swelling and bruising.

Adopt healthy eating habits to feel better, naturally. As you get your children ready for school, make a fresh start with healthy foods to nourish their brains and help them grow.

The fall means the start of the cold season. Look for a homeopathic medicine such as Coryzalia to relieve cold symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose and acute rhinitis in children ages one month and up and adults alike.

Nasal and skin irritations often accompany runny noses and congestion. Cicadermine is a homeopathic, antibiotic-free solution, to soothe skin and facilitate healing of irritations, such as chapped skin, superficial wounds and redness from constant wiping and blowing.

When stubborn coughs arise, many parents think that they are out of treatment options for their younger children. But there is a solution available to relieve coughs in children under six. Stodal is a homeopathic honey-based cough syrup used to effectively relieve both dry and wet coughs in children from one to 11 years of age. Keep in mind, these homeopathic medicines may not be right for everyone, always read and follow the label.

To help parents survive the cough and cold season, the experts at Boiron have developed the “Homeopathic Medicine Finder” App, which helps users quickly and efficiently find the most appropriate homeopathic medicines to relieve symptoms from joint pain, insect bites, stress, colds and flu. You can find the recommended solution, its indication and dosage, coupons and store locations. The app is available at www.boiron.ca/app.

(NC) Kale, coconut water, brussel sprouts, fresh-pressed juices – these are just a few of the health trends keeping people fit. Trends are constantly changing of course and so are we. As the New Year approaches with resolutions in mind, the Canadian Health Food Associa-tion (CHFA) gives insights into a few of these nutritional sensations.

“Oils were all the rage this past year, whether they were being applied topically or driz-zled on our favourite salads,” explains CHFA president, Helen Long. “We saw new oils on the market such as avocado oil, which is rich in monounsaturated fats and vitamin E. Avocado oil is also excellent for cooking or sautéing due to its high smoke point. More beauty products on the market also included all-natural oils in their ingredients, such as coconut oil and argan oil.

We also saw all things fermented: from vege-tables to beverages, the fermented foods trend swept Canada. Fermented tea, other-wise known as kombucha, started appearing on grocery-store shelves and in yoga studios. Flavoured with healthy ingredients such as ginger and antioxidant-rich fruits, this effer-vescent beverage became quite the fan favourite. We also saw fermented foods from different cultures like kimchi, sauerkraut and fermented garlic. The fermentation process liberates nutri-ents in our foods, helping us absorb phyto-nutrients, some amino acids, B vitamins and minerals like zinc and magnesium.

“We were aware of fermented tea, but a trend we didn’t expect to see was tea in our face creams,” Long points out. “When polyphenol-rich tea is applied topically to the skin, these natural compounds have been shown to reduce oxida-

tive stress and inflammation caused by UV exposure. It is this oxidative stress and inflam-mation that can lead to premature wrinkles, as collagen in the skin breaks down and the elasticity of the skin degrades. Green tea was an especially popular ingredient in natural beauty products this year.”

And, she says, Canadians are still going nuts for coconuts. “We saw all kinds of coconut products, such as coconut chips, coconut ice cream, and coconut-oil-based hair and skin products. This trend doesn’t seem to be dying down any time soon, but we’ll have to wait and see what the New Year brings.”

If you want to stay up-to-date on the latest health trends visit chfa.ca.

Choosing the right plants for your landscape can truly make or break the aesthetic and your gardening experience. All too often people choose plants that look great at the nursery when they’re shopping, little do they know what the plants will do in their landscape. At the sales centre, plants are kept watered, fed and under shade cloth - in short they are babied. It is really important to know how your yard is different than the conditions at the sales centre so you know what to expect when they come home with you.

If you’re working with a landscaper and are expecting them to solve or prevent any problems, you need to know what expertise the landscaper has and not unfairly expect more from them then they are capable of. Tree farms and plant wholesalers have way too many stories about uneducated contractors and the silly things they do to plants. Just like landscapers that specialize in pools, decks or stone and interlock (hardscape features) there are landscapers who know and have specialized knowledge with trees, shrubs and perennials (softscape) and they are worth seeking out if you have a large project or just have a few questions.

For DIYers, the most Common mistakes are:

SPACINGPutting plants too close to each other, the house, a door or walkway. Retail outlets put tags on their plants that have size descriptions, follow these directions so you can space plants appropriately. The garden may look a little sparse at first, but it will fill in if you’re patient. If you need to fill in gaps while the larger plants find themselves, get a tray of annuals as fillers.

KNOW THE SUN AND WATER REQUIREMENTSAside from spacing directions, the retail plant tags have sunlight and moisture requirements. Follow the information on the plant tags to prevent most issues. After planting, you need to keep up with watering, in most cases 2-3 times per week. To keep track you should use a rain gauge placed in the garden, you want to water ⅓ to ½ an inch at a time, about an inch of water per week. The rain gauge helps track rainfalls so you can water less by the right amount. Plants that are stressed and out of their comfort zone are not happy.

Happy plants will be full, colourful and vibrant, if your plants are not these things then something is wrong. It’s important to note that many plants will struggle on under poor conditions, they will not give up without a fight, the struggle is just not particularly attractive. SOIL QUALITY AND QUANTITYThere is a misconception with homeowners that the words

“triple-mix” and “topsoil” are valuable descriptions of something. These two words mean something different at every nursery, garden centre and landscape supply yard. Thus they really mean nothing at all. If you’re planting a garden your best bet is to amend whatever topsoil you have in place with some organic material like compost (leaf and yard or mushroom are great) and then anything else needed. In most cases you have heavy clay soil, you can add some sand with the compost. The sand will help lighten the soil, increase water efficiency and make it easier for plants to grow healthy roots. When preparing a planting bed you want to have or amend 16-20 inches of soil depth and enough square feet to accommodate the plants at full size.

REDS ARE A GO FOR DESIGN IN 2016

We’ve all done it. Gone down the rabbit hole of Pinterest and countless other sites, spending hours looking at beautiful homes and yearning over them all. The

aftermath is that you’re now inspired to redesign your own space, but don’t quite know where to begin. What will the design be? What style do I choose? A good place to start is with colour. Colour is emotional and has the ability to awaken the senses. And no colour radiates passion and vitality more than red, so why not start there?

Bold red has long been making a statement in the world of fashion and beauty, but over the past few years, its various shades and tones have become very popular in the world of interior design. This is why we see more and more rich reds, often considered traditional, incorporated into contemporary

designs. Tied to everything from food to fashion to history and politics, red hues are a symbol of power, passion, energy and life. But when it comes to using them in your home, the key is to know where and how to make them work.

Red is the perfect choice for many a space, accent wall or dare we say ceiling. Try it in a dining room or bedroom for a luxurious look or even on a front door

– because nothing says welcome more than a bright red entrance. Another subtle way to incorporate red is to use it in a room with wood furniture or richly-saturated mahogany floors. It also accentuates a room with clean, modern pieces. When it comes

to choosing a complementing colour, it pairs well with soft blush tones like Para Paints’ Orb Sparkle (PF 33) or soft greys such as Princess Cut (PF 57).

Red is a classic, so embrace this colour trend and try it out in your own home with Para’s 2016 colour of the year Cherries Jubilee (P5079-85). Keep an eye out for more colour trends coming this fall.www.newscanada.com

Molson Canadian Cider and Smoke’s Poutinerie have partnered to put a seasonal twist on a Canadian classic. By adding apples, coleslaw, pulled pork and Cider to the traditional fries, curds and gravy, this poutine has a taste that is as crisp and refreshing as the cider that has gone into it.

(NC) The second busiest season for buying and selling homes is upon us, but what is it about autumn that causes an upswing in real estate activity?

According to Patricia Verge, president of the Ontario Real Estate Association, a variety of factors may be responsible for the increase in sales. “Much like spring, fall offers a great climate in which to show your home. Also, many buyers are back from summer holidays and getting back to business.”

Some of the benefits for buying a home in the fall include:

MORE CHOICES - There is a wider selection of homes available during this period so that you can visit a wide variety of open houses.

GOOD WEATHER - Mild temperatures make moving much easier. Assessing the quality of a home’s exterior is less complicated when it’s not raining or snowing.

TAX BREAKS - If you purchase a home before the New Year, you can claim deductions on your 2015 taxes.

Some of the benefits for selling a home in the fall include:

CLIMATE - Mild temperatures and beautiful fall colours create the perfect setting for showing a home.

MORE TIME - Come fall, people tend to settle back into routines, allowing a better dedication for the home selling process.

SERIOUS BUYERS - Most buyers want to be moved in and settled into their new home before the holidays and winter hit, so any interest you receive will generally lead to action.

Even with the increase in activity at this time of year, there really is no wrong time to list your home. According to Verge,

“If you price your home appropriately and make every effort to present it in a superior way, chances are you will sell your property in a timely manner regardless of the season.”

HALLOWEEN TIPSFROM

TheRainMakerTeam

TIPS FOR CHILDRENNever enter a strangers house (or even ring their doorbell) unless your parents are with you and give their permission. Some people are not as open to trick-or-treating as others, and a parent or other adult supervisor should always be within sight during trick-or-treating. Be careful when crossing the street. Make sure to look in both directions to ensure that there are no cars coming. If you have a younger sibling or other younger children with you, be sure to take their hand and help them get across the street, too. If you come across a street with a stop light, wait until the cross walk light tells you that it’s ok to cross and still check both ways. TIPS FOR TEENSIf you can drive and are taking other friends to a party, make sure you have enough gas to get there and back.

Don’t vandalize. It might seem “cool” to throw eggs at cars or houses, but someone has to clean it up and it could be you, if caught. Juveniles who conduct acts of vandalism could be arrested and punished by local law enforcement agencies. This is not something to mess around with. TIPS FOR ADULTSIf you aren’t going with your children, know the route they plan to take. Have them check in with you every hour by phone or stopping in at home. Make sure they know not to deviate from their planned route so you always know where they are.

Eat dinner beforehand. If your children are full from dinner, they won’t be as tempted to eat their candy before coming home to let you check it.

Teach your children about strangers. Be sure that your child knows that getting into stranger’s cars or talking to strangers is unacceptable, no matter what that person says to them. Explain to them that some adults have ill intentions and that in order to keep them safe, they should stay away.

Have a Safe & Happy Halloween
