Potential Energy

Stored energy, due to the interactions between objects

or particles..

Forms of Potential Energy• Gravitational Potential Energy

• Elastic Potential Energy

• Chemical Potential Energy

Gravitational Potential Energy

• The energy STORED between an object and the Earth depends on object’s weight and height.

• Dropping a bowling ball from a height of 1 meter causes a greater change than dropping a tennis ball from 1 meter.

• Similarly, dropping a bowling ball from 3 meters causes a greater change than dropping the same bowling ball from 1 meter.

Elastic Potential Energy

• Energy STORED in objects that are compressed or stretched

– Springs

– Rubber Bands

Chemical Potential Energy

• Food, gasoline, wood, and other substances are made of atoms joined together by chemical bonds.

• Chemical Potential Energy is STORED in the chemical bonds between atoms.

• Chemical potential energy is released when chemical reactions occur.

Chemistry Example:

• Wood

• Coal

• Oil

• Gas

•A yo-yo on the table, doesn’t have energy, but when picked up, it alters its position and now it has the ability (or potential) to do work.

•A bow doesn’t have the capacity to do work, unless it’s held at an elevated position.

When the position of an object is altered, it

creates Potential Energy.

Baseball Pitcher

More Examples of Potential Energy:

Stretching a rubber band.. -Stores energy

Water at the top of a waterfall.. -Stores energy

Yo–Yo in held in your hand.. -Stores energy because of position

Drawing a Bow… -Stores energy because of position

Potential Energy Converted to Kinetic

Energy…

When stored energy begins to move, the object now transfers from

potential energy into kinetic energy.

Standing still

Running

Kinetic Energy

Energy in motion All

moving objects have kinetic

energy

Page 13: Kinetic and Potential Energy. Potential Energy Stored energy, due to the interactions between objects or particles..

Examples of Kinetic Energy

• Running

• Wood Burning

• Rock Falling

Page 14: Kinetic and Potential Energy. Potential Energy Stored energy, due to the interactions between objects or particles..

More Examples of Kinetic Energy

• Shooting a rubber band.

• Water falling over the fall.

• A Yo-Yo in motion.

• Releasing the arrow from the bow.

Summary of What You’ve Learned..

Example using a coin:• Holding a coin in you hand, alters the

coins original position. • The coin has potential energy,

because it has ability to do work.• Dropping the coin in the bank,

changes the stored energy into motion.

• This transfers the coin’s energy from potential to kinetic energy.
