Running Club

The grades 2, 3, and 4 running club practiced three times a week for two months in order to prepare for the YMCA spring run on Sunday, May 31. Ten students along with Mr. Erickson, Mrs. Kirby and Ms. Watkins successfully completed the run. There were several other students who didn’t participate in the run, but ran with us every time we practiced. We are so proud of all of the runners.

June Library/HALEP News

King George School had a very successful book exchange on Thursday, May 28. Every student walked away

with at least one new book to read. Thank you to everyone who donated books to make this exchange

happen. Also, a huge thank you to our wonderful volunteer Mrs. Baker who helped ensure the day ran

smoothly.

Thanks to the outdoor education cluster and Mrs. Sandy Margetts from Brandon University for braving a

cold and rainy day to bring a pond into the school to learn about pond life. With the help of identification

sheets, books and jewelers loops, students were able to identify the critters that live in a pond. We read a

story about the life cycle of frogs, and then went to “our pond” to see some real tad poles. It was a

splashing good time in the library!

How many of you have written a letter lately? Library lessons for the month of June are going to focus on

letter writing. Thanks to Indigo, we have been able to purchase some really exciting books about letters.

All library books must be returned to the library for

Friday, June 12, 2015

Please have a look at home for any missing books. If you are unable to locate a missing book, please

contact Ms. Watkins.

The school year is ending with our clusters celebration on Friday, June 4th at 9:15

a.m. If you have a spare moment, come out and see what your child has been

learning during clusters.

Earth Rangers Presentation On Friday, May 22, 2015 King George School was fortunate to have The Earth Rangers come for the Bring Back the Wild presentation! Grade one to eight students learned about different animals and their habitats. The Earth Rangers put on an exciting and interactive presentation involving technology, a Pictionary and Trivia game, as well as real live animals! This was an unforgettable experience for students, as there was a bird swooping and flying across the gym and students got to view and learn about several interesting animals that they may not otherwise get to see up close! Students learned about endangered species and how animals are affected by hu-man behaviours. Earth Rangers is a conservation organization just for kids. If you would like more information about Earth Rangers you can visit their website at www.earthrangers.org

Consuming Monster Energy Drinks, or other Energy Drinks

A recent literature review determined that consumption of up to 400 mg caffeine daily by healthy adults is not associated with adverse effects. However, groups that are at risk, such as women of reproductive age and children, should limit their daily consumption of caffeine to a maximum of 300 mg for the former and 2.5 mg/kg body weight for the latter; thus they may need to avoid consuming energy beverages with a higher caffeine content. Adolescents should limit caffeine consumption, as intakes greater than 100 mg/day has been associated with elevated blood pressure. Based on these findings, consumption of energy drinks by pregnant or nursing women, adolescents, and children is not recommended. Excerpt from the University of California – Davis Department of Nutrition, Heath Information Sheet regarding energy drink consumption.

Roots of Empathy Our theme for May was Who Am I? Our students discussed our own uniqueness. We drew pictures of ourselves for our baby with a label attached describing an important thing about ourselves. During the family visit we watch our baby’s cues around eating (wants to eat or is full). We heard how our baby’s name was chosen and some of us shared why we have our names. Finally, we learned that despite our differences, people are the same in many ways. Next month’s theme is Goodbye and Good Wishes. We will celebrate our year of learning with a farewell party.
