• King Juan Carlos was born in Rome Italy on January 5th 1938.

• He is best known as the king of Spain since November 22nd 1975, to present.

His Education:

King Juan Carlos completed his education from 1960 to 1961 at the Complutense University in Madrid, where he studied constitutional and international law, economics, and taxation.

• King Juan Carlos competed in sailing at the 1972 summer olympics in Munich Germany.

• He is known for his physical love of sports including skiing karate and motorcycle racing.

• He also enjoys bear hunting(he was on a private hunting trip in Russia

in August of 2006 and shot a drunken bear)

Interesting Fact

• In March 1956, his younger brother Alfonso died in a gun accident at the families home in Portugal. He was cleaning his gun and a shot was fired and got shot in the forehead and died a few minutes later. People accused Juan Carlos of killing his brother.

(Juan Carlos did fire a shot but it hit the wall and ricocheted and hit his brother)

Goal As King

• When General Franco died, on Nov. 30th 1975 Juan Carlos became king due to the law of succession.

• His goal as king was to re-establish democracy and be “be king of all Spaniards without exception”

Health

• On May 8th 2010, King Juan Carlos had a tumor removed from his lung. Doctors said the procedure went well and did not need further treatment.

Interesting Facts

• Every year, King Juan Carlos gives out an award to the best writers of the Spanish language to both continents.

• His real name is….Juan Carlos Alfonso Victor Maria de Borbon y Borbon.

• He was temporarily King when Franco had a serious illness in 1974
